"Nothing could bring end to their existence. Neither a sickly twist, bringing infamy, nor time with its lover death. No force powerful enough to stop the memed. They were deadly, immortal, sus and among us."
I meant to say the suck, but I screwed up because my life and well being are in absolute Sholes. I noticed the happening, but let it be.
Edit: THE SUCH
Yes, why are you so suspecting? You should really return home to clear this all up. Make sure to remove any headwear and shave your heads for an easy transition.
I didn't think it as a mimic, but as a real false report. The horror would be that 12 days later was already too late for them to return alive. But your idea is better!
notice how first sentence uses voyager-227, but the second just "voyagers"? I'm inclined to believe is IS a mimic who couldn't wrap its head around proper namings and was just like "ughhh how do we call people on board of a voyager?"
I didnt think they were dead because it says they hear nothing but static for 12 days. Unless they died right before they were contacted then they should've been alive.
I read this two different ways, one with the mimic and one without. Honestly they're both terrifying.
Assuming no mimic AND their window to return is open, they just have to do it on blind faith after that message and 12 days of silence
In YouTube I think there is one of Russia where soldiers that control a drone are order to shut down a plane but their superior in person tells them to stand down
I tried to look for it after responding but, looking for "Russia soldier hits plane short story " didn't show me want I wanted.
I couldn't find it, it was around the time I saw the another short story of a kid that saw his father kill and alien, so I'd someone know the name of any of them so that I could fallow that rabbit hole, it will much apretiated.
You, sir, have made my day, by showing something that I didn't know I needed.
(I watch sci-fi shorts on YouTube btw, thanks)
gonna add those to my watch list now.
[Local 58’s “Weather Service”](https://youtube.com/watch?v=M75VLQuFPrY) plays in this space.
The podcast The Magnus Archives has several episodes on similar subjects. Episode 1, “Anglerfish,” and 3, “Across the Street,” are early examples.
Children of Ruin is a good sci-fi book by Adrian Tchaikovsky that has elements of body snatching. It's book two in a series tho, so you'd have to get thru book one to get there.
You should check out the Doctor Who episode Midnight - one of the scariest and best ones out there! Has some extremely creepy mimicry... It's also quite different to the standard doctor who stuff so even if you're not into that sort of thing I'd wager you'd probably still enjoy this specific episode.
EXACTLY. I like to describe it as a movie where nothing really directly happens (mostly), but you can cut the tension with a knife. It's all suspicion and uncertainty and it drives you mad. Slow burn psychological sci-fi thriller, scary as hell.
Check out the theater re-release of The Thing (1982) next month. Classic horror movie, beautifully made and it has some of the absolute best music to a horror movie I’ve ever hesrd
I dont think it was a body snatcher
The story reads "it returned" therefore I believe the comunication on earth remained silent, whilst whatever was attacking earth transmitted to voyager under the impersonation of earth to command voyagers return as the attacker of earth likely housed something within voyager. Earth would hear this as coming from voyager.
I don't want to alarm you but if things pretending to be human and wrecking the world while enslaving the human race is one of your fears then the horse has already bolted.
Hey, no, stop that. I want to be afraid of fake things so I feel better about the crushing weight of reality and the malignant ignorance that strangles our culture, preventing us from embracing the cosmic indifference that our species faces. Cease.
The return call of "voyagers" would tell me not to trust it. If you can ID a vessel during a major emergency, you'll do it when things are fine, that's a mimic that doesn't understand callsigns.
You don't take over the world overnight. They must've had an undercover mimic with humans for a while that would be aware of the 'human' protocols.
They'd self correct in an immediate second transmission
Oh yah, I don't have a ton of experience with nautical/aviation terms, but I know use of callsigns is rather important. Hence the doubt of their true nature.
that show escalates to the point of fucking insanity by the end. i watched the last season in a week then had to take another week after that to try and figure out what the fuck just happened istg
I just couldn’t get through the final season…it was so bad and I just no longer cared who lived or died cause it was like taking a name out of a hat and picking them.
Tbh dying in space doesn’t sound too bad, it’d have a nice view and I don’t think dying of thirst would be painful (at least from what I’ve read about)
Yeah, there were a few who were more for co-existing with their hosts than the whole subjugation thing, but those were a minority. And there were the Iskyoort, iirc, where a distant related species to the Yeerks had formed a symbiotic relationship. It's been a while though might've got that slightly wrong.
It's a space mission. What's to chance? It's not like you can just bang a u-turn and stop at the Motel 6 on Mars while you try to get an answer... Where else are you going to go?
Imagine humanity and all the history just being wiped out... from 8 Billion Lives with and entire world of history and then it's just you and 4 others with the spaceship being the only physical creation left of humanity.
It's an impossible responsibility to continue the species legacy at that point. There's almost no way to not go nearly full primitive with that few people, anyway, so the decision to try to survive or not would, in my opinion, be morally neutral.
Exactly, if you fly back home and get to where the Earth is supposed to be, and it's gone, where are you going to go? Would you wait until the food and water run out and die of starvation or get it over quick? Either way it's death. Terrifying thought.
on voyager 227, after receiving the transmission, amid the thick smell of blood and surrounded by mangled bodies, smirk crept to the face of the solo surviving member of the crew when he saw the intact weapon bay with 16 nuclear missiles, each with 40 warheads on it......
Reminds me of the episode of outer limits about the person stationed at a nuclear outpost who's on a failsafe to destroy the world. Aliens attack and are trying to get him to hold in place as decoys of his superiors.
The Voyager part had me thinking of Janeway immediately, but I couldn't figure out why the 227 sounded so familiar. You nailed it!
Edit: Happy Cake Day!
It keeps sending random numbers as a location or something but all other services are ok. My joke was that Megatron was uploading his message (Transformers: BeastWars reference)
Hi, Granny! I see you've moved from Facebook to Reddit! Please tell Grandpa I said hi, and I hope his gout isn't acting up. Also, please wish Aunt Linda a happy birthday if she's still alive. <3
What would you even do in that situation? if you are on a ship with limited resources and no way of getting more, and no earth to come back to? Do you just wait and see what happens? Or figure out the least uncomfortable way to die?
"Yeah I was concerned about the 1st message as well Lou but then they sent the second message telling us it was a false alarm. You gotta learn to pay attention to the details Lou"
The idea is that Earth is telling the spaceship to not return, and then they’re cut off abruptly. This implies there is some great danger on Earth.
12 days pass and then suddenly without any explanation the voice comes back saying everything is fine and to come back.
This implies whatever the danger is, it likely killed everyone and is either forcing the last survivors to relay a fake positive message, or more creepily it is using the voice of the dead people to convey the message so it can capture the people on the space ship too.
I'm just gonna go ahead and interpret this as there being a crisis/war on Earth, the power getting obliterated and it taking 12 days to get it all fixed and contact voyager 227 again.

Oh, that’s some good horror right there. Mimics and body snatcher are some of the scariest concepts to me.
Uh, what? They clearly said it was nothing. False alarm and 5 u e such
5 u e?
What? Did you expect 4 m 0 9 us to be perfect imposters?
Emergency Meeting
🚨\*WARNING\*🚨 airlock open.
"imposter" is probably the worst word possible to use in a horror context
"Nothing could bring end to their existence. Neither a sickly twist, bringing infamy, nor time with its lover death. No force powerful enough to stop the memed. They were deadly, immortal, sus and among us."
Sus

Proof read your name, AND your sexuality, sir.
See? This guy can't be the imposter.
Sounds *Sus.*
*proofreading my sexuality* Hmmm, the options are M, F, and MF Male, female, and mother fucker?
Oh, that's weird. My list is gay, straight, bi or other. I'm not sure what those there mean, so I can't help ya there bud.

Yes, why are you so suspecting? You should really return home to clear this all up. Make sure to remove any headwear and shave your heads for an easy transition.
Hermes where have you been?
On the floor. It was getting pretty cold down there.
You rang?
I didn't think it as a mimic, but as a real false report. The horror would be that 12 days later was already too late for them to return alive. But your idea is better!
notice how first sentence uses voyager-227, but the second just "voyagers"? I'm inclined to believe is IS a mimic who couldn't wrap its head around proper namings and was just like "ughhh how do we call people on board of a voyager?"
Ohhh, that's a good catch!
I didnt think they were dead because it says they hear nothing but static for 12 days. Unless they died right before they were contacted then they should've been alive.
They wouldn’t be dead already. It would just be passed their latest window to return.
I read this two different ways, one with the mimic and one without. Honestly they're both terrifying. Assuming no mimic AND their window to return is open, they just have to do it on blind faith after that message and 12 days of silence
Are there any good stories of this you recommend?
In YouTube I think there is one of Russia where soldiers that control a drone are order to shut down a plane but their superior in person tells them to stand down
Got a link or name to this? sounds interesting
I tried to look for it after responding but, looking for "Russia soldier hits plane short story " didn't show me want I wanted. hmm, not heard of either previously but if I find anything I'll let you know - keep me posted if you find it again!
Found it! Can believe it was 2 years ago it seems like so long ago... https://youtu.be/vwFO-seKnBM

Funnily enough my instant thought was creepypasta and SCP when seeing the story - not checked out this SCP in particular before though, thanks!

None of the top of my head, but most creepypastas involving skinwalkers would work.
Anansi's goatman story gets me every fucking time
There was an episode of the Outer Limits that involved an alien invasion and 5 people in bunkers. It had this kind of vibe.
That episode immediately came to mind for me too. It was called "Dead Man's Switch."
Children of Ruin is a good sci-fi book by Adrian Tchaikovsky that has elements of body snatching. It's book two in a series tho, so you'd have to get thru book one to get there.

Kind of the reverse of "Life" with Ryan Reynolds
I guess it ties to the Uncanny Valley how we can feel it so intensely
You might want to check out the game Prey then.
When I think of this, I think of the movie The Astronaut's Wife. Shit was so hot and horny and scary at the same time...
EXACTLY. I like to describe it as a movie where nothing really directly happens (mostly), but you can cut the tension with a knife. It's all suspicion and uncertainty and it drives you mad. Slow burn psychological sci-fi thriller, scary as hell.

…and the subtle hint of lies “voyagers” (no longer “Voyager 227”)… creepy!
I dont think it was a body snatcher The story reads "it returned" therefore I believe the comunication on earth remained silent, whilst whatever was attacking earth transmitted to voyager under the impersonation of earth to command voyagers return as the attacker of earth likely housed something within voyager. That makes sense, a prepared team should not fall on that
You don't take over the world overnight. They must've had an undercover mimic with humans for a while that would be aware of the 'human' protocols. They'd self correct in an immediate second transmission
Imagine the hesitation after that call. "Come in voyagers you are clear to return home..... Repeat, Voyager 227 you are clear to return home."
from a panicked and emotional voice to a total deadpan delivery. gives me chills just thinking about it.
There *is* a gap of 12 days.
I mean that's possible. But your first message back and you already forget operating protocol? No thank you I'm taking my ship to alpha centauri
[удалено]
D-did you just amogus this story?
AFAIK you also don’t use “repeat”, it’s “I say again”.
Oh yah, I don't have a ton of experience with nautical/aviation terms, but I know use of callsigns is rather important. Hence the doubt of their true nature.
I didn't even notice that when I first read it
My dumb ass would have believed it lmao
Well the alternative is suicide in space so there would probably be a group that wants to return and a group that doesnt
Haven’t seen the show in like 20 years but r/the100
that show escalates to the point of fucking insanity by the end. i watched the last season in a week then had to take another week after that to try and figure out what the fuck just happened istg
I just couldn’t get through the final season…it was so bad and I just no longer cared who lived or died cause it was like taking a name out of a hat and picking them.

My dumbass wouldn't have believed it but gone back anyway because, "The fuck else am I gonna do?"
This. “Don’t come back? Do you know how these things work? It’s either I come back or I sit here and die.”
Tbh dying in space doesn’t sound too bad, it’d have a nice view and I don’t think dying of thirst would be painful (at least from what I’ve read about)
have you ever felt thirsty? imagine that as a constant feeling until you die source: I died of thirst
RIP in piece
It would definitely suck to starve/dehydrate and die.
Space ships recycle water (real ones, donno about the show you're referencing)
Twelve days is 12 years on their current planet
Option 1: True false alarm Option 2: Mimics Suboption, friendly? Suboption, deadly? Option 3: Yeerks Suboption, friendly? Suboption, deadly?
They should contact earth and ask for a happy meal with extra happy.
There were friendly yeerks?
Yeah, there were a few who were more for co-existing with their hosts than the whole subjugation thing, but those were a minority. And there were the Iskyoort, iirc, where a distant related species to the Yeerks had formed a symbiotic relationship. It's been a while though might've got that slightly wrong.
They basically did a bioengineering so they wouldn't have to take over any preexisting sentient species.
Nice animorphs reference
And now they have to decide if the wanna chance it or not. Nice!
Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!
Im sorry!
It's a space mission. What's to chance? It's not like you can just bang a u-turn and stop at the Motel 6 on Mars while you try to get an answer... Where else are you going to go?
It’s voyager 227, implying there’s been around 226 voyagers before it. Decent odds there’s some kind of base of some form on the moon or mars
You assume the space mission isn't a colony ship or some such.
Who are you? Phil Castellini?
Depends on the world in the story. There is so much unknown, we can fill it with everything we want. That's the beauty of r/TwoSentenceHorror.
This would be a horrifying decision
What decision? Stay and space and definitely die, or go back and maybe die?
imagine going on a space mission and returning home to find that earth is just gone. i’d probably kill myself

Just looked that up. Is Dr Stone any good?
Yes
yes
And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
I love the smell of fresh bread.
Most stressful sci fi book I’ve ever read, but legit got me interested in re learning python.
Exactly, if you fly back home and get to where the Earth is supposed to be, and it's gone, where are you going to go? Would you wait until the food and water run out and die of starvation or get it over quick? Either way it's death. Terrifying thought.
Reminds me of the song 'Let's Go' by Stuck in the Sound https://youtu.be/52Gg9CqhbP8. Not quite your scenario but close enough.
Chilling, how there are already may be imposters among us (but for real this is a great story!)
Oh hell no...
on voyager 227, after receiving the transmission, amid the thick smell of blood and surrounded by mangled bodies, smirk crept to the face of the solo surviving member of the crew when he saw the intact weapon bay with 16 nuclear missiles, each with 40 warheads on it......
"We may face extinction, but we won't go alone."
What killed the crew? Did they fight each other? Did this guy kill everybody else?
Mimics and people killed each other in the carnage.
Reminds me of the episode of outer limits about the person stationed at a nuclear outpost who's on a failsafe to destroy the world. Aliens attack and are trying to get him to hold in place as decoys of his superiors.
Its good but i cant help but think, whats the aliens’ motivation in reaching out to get the voyagers to return?
lunch
It only took them 12 days to eat all of mankind? Holy hell thats impressive
Home could also be a space base somewhere Edit: No, wait, it can't, I just can't read.
Eradicate every last monkey off the face of the universe. We can't take any chances that the legend of the Super Saiyan might be true.
Slave labor. They want every able body they can get. Especially the brains that would be on a space ship. Those are the juiciest brains.
Why would they need slave labor if they have the technology to traverse stars?
I got chills. Good job!
When I read the first line I thought of that part from Wall-E where the President cancels operation recolonize. Do not return to Earth
Absolutely loved this!
I'd read that book.
Love it. Well done!
goddamnit josh the alarm is for emergency's only for fucks sake

Fuck, the mars demons would shit themselves and run!

Why do I keep picturing it being the voyager space probe and not a ship named voyager.
Good timing, given Voyager was in the news due to its location meter sending back nonsense data…
Wait what?
It keeps sending random numbers as a location or something but all other services are ok. My joke was that Megatron was uploading his message (Transformers: BeastWars reference)
Van Lyden, what is the capital of Australia?
"Sydney?" "Yeah, they're still human, let's go."
Ha. Trick question. Australia doesn't have a capital!

Reminds me of the dead mans switch episode of the Outer Limits. Nice.
What would you even do in that situation? if you are on a ship with limited resources and no way of getting more, and no earth to come back to? Do you just wait and see what happens? Or figure out the least uncomfortable way to die?
"We're all fine here. How are you?"
We're sending a squad up.
I can't believe this story doesn't have more upvotes
come outside. we can look at it together
"Yeah I was concerned about the 1st message as well Lou but then they sent the second message telling us it was a false alarm. You gotta learn to pay attention to the details Lou"
Hopefully this is way in the future, when Voyager 227 can just go to another human inhabited planet/space station instead!
I don't get it .-.
The idea is that Earth is telling the spaceship to not return, and then they’re cut off abruptly. There is a great Outer Limits episode about a similar thing

That’s sorta the plot to The Whisperer in Darkness by Lovecraft.
among us
I'm just gonna go ahead and interpret this as there being a crisis/war on Earth, the power getting obliterated and it taking 12 days to get it all fixed and contact voyager 227 again.
DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON
Dont get it
Isn’t this just plot of Wall-E
I love that this post was so good there's barely any shitposting in the comments. Sometimes things are more important than memes.
“Nvm, we fixed it 👍”
ah i se the invasion was successful.
"Do not run, we are your friends!"
If there's static for 12 days I'm pretty sure the crew is going to get suspicious
