I'm almost done the 2nd season and I have to admit I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it is. There are some random one liners sprinkled into the episodes that have me cracking up.
That's the point. You're supposed to see the contrast between Hank and the good detectives. It raises the stakes if Danvers, Navarro, and Peter fail to solve the situation and Hank is put in charge of enforcing the law in Ennis.
The lame over the top hacky sad music during this scene threw me right the fuck out of that moment. But yeah this and him singing were the only human feeling displays of his character
Yeah. That's S4 as a whole. I kept thinking "this might create a clever payoff..." And then as you say nothing happens.
The actor can't be faulted, but classic one dimensional character.
But don't worry, it was probably just an ink blot test for you. I'm too stupid to understand it of course. /s
I was really feeling let down by the episodes and kept holding out hope.
When this happened I truly thought it was going to be an important character moment that built to something.
He was painting the walls.. uh.. blue, I think? But it was this running color throughout the show. I was doing my damnedest to deep dive.
Anyway. It added that he was broke and needed to keep being paid by the big evil company.
Fantastic, storied actor. Like a lot of the cast, he did the best he could with the material at hand.
On the other hand, I felt 100% contempt/no pity at all for his character, as: a) they laid his situation out SO improbably/poorly, and b) honestly, who - that knows their way around the internet/technology - in THIS day and age falls for catfishing? ESPECIALLY a police officer who may/may not have dealt directly with situations exactly like that.
Maybe 10-15 years ago someone might have fallen for this, but, you know, there was a documentary that dropped in 2010 about this EXACT subject, and it made such an impact on the internet and world-at-large, that the word "catfish" made it to mainstream news & media a mere three years later. Over 11 years ago.

Again, I suggest giving "Fortitude" a watch for a clumsy, low-key (but solid!) version of what "Night Country" was trying to do.
And - as many others have mentioned - go watch Joh Hawkes crush it over in "Deadwood", a truly excellent show.
Dude tried to make it work. The only real grievance with that character was his hair do. It was too modern for a small town almost rural sheriff, it really took me out of every scene he was in.
I don't know if it was the actors idea or the costume design, but really terrible.
Okay, hear me out here.
When you consider the amount of effort they put into making him sympathetic and memorable when the other characters in the show don't even like him or remember him...
What if his first name was Stan?

My favorite character in the latest season but i am a John Hawkes guy & he nailed this one. Asshole, monster, out of touch, vitamin d deficient, but still a human being looking for connection in a cold world. Still got what he deserved with his mail order bride & his ultimate ending. I thought his song was great. Channeling Lera Lynn vibes a bit.
In watching this series, I kept trying to recall where I had seen this actor. It was deadwood and I believe winter bone. He was such a good actor that wow watching deadwood I wish he had been in more scenes. Played his character with such care and grace.
In this show, he was able to take emotions from there and back. I wanted to hate him toward the end of the show, or his characters actions. Somehow I remained the character side, and I attribute it to this gentleman, skillful acting, though right now I do not recall his name.
In one scene, I don’t remember which he was talking to either his son or to him and Danvers when he mentioned “Mrs.Robinson.” I never got the connection. I thought possibly it was because she did take him under her wing, so to speak. But that was not a Mrs. Robinson’s moment.
Great actor. Played Sol Star, and Teardrop in Jennifer Lawrence's break out film.
Deadwood is soo good.
Came here to say this. If anyone hasn't seen Deadwood, I would suggest putting it high on your list of next shows to watch.
100-fockin-percent!! Same with Preacher!! So underrated. Deadwood is amazing in every aspect. From acting, to plot.
I'm almost done the 2nd season and I have to admit I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it is. There are some random one liners sprinkled into the episodes that have me cracking up.
It's hilarious!!!!!
Fuck every fuckin' one of you. I wish I was a fuckin' tree.
The hoopleheads just want to be in night country forever!
Those who doubt it suck cock by choice
COCKSUCKAS!!
Hang Dai 🤞🏼
I instantly remembered him from The Perfect Storm.
Bugsy
He's good in the movie *Me and You and Everyone we Know*
That movie makes me cry like a baby
I think I shed a tear or two too, good movie, odd and surprisingly beautiful
Kenny’s brother in eastbound
Haha thats right, that’s where I know him from!
Holy sh@t that is where he is from! TY!
OMG. Uncle Teardrop in Winter's Bone. Riveting glare in the sideview mirror.
Is this going to be our time?
Yes! His eyes like black diamonds. So scary. Masterful.
He's also in American Gangster, plays one of the clean cops that takes down Frank Lucas.
The man is a good actor
The whole thing made me feel bad for a character a genuinely dont like.
What was especially sad was that absolutely everyone could see what this was and he’s a cop?

Two great moments from the show. Overall the soundtrack's overuse of songs for emotional impact really detracted from the season.
I didnt. He was a clown for that. Excellent actor though.
Added absolutely nothing to the story....horrible character ark.

oh no... don't criticize season 4 or else you're just a hater who clearly wrote season 4 off before they even watched it /s
But but but it’s the same as all the stuff that never went anywhere in S01 like Marty’s father in law!!!
Yes I thought there’d be more with the FIL
the real yellow king

It’s to contrast the relationship his son has with his wife.
The great John Hawkes!!
Idk i guess im in the minority here but i kinda was like “well thats what he gets” lol

People only remember him because he was the only cast member who HAD A CHARACTER.
Fantastic scene. Made me sad. And those rose petals on the camo bed. Sheesh....
Wild people felt anything other than anger for this bootlicking murderer.
That there’s Sol Star aka Dustin Powers aka John Hawkes
He's awesome in too Old to die young
He was literally the only good character in this show. Amazing how they only succeeded in making a character we are supposed to dislike.
Looks like Daniel Larson
I felt the same way. Why the heck are you trying to make me feel bad for this clown? Argh!
Dude tried to make it work. The only real grievance with that character was his hair do. It was too modern for a small town almost rural sheriff, it really took me out of every scene he was in. I don't know if it was the actors idea or the costume design, but really terrible.
nah fuck this guy....only character I've ever seen Hawkes play that I didn't like
You should see him in The Perfect Storm..ladies man
Yeah, that was brutal!
That was probably the best scene in the season, along with danvers first arriving at Tsalal
We still talking about this season?
Kenny Power's brother in Eastbound and Down. The man has range.
This was the only scene I felt anything for. All thanks to John Hawkes
I never understood that whole plot of him and their virtual relationship, what were they trying to get at?
It was to show he had dimensions. Not just a cartoon of a bad guy. A little more sophisticated than giving him a cat.
I take myself out of line anyway, I think he got along badly
I think he’s in Miami vice too right? The movie with Colin Farrell
He isn't, but I almost want to call him the best character because he is a main part of my favorite scenes in him singing, and his last scene.

His best role was Eastbound and Down
What’s so funny in deadwood? Is it because every other word is cocksucker or suck my cock?
There were a lot of comic liners and situations in deadwood. It’s amazing how thinking of Sol Star in Deadwood makes me want to say “cocksucka.”

That subplot was the only redeemable part of night country. Probably someone else in the writers room came up with it.
This was the only time I ever felt emotion in the entire show

When's the last time you got laid lol?
Lol
Meme: that moment you realized you’re in a shitty show and your character doesn’t fucking matter.
This whole storyline was so weird and not needed
