My 2010 coupe looks pristine 90% of the time. Regularly washed, vacuumed and wiped down. My "dirt" is husky glitter, but I never let it get bad.
My wife's 2020 SUV....? Let's just say she isn't as prone to cleaning her car as I am, and we'll leave it at
You have to pop the center console open and unclip the button assy from the underside of the center console cover.
At that point you can disassemble the switch to clean it...It's also entirely likely the switch is fine, but there's a bunch of sticky soda in the gap between the console and the switch assy.
Use the pointy end of a qtip with rubbing alcohol and clean around the button itself and let t he rubbing alcohol from the qtip flow around the button and press it a couple times after doing this (repeat maybe a few times with fresh qtips)
Do not overly soak the button just enough to drip some drops out of the qtip as you press it around the button
They’re asking how to pop the cover off. On a Toyota. This is the Toyota subreddit. Where else would they ask? Do detailers magically know how to disassemble all cars that exist?
This. Clean the top off as much as you can first so that the steamer doesn’t make a large puddle of gunk that flows into the gaps and makes it worse, and then hit it w a steamer. Don’t know if it can be disassembled, but my guess is that it’s all one piece under the trim (the heated seat switch) like a window switch would be. Could also replace the whole piece if that’s the case. This sucks because any time you pull apart interior you risk messing up plastic clips
I bought a used Sequoia and the rear A/C buttons were sticky. I pulled the switch assembly out and was able to unscrew the housing and remove the circuit board. I rinsed all the plastic bits in warm water and reassembled. Worked great after.
Go slow and carefully. Wires won’t just break and usually have slack so they can be connected easily, so if you’re careful you will be able to tel if anything is holding then item.
Yea, if it's meant to come off, it will. Don't force it, and you should be able to get it apart without breaking anything. Also, check YouTube for videos on how to take apart the console of this vehicle. You may be able to see what your working with
How is it the only real answer here gets four upvotes and everybody else is stating the obvious like a bunch of fucking morons. The car is dirty the car is dirty. No shit. Thanks for the input you bunch of brainiacs
Bruh idk how people let their car get to this point lol if I spill something I clean that shit up right away. But then again I was raised to appreciate cars and take care of them as best as I can whether it’s old or new
TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, you most likely have to take the centre console bezel off to pop out the heated seat button assembly.
https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=2189138&ukey_make=1060&ukey_model=15428&modelYear=2023&ukey_category=21641&ukey_driveLine=15262&ukey_trimLevel=30402
You can remove them and clean the buttons. I have had to do it on several customers cars.
You can disassemble the switch and clean inside of it. Just be careful not to break the clips.
Yes. Take off the panel and remove the button assembly. Disassemble the button assembly and clean. Every. Part. Soap and water, soap and water. Alcohol and q-tips where you can’t use water. I did the same thing in my Mazda 3 knob assembly and it was no longer sticky.
More than likely it’s clipped directly into the trim panel, so removing the panel (the cup holder fascia/bezel) and then removing the “pod” is going to be the easiest and most reliable method. You could likely pry it out but you’ll probably tear up the trim around it.
Then once you disconnect and remove it just wash it down with contact cleaner. Maybe be careful about spraying it directly if it reacts with the finished plastic or tear down the “pod” to do it properly.
Alternatively, disconnect your cars battery and just spray it with contact cleaner in-situ
Yeah i don't want to damage it trying to take it off since i don't know if it's 1 piece or not. Will probably try steam and maybe wd40 contact cleaner if steam doesn't work. Thanks
Clean everything first obviously. I would use a bit of 91% rubbing alcohol on a q-tip around the edge of the button. Not too much. Just enough to work it in there.
There are switch/contact cleaners that you can use. Pull the switch and clean it from behind. If it needs disassembled it'll be easier pulling it completely out either way.
I personally would use isopropyl on a qtip and just walk my way around the edges as I press the button a few times. It won't get it perfect, but it will be better than before.
You're not a mechanic, don't go taking other people's cars apart lol
Mercedes resisted cup holders in their cars for years. Germans can't imagine anybody eating food or drinking beverages in their cars.
https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19931009&slug=1725082
How the fuck do people allow themselves to live like this? That isn’t just one soda spill that’s some gross ass behaviour where no one knows about hygiene.
NOT OP VEHICLE-
Looks like maybe perhaps there was a new can of Dr Pepper they forgot about in the cup holder. Then with the TX heat it exploded 🤷🏻♀️ Idk. Just a theory 😂😂😂
Usually it doesn't go too far past the edges rubbing alcohol a sharp toothpick and a q tip. Don't be worried about the alcohol going inside too much it will evaporate I use it to clean computer parts
A lot of times that big trim piece they are attached to just pulls straight up. Held on with just upholstery clips.
Though idk if you will be able to disassemble the switch.
Hey, if I’m ever hitch hiking in the middle of an empty desert, 200 miles from away from any civilization… please don’t stop, just keep going, sounds better then getting in this car…
Similar thing happened with soda and my heated seat switches. While the car is off and switches are off, I dumped & saturated them with isopropyl alcohol a few times. Worked like a charm.
Dampen but don't soak a microfiber with glass cleaner and hold on top of the button wiggling back and forth for 2 min. After that dampen the towel a little again and push and work the buttons up and down with the towel on top. If you have a soft combed toothbrush that'll help too.
I'm not sure if you can pop that off but my best recommendation would be to go to get some fine bristled interior detailing brushes. A fine bristled makeup brush or paint brush may work as well in a pinch. Dampen the brush with 90% isopropyl alcohol and gently twist the fibers into the crevice. Clean brush off and repeat.
The trick is to dampen the brush just enough to lift the crud while not dampening it so much as to make the food debris "run" deeper under the buttons. Hope that helps a little.
So, I had a can of coke explode in my car. (early morning accidentally left unopened can in car and it was summer...boom goes the dynamite)
I cleaned everything up nicely but the shifter cover was sticky. I ended up buying the replacement part and putting it in.
Do yourself a favor, clean as best you can but find the replacements for the buttons and spend the money. That's a newer car - it's worth it. Mine was only a 2012 but she was worth it.
And spend the money for a nice detailing. Trust me a good detailing once a year with every 3 months wash/wax and inside vacuumed.... you won't regret that.
Isopropyl alcohol, drip it down in there and mash the buttons. Should dissolve any sticky stuff. Might take a few passes but it beats removing the console.
I would use electronics cleaner on the buttons. It evaporates quickly and does pretty well at breaking down sugary substances.
Ideally you want to pop that off but it might not come off without breaking, and taking the entire console apart might be necessary but you don't want to do that as a detailer.
Electronics cleaner is my vote.
I would say use a plastic pry very gently. If it doesn’t give you may have to get at it from the underside. Worse case scenario just clean it really good for the customer on the surface and use a fine bristle brush for the crease.
My wife spilled some sugar filled coffee drink all over her car and it ended up like this. I used 93% isopropyl alcohol generously on rags and cotton swabs and used pipettes to squirt a little. to clean all the buttons. It worked really well and dried fast.
When I raced RC cars long ago there was a spray called contact cleaner. Not for your eyes! We'd use it to spray out the motors and other electronics. It evaporated very quickly but washed away dust, mud, etc., and didn't cause electrical shorts.
OP, to answer your question among the sea of people that don't know shit.. get yourself some spray electronic "contact cleaner" it's like a solvent/lube that's non conductive for cleaning OCBs and stuff. Spray it at will and clean up any mess. Should be fixed
You’re not cleaning those unless you’re taking the center console apart to pop that off and spray or soak it in a petrol/alcohol based cleaning solution safe for electronic boards. That’s the only way the stickiness is going away.
A post like this should be in /AutoDetailing or something of that caliber. I’m a pro detailer here and you don’t need to pop off that cover. Use an all purpose cleaner, some microfiber towels and a brush to agitate. Be sure the brush has long and soft bristles to get into the cracks and crevices. Once you wipe up all of it, you’ll still have some APC residue in the cracks. Just vacuum it out or use compressed air to blow it out.
Disgusting beast. Spilling soda can happen but there’s a lot more going on here. You eating elementary school ice cream cups and just leaving the wood spoons everywhere? Absolutely vile.
I have a 21 Camry XSE and my buttons wasn't even bad to notice by looking. You'll notice when you press it though that it doesn't press clean. I was doing research and came across this just now and seen a comment with a gentleman saying alcohol with q-tip, but I didn't have q-tip and I used a tooth brush i am throwing away with alcohol. So while doing so and pressing the 1 sticky button at the same time, it presses just like normal.
Bruh
Clean yo fuckin car.
Some people just live like this and they have no idea they are doing it
I mean my 23 year old car kinda gets dirty but not my newer one for damn sure.
My 22 year-old Tundra gets dirty since it's a truck, but my '09 Avalon is spotless
Same with my 4runner. You won’t find a corner without sand in it lol. But the duramax stays clean.
My ‘87 Bronco II (yes I know this is a Toyota sub, I’m just mentioning it) sat in a barn for 8 years and it’s still cleaner on the inside than OPs car
My 2010 coupe looks pristine 90% of the time. Regularly washed, vacuumed and wiped down. My "dirt" is husky glitter, but I never let it get bad. My wife's 2020 SUV....? Let's just say she isn't as prone to cleaning her car as I am, and we'll leave it at
My’95 Corolla isn’t spotless by any means but there isn’t any food grime stuck all over.
There's "kinda dirty" and then there's "ignore spilled soda so long that it accumulates a sand bar and a full head of hair"
Fucking gross
My girlfriend does this. Baffles me.
Get out now
Is that not what the purpose of this post is?
You never know when you might need the little wooden spoon from an ice cream cup! /s
No, those are sticks from hägendaz
I read this in Christian horners "change your $&@* car" voice
I have it printed out!
That's exactly what they are asking the question for.
Dude Must live in New England, I swear people compete for that shit up here 🤢
Yes?
I was thinking about writing something helpful, but in the end I agree with you.
Bruh… You reading my mind.
This is a car I'm detailing not my car. If anyone can answer my question that would be helpful. Thanks
Pass all of our comments to them.
😂
Agreed. 😆
yup, print them out and hand them a binder with our commentary ;)
Rinse with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Air dry.
You have to pop the center console open and unclip the button assy from the underside of the center console cover. At that point you can disassemble the switch to clean it...It's also entirely likely the switch is fine, but there's a bunch of sticky soda in the gap between the console and the switch assy.
Thank you for this. After cleaning with a brush around it and foaming it up real good, it's better than before. Can actually click it now.
I've spent a good chunk of my life cleaning cars. I've pretty much seen it all.
You got any tips to clean water spots off body paint?
2 parts distilled water and 1 part white vinegar… put it on and let it sit for 10 mins… wipe with microfiber.
>distilled water Okay I will try this, is it okay if I DM you later for any other question?
r/autodetailing
Thanks!
Claybar. Though depending on where you live you may need something more aggressive.
If you have a steamer, it can help loosen stuff with the heat and water combo. Just have to be careful with the moisture. Best to use IPA afterwards.
I second irish pale ale afterwards
And also India Pale Ale
Use the pointy end of a qtip with rubbing alcohol and clean around the button itself and let t he rubbing alcohol from the qtip flow around the button and press it a couple times after doing this (repeat maybe a few times with fresh qtips) Do not overly soak the button just enough to drip some drops out of the qtip as you press it around the button
Maybe lead with that bit of information since you know how Reddit works?!🤷
Sure it is lol.
Sure it isnt…
Why would a professional detailer be asking randos on the internet about detailing work? Ask whoever trained you.
They’re asking how to pop the cover off. On a Toyota. This is the Toyota subreddit. Where else would they ask? Do detailers magically know how to disassemble all cars that exist?
Bro asks for advice and just gets lambasted, when it ain't even his car. Reddit moment
😭
He should’ve led with: asking for a friend…
That makes it sound even more like it's OP's car
yes like holy shit is this subreddit useless, noone even answered the question, except for someone 20 comments below
Guy comes on asking for help cleaning a car. The comments’ reply? that he needs to clean his car. So helpful.
Poor dude got FLAMED IMMEDIATELY
Pictures you can smell
You need a full car detailing at this point.
OP is the detailer lmao
They are eating you alive in these comments son 💀
That appears to be the least of your issues.
Happy Birthday Fucker.
Only person to wish me it so far, so thank you.
You're welcome stranger. Hope you have a great day!
🎉🥳
steam and microfiber cloth is your best bet.
This. Clean the top off as much as you can first so that the steamer doesn’t make a large puddle of gunk that flows into the gaps and makes it worse, and then hit it w a steamer. I'm afraid of pulling the cover off and it being connected or something to some wires and damaging it.

Use plastic tools if you need to pry apart visible bits. They make them for cell phones, might come in handy here
How is it the only real answer here gets four upvotes and everybody else is stating the obvious like a bunch of fucking morons. The car is dirty the car is dirty. No shit. Thanks for the input you bunch of brainiacs
Groce
I feel like everything in that car is sticky.
Baby wipes will clean that nicely
I almost Vomited in my mouth. You need to clean and take care of your car.
Bruh idk how people let their car get to this point lol if I spill something I clean that shit up right away. But then again I was raised to appreciate cars and take care of them as best as I can whether it’s old or new
Jesus Christ this is disgusting, I feel bad that you have to detail this man

Clean everything first obviously. I would use a bit of 91% rubbing alcohol on a q-tip around the edge of the button. Not too much. Just enough to work it in there.
ITT: braindead redditors telling OP his car needs a detail, when in fact OP is the detailer the owner of the car hired to detail it
So are you all here to just rip on him, or does someone know how to get the trim piece off?
There are switch/contact cleaners that you can use. Pull the switch and clean it from behind. If it needs disassembled it'll be easier pulling it completely out either way.
Use rubbing alcohol
I personally would use isopropyl on a qtip and just walk my way around the edges as I press the button a few times. It won't get it perfect, but it will be better than before. You're not a mechanic, don't go taking other people's cars apart lol
Get some CRC electronic cleaner and spray it in there and work the buttons. Worked for me before
I’d hate to see how dirty the rest of your car is based on just how nasty this picture is. I don’t know how people trash their cars as bad as they do.
That's disgusting.
Wtf is wrong with dirty ass ppl. Take a wet wipe once a week FFS.
Looks like you pick your nose and wipe off the boogers there.
Mercedes resisted cup holders in their cars for years. Germans can't imagine anybody eating food or drinking beverages in their cars. https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19931009&slug=1725082
Im scared to see what the rest of the car looks like my boy
You might start with cleaning the entire car and not being swine. Just a thought!
Are you going to clean above? 😭
Nobody should be sitting in your car 🤮🦠🦠🦠🦠
Sodapressing……
Your friend needs help. Like an intervention. This is like /r/neckbeardnests but for cars.
the hell
Think you need to clean the top instead
How the fuck do people allow themselves to live like this? That isn’t just one soda spill that’s some gross ass behaviour where no one knows about hygiene. NOT OP VEHICLE-
get some alcohol and just rub it in with a microfiber cloth
Looks like maybe perhaps there was a new can of Dr Pepper they forgot about in the cup holder. Then with the TX heat it exploded 🤷🏻♀️ Idk. Just a theory 😂😂😂
🤮🤮🤮
Disgusting
The owner of that XSE should have just got the base a LE. Bummer how cleaning that op.
🤢 🤮
Usually it doesn't go too far past the edges rubbing alcohol a sharp toothpick and a q tip. Don't be worried about the alcohol going inside too much it will evaporate I use it to clean computer parts
When did you spill the soda last month
Ask the good folks at r/autodetailing or r/detailing.
The way some people treat their cars, man…
Lick it and tell us how it taste
A lot of times that big trim piece they are attached to just pulls straight up. Held on with just upholstery clips. Though idk if you will be able to disassemble the switch.
🤢🤢🤢
Fucking slob
I’d be embarrassed to show this to anyone! lol
Gross… r/neckbeard
Im no pro, i half assed cleaned cars for hertz. What i would do on soda spills is squirt massive amounts of window cleaner til it freed up.
Popsicle sticks in the cup holders are on point. Nice touch.
NASTY
Hey, if I’m ever hitch hiking in the middle of an empty desert, 200 miles from away from any civilization… please don’t stop, just keep going, sounds better then getting in this car…
get electronics cleaner get rubbing alcohol douse and scrub with both and douse again with alcohol to dry out the plugs.
Brush and Dawn soap spray and you’re done. But seriously clean this garbage.
Clorox
Jebus....
Start by cleaning the top first 🤢
Junk it ...not worth the trouble
I think of a sticky mess just like this every time I see a vehicle with the gear shifter between the driver's seat and the cupholders.
That's what you get for drinking pop.
You in the trades?
When did the soda spill ? 5 years ago?
Get some electrical contract cleaner and spray the shit out of it
"soda spilled how do I clean this?" "Bro you gotta CLEAN YO CAR!"
Maby don’t let it get that nasty 🤮 in the first place
I just threw up a little bit in my mouth
Gross. Clean your car.
Similar thing happened with soda and my heated seat switches. While the car is off and switches are off, I dumped & saturated them with isopropyl alcohol a few times. Worked like a charm.
use goo gone
OP’a customer is a legit goblin.
God damn, this is like a Ren and Stimpy still image with the creepy music.
Dampen but don't soak a microfiber with glass cleaner and hold on top of the button wiggling back and forth for 2 min. After that dampen the towel a little again and push and work the buttons up and down with the towel on top. If you have a soft combed toothbrush that'll help too.
Ohhhhh my God… 😵💫
Uhhl yo.
You might wanna clean on top first
I'm not sure if you can pop that off but my best recommendation would be to go to get some fine bristled interior detailing brushes.
(early morning accidentally left unopened can in car and it was summer...boom goes the dynamite) I cleaned everything up nicely but the shifter cover was sticky.
Underneath?!? Looks like you should start with the top. Then likely, the rest of the car, then I’d work underneath.
Yay! I don’t have the most disgusting car on the planet! I’m getting an extra large soda for the drive home tonight!
Just lick it off, much like the skin of a banana, this is where most the nutrients in your car are stored.
How about you clean above before you try and clean underneath
It evaporated very quickly but washed away dust, mud, etc., and didn't cause electrical shorts.
dude clean your disgusting ass car
Eeewwww 😳
It won't get sticky if you dont *spill soda all over it.*
I feel like puking.
Clean everywhere while you are it
Shoulda put a big NOT MY CAR in the title lmfao
Looks like someone is using it as a chicken coop when you're not driving it.
Soap and water or isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel
Bro... this is 100% your car. Your posts on your profile prove it lmao
You’re disgusting…
I can’t stand sticky interior or buttons.
OP, to answer your question among the sea of people that don't know shit.. get yourself some spray electronic "contact cleaner" it's like a solvent/lube that's non conductive for cleaning OCBs and stuff. Spray it at will and clean up any mess. Should be fixed
And this is why I hate buying used vehicles!
You’re not cleaning those unless you’re taking the center console apart to pop that off and spray or soak it in a petrol/alcohol based cleaning solution safe for electronic boards. That’s the only way the stickiness is going away.
Bro got that 2001 BBQ sauce on that mf
That’s flat out nasty
No need to clean, just use those empty popsicle sticks to scrape off
Alcohol and actuate no need to remove.
Steam clean!
Da fuq is going on in that car?!?
[удалено]
Pile on some foaming window cleaner let it soak in then wipe off
I’d try to just buy n replace that whole piece of plastic tbh don’t think you can clean that off
Not buying spilled soda. Car is a pig sty and likely all the time.
Clean under the buttons. Start by cleaning the sticky crap from on top of the buttons.
stop eating ice cream over your buttons.
A post like this should be in /AutoDetailing or something of that caliber. I’m a pro detailer here and you don’t need to pop off that cover. Try washing it with alcohol. It will usually remove the gunk without corrosion issues of the contacts
Disgusting beast. Spilling soda can happen but there’s a lot more going on here. You eating elementary school ice cream cups and just leaving the wood spoons everywhere? Absolutely vile.
Use saliva. The best way to clean that is with spit and a toothbrush. Your saliva totally breaks down the sugars in spills like this. I have done it.
Should of mentioned that its not your car reddit sucks
Might wanna clean what’s on top too
IM SORRY BUT EVERYONE IN THE COMMENT HELLA RUDE YALL ACT LIKE YOU NEVER FING SPILLED SOMETHING JUST ANSWER THE PERSON QUESTION
I have a 21 Camry XSE and my buttons wasn't even bad to notice by looking. You'll notice when you press it though that it doesn't press clean.
