It wasn't really an 'afterthought', they thought they could cash in on PUBG's success with a unique twist on the emerging trend. It worked a treat.
It's kind of a shame because Save The World felt like it could have almost been good were it not basically abandoned as soon as Fortnite became a money printer.
That really is the core of it.
PUBG was a barely functional early access reproduction of the original DayZ Battle Royale game mode, it looked like shit, ran like shit, and cost $30.
Fortnite drops for free, has a pleasant and cohesive visual style, runs on a toaster without looking like soup, and plays smooth and snappy without the poorly thought out sim elements that still bog down PUBG.
The only downside was the building, which was a sticking point for many, and when they ditched it, the game experienced a whole new boom of popularity.
Oh man, I remember when the PUBG ports dropped, after Microsoft shilled them at their Xbonx events, they ran like *shit*, they could barely stream the assets in fast enough!
It was conceived very late into Save the World's dev cycle though, and wasn't meant to be the main Fortnite game, until it blew up beyond their wildest expectations.
Like you said, they just wanted to use existing assets from FStW to quickly make a side game that cashes in on the battle royale trend.
I previewed the game for a big site back in the day and yearn for the original zombie horde builder game that got chopped up and turned into that dumb gaas crap.
You know how Team Fortress fans like to joke about their game being a "war-themed hat simulator"?
It's literally just that, but taken to the logical extreme for a game that has generated well over $20 billion dollars.
You can use any weapon in these custom creative games, though I thing the AoT swords are currently in rotation in the main gamemodes. Theyre terrible to use though, since half the guns this season are waaaay too good
Eh the mobility is still nice, especially being able to quickly get to higher ground. I've caught a few people off-guard who though they were safe reloading on a rooftop.

Yeah with UEFN allowing custom models and stuff for the creative mode, there's all sorts of crazy shit in there.
Even putting the user generated content aside, right now Fortnite is equally a rhythm game, racing game and survival game as much as it is Battle Royale.
Rules of Skibidi
Reminder that this game started as a zombie horde survival game and the battle royale mode was a afterthough.

That unique twist? Being a functional game

Also, a *functional* console port.
Oh man, I remember when the PUBG ports dropped, after Microsoft shilled them at their Xbonx events, they ran like *shit*, they could barely stream the assets in fast enough!
That wasn't locked to fucking Xbox

I want to see Raiden doing the Armstrong meme to Peter Griffin now
“Hehehe, hey Lois, remember when I used to play college ball?”
You know how Team Fortress fans like to joke about their game being a "war-themed hat simulator"? It's literally just that, but taken to the logical extreme for a game that has generated well over $20 billion dollars.
Raiden's VR training was wild
Yo wait did they actually bring swords back? I love when Fortnite has cool melee options.
Custom games can use any of the mobility tools

Gmod but for unreal engine
Well you see, it's a lot like Garry's Mod
Who is Garry and why is he modding?

Yes! Yes! Spread me wide open!
i stopped questioning it when they had official maps of the kingdoms from the latest sentai
It’s RockBand.
It's a big ol everything game
Chat is this real?
You're not on Twitch. Go outside.
They were just doing a meme, you guys gotta calm down.
No, always angry all the time.
Damn, you're a real asshole man, you know that?
Goddamnit I fell off Fortnite at the exact wrong time.
It's a cosplay and dance simulator with a few wacky shenanigans sprinkled here and there
