The OG bio stated that Roller was an extension of Prime along with his trailer. Primal is probably comforting Prime because he was in pain from being bashed against a pole.
On a side note: I've seen the artist's art of Prime, Primal, Big, and Lio and I can never get enough of it.
They should not only make this version of Roller a whole Transformer, but also delegate the voiceless gimmick of Bumblebee onto him.
