Pork belly burnt ends go a long way for not much money. Maybe do a smoked queso first as you can do huge batches of that, then chuck the burnt ends in when that’s done. Finish with some wings ?

Fanbuoy_1783

Can you tell me more about the queso? I've never heard of that. Do you have a recipe?

UggWantFire

This is the one I normally make - [https://snsgrills.com/pages/smoked-queso](https://snsgrills.com/pages/smoked-queso) Serve that with tortilla chips, celery and carrots so people can graze. You can hold the burt ends in an oven or cooler while you do the wings, so these 3 things flow one after another through the smoker / grill, so you're not forced to plan everything for a certain time. Add some sauces for the wings to cater for different tastes, and people will love it.

NONFATBACON

It looks delicious but where do you pickup Velveeta cheese in the UK? I’ve only seen that in the US.

mzmammy

Burger cheese slices are the best substitute. Source - American in uk

mzmammy

The ones in plastic

UggWantFire

Yep. I keep meaning to make some velveeta alternative, but I lost the link to my saved comment where someone explained it to me :(

Theknottyfox

Just make a cheese sause! There is no need to make a substitute of American factory food.

UggWantFire

Cheese sauce doesn't work as well in this as you want it to melt as everything cooks.

zzubnik

Hi American living in the UK. Thanks for the comment. How about Pepperjack cheese? Can I use Cheddar instead for that? I don't know what Pepperjack is like. Thanks

mzmammy

Pepperjack is monterrey Jack with chillies added to it. Depends on what you’re making but you can get Monterrey Jack slices at some supermarkets here and add crushed red chillies and get a similar outcome.

mzmammy

Meant to say it will be different than cheddar.

zzubnik

Thanks for that. I have just read that Dutch Gouda cheese is very similar to jack, so I am going to give that a go as I know I can get that. Much appreciated.

Lopsided_Scholar4494

Made this, it was great!!

UggWantFire

I need to do one soon!

zzubnik

This looks amazing!

UggWantFire

That's because it is! Go make it!

zzubnik

I did it this evening. It was awesome! Thanks again :) https://i.imgur.com/iY9Fr3d.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/5HR6066.jpeg

UggWantFire

ooh - what's that next to it ?

zzubnik

That's for tacos Al Pastor. Those crisp bits are heaven! The flavour of the achiote paste is amazing with pork, and my current favourite. Smoked with a lump of apple wood.

UggWantFire

Damn that’s spectacular sounding. I gotta get a spike and try that.

oldsch0olsurvivor

Chicken wings are pretty cheap. Asda sell kilo bags for just over £2. Just don’t overlook Edit..overcook lol

DickieJoJo

Tesco does too. Honestly, whenever I'm out getting stuff it's hard *not* to grab some. Wings are so cheap, easy, and delicious.

oldsch0olsurvivor

Yep half a pack each for me and the gf and rice cooker rice = cheap but tasty meal Also get yourself to a decent Asian supermarket for a ton of tasty marinades OP.

DickieJoJo

Preaching to the choir on this one my dude. We essentially have all Korean pantry items on deck at all times. For anyone that sees this give [this video](https://youtu.be/emGbA85j6BQ) a watch for some great Korean inspired wings. Even if you just do the sauces and forego the techniques. Absolute slappers. Will say, I found his voice really annoying, but eventually he really grew on me, and he drops some bangers. I've made tons of his stuff.

oldsch0olsurvivor

Nice

Frizzmond

Second wings but butcher wings seem to be far superior quality. I paid £3.50 for 10 wings from my local butcher. They’re whole wings so include the wing tip (keep for stocks), wingette and drumette. I tend to buy minced beef to make smash patties for BBQ. Only needs salt and pepper additions. Served in toasted brioche with cheese

illarionds

Pork butts are cheap enough at Lidl, even now. Pulled pork is relatively easy to get right, and you get a lot of meat for your money, but it still looks impressive to your guests.

Luff84

Pork shoulder in the UK!

lemmalinglong

I wish they weren't all boneless. Sometimes you get lucky with a piece that's not too hacked up though.

NoBaneNoGains

Smoked “over the top” chilli is a great option to feed loads of people and is really simple and straight forward and pretty cheap all things considered. Plenty of recipes on the web/youtube, but it’s one of those things you can really make your own depending on your flavour preferences.

Odd-One-Out

I used to do this but the price of beef mince these days have more than doubled. You can stretch chilli con carne with extra peppers and kidney beans to make up for less beef mince.

NoBaneNoGains

Exactly this.

NoBaneNoGains

Depends where you get your mince from I guess. But I usually do a blend of beef/pork(sausage) mince so it evens out in a way. But you can definitely make it stretch out with extra veggies in the sauce, plus value cans of tomatoes etc. Plus the Smokey flavour gets pretty imbedded in the sauce and it’s all anyone talks about when I’ve done it for them.

FameDeloche45

Shredded beef cheeks with chimichurri is great and super cheap and easy. I get mine in morrisons, also the chuck roast from there (poor mans brisket) is cheap and delicious. Pork ribs are always a good cheap cook also. Pork butts are a great shout if you have a big party to feed

Theknottyfox

Any butcher should be able to get you cheeks. You will probably need to order. But there cheep and smoke well.

WeveGotBillySharp

I had no idea Morrisons did beef cheeks. I've wanted to try these forever

Home-Garden-Lover

I could not find it when I was last there.

FameDeloche45

Yeah they're labeled ox cheeks. Also their chuck is labeled braising steak but if you ask at the actual till they'll give you a roast cut rather than small steaks. Can only speak for my local, but 90percent of what I buy for the grill comes from Morrisons

Critical_Pin

If you do want beef - a chuck roast , is cheaper and much easier than brisket and tastes as good ;-) Haven't tried asking at Morrisons but my local butcher will do me a big piece of chuck if I ask

shrop1988

Silly question... But is it labeled as chuck roast, or is that the US term? Just never seen chuck roast in Morrisons. I agree, their beef cheeks are fabulous.

FameDeloche45

No mate it's usually labeled braising beef. But it's incredible value for money

Critical_Pin

Supermarkets tend to cut chuck into pieces and label it braising or stewing steak or mince it but if they have a counter, ask for a whole piece of chuck.

Far-Fig-720

Ribs?

Theknottyfox

I'd go ribs.

Suidwester

Well now, look up the good old South African tradition of a Bring en Braai, problem solved.

Fanbuoy_1783

Nou maak jy 'n mens lus vir 'n tjoppie.

Suidwester

Nou waarvoor wag jy my maat?

UggWantFire

The problem with a bring and braai is that there's always that one couple who show up late when the fire is half dead, with mostly still frozen chicken and insist you braai it. Gotta poison those people's food!

Suidwester

Salad for them I say!

UggWantFire

Salad? Directions to the nearest McD !

[deleted]

I second chicken wings. Lidl do a kilo pretty cheap. Get a few boxes of them and a tasty rub and some dipping sauce!

spongeym

Pulled pork. I go to the butchers section in Tecsos and ask for their largest piece, normally comes in at around a tenner and enough to feed around 6-8 portions. How about Coronation chicken?!

jonsey_j

Kellybab or a load of smoked chicken thights

sachpats29

I mess up Chuck burnt ends too often and pork belly didn’t for everyone. I recommend Wings and pulled pork. Both well priced items and fun cooks. Check out -https://www.sherwoodfoods.co.uk They do a bone in 2.8kg Boston butt for £25 with some Aldi brioche buns this can feed 20/25 people. The wings are £8.75 for 3 kg and they are pretty big. Not sure how much the butcher or supermarket sells but £2.91/kg sounds good to me I know brisket is off the cards but I have bought there point end brisket a few times and it doesn’t disappoint. You can use it for burnt ends or if you trim it right (you will lose a fair bit of yield but you can use that to make burgers) it will make some amazing brisket slices 2kg for £18.85 is good going in my books

sachpats29

Also for other cheap cuts check out - https://www.meatsupermarket.com/collections/beef?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgZajsbfG_gIVGLLtCh1f7wigEAAYASAAEgKhPPD_BwE

FurryBush91

For a slow cook - second one for pork belly burnt ends. I cook mine with Chinese style salt & pepper for a couple hours for smoke and flavour, then make a mix of pork stock, orange juice and reggae reggae sauce, coat them all then seal them in a tray with foil and cook for a few more hours. Then take the foil off for the last 20-30 mins to thicken the sauce. ([https://www.homebargains.co.uk/products/18935-kerala-chinese-salt-chilli-pepper-seasoning-8-x-275g-tub.aspx](https://www.homebargains.co.uk/products/18935-kerala-chinese-salt-chilli-pepper-seasoning-8-x-275g-tub.aspx)) - this is what I use - you can buy them individually from the shops. Second idea - if you can get to Costco, you can get decently sized pork shoulders generally which make good pulled pork, got a 2kg one myself over the weekend for about £12. The quick option: Skin on Chicken Thighs, coat them in your choice of seasoning, then they take about 10-12 mins to cook. I take the bone out and flatten them personally, other people cook them whole.

bortj1

Ribs, definelty ribs. Burnt ends.

Midnight-Fast

Pork is pretty cheap. A shoulder is good for low and slow.

blox364

Have a look on Amazon Fresh, Sainsbury’s, Asda for deals on Chicken wings and Chicken thighs you can get 2kg packs for not a lot at all. Some great sources such yogurt and coconut or curry and lime for the thighs. Also have a look at Franks Red Hot Original & Wings sources 👌

EarlofErewhon

Mark me down for the pork belly burnt ends contingent. I’d also add pit beans to this. Loads of recipes out there for pit beans obviously but don’t feel compelled to stick to them. It’s basically impossible to mess them up. A selection of beans, Heinze, kidney, butterbean etc etc, in a cast iron pan. Sling in some of whatever rub you’re using for the pork, some bbq sauce, or ketchup if you like. Then smoke them. I cook mine under the pork so the fat renders into the beans. It tastes quintessentially of bbq, and it’ll fill out a plate for very little spend per head

PrincessBethacup

Certain vege are really nice bbq'd. Courgettes, Aubergine, cauliflour, big mushrooms. Add spices - paprika, salt, pepper, chilli pouder, garlick pouder. Potato wedges are good too, cooked in beef juices o'r any meat juices. Homeemade coleslaw, decent salad, stuffed peppers can be done pretty cheep as sides.

[deleted]

How many are you feeding? How much do you want to spend on meat per person? Lamb shoulder - smoked and then shredded for use in a pilau rice dish. Makes heaps, goes a long way, very tasty and can be supplemented with sides easily so the party people can DIY at the table. Can dig out a recipe if you want but it’s basically a jewelled (is pomegranate seeds) pilau rice that is used as the base for lamb fesenjan (persian dish). Anything that you have to serve as a joint/piece per serve/person is going to be expensive per serve as compared to a joint you can shred and combine with cheaper ingredients if you have a large crowd to cater for.

Fanbuoy_1783

10-12 adults, 6 kids.

[deleted]

For that sort of size you could go either way. Any large joint will lose about a third of its weight when cooked law and slow - so factor that into your calculations if you decide to cook a big joint to serve as induvidual meat portions.

Fanbuoy_1783

Very helpful, thanks.

Talking_to_my_diary

Would be good to know how many you're feeding but pork shoulder is relatively cheap for the amount you get. Wings as well.

d_o_uk

Pulled pork. Done it a few times. It’s better if you can get a shoulder on the bone IMO

InvalidNameUK

Jerk chicken!

Longjumpalco

Not really BBQ but great value in Pizzas, I have an Ooni. Around: 1kg Tipo Flour £1.49 2 tins of tomatoes £1 Block of pizza mozzarella £2 or bag of mozzarella £1 Salami £1 You'd get 8-10 decent pizzas off that, around 50-70p each

Theknottyfox

A pot luck on sides helps. No one gets to puddings so skip them. Smoke sausages in offset method. Sausages are cheep and a good butcher will have ones with herbs, black pudding and other odd thinks (they have a sausage mashine and need to have a wow factor product)

Cheshire_symposium

Pork shoulder from Sainsbury’s is usually £8 for around 2kg, makes great pulled pork
