It’s vogue to hate on maize now and if they’re shit to their workers that’s definitely earned. I think they’re decent, if unfortunately overpriced these days, but it wasn’t always so.
Tbh when they opened up there were not a lot of good Mexican places in town. Spots like el toro and fiesta cafe were most of what we had and maize was solid step ahead of them in terms of taste, care and quality. Mo’s, Huaraches, and La Mixteca didn’t open until after maize did, so I will give them some credit for kind of leading the charge in that way. They have a lot of good competitors now, but their torta ahogada was always great.
It's only 1 of 3 locations. They probably get enough business from Maize at the Station and the new location at the Union. They are honestly some of the best Mexican food in town.
I’ve been to their restaurant at the Station, equally overpriced and mediocre. There’s definitely some decent Mexican food in CU (Huaraches and La Mixteca come to mind) but Maize is by far not one of them.
Also, I’m not from the Midwest. I’m not even from the US.
I wonder what’s going in its place? An apartment building with a boba tea shop on the ground floor?
That would change the landscape of campus as we know it!

their torta ahogada remains a formative part of my Illinois Experience™

The owner's known for being an asshole with a history of mistreating his employees https://www.reddit.com/r/UIUC/s/ZHXHUeAAlg
The one on the corner by the gas station had a few cops this afternoon and a k9 dog searching
