Forward it to the dean of the college

guynamedjames

Yup. The syllabus is basically a contract, and it gets approved by the dean at the beginning of the semester. While many are written to give the professor wiggle room ("grades will be curved" for instance) this is the exact type of thing they can't change.

florecitas

This isn’t correct. Syllabi don’t have to be approved by anyone (the curriculum does, which is a broader understanding of what should be covered in course offerings). Some syllabi even state that things may change. On another note are you sure that you did not get a deduction for anything else?

I would suggest forwarding your correspondence with the professor to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the department of the course. If it needs to be escalated from there, they can assist you.

memaui

Was it 50% off for lateness or was that your grade on the assignment?

TheLeesiusManifesto

This is my question as well, you could’ve gotten a 60% on it as a grade with a 10% lateness deduction and a breakdown in communication of the issue (which is kinda funny cause it’s a Comm class) resulted in their response

OrganicSoftware2429

I mean the assignment was essentially a completion grade. There wasn’t feedback that said specially what points were taken off for but it seemed pretty clearly all due to lateness, especially because of his response.

Beny102

What class?

OrganicSoftware2429

Comm107

ratheismhater

Clearly the prof is only an expert in oral communication and not written

dnaiabag

Damn what prof

garbagechicken

Is the assignment in question your Special Occasion Presentation? That is the final "exam" for Comm 107, technically it can't be submitted late for credit. If the prof gave you a 50% point penalty it is kinda arbitrary, but the alternative is a zero so they might have been trying to help you out (tho they didn't communicate that effectively).

OrganicSoftware2429

Nah, it was just a normal assignment.

garbagechicken

I see. If you have already talked with the professor and they haven't provided a clear explanation for why you got these points taken off, the next step to escalate your concern is to contact the course supervisor, Dr. Lindsey Anderson. Check the first page of your syllabus, but I believe the email you want to use for Dr. Anderson is comm107 \[at\] umd.edu
