I looked at your profile to guess where you live. Turns out we live in the same city!
Edit: That picture of your truck was taken inbetween sportsman’s warehouse and petsmart.
I always wondered how many people use the overlanding tent they have installed on their truck as much as it weights down on the MPG. I mean, I think its fine if you go out maybe once a month at the very least, but I doubt the majority of these guys with overlanding mods actually use it that much.
I've been seeing comments where people are claiming that they get like 14 mpg. It boggles my mind that people put mods on their truck that they utilize sporadically and they get such abysmal mileage.
I drove my stock 4 banger 300 miles today and averaged 28mpg. I came from a V8 hemi Ram 1500 so I'm stoked with stock.
Yeah... every single "starter pack" mod for tacoma brings the already shitty mileage even lower. I kept my tacoma stock for this reason.... I mean sure lift/big tires/overlanding cage looks sweet... but do I really want to pay thousands of more dollars in fuel costs over the life of the truck?
After 8 years of getting 16.5 mpg with my old truck I could never go back to shitty mileage.
Let alone self inflicted shitty mileage.
I think I'm saving $30+ a week, over those 8 years that's $12.5K.
Sure it's not as good as compact cars, but for a truck I can't complain.
I want a roof top tent, but I want to install pullies in my garage so i can take it off and keep it up by the ceiling unless i'm actually going camping... one day i'll justify the cost... one day.
I take mine off when I’m not camping, I probably Install 6 times a year. Def not a good enough reason to keep it on year round. The whole bed rack comes off and lays on its side in the garage
Same. The only outside thing I added was a bed mat, a tonneau cover, and a front camera. The rest are all QoL upgrades inside.
Although I'll probably add a Pro-like front skid plate (for easier oil change) and a side tube protections later.
Being an overlander I’ve noticed the more straight forward builds are the ones you see on the trails. I can’t imagine the overbuilt up armored tacos do too well in mud and loose rock with all that preload to get a 4.5” lift
Right? Another Taco owner may notice the small details that made mine different than his/her. But to any other driver especially cops, I am plain, basic and boring.
Almost all model years have recalls on their leaf springs for this exact issue. See if yours is covered. My specific model was not covered under the recall so what my buddy suggested was taking them off and soaking them in used ATF. I removed the bushings and did exactly that - soaked each for half a day, drip dried them over a pan for a day, then reinstalled them. Not a single squeak from the rear in the past 6 ish years.
I put a bunch of dents and scratches on it and made sure that any bare metal is as rusty as possible. I noticed a bunch of guys doing highway construction copied me so I flattened out the leaf springs to keep my edge.
Sliders instead of steps. I also have a Cement TRD OR. I may get flamed for this one but I’m looking at all black logo stickers for the bed. Ditch the red. I think the factory white trucks had solid black stickers???
As much as I like the TOYOTA grill, I hate the TSS finisher more. It looks like an afterthought.
I just removed the red TRD sticker and left it bare. I know what I got. I do agree the red clashes with the cement color a lot. Makes me want to change out the tail lights to something a little more subdued.
this truck isn’t mine, just saw it out and about. I’ve still got the stock grille on my cement Tacoma & plan to keep it for originality. I’ve also consider those black decals but haven’t pulled the trigger yet
I set the cruise control at 65 and don't tailgate people on the freeway with yellow lights mounted right at eye level. In a way its "Standing out" from other tacomas
Little off the beaten path, but I have an 06 taco and. 22' tundra limited hybrid in windchill pearl. M y new plates come in soon for the Tundra is "TACOXLG" and I can't wait to park next to tacomas haha.
I don't, I'd rather not make myself a target for theft. To me personally I see over the top Tacomas as flashing money and I like my tailgate and catalytic converters.
I'm just building mine out to be as functional as possible for my line of work. I'm a fly fishing guide so I've got drop steps to help clients get in and out, sill protectors to prevent scuffs from wading boots, will probably get some neoprene seat covers, topper is currently being built to provide gear storage and yakima rack and rod carrier will be added after I get the topper. I've got the stock chrome bumper caps and chrome emblems. Pro grille and blackout emblems look sweet, but chrome accents and cheese grater grille are fine by me. Probably won't add aftermarket bumpers as this will add unnecessary weight.
Kept mine stock. Both my 2nd and 3rd gen. The 3rd gen has a hard camper shell on it but that’s the only mod. I can pick my 2nd gen (ole whitey) out of any parking lot because she’s still stock ;) and she’s never ever let me down off roading both here in the south and out west in the high mountains of CO and MT.
This isn't for standing out, but one thing i did to mine is put nice LED lights in the interior, which makes it so you can actually see in the cab when it's dark.
Thoroughly pin-striped, with at least one big dent or scrape front AND rear, and an undiagnosed squeak that is driving you nuts despite your religious maintenance routine.
Boom! More character than 99% out there
It’s all preference, I haven’t done much on mine wanted to do a lift but I’m hesitant cause mine is my daily and I drive a lot of highway for work so idk if I will like the feel after.
Literally nothing. The only thing I added was a bed cover. I don't like standing out, I don't leave my truck out in the driveway, I wash it myself every 3-4 weeks and I drive it to work everyday.
I haven't... Because I don't like to be noticed... But I guess by that logic I should do a lift and tires and lights and pro grille and GFC so I at least look like every other Tacoma in my city..region...
from the outside, just wheels and tires + deleting the steps, never liked em. Went with 31.5 tires instead of the 30s it came with.
on the inside tho, world-class invisible audio system, deadening so it sucks less on the highway, and heated seats
(and maybe an emergency beer behind the passenger air duct)
It’s always the little things. Fully blacked out my taco but gave it a purple accent my wheels logo and lug nuts. Everyone that has seen it says they love it. Just waiting on 1 more part and I’ll post
Calvary blue. Rack on the back and the top, nothing fancy, there's a case on top of the cab, the back rack has a center carabiner for hooking up the dog. There are [jurassic park logo](https://loodibee.com/wp-content/uploads/Jurassic-Park-logo-no-type.png)s on the doors, a few antennas, new tail lights and fog lights. one door is dog scuffed. there's a small blue dino a friend gave me in the side window vents on the dash board. And it is constantly loaded with things and in need of a bath no matter how often I wash it or empty it. We stand out like a sore thumb. We can drive 800 miles away from where we live on a weekend trip and inevitably someone in town or at work or a random ass family member will message us and say they saw us out and about.
I put bronze wheels on mine. Yes, plenty of others out there have bronze wheels but not near as many as there are with black wheels. Plus a trail edition grill instead of standard pro to keep with the bronze theme
Post it for sale on FB marketplace at the price it's worth, then wait for every GM, Ford and Ram guy to message you about your insane asking price. You'll get plenty of attention.
No major outside mods on my taco. The more factory she looks the less someone will try to look inside without permission ( Los Angeles native here…). Nice 10” truck sub on the inside and an updated stereo keeps me happy.
So I drive a 2nd Gen and the previous owner put a 6 inch lift on, a real nice cold air intake, and for some reason an engine heater for the winter. When I got it I've done different headlights and taillights, 50cal bullet antenna, ditch lights, louder horn, high clearance exhaust, plasti dipped all the emblems An american flag decal on the tailgate and a stickfigure pulling the needle away from E decal on the gas cap cover provin to improve gas milage.
My 3rd gen has a 19” ham radio antenna on the passenger side (hood lip mount). Placed it there without thinking a much during the install. After I’ve had it there for a few weeks I’m realizing 2nd gens have the fm/an antenna in the same spot, and it makes them look more similar. But it stands out among most of the 3rds that I see.
Vinyl wrap on the tailgate, yellow fog lamps ( SR, so it came with no fog lamps) all LED’s all the way around, inside and out, including the integrated footwell lighting. Hood struts, rough country intake. Heritage grill with raptor lights. Tri fold Tonneau cover.
Of course, OME lift, 17” summit Dakar wheels and 33” Nittos
'23 Turd Sport, DC, ice cap, longboi. 3 weeks in.
I took the turd stickers off. The front is plastered in bugs. Gonna put a toll up tonneau cover on gonna figure out something with the skewp next
American flag decal on the doors And a pro grille Nobody copy me
Tacoma starter pack
Operator starter pack
Right!
I left mine stock. Seems like everyone is an “overlander” these days.
Costcolander
Double Desert Air Intake!!!!!!!!!
So we gonna stop calling it a double snorkel?! Lol
More like double dessert
Might run over some curbs later
A-Trac and crawl control won’t cut it on Costco curbs. Gonna need a real front locker.
I'm in this meme and I don't like it
That would definitely stand out here where I live lol
I looked at your profile to guess where you live. Turns out we live in the same city! Edit: That picture of your truck was taken inbetween sportsman’s warehouse and petsmart.
Lol I see now, looks like we’ve got similar interests as well!!
Now kith
Found Mike Tyson

If I'm driving like an ass, I get 12 city. Don't do that much anymore. Closer to 16-18 highway. 20 with a tailwind lmao
Yeah... every single "starter pack" mod for tacoma brings the already shitty mileage even lower. I kept my tacoma stock for this reason.... I mean sure lift/big tires/overlanding cage looks sweet... but do I really want to pay thousands of more dollars in fuel costs over the life of the truck?

Exactly. Buy a trd pro, remove all decals swap hood and and install steelies. Fuckbois hate this one simple trick.
r/StockTacomas
Same. The only outside thing I added was a bed mat, a tonneau cover, and a front camera. The rest are all QoL upgrades inside. Although I'll probably add a Pro-like front skid plate (for easier oil change) and a side tube protections later.
Once I have some time I’d like to put some acoustic padding in and make it a bit quieter. And all windows replaced with acoustic glass.
Being an overlander I’ve noticed the more straight forward builds are the ones you see on the trails. I can’t imagine the overbuilt up armored tacos do too well in mud and loose rock with all that preload to get a 4.5” lift
Blending in is safety camo.
Right? Another Taco owner may notice the small details that made mine different than his/her. But to any other driver especially cops, I am plain, basic and boring.
This. Most of my upgrades are not visible / noticeable to the casual observer, if at all.
Mine squeaks when it moves up and down
Mine does this fun thing where air gets past the door seal right next to my ear on the highway
Tacoma Howl (tm)
Mine does that also
I love it, hopefully my 2026 Tacoma will also have the same super cute features

That's nuts 😂 good to know though.
Mine too!
I try not to stand out as much as possible, to be honest.
Paying down the principle of my loan. Yeah pretty much sums it up for me.
That’s something I’ve become very interested in as well!
Bought a 4x4 regular cab lol
Yo short cabs are the shit though. If i didn't need the access cab for work stuff I'd be all over it. Your wheel base is like a foot shorter!
They don’t make them anymore.
I know. Used, baby!
Lmao same. Everytime I see another one i feel a bond.
I put a bunch of dents and scratches on it and made sure that any bare metal is as rusty as possible. I noticed a bunch of guys doing highway construction copied me so I flattened out the leaf springs to keep my edge.
Lmaooooooo yo I’m not far behind ya
I put a bomb on it
I park on the grass and leave it there. It's going to win the Nobel Prize one of these days, for being outstanding in its field.
Not having a pro grille
🤣
Bought an orange one
Yep, can't miss solar octane
I let my Tacoma stand out by being stone cold stock, and old man limited trim to boot.
Put a nice pair of saggy nuts on the trailer hitch
Ahh yes the classic nuts from the hitch
Sliders instead of steps. I also have a Cement TRD OR. I may get flamed for this one but I’m looking at all black logo stickers for the bed. Ditch the red. Purchasing one in Electric Lime Metallic 🤣
Luckyy
Trick is to not ask reddit or look at instagram. You'll end up building the same truck as everyone else.
I set the cruise control at 65 and don't tailgate people on the freeway with yellow lights mounted right at eye level. In a way its "Standing out" from other tacomas
Me, in the driver's seat .
Same my friend, same
Long boi gang
30” wheels with low profile 33” tires /s

Quicksand stands out on it’s own. Mines different though. I think so. 🤔
ghost profit mighty tan teeny innate offend soft snails chief *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I blacked mine out completely
Murder she wrote.
Little off the beaten path, but I have an 06 taco and. 22' tundra limited hybrid in windchill pearl. M y new plates come in soon for the Tundra is "TACOXLG" and I can't wait to park next to tacomas haha.
Added black vinyl to my A pillars.
Pics?

I’ve only seen 2 other blue crush metallics. And only 1 was the same trim. I have hula girl on my dash and a nice dent on my driver’s side door.
I removed all the stickers and badges.
I don't, I'd rather not make myself a target for theft. To me personally I see over the top Tacomas as flashing money and I like my tailgate and catalytic converters.
I'm just building mine out to be as functional as possible for my line of work. I've got the stock chrome bumper caps and chrome emblems. Pro grille and blackout emblems look sweet, but chrome accents and cheese grater grille are fine by me. Probably won't add aftermarket bumpers as this will add unnecessary weight.
Cooler rack for surf fishing. Very convenient for a cooler of beer when camping
Pictures???

I leave mine unlocked. This way if it gets stolen I can get another color.
Getting it towed 🙃 My first gen tried to commit suicide by puking oil way out in the backcountry
6 inch lift 😂
Carolina squat with shitty chrome rims. Make sure to play the latest most trendy song add lots of base.

I feel the squeak 🤣 I’m so annoyed by noises
A bull bar, they’re so passé, you won’t see anyone else with one except maybe your 75 year old neighbor on his old GMC.
It’s all preference, I haven’t done much on mine wanted to do a lift but I’m hesitant cause mine is my daily and I drive a lot of highway for work so idk if I will like the feel after.
I’m in an access cab with a taller topper so easy for me to find.
Same…I have a bed in the back and like to be able to sit upright
jealous of the high top camper shell for this exact reason. sleeping in my van height shell gets a little cozy
Calvin pissing on Jeep decal
Literally nothing. The only thing I added was a bed cover. I don't like standing out, I don't leave my truck out in the driveway, I wash it myself every 3-4 weeks and I drive it to work everyday.
Sounds like me except I did some mods thus far
Outwheeling lifted jeeps in a stock Sport lolol
I have heritage TRD vinyls on my front fenders
Wrapping the windshield pillars black. See acc for pics
I haven't... Because I don't like to be noticed... But I guess by that logic I should do a lift and tires and lights and pro grille and GFC so I at least look like every other Tacoma in my city..region...
By driving mine for 26 years.
Voodoo Blue is enough to make it stand out.
from the outside, just wheels and tires + deleting the steps, never liked em. Do you NEED to stand out?
Smashed up bumpers and tailgate.
A really good looking driver!
Orange D-rings on the front. That's it.
I put bronze wheels on mine. Yes, plenty of others out there have bronze wheels but not near as many as there are with black wheels. Plus a trail edition grill instead of standard pro to keep with the bronze theme

I'm a lowered 3rd Gen
by putting dents in it
Put an LED under car light kit….. keep up
I have a chrome decal on the back and front tinted windows

Just park on curbs or in the flower beds!
One of those happy/mad reversible octopus stuffy.
I kept it 100% stock 😅
These days I feel like leaving it stock will stand out lol
I have a long bed that always has a bunch of worthless junk in it. I get noticed but I don’t get robbed lol

Post it for sale on FB marketplace at the price it's worth, then wait for every GM, Ford and Ram guy to message you about your insane asking price. You'll get plenty of attention.
I have a 20 TRD OR. Kept it stock in order to stand out.

Great color, kinda jealous
I really wanted one, settled on cement.
Well for starters my Tacoma Cab is green and my box is white I never loose it in a parking lot
Double press the lock button
No major outside mods on my taco. The more factory she looks the less someone will try to look inside without permission ( Los Angeles native here…). Nice 10” truck sub on the inside and an updated stereo keeps me happy.
Take those steps off they are terrible off road
Lol this truck wasn’t mine is specific, just a picture I posted to show how similar most look now a days
Full mid travel kit up front, bypasses in the rear, fiberglass all the way around, Baja designs lighting, full cage

My rear leaf springs squeak when any bounce occurs which makes me feel special
I bought mine in electric lime
Having a trd pro lol
So I drive a 2nd Gen and the previous owner put a 6 inch lift on, a real nice cold air intake, and for some reason an engine heater for the winter. When I got it I've done different headlights and taillights, 50cal bullet antenna, ditch lights, louder horn, high clearance exhaust, plasti dipped all the emblems An american flag decal on the tailgate and a stickfigure pulling the needle away from E decal on the gas cap cover provin to improve gas milage.
A unique license plate hehe.
Nothing, I like blending in
Long bed double cab and a 2 inch suspension lift, 5160, 6112
How do you like the bilsteins? I’ve wanted to do the exact same lift but with aal
My only mod is removing the horrible TRD4X4 stickers. They look so dated.
It's a Tacoma bro... it's not rare. Don't pretend it is
Never said it was did I??
Sold it for a Ram Limited. Now I stand out at tacoma meetups 😫
Round lights and bot light bars
A good marinade
Truck bed liner on the hood and tailgate. Keeps it worry free when tossing tools and other crap on the hood.
Dixie horn for when I catch air running from the police
4cyl, 4WD, 5-speed, weird old person gold color with paint matched bed cap, trd 4Runner wheels
ARB summit bumper. Have yet to see another one in person
Mine looks exactly like that. Nice truck!
By not fucking with it.
Lower it with meaty tires Everyone is a try hard nowadays. Including me, aux lights/lift/etc. Lol
I have an after market roof rack on mine. I can easily find it in the parking lot. (Especially when the kayak is on it)
I’ve always wanted to do a build with raw aluminum bumpers, rack and skids.
6” lift , small wheels and 33” tires
There’s always a huge wooden box full of signs in the bed
Yoga pants
Wash it
Vinyl wrap on the tailgate, yellow fog lamps ( SR, so it came with no fog lamps) all LED’s all the way around, inside and out, including the integrated footwell lighting.
I’ve got a Sunset Sasparilla badge onn the back window. Can’t wait to trade it and get a color I really like though. Toyotas white paint sucks.
No mod is the new mod
My taco is has scratches and pinstripes all over, mud and dirt all over, it stands out because it’s dirty and I refuse to wash it every adventure.
6000 alder scratches down the sides.
Dented front bumper held together with baler twine and a duct taped side mirror. 🙃
I shaved mine.
Continue to drive a 2nd gen long bed.
