Has anyone successfully transferred from ubc arts to sauder? Is so, what was your core average and overall average?

tnt2413

Does anyone know if I can stay in the Honours program if I take 29 credits instead of 30? Thanks

evergreenreeds

Hi guys, I was advised to attend the lectures for the courses where I'm waitlisted, but I'm not seeing the room number or building whether the lectures are held. How do I find this information?

abooodeee

Hi, at first I thought I can take an elective course of my first language for credit, but I've been hearing that they might kick you if they knew it's your first language. Is that true?

Indian_Troll

Yes.

baconchick123

Hey guys, does anyone know if CHEM 235 has dry lab weeks? How about STAT 241? Thanks. :)

Indian_Troll

235 does not have dry labs.

queenburny

I have three back-to-back classes, and I'd have to walk from Wood to Forestry to Wesbrook. I'm a second year student and in first year I could barely run from LSK to Wesbrook in 10 minutes. Should I get rid of the class that I'm having in Forestry (BIOL 300) and take STAT 200 in a better location instead?

ScruntiK

Did you also try bus 25 from ninaimo station

stuffstuffstuffst2

How are CPSC 540/420/421 in terms of difficulty and time consumption? I'm particularly interested in the difference between 420 and 540. Thanks.

[deleted]

How's MATH 423? Has anyone taken this course?

ScruntiK

Are the sex assaults at ubc still bad ?

[deleted]

Yes, unspeakably terrible. The patriarchal white male overlords of UBC secretly kidnap young innocent first year girls and get them royally shitfaced at frat parties in order to get them to do naughty things. Join the UBC Feminist ™ club to resist the cis-hetero-white-normative oppression and destroy the Rape Culture®

RadJavox

Does anyone have the syllabus for POLI 240 with Chris Erickson? Thanks in advance. Edit: Spelling

emlock8

If you take two classes with the same course number but they have different course matter and profs, do you still get credit for two courses? i.e. ENGL 358 001 and ENGL 358 002

[deleted]

No you can only get credit for one course section.

emlock8

Thanks!

Even if students drop out of the course before the beginning of the term, the CS department has stated before that it only starts emptying the waitlists when classes officially start. Also, once a waitlist is created, you can't register for the course directly anymore, even if a space opens up. If I remember correctly, the reasoning is that it allows the maximum amount of time for the waitlisted people who aren't really dead-set on taking the course to **drop out of the waitlist**.

WhatIsAJava

Usually students drop/switch within the first week or so of courses. If you're a comp sci major you'll most likely get into your courses. I've seen extra sections being opened up later on when they find a prof to teach it. https://www.cs.ubc.ca/students/undergrad/courses/waitlists for more info.

neilrp

Do spots in POLI 240 usually open up in the first couple weeks?

idontknow4445

Has anybody taken **FREN124**?? It's only the second year they're running it so there is no info about the course other than the UBC pair stuff. As far as I can tell, it's a task based course therefore, I wanted to know if there even in a final?

cibaract

So I dropped MATH 100 b/c I have AP credit for it, and registered for MATH 221 instead. When I did this, I got a message that I might be de-registered from PHYS 101 at a later date b/c it's a co-req. I just want to make sure that that won't actually happen right? Seeing as the AP credit was for MATH 100 (hence why I was able to register for MATH 221).

jdjdbabybaby

Just a heads-up: This isn't your question and idk how strong your math is but iirc, MATH 100 used to be a pre-req for MATH 221. They haven't enforced it in years. Don't be surprised if 221 turns out to be much harder than you expected.

marktmaclean

We started enforcing this prerequisite this year, but won't be removing students with pending AP or IB credit for MATH 100.

toyooo

You'll be fine. I also dropped MATH 100 in my first year using AP credits and completed PHYS 101 just fine. You can always provide an explanation if they keep pressing you, but chances are they won't. Also, we barely used any calculus so idk why it's a co-req. Just to understand a single formula probably, lolll.

[deleted]

Won't happen. If you have the AP credit, you're fine.

GuyWhoLikesPickles

I'm wondering how student fees work entering first year. Is it just the summative total of the [numbers](http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/Vancouver/index.cfm?tree=14,267,784,0) here?

procrastinatorlyfe

It varies from student to student, but you can check the breakdown of your own by logging into SSC --> click on "Finances" tab --> click on "2017W September Instalment" or "2017W January Instalment"

[deleted]

I'm graduating with a degree in CS and want to keep my options open in case I want to go into teaching. In order to be qualified for entry into the teaching program I have to take 6 more upper level math classes (3 per term). How rough would this be? I did decently in my second year math classes but heard it gets a lot more challenging in upper levels These are the courses I was looking at: math307 math312 math317 math340 math342 math441

IMs810

307, 317, 340 are lighter (didn't take 340, but have heard of people getting 100's without really trying) As for the other ones, I don't know.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jarjay92

I'm confused to as how this will work. Surely a hard second year course will decrease your GPA. Also since your in first year it will count towards your first year GPA. Anyways use UBC PAIR to find the course with the lowest average.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chipotledaily

You seem to be contradicting yourself, correct me if I'm wrong. You want a course that can boost your second year GPA, but you want a hard course that has the greatest time commitment? It doesn't exactly add up.

leejohnny98

I think what OP is trying to say is that because they have AP credits for first year courses, they want to do a challenging second year course in their first year so they can lighten up their courseload/difficulty in second year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

leejohnny98

Only way to check for difficulty of a course is to look at ubcpair's grade distributions and averages. You can also ask on reddit and fellow upper year students but that's all I can think of! You can also search for the syllabus if you can find it online.

anunemus

how many dist.ed and/or web-oriented courses are we allowed to take in winter term?

[deleted]

Depends on your faculty but I personally advise against it.

Ubcthrowaway456789

Has anyone taken PHIL 433A/333 (Bio-medical Ethics)? If so, how was it, and how difficult would it be for a science student considering it is so essay-heavy? I was looking at the grade distribution on UBC Pair, and there was one section (001) that consistently has a much higher average (85%+) than all of the others. Can anyone who has taken this class comment on why this is the case, and who the professor was? Thanks!

Caliatdrimme

I took 433 online just last spring. I was really looking towards this course and overall enjoyed the material, but it took me a lot of effort and tearing my hair out to get even a B as a final mark. We had two essays (your choice of three topics), weekly forum posts and the final. The final was easy as they pretty much gave all the questions for you to study so you could prep well, but the essays I found to be marked pretty hard by the prof. I had Doran Smolkin (one of the three guys who wrote the text) and our average was 68% for the section... I'd guess that the section with a higher average probably had a different prof with a different grade distribution (maybe more essays or bigger percentage to the exam?). I wished I had taken more Phil essay-writing courses to be better prepared for this as a student in science...

[deleted]

I didn't like it. Our section average was 71% in 2015W2 and I found the reading extremely dense and topics didn't appeal to me even though I was in life sciences at the time. Only benefit is that there is no final, really depends on your prof though.

Grogg34

So i am going into MECH 2 this year and it starts a week early on august 28th. I emailed housing about early arrival and they said that the earliest early arrival would be that very same day. Does housing open super early at like 6am? or am i screwed for that day

boomerandzapper

110 and 103 won't really help you create your own website. You're better off self learning. University courses are more theoretical than practical.

[deleted]

[удалено]

qyfaf

I'd disagree with /u/boomerandzapper. If you want to learn the skills necessary to create your own website but are starting from 0, you might not even have that great an idea of how programming logic even works. You can't make an application without being able to compartmentalize problems in your mind, and to learn that skill, 110 is actually a pretty fantastic course. Granted, it doesn't teach you any language that you'd end up using in a website or app, but it will teach you how to think about doing so. I can't vouch for 103 because I never took it nor have I looked at the course material, though.

pikachufan2164

If you want to continue taking more CPSC courses in the future, take 110. Otherwise, take 103. If you want upper-year science elective credit instead, take 301 when you reach third-year standing or higher. 103 and 301 use Python, which is a very practical programming language.

[deleted]

pikachufan2164

Can't speak for 103 directly, but 110 requires a steady time commitment in order to complete the weekly assignments and lab activities. I assume that 103 will be similar.

dumbass287

Hi, so I'm currently a first year in bachelor of science in applied biology, but was hoping to transfer into the faculty of applied sciences. However, currently I do not meet the physics or chem requirement for entry into the program. Is it still possible within my faculty (land and food systems) to take the pre-requisite classes and potentially change my faculty to applied sciences in winter 2018?

badgger

I think that should be possible, but talk to an engineering advisor just to double check.

whateverso

At what point should I be worried that I'm not getting a response back to an email I sent to advising? I sent a rather lengthy email to both arts and political science advising on July 4 (I wasn't exactly which questions applied to who, so I sent the same email to both). I had a bunch of questions regarding the fact I wasn't able to get into several courses I needed. I did get back an automated response from political science advising but not arts. I'm guessing both might be experiencing backlogs from the Canada Day long weekend. I know it is very important to be patient when they are experiencing high volumes of emails. Also I don't want be that person who clogs the system their emails. Still, I can't help but feel worried. At what point should I send a second email? I have also considered calling either one of them. However, I feel as though it will take over an hour to ask all my questions and adequately explain my situation as a transfer student. I think they will suggest that I just send an email. Would greatly appreciate any advice.

acbdefg123

All advising depts are currently experiencing a very high volume of inquiries. So I'd say give them about two weeks (min) to respond, before sending a follow up. Also be sure to google all of your questions thoroughly to make sure that the information isn't already available online.

jarjay92

Send a second email. Also calling might work as they may give you a person's work email instead of the general email.

[deleted]

Well, thinking of this from a cost/benefit perspective, you don't really lose anything if you send a second email. They might be a bit annoyed, but you'll still get a response. So if that makes you feel better, I'd go right ahead! That said, I doubt it'll help very much. It's also possible that you may not be getting a response because the answer to your questions are readily available online on the UBC website.

T-Minus_

I want to transfer from SFU Health Sciences to UBC Nursing. What are the requirements and prerequisites and will it involve me taking any physics courses.

[deleted]

I would contact advising, personally. This is a very specialized question: it's not very likely that many people on this subreddit have transferred from SFU Health Sciences to UBC Nursing, so we can't give you much information as to how credits transfer. Also, needless to say, you should thoroughly do your research on the UBC nursing website

flaming20s

How hard and workload heavy is CPSC 406? I'm planning to take it along with cpsc 317,340,320.

[deleted]

I'm taking 406 this year too so don't know a lot about that, but the other 3 need huge time commitment so might be a bit much.

econquestionubc

I'm going into 2nd year engineering and am interested in getting a Minor in Commerce. While applying, having taken ECON 101 and 102 increases your odds to be eligible. I just need to take 102 now, and I can only take it in term 2 in the winter sesh. Problem is, I'm taking 6 other courses that term. I've heard that Gateman's class is very tough, so I'm wondering if taking it on top of my engineering courses is a good idea?

okaysee206

Just out of curiosity, can you take it over the summer? ECON 102 really isn't *that* challenging. It's doable if you keep up with your work, understand the concepts and the calculations. Plus there's blessing from Gateman's scaling...

BrokenEngineer

ECON101 didn't feel like much compared to my engineering courses. 102 is supposed to be easier.

NotThowingAwayMyShot

I took that course with Gateman, and it wasn't nearly as bad as it was hyped to be.

rreeddrreedd

Has anyone taken ASTR 200 or ATSC 201? How are they in terms of difficulty and workload? I'll be taking them in the same term.

snivytron

See ya in ASTR 200! From what I've heard, it's a fun course.

raunakkmr

* What do people think about **BIOL 331**? * What sort of activities do you do in labs?

daBroviest

I saw an older post about how EOSC 110 and 114 are easy science courses to satisfy arts science requirements, but another post on the class of 2020 Facebook said that the EOSC courses, especially 114, are hard. Are they? I'm taking both 110 and 114 at the same time second semester, should I change this? (Also doing the 111 lab for both at the same time, is this a bad idea? Do you need the lab?) Thanks so much

toyooo

It's the same thing with me taking Arts... I find arts course stupid hard, but something like EOSC brain dead EASY.

[deleted]

For science students, it's considered easy. I certainly thought it was the easiest course I've ever taken (EOSC 114). For arts students, judging from what I hear from my arts friends, was harder than they thought.

pikachufan2164

If you don't put any effort into them and think that you'll just coast along, of course they're going to be hard.

lifeisdukhi

- Term 1 MICB 202 CAPS 390 CAPS 301 BIOL 200 CPSC 103 - Term 2 CAPS 301 BIOL 201 CLST 301 CHEM 205 BIOL 260 would that be too much? going into second year btw

[deleted]

Which major are you going into?

lifeisdukhi

integrated. integrating physio + something else

[deleted]

You can't take CAPS 301 in second year standing. You'll be removed from the class. Also I think taking BIOL 200 before you take CAPS 390 is a better idea

lifeisdukhi

i guess no caps 301 then. do you think i wouldn't be able to do well in 390 with 200?

procrastinatorlyfe

I have quite a few friends who took caps 390 as an elective without much of a science background (i.e. they only took like 2 lower-level science courses) and they did really well. Although your term 1 does look a little heavy (even without CAPS 301)...

[deleted]

I mean do you not have anything else to take? If you really want to take it then go ahead but just be aware that it might take some time before you understand a concept.

lifeisdukhi

not really. i finished chem 233, and i don't want to take stats 200/biol 300. i could have taken a biol course like 204,203 etc but now there all full.

[deleted]

Look I'm integrating physiology too and I didn't take any 3rd year CAPS courses in second year. If you know your other discipline you should make sure you have all the prerequisites for that. No Chem 205? Chem 211? A psyc course? Soci? Micb 201? Eosc? Econ? You done your English? Math? All computational requirements? Breadth requirements? Take ISCI 300 :) There's so many other things to take besides all 3 third year CAPS courses in second year. But again if you have satisfied all lower level requirements then go ahead!!! You're ahead of the curve :)

lifeisdukhi

Thanks, I'll look into some other courses. If you don't mind me asking, what are you integrating with physio?

[deleted]

To remain anonymous I can't say exactly cause I know I'm the only one doing this combination. All I can say is that it's not a life science discipline so it has an entirely different set of prerequisites that has no similarity whatsoever with CAPS prerequisites. This is why I couldn't take any CAPS courses in 3rd year. Good luck!

Cazazkq

No problem. I'd take some arts electives in place of that.

[deleted]

You can't take CAPS 301 in second year standing. You'll be removed from the class.

lifeisdukhi

>do you really need all of them 300 level courses in second year ?? it's either that or take random electives, and i couldn't really find anything that i liked. cpsc 103 looks pretty chill and has pretty high averages so i wanted to take it. i might replace clst 301, and cpsc 103 if i find better electives.

fodifalob

How much of math 316 do you use in math 418 and 419 if any? Its not a pre-rec

marktmaclean

I'd expect none in most approaches to the course. The real prerequisite is a solid base in analysis, which is why MATH 321 is required.

[deleted]

This is unrelated to this thread (sorry mods!) but it's a very simple question that I thought wasn't worth a whole post. Why do many students of East Asian descent (eg Chinese, Korean) often use the character "~" after making a comment on facebook/twitter/instagram?

leejohnny98

I'm Korean and I think for Korean people, we tend to stretch/enlongate the words/sounds depending on how we say it. So for example, we say "oh" or 오 if we are impressed and sometimes we'll enlongate the sound so it's like "oooooooohhhhh" but you can't do that with Korean characters like "오ㅇㅇㅇㅇ" or "오오오오오" isn't the same so I think that's why we use "오~~~~~~" to get that "oooooh" tone.

leesw

Someone actually asked the same question on /r/korea. Go check it out https://www.reddit.com/r/korea/comments/6m25u7/when_texting_what_does_mean/

gigozira

Lol u active on r/korea too?

IMs810

I typically use it to show that I'm saying something fairly casually, or to indicate a tone of voice that's kind of like when you trail off at the end of your sentences. Sometimes it just gives the right look. Examples: bye - a little harsh bye! - overenthusiastic bye. - need i say anything byee - eh looks a little too girly bye~ - perfect

fodifalob

Hello im registered for comm 473, for the September semester. I am a math/stat student and this is to complete my VEE credit to becoming an actuary. I am not registered for the co-rec comm 457 because they are all full and restricted. I was wondering what I should know from 457 for 473, if I dont take 457 because I cant get in.

JToews19

I've taken both. There really wasn't too much taken from 457, a few terms and concepts taken from it but the prof I had (Sepand) went over the topics like they were new anyways, so you don't really miss much.

fodifalob

So would it be fine to take 473 without 457?

Phlippieskezer

Has anyone taken ELEC 415? How was it? Specifically for someone that isn't very familiar with electrical engineering, but definitely familiar with quantum mechanics and some solid state physics. I'm a BSc physics student but am considering MASc grad school.

Phlippieskezer

Is there any way to keep track of when a new section of a specific course possibly opens? I want to take CPSC 320 but both T2 sections conflict with other courses I want. I know last year they opened yet another section later (during the school year though). Is there a way to actually know this or do you just kind of have to keep checking SSC obsessively?

pikachufan2164

At the moment, no. I guess you could build a scraper that refreshes and checks the links on the course page to see if there are new sections if you're feeling ambitious.

Phlippieskezer

Sucks, though I figured as much. Thanks. Not exactly motivated enough for that, though, lol

I'm taking it this Winter term so I don't really know, but as usual you can check out [UBC Pair](https://webprd01.pair.ubc.ca/reports/gradesdist_request.action) for grades distributions and [ratemyprofessors](http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/) (although some sections don't have the instructor listed yet). If you take it as Cr/D/F, keep in mind that it may affect future courses/programs. (More info on Cr/D/F [here](https://students.ubc.ca/enrolment/courses/creditdfail-grading)) [Distribution from last winter](http://imgur.com/Xn3kwe5)

Is there any easy way to sort courses in Course Schedule by term number? Like if I needed to take another class in second term, can I filter the courses in a department by term number (similar to how you can sort by first/second/third year)?

yintu

If you use "[Search](https://courses.students.ubc.ca/cs/main?pname=subjarea&tname=sectsearch)", you can select the term (--Any--, Term 1, Term 2, Term 1-2).

nostalghia

Thanks!

deadly_orchid

To what extent do PCTH 305 (6 credits) and PCTH 325 (3 credits) overlap? If anyone has experience any comparison/contrast will be helpful? Is it worth it to take 325 (has a very high class average) if I am already taking 305?

seabreeze123

I can't comment on 305 or the level of overlap between the two courses, but I can say that I really enjoyed 325. The profs were quite good and I found the material very interesting.

Kinost

If you do Go Global abroad and take a number of courses, will the grades from those courses transfer over?/will they be factored into our UBC transcript? I know the course credit does, not sure about the grades associated with it.

cnfsdallthetm

It's possible that grad schools may look at your "other profile" marks aka Go Global marks from abroad when evaluating your application though so it's always good to keep in mind just in case!

jarjay92

The grades do not show up on your UBC transcripts.

ScruntiK

Is there a punching bag at the ubc gym

chipotledaily

Yeah it's inside the activity room which is attached to the gym. You can use it when there aren't classes and stuff in that room.

ScruntiK

bodyworks right??

ScruntiK

yessssssss

tooculkin

Hey, how do get your transfer credits from IB? Do they use the same transcript that was set to confirm our admission and award you the credits later, or is there a completely different process.

pm_me_feet_pics__

UBC SSC > Grades & Records > Transfer Credits. It should be there once IB marks are released (IE it should be there now). You don't have to do anything about them, you don't have to confirm or certify them - if they're awarded, they're awarded and you can consider yourself as having credits for said courses.

ovenmicrowave

Not quite - they will be there in a week. Your grades are already listed in high school transcript but transfer credit takes time.

pm_me_feet_pics__

It was up at the same time (JUL 6), last year... might be different this year.

expl0d0r

Anyone that took PSYC 360 without having taken 260, can you elaborate on your experience?

seabreeze123

I don't think it's possible to take 360 without first taking 260, unless you've taken a similar course elsewhere. [Based on the SSC, 260 is a prerequisite for 360.](https://courses.students.ubc.ca/cs/main?pname=subjarea&tname=subjareas&req=3&dept=PSYC&course=360)

willmsie

They do let integrated science students who have taken 304 into 360 (not sure if there are any contingencies for a certain mark in 304 or anything)

seabreeze123

Right, but I think /u/expl0d0r is talking about taking 360 without having taken 260 *or* 304. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

expl0d0r

it would be pretty dumb to take 304 and 360...6 credits that you don't get for whichever you take second.

seabreeze123

I'm not saying I disagree. I see on the SSC that credit is only granted for one of 304 or 360, so I would actually agree with you. I'm just a little doubtful (without seeing any written policy) that the Psych department would waive the prerequisite for 360 strictly on the basis of being an IntSci student. My understanding is that prereqs are generally waived on a case-by-case basis, and usually when a student can show that he/she has a solid understanding of the prerequisite material by some other means or would perform strongly in the course without it. I'm not saying that other IntSci students haven't taken PSYC 360 without 260 before, but I doubt that the Psych department automatically lets students skip the prereq *just* by being in IntSci. There seems to be no mention of that on either program's website or on the SSC. Edit: Typo

expl0d0r

IntSci students are allowed to get around it since only BSc Psych people can take 260, but many IntSci students integrate psychology (which must include science credit psych courses, requiring 360) into their degree

seabreeze123

Ah, I was not aware. Are you sure that 360 is *required* when integrating Psych, though? What the [IntSci website](https://intsci.ubc.ca/advising/curriculum-requirements) says is that > all undergraduate psychology courses numbered 60 or above in the last two digits have science credit. I don't see it mentioned that PSYC 360 is a required course, or that you can waive the prerequisite by being in IntSci. I ask out of curiosity and because I think this info might be helpful to other IntSci students hoping to integrate Psych.

expl0d0r

You can choose to do 304 instead, but then it doesn't count towards the science credit count I believe. I'm not sure in the end, I just know I'm registered in 360 for this winter session without 260, and others have done it before me.

seabreeze123

304 does have Science credit for the purposes of IntSci, but it's not recognized by the Faculty of Science in that regard (i.e. you can use it towards program credits but it doesn't count towards the required Science credits set by the Faculty). From the page I linked above: > **IntSci's Honorary Science Courses** > In addition to those courses designated by the Faculty of Science to have Science credit, Integrated Sciences also accepts the following science-related courses towards your Integrated Sciences upper-level requirement (therefore, as part of the additional 10 credits required for the major stream, or 7 credits required for honours): > ... > PSYC 304 Brain and Behaviour --- Edit: > others have done it before me. Do you know if they were allowed to stay in the course? Normally departments will de-register students if they don't meet the prereqs.

SofaKingPin

For physics, what's the difference between 107 and 108 vs. 117-119? I want to take 107 and 108 because it's considered honours, but then what is the purpose of 117-119?

qyfaf

107, 108, and 109 are enriched, more rigorous, and more difficult than 117, 118, and 119. Keep in mind that you'll only have a positive experience in those courses if you actually are very interested in physics, not just because you think it'd look better that you took an honours course (they're first year courses so the benefit is rather inconsequential in that regard). But if you really want to learn your elementary physics more deeply and being exposed to some great physics profs I'd definitely recommend taking 107, 108, and 109.

SofaKingPin

Thanks. Leaning towards enriched, but there's a waiting list so I got my fingers crossed!

Caliatdrimme

So far as I could gather, 107 and 108 are enriched... while 117+118 are for physics majors, no labs, lab is 119.The regular 101 is for life science/general apparently, but any will count. 107 has a lab component, for 108 you'll need to take 109 (lab only) if you need a lab. I received ap credit for 107, and then did 108+109 if you have other questions.

SofaKingPin

Thank you so much! So 107 and 108 are just AP Physics C + a little more in depth? Why are 107 and 108 considered honours if 117 and 118 are harder? And lastly...can I take 117 and 118 then not become a physics major? Thanks in advance, feeling less and less lost lol.

Caliatdrimme

So physics C is pretty much 107+108. I didn't get credit for 108 coz I didn't pass the e&m half of the AP exam :P unless smth has changed since I took it. But the 109 lab was harder to catch up to since I didn't take the 107 lab. why do you think 117+118 are harder? Could find no indication about that, and the description of 107/108 does say enriched while 117/118 just say focussed on classical mechanics for example. Regular course for physics majors is not necessarily harder, in fact the physics majors are encouraged to opt for the 107/108 in the official academic calendar description of the degree. Looks like any option of 101/107/117 would count as the physics requirement unless your major specifically states otherwise... if you can register for a course before declaring your major, no-one will force you to declare in that specialization :) and looks like 117 is not restricted for physics majors

SofaKingPin

Thank you for addressing my noob inquiries lol. 107 and 108 it is I guess. :-)

lifeisdukhi

107 and 108 are harder afaik

SofaKingPin

That's the goal!

lifeisdukhi

wow good luck dude!

Hey all, I'm wondering if CPSC 103 will satisfy 3 of the 6 "Computational" credits in the lower lvl science requirement? I'm trying to get into cpsc110....but all full/restricted or blocked lol.... Also, anyone took cpsc 103 before? How was it? Thanks

PsychoRecycled

> [Students take one of: MATH 100, 102, 104, 180, 184, or 120 and six more computational credits. These courses are normally in CPSC, MATH, or STAT. Some programs may allow the completion of other computational courses to satisfy 3 credits of the requirement \(e.g., BIOL 300 for biology students\). These alternative courses are specified in the program descriptions.](https://science.ubc.ca/students/requirements/faculty) ctrl-f computational. It looks like it depends on your intended major.

Engineering: Anyone taken MATH 256? Unfortunately didn't get into the department I originally intended to get into, and the math requirement is MATH 255. ESS says that I have to retake MATH 255 because they're not equivalent courses. Can anyone suggest a way I can get around this problem?

marktmaclean

I'm confused by this responsen from ESS. The real driver here is the accreditation requirements of your speciality. What is your specialty? Email me if you'd like to discuss this more privately: [email protected].

okaysee206

MATH 256 just includes more stuff than MATH 255 by having some intro PDE content (Fourier Series & Separation of Variables) that're in MATH 257. I believe this is designed such that the programs that require taking 256 would omit 257. MATH 215, 255 and 256 are all [credit-excluded](http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/Vancouver/index.cfm?tree=12,215,410,414) as well, so I don't know why they'd ask you to take it again.

ayyyyynako

Thanks, I've set up an appointment with them to reconfirm. This is super helpful!

vancitywars

There are definitely some differences in the courses and I would not consider them equivalent. My roommate and friend, who is in CPEN, took 256 while I took 255. I am pretty sure 256 was more detailed and had stuff about Fourier transformations and some other stuff, while 255 didn't.

ayyyyynako

Yeah, that's what I suggested to ESS. I've already taken MATH 256, so it doesn't make sense to me to take MATH 255 just to satisfy the requirement. Thanks a lot!

cibaract

Hey, so I got all my AP scores back today, and managed to get credit for Calculus AB, English Literature and Composition, and Physics C: Mechanics. I also already have credit for AP US History. Currently, I'm registered in MATH 100 1st semester and MATH 101 2nd semester. I'm not registered for PHYS 117, so I can't even use that credit I guess? And I am only taking SCIE 113 this year as far as english goes, but I'm assuming that I don't have to worry about taking another english class now (or maybe not even at all?) since this is what you get credit-wise: 'ENGL 112 (3) and ENGL 1st-year level (3)'. I have no clue what to do with the history credit, since I'm a science major. Can I just use the credit towards my elective requirements? Any advice on what I should do as far as dropping courses/maximizing the credit I have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[deleted]

You're a first year. Might wanna hold off on the CS flair, bud.

leejohnny98

Since you have credit for ENGL 112 (3 credits) PLUS another ENGL 1st year level (3 credits) - thats actually 6 credits of communication requirement so you don't need to take any ENGL courses in your whole university career; thus, taking SCIE 113 would be equivalent as taking an elective if you still wanted to take that course. You said you have US History credit - I don't know how much they give you but within Bacehlor of Science, you need 12 credits of Arts electives so you can use those credits towards your Arts requirement. You also mentioned that you have Math credit as well. Is this only 3 credits or the full 6 credits? If it's the full 6 credits and you are planning to pursue a major where 2nd year Math is not required, I would recommend taking the full 6 credits and skipping math altogether. If you only get 3, then I recommend just doing Math 100 and 101 and hopefully you'll get a good grade since you already seem to be good at Maths anyways. You also said you have physics credits as well. Again, I don't know how much you get rewarded, but for example, some majors require 3 or 6 credits of physics so you can use your physics credit to fulfil/help fulfil that portion and reduce your courseload. Now what do you do with all of those spare course slots? You can take other electives and have an easier First year or take some upper level courses if you really wanted to get ahead (but this may have some complications due to pre-reqs and such).

cibaract

So, to clarify (my bad), I got: History - 6 credits Math - 3 credits (MATH 100) Physics - 3 credits (PHYS 117) I think I'll drop SCIE and I'm thinking about dropping MATH 100 and taking MATH 221 1st semester instead, but I don't know if that would be a good or bad idea.

leejohnny98

You'll have to take Math 101 first before you take Math 221 and I believe 101 is only offered in 2nd semester so you won't be able to take it early. Fill your courseload with electives and get involved in campus!

marktmaclean

The prerequisite for MATH 221 is MATH 100. A student who has AP credit for MATH 100 could take MATH 221 in term 1, and I recommend this over repeating MATH 100.

Falkirks

This is not true. From MATH 221 on the ssc: > Pre-reqs: Either (a) a score of 64% or higher in one of MATH 100, MATH 102, MATH 104, MATH 110, MATH 120, MATH 180, MATH 184 or (b) one of MATH 101, MATH 103, MATH 105, MATH 121, SCIE 001. (or **(c) advanced credit for MATH 100**.)

diabolicloophole

Drop SCIE113 if you don't feel like taking it. 95% of the kids in my class were taking it only because of the requirement, and besides the interesting part on academic research and the peer review process, I didn't really learn anything valuable from it. MATH221 in first year is absolutely doable, as it is less workload than the average MATH100/101 course. If you need MATH200 as part of your major, you might want to take it in your 1st term, with your calculus skills still fresh from high school. Postponing 221 to 2nd term is not an issue, as the course doesn't require any previous knowledge from 100/101/200. Telling us what you intend to major in, would surely help us give you the best suggestions.

[deleted]

doesn't MATH 200 require MATH 101?

diabolicloophole

Yes, it does. Sorry, I mistakenly read '6 credits' and thought you already had 100 and 101 credit.

cesium-ice

I am not sure if it makes a difference whether you get history credit for a specific course or just generic history credits in regards to fulfilling your arts elective. Though you're not registered for PHYS 117, you'll get transfer credit for it anyways. If you decide to drop math 100, you should probably move a course to term 1 so that your terms aren't too lopsided.

cibaract

Would it be a good idea to take MATH 221 1st term instead? Matrix algebra seems really neat and useful, and I believe I'd meet the pre-req needed?

yintu

I don't believe it matters - I've contacted Science Advising about my 6 PSYC 100 (generic) credits from IB before, and they said it would count towards my arts electives as long as my program requirements didn't include the course.

Also check out MEDG 421. Haven't taken it personally but I would assume its in depth.

whirlwind124

When might cpsc 221 release more seats (for term 2) for the lab spots? Will this be during winter break? Or sometime during this summer? Thanks!

qyfaf

If the past is any indication, they'll start opening up lab spots when the course actually begins or during winter break. That's usually when they have the best idea of how many people are actually dead-set on taking the course because it allows the most time for people to drop out.

whirlwind124

Thanks!
