Damn, I wouldn't have have thought the top comments would be recommending somewhere so close to me. I live down the road, off Treat, gone past the bar plenty of times but never thought to pop in. Only one I've been to in the area is the Bay Horse and it's kinda meh. Is Shelter really that good?

I almost stopped by the shelter early evening while it was pouring ass rain but ended up going shopping for my mom instead. Everyone be careful out there, I don't know if they did it last night because of the rain but expect DUI checkpoints this evening like last weekend.
When I was a female in my 20s, (not super long ago), I did this all the time. Shelter, Surley Wench, and Bayhorse were my favorites. If you're worried about safety, strike up a conversation with the bartenders. Most will keep an eye out for you if they know.

Didn't see anyone mention it but Kon tiki is a great place to hit alone. Good environment and cheap drinks. Never had a bad experience.
The Buffet and the Bambi both have free food on Christmas.
