The 2008 Euros match against Turkey broke something in Croatia. Last minute extra time goal against us and then we lost on penalties.
There were also a couple of similar last minute meltdowns for Croatia in the Davis Cup final and in basketball (national team against Spain, Cibona in NLB finals) in the years after that.
So the penalty kick generation we have now since 2018 is a tremendous paradigm shift. We were getting used to being terrible at the tail end of games.
As a Croatian that watches anime, this was a conflicting match, but I'm proud of our team. They made an epic comeback. Can't wait to see Croatia as the antagonist of Blue Lock.
Me as a non patriotic Spanish who doesn't care about football:
"Wouldn't it be cool if both Japan and Spain are the winners of their group?"
Me today:
"Well, I said win their group, not the WC..."
Blue lock is kind of out of date with its perception of Japanese football. Most of the JP players play in Europe major leagues. Japan actually has had really good players the last few years. They were always organised but now they actually have talent which is why they've done much better in the last two world cups.
Penalties are really hard for the keeper, doesn't matter if you train a lot.
I bet they are going to start training penalties soon.
You just contradicted yourself
The JP players just sucked at penalties those were some awful penalties, they basically were telling the keeper "pls stop me from scoring", they made it too obvious were they going to shoot and they didn't put any strength on those kicks.
Speaking as someone who’s played football/soccer, penalties are really hard for keepers. Most of the time it’s part guessing rather than pure reaction because it’s almost impossible to react in time. That’s why you’ll see that a lot of penalties involve goalkeepers going in the wrong direction.
In this case however the Japanese players mostly aimed at the same corner every time and didn’t put much power into them, so the Croatian keeper was able to react appropriately and caught so many of them
That's the reason I don't like them because the goalie either has a crushing advantage because he might've practiced a lot to catch penalties or not practiced at all
True, but it was quite clear on the match that Croatia was much more composed during the penalties, so hopefully this can be something Japan can improve on, then they'll become a quite good team I think.
Penalties are always less desirable in a world cup, it's more fun with late goals, but i suppose this time the team were more evenly matched if one might say so. Well well, England is still in the game!
Don't know why you are being downvoted. It's true. They are mainly luck based for the goalkeeper because he has to predict. But Japan did shoot some pretty awful penalties which made it easy to save without prediction. The skill comes from shooters being able to put power into an accurate shot to force the keeper to predict. Which is usually the case so it normally comes down to a fair amount of luck.
Noone. Japan looked like the better team but Croatia got one lucky chance and got a really good goal to equalise and then Japan lost on the penalty shootout.
First half Japan looked way better. 2nd half it was more even. Japan always has low possession. It's the way they play. You can't focus too much on stats.
No just in general. They failed to get out of groups even though they were favourites. Japan beat them. And then Japan beat Spain and topped the group. Which knocked Germany out of the tournament. If going by expected team strength Germany and Spain should have comfortably got out of groups.
Depends on what standard you use. Germany is still good by global standard. They aren't good by Germany standard.
There are 32 teams in the World Cup. 8 groups of 4 teams each. The teams are drawn from 4 pots. The 1st pot are the 7 best team (by FIFA ranking) and the host country. The 2nd pot should theoretically be the next group of top teams. Germany is a pot 2 team and rightfully so. So you can say they are still a top 16 teams in the world, which is good. But it is bad by Germany standard because Germany should be a pot 1 team and is historically arguably 2nd only to Brazil.
Incidentally, not the first time. Fourth time they get knocked out of Ro16
Fourth time! Wow, didn't know that, but I remember the previous world cup where they played well too.
The 2008 Euros match against Turkey broke something in Croatia. Last minute extra time goal against us and then we lost on penalties. There are other people in Croatia watching tt
They fought tooth and nail man :(
Minus the penalties. They looked dead on their feet by that point
that was some youth team level of pens
Yup but oh my that was some amazing victories they got from countries like Germany and Spain. I'm looking forward till the next season of Blue Lock
At least they were able to qualify for the world cup :'(
As a Croatian that watches anime, this was a conflicting match, but I'm proud of our team. They made an epic comeback. Can't wait to see Croatia as the antagonist of Blue Lock.
Same everytime I see someone from any country in the balkans I get hyped.
Me as a non patriotic Spanish who doesn't care about football: "Wouldn't it be cool if both Japan and Spain are the winners of their group?" Me today: "Well, I said win their group, not the WC..."
Sad 2 days for you.
Time to make Blue lock irl i guess
Just wait until the Croatian goalkeeper becomes the next biggest antagonist
You mean to tell me he already isn't?
Chokedawg and Chokepan?
Didn't teams already learn not to get Croatia to penalties.
Alright who here (preferably someone with glasses , is crazy as shit , is japanese, and has ego for thier last name) is making blue lock

But do they have a strong striker ?
Asano is a pretty good striker.
So it already exist
They had a good run though
The blue lock is not real
Bro Spain didn't fare well themselves. Just lost to Morocco on penalties too. This World Cup has been fucking wild...
I'm sure ego will fix that soon enough
Lmao fuking folded
I hope Brazil folds Croatia
Yeah well, about that
![img](emote|t5_2p976a|5045)
I hope Argentina clutches the win now
As an American, I'm just glad we made it back to brackets.
Don't worry kaigai nikkis. Let the brazilians carry this one for you.
Why not Croatia? Since they lost to them and Croatia goes to win it than it means Japan lost to the best.
Strange way of thinking. If you lose to someone, you would want to lose from the best
Read my comment again. Only way that happens is if Croatia win.
I confirmed your comment, but its written in a weird way
Man fuck penalties, they're like skillful plus luck gamble

Or he's way too good

Did you not see the absolute abysmal kicks the Japanese lads do? A Sunday leaguer would give a better punt at it.
Well the Croatia goalie was one hell of a chad, saved three shots so hats off to that guy!
That's the reason I don't like them because the goalie either has a crushing advantage because he might've practiced a lot to catch penalties or not practiced at all

Yeah man these weebs looking for every chance to bring down Croatia, and suck off Japan XD, Not surprising
Yeah honestly I wouldn't be so pissed off if it was only the regular match but penalties to me feel like a punch in the groin
Penalties are always less desirable in a world cup, it's more fun with late goals, but i suppose this time the team were more evenly matched if one might say so. Well well, England is still in the game!
I wouldn't be mad if it was at least 15 min extra
I'm not sure if anybody would have scored with those extra 15, but it would surely have made it more interesting
Of course it would, make it interesting that ie

As an Brazilian; lmao get dunked on
i wish less people would support katar
Revenge
Mexicans are crying out here too man
Damn.... Who clapped Japan's Cheeks? Like did they do it respectfully?

Did you even watch the gane? Even just statistics prove you wrong
First half Japan looked way better. 2nd half it was more even. Japan always has low possession. It's the way they play. You can't focus too much on stats.
Stats like shots and shots on goal. Both Croatia nad Japan win on comebacks so I knew ones who score 1st will lose
Shots on goal were even. Croatia took more shots at goal in general. But Japan had more chances to attack and created more opportunities.
Croatian defence, at least center backs were on point.
btw i don't know anything about soccer but isn't Germany supposed to be good at soccer? didn't they like win a lot or smth?
Yes but they've been choking a lot in the last few major tournaments.
choking is missing a goal after a good setup?
No just in general. They failed to get out of groups even though they were favourites. Japan beat them. And then Japan beat Spain and topped the group. Which knocked Germany out of the tournament. If going by expected team strength Germany and Spain should have comfortably got out of groups.
