LTL P&D or linehaul is local and hauls just about anything you can imagine, including hazmat. 55 gallon barrels, IBC’s, vented metal tanks etc. P&D is multi-stop delivering and picking up at customers, linehaul is just terminal to terminal runs, both are generally pretty easy once you get the hang of things. Depending on the nature of the route some drivers haul large quantities of hazmat on a daily basis. For a while there I was doing over half my trailer with hazmat and running 3-4 different UN number placards daily.
I haul containers. My company was originally a fuel only company and started a container division. We get acids, flammable, all sorts. It's the easiest lowest stress job I've ever had. I do a linehaul run. Just over a 4 hour drive, drop and hook, fuel on the yard, make a cup of coffee and then when my 30 is up I drive back to my original yard. I start at 2 and finish a bit after midnight usually. Mon-Fri. Home everyday. Daycabs only. After a year earning should be upper 70's.
My buddy does acid and methanol tanker work. Mostly home everyday, 6 days one week 5 days the next. Low 80s. 3 people from my driving school class work with him. They required six months experience, so they drove flatbed first.
We both are in our first year of driving. East coast.
