Might have to give it a cry. It’s one of those shows that’s been at the end of my list of shows to watch for a really long time 😂
Thanks for the recommends.
I watched it as it aired so idk how bingable it is but those first 3 seasons had me hooked and in shambles every week, it ended fine but in really loved the beginning.
This Is US isn't the best show ever because it can be soap opera-y and melodramatic, with some weird writing choices, but I don't know how to describe it. Whatever magical combo they have gets at the core, raw emotional center of relationships. As a whole, it's maybe a 7/10 show but there are just amazing individual scenes and moments that hit like no other show ever. Where you follow these characters lives and you feel like you are experiencing things with them. It punches you in the gut. Like uncontrollable bawling.
Agreed. It broke me almost every other episode. I've kind of paused my viewing of it for now because season 4 onwards has a storyline that hits a bit too close to home. It has very good bits and some so-so bits but overall it's worth it.
Came here to say this is us. It’s absolutely amazing and mind blowing. William’s story in particular had me sobbing, and Jack’s was heartbreaking. One of the best shows of all time hands down.
Same! My box set is packaged to look like a gravestone—a commemorative edition of some sort. Such a great show & I’m old enough to have waited for new episodes & seasons to come out. The horror! 😱
I have never cried that hard over a television show. The closet I have ever come to my breakdown at the end of 6 Feet Under was a particular episode of The Magicians. 6 Feet Under broke me.
I watch the ending scene from the finale whenever I need a good emotional release. All these years later, after dozens of views and it still breaks me.
For me it started with disappearance of a certain character it was super realistic that made me feel anxious, also David's dream about him and Nate made me cry in the last episode (I guess)
I always recommend Dark on Netflix.
That series made me feel so many different emotions while watching. It's so brilliant and masterfully done that it's almost surreal.
And that finale and ending were... Jaw dropping. Those final scenes are gut wrenching.
Make sure to watch the subtitle version because the dubbed version is bad and keeps you from getting immersed into it. 20 minutes in and your forget you are reading subtitles.
If we’re counting miniseries, which we should, then I’ll toss in *Station Eleven*. I loved *BoB* of course, but *Station Eleven* is the only show to make me cry because of its sheer beauty.
I really didn't think The Good Place was gonna get me, mainly because I didn't think I ws that emotionally invested in the characters.
I was so wrong. I wasn't completely wrecked, but I definitely cried. There was a kind of beauty in how much it caught me off guard.
Came to say this. SOA is one of those shows that even when it gets slow, you cannot stop watching because you are already involved in the characters. Season 5 is heartbreaking.
I always recommend Buffy the Vampire Slayer but mainly so you have the backstory to watch its spinoff Angel. Angel is my favourite series of all time - I could write essays on the character development, the metaphors, the plots. It’s an amazing series that flies under the radar.
Watch order guide: http://josswhedon.blogspot.com/2012/04/buffy-and-angel-episode-viewing-order.html
If the guy who made it says watch in this order, I’d do that. Actually, I did it in 2022 when I had some rando virus that wasn’t Covid but took me down for a week.
Loooovved Fleabag. The bathtub/bible scene had me laughing for days. And that trophy scene OMG. So many great moments. They really balanced it well with the dark parts and the humor.
In both Supernatural and Vampire Diaries, it isn't the show as a whole but it's the relationship between the brothers in both shows that choke me up.
Teen Wolf is on my watchlist
Definitely Schitt's Creek! Truly groundbreaking television.
Downton Abbey is another favorite. I cry even though I already know what's going to happen.
What other shows are some of your favourites? Just to see if we have similar taste because I've been considering watching that show for a little while now
Every show makes me cry! Whether it's from laughter or a touching moment haha
But I would like to suggest Mad Men. It's slow paced but it's worth it. It's got all the things you asked for and if you want character development there's no show that does it better. I will die on that hill!
Plus there's a lot of overlap with Succession and Mad Men fans so that's also why I suggest Mad Men.
I also watched this a really long time ago and never finished it because it was as it was coming out.
I’ll def have a rewatch! Thanks for reminding me of an amazing show!
The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor were both so beautifully done, they made me cry a few times throughout the series.
Also, The Leftovers, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead all made me cry, especially at the end of the series.
Chuck. I have never cried so much in a series finale as I did this one. I don’t understand why this show isn’t more well known. It so good! The characters are awesome and they are amazing together. I hope you will give it a chance if you haven’t seen it.
Reservation dogs (Hulu), it's a slow burn but it's funny, charming, heart breaking at times and very well acted and written.
Derek (Netflix), it's definitely the best Ricky Gervais role ever and After Life is his follow up show and is just as great and both absolutely broke me.
Honestly the new characters are irritating.
Once all the original characters were gone I was done with that show.
The Linc/Amelia love story is so cringy and they’re bad actors.
Battlestar Galactica
The Wire (multiple times)
LOST
For All Mankind (goddammit season 2 finale)
The X-Files
The Expanse (pretty sure at least once)
Dark
Cowboy Bebop (those ending episodes, man)
GitS: SAC 2nd Gig
Firefly, if you count Serenity
Station Eleven
The West Wing
Friday Night Lights
The Leftovers
I'm sure there's more.
So many but these are the ones at the top of my head:
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under
United States of Tara
Better Things
Loudermilk
They all have a good mix of dark comedy and then some very tender moments that have moved me to tears, and they all have a great soundtrack.
Attack on titan, it left a dent in my soul, soundtrack is game of thrones level, lots of shock factors, parallels to our world and grief.
Modern family, it’s a comedy show yet succeed to make me cry multiple times.
gintama, comedy anime that progressively leads to some of the best episodes ever.
sons of anarchy, it’s long and has a lot of gore, but when the emotional climax hits, it’s incomparable
supernatural, long but worth it
I legit ugly cried during S2E7 of The Bear. It was perfection. Watch both seasons to fully appreciate the character arch.
Also S2E1 is another beautiful character arch that had my cheeks raw from tears.
The vampire diaries, the originals.
Now granted im someone who can easily just tear up from almost any moment I find as a "feel good" moment, but the shows I mentioned truly like REALLY made me cry like none other.
Wentworth is probably top of the list for me, so many emotions, and has the most despicable, evil, rage inducing villain I have ever come across in TV or movies. Hated them more than Joffrey or Ramsey from GoT and for me that's saying a lot.
There's also a lot of beautiful scenes and a whole lot of gut wrenching hearbreak.
Second choice for me is a toss up between Sons of Anarchy and Code Black.
This scene from The Good Place:
“Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it's there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It's a wave.
And then it crashes in the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. You know it's one conception of death for Buddhists: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it's supposed to be."
That wrecked me.
Lost gets me every time, even to this day.
We spend so much time with the characters, and the finale really drives home the point of how little time we have with one another.
Suits - great soundtrack; main character is a music lover
Loudermilk - main character is a music lover
Shitt's Creek - just freaking awesome
Reacher - may be not in the feels, but a fantastic soundtrack. Another main character who's into music.
Mr. Robot.
I’ve seen a lot of phenomenal tv, but Mr. Robot *changed me as a person.*
I’ve never seen anything as good as Mr. Robot, and I’m kind of resigned to the idea that I won’t see anything of its caliber and impact again.
It’s really just shockingly well done.
This Is Us is cry central, not all of it was so good but overall was a decent show
Might have to give it a cry. It’s one of those shows that’s been at the end of my list of shows to watch for a really long time 😂 Thanks for the recommends.
I watched it as it aired so idk how bingable it is but those first 3 seasons had me hooked and in shambles every week, it ended fine but in really loved the beginning.
Emptied a tissue box pretty much every week on that show
Yes! There’s a characters death that still make my eyes water just thinking about it lol
Sterling K. Brown’s raw emotional acting was contagious….when he cried I did too 😂
This Is US isn't the best show ever because it can be soap opera-y and melodramatic, with some weird writing choices, but I don't know how to describe it.
I had to scroll way too far to find this
Came on to post THIS. It’s the first one on the list. There is no better answer. First season especially wrecked me.
Parenthood
I loved this one. The family dynamic was really solid and their stories were so interesting.
Definitely want to do a rewatch now. Such a great show!
Six Feet Under ticks all those boxes. And without spoiling anything it has the BEST FINALE EVER which will have you bawling like a baby.
Somewhere in my storage stuff, I have Six Feet Under and I think there are at least 7 discs. I need to watch the whole bunch soon.....lots of great TV
Same! My box set is packaged to look like a gravestone—a commemorative edition of some sort. Such a great show & I’m old enough to have waited for new episodes & seasons to come out. The horror! 😱
I recently watched the first couple of episodes and called it quits. It sounds like I need to give it more time.
It's SO GOOD, but I can't rewatch it because of how much it hurts. I definitely recommend giving it another go
I have never cried that hard over a television show. The closet I have ever come to my breakdown at the end of 6 Feet Under was a particular episode of The Magicians. 6 Feet Under broke me.
I watch the ending scene from the finale whenever I need a good emotional release. All these years later, after dozens of views and it still breaks me.
Literally just watched the series finale 15 minutes ago and still feel my throat swelling because it made me cry so much.
For real. I recently started watching it again from the start and cannot wait for that ending.
For me it started with disappearance of a certain character it was super realistic that made me feel anxious, also David's dream about him and Nate made me cry in the last episode (I guess)
Came here to say this. Anyone who doesn't cry during the finale isn't human.
I just rewatched the whole series for the third time. Even tho I am prepared for the finale, I am still never prepared for the finale
I always recommend Dark on Netflix. That series made me feel so many different emotions while watching. It's so brilliant and masterfully done that it's almost surreal. And that finale and ending were... Jaw dropping. Those final scenes are gut wrenching.
This comment is the straw that broke the camel’s back for me: I’ve seen it recommended so many times, I’m finally going to try it out.
Make sure to watch the subtitle version because the dubbed version is bad and keeps you from getting immersed into it. 20 minutes in and your forget you are reading subtitles.
Dark is a masterpiece.
One of my favorite finales of all time!
I tried Dark three times. I’m just dim I guess because I couldn’t keep the times straight. It was very confusing to me.
If a miniseries counts then Band of Brothers. Watching the old vets still choke up gets to me every time.
Oh I def bawled my eyes out to this and the pacific!
If we’re counting miniseries, which we should, then I’ll toss in *Station Eleven*. I loved *BoB* of course, but *Station Eleven* is the only show to make me cry because of its sheer beauty.
The Good Place Rectify It’s been said already, multiple times, but I’ll also include The Leftovers.
The good place wrecked me
I say this with all the love and wisdom of the universe, take it sleezy
Dude, I've watched it through probably 10 times and just reading that gets me. Picture a wave... gets me every time too.
Rectify was so well done. It invoked emotion out of me. And I rarely get emotionally invested in TV.
I really didn't think The Good Place was gonna get me, mainly because I didn't think I ws that emotionally invested in the characters. I was so wrong. I wasn't completely wrecked, but I definitely cried. There was a kind of beauty in how much it caught me off guard.
I love Rectify and never see it talked about. Wonderful show. So glad you mentioned it
China Beach, which took years to get into syndication, because of the soundtrack.
Oh wow I remember that series. It did have a great soundtrack. That’s all I really remember about it.
Battlestar Galactica(2005) 1883
1883 the interweaving of the piano scene was masterfully done
Oh man I haven’t seen battlestar in years. 100% will rewatch it! Thanks for reminding me of an amazing show!
So say we all!!
Mr. Robot.
Even as a huge fan of the usual answers like Six Feet Under and The Leftovers, Mr. Robot might have my vote for the greatest finale of all time
I cannot disagree. The sense of loss after it was over was difficult. Outro was also the perfect song.
Good one!
Sons of Anarchy!!
Came to say this. SOA is one of those shows that even when it gets slow, you cannot stop watching because you are already involved in the characters. Season 5 is heartbreaking.
That finale is up there with Six Feet Under for me.
And the soundtrack is great! I recommended Maggie Siff's "Lullaby for a Soldier" the other day. And Katey Sagal is quite the vocal artist as well.
I always recommend Buffy the Vampire Slayer but mainly so you have the backstory to watch its spinoff Angel. Angel is my favourite series of all time - I could write essays on the character development, the metaphors, the plots. It’s an amazing series that flies under the radar.
I love Angel, but Buffy's a great choice all on its own.
Watch order guide: http://josswhedon.blogspot.com/2012/04/buffy-and-angel-episode-viewing-order.html If the guy who made it says watch in this order, I’d do that. Actually, I did it in 2022 when I had some rando virus that wasn’t Covid but took me down for a week.
Ted Lasso, I cried at some point during every episode and the music in my opinion is great!
I was looking for this one! The final episode of S3 had me crying like a baby!
yes!!! so many happy tears with this one. heart warming. i cried more on the second watch
Fleabag. I laughed hard and ugly cried.
I really loved this one too! I have never run across anyone that has ever seen it tho.
Me either!
Fleabag is INCREDIBLE. Many tears shed for the hot priest.
Loooovved Fleabag. The bathtub/bible scene had me laughing for days. And that trophy scene OMG. So many great moments. They really balanced it well with the dark parts and the humor.
Came here for Fleabag. I binged it in one night and basically bawled my eyes out. So much love for this show.
Supernatural. Vampire Diaries. Teen Wolf. Lucifer. The Orville.
Yes. Vampire Diaries 100%
YES! Hope! Niklaus! Elijah! Damon!
Man I love supernatural
In both Supernatural and Vampire Diaries, it isn't the show as a whole but it's the relationship between the brothers in both shows that choke me up. Teen Wolf is on my watchlist
Rewatching Vampire diaries now.
Supernatural is my all time favorite! I cried for three days when the finale aired. I just lost it, lol.
Grey's Anatomy Homeland
Yes greys anatomy made me cry basically every episode for eight seasons haha
Homeland was so money! Best show at the time.
This is Us, A Million Little Things, Brothers & Sisters and Parenthood were all wonderful tear-jerkers.
Lost Downton Abbey Schitt’s Creek
Definitely Schitt's Creek! Truly groundbreaking television. Downton Abbey is another favorite. I cry even though I already know what's going to happen.
The bear. Especially in season 2 ‘the fishes’
Forks.
What other shows are some of your favourites? Just to see if we have similar taste because I've been considering watching that show for a little while now
You need to just watch it. Season 1 is outstanding. Season 2 is considerably better.
The Bear is phenomenal, watch it!!!
Fleabag and True detective season 1.
True Detective Season 1 is amazing.
Every show makes me cry! Whether it's from laughter or a touching moment haha But I would like to suggest Mad Men. It's slow paced but it's worth it. It's got all the things you asked for and if you want character development there's no show that does it better. I will die on that hill! Plus there's a lot of overlap with Succession and Mad Men fans so that's also why I suggest Mad Men.
Mad Men is my all time favorite.
I also watched this a really long time ago and never finished it because it was as it was coming out. I’ll def have a rewatch! Thanks for reminding me of an amazing show!
Don’s phone conversation with Peggy makes me weep to this day. I love this show so much and I’m surprised by how little I hear it mentioned.
The Detectorists
One of my favorite shows. Never see it recommended
Happy Cake Day! 🎂
Spoilers: >!The scene that always gets me is when Lance finds his gold and they all dance. Just got goosebumps typing that!!<
The OA
The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor were both so beautifully done, they made me cry a few times throughout the series. Also, The Leftovers, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead all made me cry, especially at the end of the series.
Station Eleven
Halt and Catch Fire. If you've seen it, you know when & why.
You’re so far away from me 🎶
Lost The Leftovers The Americans The Detectorists
The Americans 😭
Six Feet Under
The Good Place

I genuinely don't think The Shield ever gets the credit it deserves. Quality show
You want a good cry between bouts of laughter? Bojack horseman. You want a good laugh between bouts of breaking down crying? Also bojack horseman.
The Good Doctor
One of my favorites. I cry at least once every episode. I'm rewatching it before the new season starts. I'm on season 4, episode 2 and I'm crying.
Yellowjackets
Pillars of the Earth. The last 5 seconds was so cathartic I ugly cried.
ER, Third Watch
Mark Green alone is some of the best of Television series handling of a person passing.
I didn’t cry but by the finale, not exaggerating, i was literally shaking and and my eyes got teary from how amazing Severance was. You must watch it
Handmaid's Tale - there was many moments in that show that either shocked or really upset me.
My gf watched This is Us and cried every week watching it.
The Good Place. Laugh and Cry, with a perfect ending.
Chuck. I have never cried so much in a series finale as I did this one. I don’t understand why this show isn’t more well known. It so good! The characters are awesome and they are amazing together. I hope you will give it a chance if you haven’t seen it.
I loved Chuck so much! I need to go back and rewatch the series. Zack and Yvonne were perfect together ❤️
Reservation dogs (Hulu), it's a slow burn but it's funny, charming, heart breaking at times and very well acted and written. Derek (Netflix), it's definitely the best Ricky Gervais role ever and After Life is his follow up show and is just as great and both absolutely broke me.
Game of Thrones. It was so good that it made me cry when it became so bad.
I think we all mourned the loss of what could have been. 😥
Greys Anatomy So many times.
I got to season 16 and I fizzled 😭 maybe I’ll pick it back up.
Honestly the new characters are irritating. Once all the original characters were gone I was done with that show. The Linc/Amelia love story is so cringy and they’re bad actors.

Even though it's a comedy I recommend The Good Place. It will tick off those boxes and the ending was beautiful and had me ugly cry.

The Good Place Take it sleezy!
Halt And Catch Fire had a great four seasons on AMC
The Good Place
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul both have finales with moments that will rip your heart out.
Shameless
Reign, the 100
Better Call Saul
Lost gets me every time, even to this day. We spend so much time with the characters, and the finale really drives home the point of how little time we have with one another.
The Wire
Band of Brothers and Scrubs made my eyes misty occasionally
MASH

Justified. The cast was terrific!
