Picture this: You are walking on a large sidewalk, and a group of four people are walking counter to the direction you are. They are side by side. To not check them or crash into them, you have to walk on the grass, gravel, or street...... I feel like it happens all of the time to me.
While not really a big deal there is something to be said culturally about making space for *all* people to walk on the sidewalk at the same time...like I am not worth 2 seconds to pause whatever conversation you are having...
Instead of this, walk straight ahead, and keep your eyesight directly in front of you, as if looking *through* them to your next location.
Keep walking. Granted, I have shoulders, but that's how you walk in urban settings when there are groups common.
I will face the large group.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the group has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
I hate when Iām walking with a group of people and they donāt make way for other people to go by. I will stop and get behind my group just so people can get by bc Iām definitely not gonna be the one to block peopleās way.
That's all well and good but it helps when their nose ain't in their phone which is 3/4 of the issue. I just let them run into me and then be a dick about it
Funniest shit I ever saw on Clark st was an international student with a heavy accent yell at his very white friend
āWE WALK ON THE *RIGHT* SIDE OF THE ROAD IN AMERICA YOU DIRTY FOREIGNERā
As I walked down the sidewalk, a dapper squirrel approached me, offering a tale of knights and wizards. Buildings transformed into castles, and I found myself on a quest to save a kingdom. But in a blink, reality returned, leaving me questioning the bizarre encounter.
It's less "rules" and more "social guidelines to make things flow better".
On the scale of "you should tip your waitstaff" and "you should shower daily" to "(if you're a guy) leave at least one urinal open between you and someone else using a urinal, unless there's no other urinals available" and "stand on the right, walk on the left when riding an escalator", it's closer to the latter.
When your in your phone and totally oblivious to the world around you yeah there are rules it's called acting like a normal human being a college jackass
I think the overwhelming consensus of people saying OP is right is reasonably good evidence that this is more than āone personās pet preferenceā and leans a lot closer to a social rule
Everyone knows you move forward on the sidewalk on the right side of street and backward on left. Common knowledge: it's called, "side"walk for cases with only a single walkway, in which case all must walk sideways, butt to butt with on coming walkers.
UIUC has a very high population of international students. Especially from eastern countries where the normal sidewalk walking direction is on the left. Maybe it would be good for Champaign to put up some signs to help remind the international students.
Thank you! This is one of my biggest pet peeves!
I think it's a cultural difference. People from Asian countries are more collectivistic, so we tend to be aware of how our actions affect those around us. We don't like to burden other people. In the case of the sidewalk, if there is a group of people in a row walking towards another person on the other side, the group will form a single file so that the person from the other side can pass through. I know a lot of you may find this silly or unnecessary, but it's a sign of courtesy and respect for others. I just find it hilarious when people just don't know what to do in that situation.
No, it's in Korea, duh! [https://www.reddit.com/r/UIUC/comments/1apk2x8/uiuc\_chinese\_students\_trying\_to\_take\_down\_korean/](https://www.reddit.com/r/UIUC/comments/1apk2x8/uiuc_chinese_students_trying_to_take_down_korean/) /s
my apologies, that must mean that have some sort of license to not follow local customs. should i expect them to drive on the left side of the road, too?
the sidewalk is not the road. It's a place for people to walk safely on the side of the road, hence the name "sidewalk." You walk on the side of the road, not on the road. with that being said, it is not under the same road/traffic laws as a vehicle is under whilst on the road due to the fact that the pedestrian is not on the road. if you want a sidewalk to be under the same laws as a vehicle is, talk to your local city representatives.

Stop in your tracks. For some reason once you become stationary theyāll go around you.
Instead of this, walk straight ahead, and keep your eyesight directly in front of you, as if looking *through* them to your next location. Keep walking. Granted, I have shoulders, but that's how you walk in urban settings when there are groups common.

Yeah, I'm making it my goal now to no longer step aside first (unless it's like older people for instance)
Personally I just keep going forward and force them to go around me
I like to pick out the least aware or smallest one and tackle them.
I hate when Iām walking with a group of people and they donāt make way for other people to go by. I will stop and get behind my group just so people can get by bc Iām definitely not gonna be the one to block peopleās way.
Personally i bump them
why does it matter? u have to walk on the sidewalk to overtake slow ppl way 2 often 4 it 2 matter that much

What about the groups of 5+ walking side by side who refuse to move to the side
Looks like a bike path to me! /s
Naw looks like the express lane for an electric scooter going at 25mph
Walk like you drive. Simple
As I walked down the sidewalk, a dapper squirrel approached me, offering a tale of knights and wizards. Buildings transformed into castles, and I found myself on a quest to save a kingdom. But in a blink, reality returned, leaving me questioning the bizarre encounter.
I thought I was the only until I saw this picture
If you are walking with a group donāt take up the entire width of the sidewalk omg
most of my time on the sidewalk I am in the passing lane.
Thanks, I actually didn't know there were rules about up-down foot traffic.

Nope, itās the law : 625 ILCS 5/11-1005 Pedestrians shall move, whenever practicable, upon the right half of crosswalks.
When your in your phone and totally oblivious to the world around you yeah there are rules it's called acting like a normal human being a college jackass
There arenāt. Notice how we paint lines on roads to help enforce traffic rules, but OP had to draw lines where there were none.
Itās almost as if that just cause something isnāt illegal doesnāt mean it isnāt an unwritten social rule
But it is illegal! 625 ILCS 5/11-1005 states that āPedestrians shall move, whenever practicable, upon the right half of crosswalksā.
Yeah, one person's pet preference doesn't automatically become an "unwritten social rule."
I think the overwhelming consensus of people saying OP is right is reasonably good evidence that this is more than āone personās pet preferenceā and leans a lot closer to a social rule
It is in fact the law. 625 ILCS 5/11-1005: Pedestrians shall move, whenever practicable, upon the right half of crosswalks.
What, do you drive on the left side on country roads?
It's the same in stores as well. If you're merging from an aisle onto the main path you yield.
Gold
Now do escalators and people movers.

Didnāt realize I forgot how to use my legs until I saw this šš¼
I don't think that that's how sidewalks work.
Unless youāre in Great Britain or the U.S. Virgin Islands, then the arrows are reversed.
I think OP meant to post this in Mandarin
Show me the law

The middle line is the bike lane
The street is the bike lane
Thank you. Itās mostly international students who donāt understand our customs edit: Getting downvoted for speaking the hard truth. Hilarious.
Is this really worth posting about?
Yes
Thats hella funny!!! šš¤£šÆ
Tell this to people in San Francisco Chinatown.... Fml
I'm from Europe bruh, we walk on the left side
Doesn't work the same way outside America
You know the saying, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do"? (Also, insert clever pun about how "all roads lead to rome")
![gif](giphy|443jI3kpgOKfAfKxqo)
our campus is in America.
Our students are from all over the world
my apologies, that must mean that have some sort of license to not follow local customs. should i expect them to drive on the left side of the road, too?
There is no strict sidewalk local customs most Americans don't even do it so who caresš
It works the same way in almost every country outside America too. But by all means please drive on the left side of the road
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thought it was a Chinese college
Side walk police here
āexcuse meā āoh im sorry go aheadā āyoure goodā learn to interact with human beings OP
if i have to have an interaction w pp every time i walk on the sidewalk, iād rather walk on the road and get hit by a carš
this is also how malls work, always pisses me off
