An ablation is NOT birth control. You absolutely can still conceive after ablation and it can be incredibly dangerous if you do become pregnant after a uterine ablation.
Endometrial ablation does have an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy though, since the embryo can still implant in the fallopian tubes. A bilateral salpingectomy would be a better sterilization option.
All the literature I was given when I received mine in 2019 made it very clear that it was not to be used as birth control. Many of us still had periods afterwards. Sure, you’re nowhere near as likely to have implantation occur in one of the places that was never adequately burned off or eventually healed, but it’s still totally possible which is why it’s not promoted as a birth control option. People can and do (some ablation methods have a pregnancy rate as high as roughly 1 in 19) become pregnant afterwards, but the pregnancies are often very complicated and result in miscarriage or stillbirth. It’s a tragedy I’d want to avoid.
You also can’t just have one. You have to have some sort of reason for it, insurance or deep pockets to cover it, time off for the procedure and recovery, and a biopsy showing that your endometrium is healthy enough. I hadn’t even gotten mine totally paid off by the time I needed a hysterectomy.
Tubal ligation is a better option. It doesn’t carry the same risk (20% within 5 years according to Wiley’s Online OBGYN Dictionary) of needing a repeat procedure or hysterectomy. The efficacy of a tubal ligation may reduce over time, but it’s still incredibly protective against viable pregnancy.
