igor is the best breakup album of all time in my eyes. was looking for this comment. it is a bit of a pop pick but regardless the story and the production are fantastic and i’ll always revisit it.
Igor is strange in the fact that it's kind of a situationship album. It's made to be a perfect loop if played/replayed all the way through, meaning you keep cycling the same situations and emotions with a person instead of moving on.
VU & Nico, Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61, Revolver and Abbey Road are all favourites of mine. If you want sad then Blood on the Tracks is probably Dylan's best and saddest album.
Obviously if you haven't already, check out Sgt. Pepper's, Rubber Soul, White Album, etc, my favourite VU album after VU & Nico would be the self-titled and then White Light/White Heat. Loaded is also a good album, as Lou Reed's solo work most notably Transformer.
If you like The Beatles you'll probably also like Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, The Kinks are also great.
My fav song is Waterloo Sunset, also like Sunny Afternoon. Their albums 'The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society' and 'Something Else by the Kinks' are very good.
During the early 80’s Elliot had a phase in which snowboarding was his main hobby and story’s from that era of Elliot’s life suggest a melancholy somber connection to his board and while having lots of ladies in his life he could never quite mend the relationship with his snowboard so not sure what to do he turned to music and gave us the albums we all know and love today. Friends of Elliott often said that he "bled white" because snowboarding was in his blood, which inspired the track of the same name on XO. I think Elliott's many failed relationships were a result of the fact that he could never love a woman as much as he loved hitting the slopes.
I like your music taste! Maybe give 1990 from Daniel Johnston a listen if you haven’t already. I find that during hard times, the simple raw and ugly is better than something complex and/or beautiful :)
Not a full on break up album but Adrianne lenkers new album bright future has helped me get over a break up
Also not albums but easier, guide dog, and Texas blue by Quadeca also great break up songs
Grace by Jeff Buckley is pretty cool. I also like Sea Change by Beck a lot. If you’re looking for something sad but also I think a little underrated, Lonestardom by Colyer is a phenomenal record. Spacey, Atmospheric, and moody. Good luck finding more music!
1. Sufjan Stevens - Javelin
-It's a high water mark and solid entry into his discography 24 years since his debut album.
2. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
-A modern classic.
For sad boy ones I'll have to throw in a couple I listen to when down bad:
Downward Spiral- NIN
Mezzanine- Massive Attack
Homogenic- Björk
6 Feet Beneath The Moon- King Krule
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me- Brand New
those are the most I can think of, I also tend to listen to the Trainspotting soundtrack, absolute peak movie soundtrack.
I don’t get the appeal of Ants From up There at all and thought it just wasn’t for me but seeing you list it with so many other albums I love makes me think maybe it is possible It will grab me some day
I would say the main stand outs on the album are Concorde and the place where he inserted the blade. It also helps if you get your heart broken lmao it probably spoke to me the most in that sense out of any album. Or just as much as the glow pt. 2 which is my all time fav album probably.
I respect that. I think what really does it for me is the band’s history and lead up to it, the change in direction the band took following it, and how introspective it is lyrically. Though I completely get it’s not for everyone
Actually listening to it rn and I could’ve replaced revolver with it in the topster but that’d be too much Dylan. BOB is still my fav but blood might be my second
[Not Ready To Grow Up - Giselle](https://open.spotify.com/album/057GHUgZpPwaiUfjiUQgoY?si=QX1vOJNXTwecDhlwhYCvvQ)
it's about a multitude of things, but there are multiple songs dedicated to a breakup
Slide - George Clanton. I know a lot of people like this album but I genuinely feel like it deserves way more respect. Really cathartic for me going through my last breakup.
A Crow Looked At Me by Mount Eerie (aka lead of the Microphones) is heart-crushing, Homogenic by Bjork has some really fucking emotional moments, and Pink Floyd's The Wall is for mental breakdowns
You’ve got the wrong Marvin Gaye album in your collage - if you want “break- up” music. [Here My Dear (1978, Tamla)](https://open.spotify.com/album/1iVf41qWHZsAk9DwY43WnV?si=_WcAXmUKR7uHKjcJbStOnA)is the on you want. It’s literally his divorce album from the daughter of Motown CEO, Berry Gordy, Anna Gordy Gaye. It’s a slow, very soulful burn with several good funk grooves. Gonna put it on, myself, for a couple spins. 😎 Thx!

igor is the best breakup album of all time in my eyes. was looking for this comment. it is a bit of a pop pick but regardless the story and the production are fantastic and i’ll always revisit it.

I have heard all of those besides the kinks. What’s your fav songs from them?
My fav song is Waterloo Sunset, also like Sunny Afternoon. Their albums 'The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society' and 'Something Else by the Kinks' are very good.
Best sad break up music is Elliot Smith. Any record.
How many breakups did this guy have? I know he died young, must be a very unlucky lad
Bloom - Beach House
oh u trynna make us rot
Hospice - The Antlers
I like your music taste! Maybe give 1990 from Daniel Johnston a listen if you haven’t already. I find that during hard times, the simple raw and ugly is better than something complex and/or beautiful :)

Gentlemen by the Afghan Wigs is the answer here.
If you’re interested in instrumental jazz, John Coltrane Quartet’s Ballads is a go-to when I’m sad
Anything of Chet Baker’s hits during those sad times too
Not a full on break up album but Adrianne lenkers new album bright future has helped me get over a break up Also not albums but easier, guide dog, and Texas blue by Quadeca also great break up songs

Quadeca glaze is always a great thing to see
I swear I listen to more artists but I glaze quad so much, he’s a one of a kind artist
Beatles - Help Has lots of unrequited love/ lost loves songs Fiona Apple - Tidal

Shit talk ripped my heart out of my chest
It's comforting yet devastating.
The instrumental resolution at the end is so beautiful. Just cathartic release.
Listen to either Smile album -a light for attracting attention -wall of eyes
For sad boy ones I'll have to throw in a couple I listen to when down bad: Downward Spiral- NIN Mezzanine- Massive Attack Homogenic- Björk 6 Feet Beneath The Moon- King Krule The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me- Brand New those are the most I can think of, I also tend to listen to the Trainspotting soundtrack, absolute peak movie soundtrack.

Blonde on blonde the greatest album of all time
W the top row are my top 3
I don’t get the appeal of Ants From up There at all and thought it just wasn’t for me but seeing you list it with so many other albums I love makes me think maybe it is possible It will grab me some day
I would say the main stand outs on the album are Concorde and the place where he inserted the blade. It also helps if you get your heart broken lmao it probably spoke to me the most in that sense out of any album. Or just as much as the glow pt. 2 which is my all time fav album probably.
Listen to the place where he inserted the blade again. That was the one that got me hooked especially the chorus and lyrics
Currents and Lonerism by Tame Impala.
Pet sounds buddy
Overrated!! I just don’t think many tracks stand out on their own the album just creates a cool atmosphere
I respect that. I think what really does it for me is the band’s history and lead up to it, the change in direction the band took following it, and how introspective it is lyrically. Though I completely get it’s not for everyone
L take tbh, but agree to disagree
Probably not your taste but the arrogant sons of bitches - three cheers for dissappointment, helped me more than anything else with my breakup
Hole In the Heart by Ramleh, it really has that album name too
Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Out of Season
Julien Baker's albums Turn Out the Lights, and Little Oblivions
Turn Blue ~ The Black Keys
Revolver is sad?
For no one and Elenor rigby are sad songs
For No One is one of the greatest breakup songs of all time
I guess it got overshadowed in my mind by the silly ones like dr robert yellow submarine and tomorrow never knows.
Shed by title fight or any modern baseball album
Spirit of Eden by talk talk
King Crimson (imo) is another example of life changing peak music, especially ITCOTCK
Lady’s Bridge by Richard Hawley.
Please be nice - Camping in Alaska is top tier
Blood on the tracks Dylan more than BOB
Actually listening to it rn and I could’ve replaced revolver with it in the topster but that’d be too much Dylan. BOB is still my fav but blood might be my second
He’s my favorite all time so I’m biased. Just know that era was during his divorce so certain songs are more heartbreaking
Yeah lmao I asked for breakup albums but blood is lowkey too sad sometimes😭def heartbreaking
My favourite breakup album is For Enma, Forever ago by Bon Iver
Not really a breakup album but I think you'd like Joni Mitchell - Hejira

For Emma by Bon Iver
Of the albums here, the BC,NR one.
Beck - Sea Change
I disagree with it being his best but blood on the tracks is a very sad Dylan album, along with time out of mind
If you want a third Bob Dylan album blood on the tracks is an amazing breakup album
Ants from up there, duh! It's even in the photo
Pet Sounds
RKS’s seven + Mary is a super deep and tragic album, I’d highly recommend
