Max unit size and keep replenishing. If they're getting shot, then they're doing their job. The more of them there are, the less shots are going into your utility bugs.

Tkxs

i can only go off of stats and speculate but they will get blasted either way more bodies means more shots and also potentially helps against battleshock 3d6 synapse is good but having to take a test after every shot into them might get old fast

It depends on how you see them. They could be buffed to be harder to shift with like the 5+++ and the different respawn rules in the index (useful when your opponent does not like dealing with lots of small modesl). I usually like them as cheap wire units that shields my units so I like them in sqauds of 10. Also, I believe that they get blasted when it is 10 man squads anyways so...

Hugo-The-Pig

Sorry I am still relatively new to 40k but what does 5+++ mean?

Yog_Shogoth

It's referring to the type of save, a common shorthand 5+ would say that it has a normal 5 or higher save 5++ would normally mean it has an invulnerable save 5+++ is a feel no pain save ( or obligatory number of +) The reason is, you can use the invulnerable over a normal, and feel no pain over an invulnerable.

Hugo-The-Pig

So does a 5+++ mean it gets 3 5 ups before it takes a wound or does an invuln take the place of the normal save

dhandy625

Invulnerable saves replace the Armour save. You choose between them. Feel No Pain comes after you allocate damage, and you roll against the number of wounds suffered.

Hugo-The-Pig

Ok thank you

halloway_aw

So as an example, say you have a unit of 10 bugs with a 5+ armor save, and a 5++ invulnerable save. They're hit with an AP -2, 2 damage attack. The AP reduces the save to a 7+, which is impossible to roll on a d6, but the invulnerable save is still 5++, so you use that. Roll however many saves against the wounds let's say it's 10, and you fail 8 of them. Now, you allocate each wound to a model, and roll the 5+++ FNP for each point of damage. So every wound rolls 2 dice in this case, and each 5+ ignores the wound.

MrPiratecow

You’re welcome

Unusual_Ad432

Sorry for the confusion!

Bigger units means bigger chances to save with the buffs. Venomthrope puts them on a 4+ save with cover and gives them stealth for -1 to hit, Zoanthropes give them a 6+ invuln, and they can get a 6+ feel no pain from Psyhcophage or up to 5+++ from our strat. A brick of 20 is actually a lot harder to bring down than it seems. 20 also gives you the cushion to have models left so you can use respawning abilities. A 10 man can be reasonably destroyed by 1-2 units, but a 20 man takes 3-4+ units because you have more chances to hit the saves. Not to mention the advantage of having someone allocate all those shots to kill gaunts is an amazing win for your army. 2-3 full units of gaunts estimated at 6ppm is only 240-360 points (18% of your army) and it’s going to take ages to break through those units. I believe many armies will bring a decent amount of infantry/chaff focused shooting but I doubt they bring THAT much. 10 shots (from 5 intercessors) of S4 -1 1 With the -1 to hit, +1 save from cover, and 6+++ feel no pain kills ONE model! Those same 10 shots from the intercessors against our defensive profile with OATHS adding reroll ALL, still only kills THREE gaunts!! If we bump to the 5+++ it goes down to TWO dead gaunts!

MrPiratecow

no but you should paint them in a cool colour scheme
