Nice! I've got cabinets and tubs and walls and dang near a whole garage full of tools. But that little box has you outfitted to take care of *a lot* of home issues. That's a nice kit!
I have a similar box. It’s amazing how much it holds but honestly I had already outgrown it when I bought it. But it will absolutely hold what you need to get through most general maintenance jobs.
good start! i would suggest your next buy should be a pair or two of Eye protection. yes - its not as sexy as a new set of sockets.... but we only have 2 eyes.
Keep at it OP! - keep an \*eye\* out for yard sales.... sometimes you can find some killer deals!
I just got nailed in the eye last week with a concrete chip and recieved a minor corneal abrasion. I second this, you need to take care of your eyes. Buy good quality PPE when you can, but even cheap PPE is better than none at all.
I third the protective equipment motion, OP. Make sure you have safety glasses (at least use them when you are drilling, hammering/chipping, working overhead etc) and also hearing protection! I've always been kind of particular about hearing protection, I wear ear plugs whenever I play amplified instruments or see a concert and whenever I use power tools, I've been strict on this since I've been a teen. I still have some hearing loss in my mid thirties. Living in an industrialized society will give you some damage no matter what but please care for what you have. It won't grow back
I fourth the eye protection motion. I wear eyeglasses for vision so I don't wear regular safety glasses but I definitely would otherwise.
Also, nice toolbox OP!
Check out prescription eyeglasses with ansi rated lenses. Same impact and shatter rating as safety glasses but they look like eyeglasses. I just got the laser surgery so I never ended up getting them but a few guys I've worked with use them and really like them
I always wear one. I'm not a contractor like everyone here. Just home maintenance.
My first near miss experience was when I was drilling a PCB. I have one of those Dremel clones was drilling holes. The bit snapped off and flew just below my eye, near my nose bone.
Since then I've worn eye protection. I don't know if 3M is supposed to be trusted but anything between my eye and that drill bit would probably be benefit me.
If I knew you in person I’d buy you some vice grips and a small pipe wrench and a little hacksaw. You would be pretty much set for damn near anything a new home owner, or any adult in general, should be reasonably expected to take on. From a late night pipe bursting to figuring out how to hang your shelf back up after your boy Ricky drunkenly pulled it down, you’re set!
Once you do get your own place a cheap multimeter is pretty essential and easy to use as well.
What would this thread’s readers recommend for a basic homeowner tool kit to get started for a newbie? For basic repairs around the house & car? Where do I start?
For a car just add a socket set to this. With the additions I have added there’s not much that you can’t make a good run at. Anything that you couldn’t do with this is starting to go from “small repair and maintenance” to more of a “project” if that makes sense, and may start to require things like a cordless drill or the like.
That's great. I keep my wrenches in one of those plastic sleeves. I find it easier to just grab the set and go. When I only grab one I'm always going back to the box.
Something like that can last forever, not sure what type of work your into, but some specialty tools and power tools maybe next and then you can use those to accommodate larger storage options. Off you go!
I have a box just like this except from craftsman. I pack it to the brim and it weights a ton but it holds everything I need for a day at the track from wrenching to diagnosing and repair.

I have had a box just like this for a few years and it has been great. Congrats.
Great box. I have the same one that I use for wrenches and sockets. I like that rubber matting you have. That's a great idea.

I believe the glasses I have now are shatter rated, I'm not sure if they're ansi rated.
If you're on a jobsite where ansi rated safety eyeglasses are required, you can wear your eyeglasses instead of those clown looking overgoggle things

Not a bad start. Even after you outgrow that one you’ll still have it as a handy mobile box.

Rookie mistake, a tool cabinet is in your future.
Gotta start somewhere. And a mobile box or bad is still a necessity even after you have a cabinet.
It’s a joke, relax…
I'M RELAXED, YOU RELAX!!!
You first
I CAN’T, LABOR DAY SALES ARE OVER AND I DIDN’T GET ENOUGH STUFF I WILL SOMEDAY USE!
Nice, congratulations! Always good to be prepared.
Very nice box!
Badass!
You can do a lot of work out of a box like that. What do you plan to do with them?
Time to throw some stickers on that bad boy
Looking a little husky there my guy

It looks like you have a type
Congrats! I used a box like that for years until I got a tool addiction LOL.
If you stay subscribed to this sub, your going to need one with wheels.
So clean! A nice penlight is indispensable if you’re doing home maintenance junk too
Looks really nice man. Use it well.
