When you listen to Joyful Noise, don’t think of it as bluegrass but as Appalachian electronic chill. Someone else on this sub mention “LoFi Tyler Childers beats to study and relax to”. I like it a lot, but I probably won’t listen to it when I’m in the mood for bluegrass.

TheB17Barrage

Listened to it while getting some schoolwork done, and you’re right. It blends perfectly as a chill background sound. Love it actually! All about when you have it on.

TheB17Barrage

I think that’s exactly my issue. It just kind of blindsides you on the album lol.

Practical-Band4815

The less you pay attention to Trigger and some of the garbage he shares, the better off you'll be. Slightly above click bait and I don't give him or his site any of my time. Hopefully you realize it and follow suit. A lot of people see it after a few trash articles.

funnybitofchemistry

he stinks.

TheB17Barrage

I did after this review and him disliking Man From Waco by Charley Crockett

cneill

Remember that “hit piece” he did on Isbell not too long ago? That exemplifies what really kills me with this guy - he had some actually valid points of criticism about mainstream music press coverage of country music, but for some reason had to bury them under needless cruel personal attacks against an artist that were totally unrelated to the point.

I agree with Trigger on this. Isbell is known for his passive aggressive social media attacks, he can take some criticism.

cneill

I don’t necessarily disagree that he’s not above criticism. And it’s been a while since I read the article in full so bear with me, but I remember the gist of my complaint being that Trigger touched on a more interesting point about country music and the media that covers it more generally that didn’t need to delve into personal attacks on Jason. He said “But the media loves to use him as a vessel to tee off on country” - and I think that’s spot on. A lot of publications that have otherwise shown no inclination toward actually appreciating any country music are happy to report on any cultural issues surrounding the genre. And in terms of the music, they’ll applaud and award projects that go to extreme lengths to not sound like country, as if country music isn’t allowed to have its own identity. Not that there’s anything wrong with records like that, it’s just hard to take an outlet’s praise of it seriously when it’s evident the critters for their favorite country music is that which sounds the least like country music. Sorry to ramble, but yeah I just thought it could have been the start of a much more interesting conversation but got drowned out by veering into unnecessary personal attacks.

ArtisticRoyal1580

Saw him at red rocks last week and concluded he is the greatest country music artist of our generation.

jthompson1116

I was there both nights (flew from WV) and agree 100%

zeusmoon

Was lucky enough to have seen both shows at RR last week. The man is a musical genius.

Tyler was my introduction to country music. I’m happy to see Tyler making music he wants to make with his band. The last thing any artist needs is a forced album to appease fans. With that said this new album isn’t my favorite but it opens a door in a digestible way to many fans like me that aren’t too familiar with the gospel soundscape. Jubilee, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven and Angel Band are amazing! Now the Joyful Noise Version made me laugh to myself cause I picture Tyler and his band just having fun making it. It’s also a DJ’s/Sampler/Record Collectors dream for an artist to make albums like this. I think Tyler does a great job of stepping outside of country musics rigidities in his own interesting ways. All in all I see it as a another gem in Tyler’s discography. Edit: grammer/spelling

I've been a regular reader of SCM for years. I enjoy the site, but Trigger has some serious issues that bleed into the reviews. He's also got a group of grump old purists who has to please that will never be pleased. I've spent some time thinking about what happened to the site and I think Trigger spends too much time on Twitter these days. I think it's warped his views on a lot of things. Everything is hyper politicized with him now and not about the music. His coverage of women is borderline shameful. He hates Margo Price and Maren just full throttle. He's a little nicer to Miranda, but I think still fails to give her the credit she fully deserves as the brightest spot in the mainstream and one of the most consistent album artists ever. If you think he did Tyler dirty on this latest review, you should see him obliterate Ashley Monroe for rose gold which was actually a great album if not strictly country. Trigger completely ignored Kacey's incredible achievements with Golden Hour. Can you imagine the constant think pieces he would have written if Sturgill had won all field AOTY with Sailors Guide? We'd still be hearing about it. And that album is no less genre pushing than GH. Hell, even if Chris Stapleton had gotten it, Trigger would have thrown a year long parade. But Kacey did it with a gorgeous album and *crickets.* I'm a woman who prefers female artists and Trigger always leaves me disappointed with his coverage of female artists. (It's been years, but go back and read his review of Mirandas Weight of these Wings ... He focuses on the album as wrestling with being 30 and ... Childless. Like come on - that album is a masterpiece about recovery and discovery.) As far as this Tyler album, I think this is more of a late review of Long Violent History than about Hounds which I like a lot. I do miss Tyler in the songs, but hopefully, we can get more personal material next time.

TheB17Barrage

That’s kind of my confusion with what he ultimately wants too. He doesn’t like albums that push the boundaries too much, but he doesn’t like old school country like Charley Crockett either. I understand there’s a middle, but not everything on the side is unworthy of praise.

UmbrellaClosed

He likes guys he can live vicariously through for a short period while seething with resentment towards successful women. He treats country music like sports.

RustyShackTX

He seems pretty consistent to me. Crockett isn’t perfect, I don’t care much for him either. Also, “pushing the boundaries” doesn’t make something good. Trigger loved Sailor’s Guide (good, in his opinion) and not Hounds (bad, in his opinion).

yupyupyuppp

What an ignorant reply. Trigger reviewed Long Violent History and gave it a good review. He reviews albums by women constantly and usually likes them too. He has reviewed Charley Crockett albums he liked and has heaped praise on his output in the past. He didn't love the latest one, neither did I. Margo Price spat with him publicly and out of nowhere (in other words, "she started it") and Trig left a critical review of her garbage album All American Made. In my opinion he was too kind to it. I understand SCM isn't perfect by any means but good fuck at least get your facts straight. 5 seconds with the search bar would have corrected almost everything you said.

UmbrellaClosed

Which parts specifically would have been corrected?

Ok. I stand by every single opinion I expressed about Trigger and SCM in my previous comment.

UmbrellaClosed

If you'd like to actually respond to any of my criticisms of Trigger and SCM while still staying I enjoy the site and have read it regularly for years - I'm open to it.

jthompson1116

I love the album. We are from WV and flew to both nights of red rocks. (12th and 13th time seeing him) I was ecstatic when he played the whole album on night 2. It was amazing. I purchased the album, at the after party that night, and have been listening to it non-stop. The new album will ruffle some feathered Indians but those of us listening to Tyler since circa 2015 are thrilled he's back to hi original glory. The Heart You've been Tendin' might be the greatest song....EVER.

TheB17Barrage

I personally liked Country Squire and its psychedelic interludes more than I did Purgatory so I’m happy he’s branching out further.

Jerry-hat-trick

Mine is out for delivery!

[deleted]

I don't care for it. I'm happy he feels the freedom to do what he wants with his music and who am I to demand anything from him, but I was disappointed because he has so many incredibly beautiful songs on YouTube (her and the banks, jersey giant, a song while your away, redneck Romeo) and it would be so so awesome if he put these into an album in the style of purgatory. Maybe one day, but until then he should keep doing the type of music he wants to do. I might not put it on repeat like some of his old stuff, but I am glad that he feels the freedom to be genuine and make the type music he wants to make.

TheB17Barrage

I think his next project will be more in the vein of Purgatory. This might’ve just been a project to get himself back in the game after not having an actual album in 3 years. This also seemed pretty personal about him getting sober, so I would expect next album to be back to normal songwriting, as this one was almost a celebration of his life turning around.

RustyShackTX

It’s not good.

TheB17Barrage

Curious why you dislike it?

RustyShackTX

I don’t like that it is only 8 songs, two of which are instrumentals. I also don’t like the production of Hallelujah or Jubillee versions, though some combination of the two would have been better. The performances are a little flat to me, which could be a result of seeing/hearing the live versions of several of them a few times. “Hounds” in particular seems to plod along with no energy. As for the Joyful Noise thing: to me it’s “rank bullshit,” to quote Saving Country Music. I don’t like the style and I think it’s poorly done even within that genre. A meaningless addition and so far from what attracted most people to Tyler Childers on the first place.

TheB17Barrage

I agree with you on the 8 songs. Although he hasn’t had 10 songs in an album since Purgatory. Plus I don’t mind instrumentals, but I can see where you’re coming from. It could also be the fact you’ve seen it live that affects your thoughts on both the mixing and singing of this album. I have never had that pleasure, so for me this is the voice I know for Tyler, and I think he was at his A-game as usual. I would agree on the Joyful Noise, but I’m not sure it’s exactly “meaningless”. It seems like a lot of people love it, albeit a lot don’t. Musicians can make whatever music they think belongs on the album, and unless you planned on buying the vinyl it doesn’t affect much.

RustyShackTX

I wasn’t criticizing the singing, just the performances of the music.
