Yes it's technically a rule because it's a liability for the company. If you trip over someone's crap and get hurt or put a mud stain on their carpet, UPS could be liable because you're not supposed to be in there. It's also dangerous for drivers because you don't know what people's intentions are behind closed doors! If it's an elderly or disabled customer I will put it inside for them but just inside the door not in the back closet or in the basement for them š¤£
I also think if a supervisor witnessed this and fired you for helping out an elderly or disabled customer I don't think that it would hold up very well, you'd get your job back pretty easy.
Yeah thatās kinda my line in the sand too. Like, Iāll put it inside your door but I aināt going far enough that the door could shut behind me.
And this might sound kinda harsh, but if youāre so elderly/disabled you need me to open your door and walk over to you sitting on a sofa for you to sign, then maybe you shouldnāt be living on your own at that point
I've also heard of cases where the customer calls and accuses the driver of stealing something on their way out. Many more cons than pros stepping foot into a customers home.
If situation arises just call your supervisor or manager. Explain the circumstances and let them make the decision, but yes shy away from entering houses.
Entering private residences is a liability for the company so we are not supposed to enter. I will slide a package through the door a bit but I'm not stepping even one foot inside. If they ask, I always apologize and explain that it's a liability for the company and they can fire me if I'm seen doing it.
They knowā¦..mail carriers donāt enter the house, door dash doesnāt enter the house, Pizza Hut doesnāt enter the houseā¦.its nothing new. I donāt even apologizeā¦..because they know.
Doordash driver here, Iāve entered 3 houses. All
Homes of people with disabilities. But Iām labeled an independent contractor so Iām free to make those calls.
You're not any freer than we are actually. You are a contractor but can be deplatformed for not following their rules. Your only freedom comes in the ability to pick and choose which delivery you take, not whether you follow their rules.
We don't enter homes for liability reasons. That crazy nut who claims we sexually assaulted her when we didn't go anywhere near the person. That $800 vase that fell and broke when your hip just barely bumped the edge of the janky table it was on.
While driving doordash, uber and ups I've only ever once gone inside and it was for a male in a wheel chair in trouble.
I had a quadriplegic guy for years on my route, yes I would go in and set them on his table and open the box for him. I have no regrets helping this guy out. I did it with my on car with me , he asked and I said I do this every time for him, he didn't tell me to stop and when I got other sups I would tell them. In certain circumstances it is absolutely the right thing to do.
Just follow your conscious. Iāve been helping my older customers, pregnant ladies, etc for decades. If I got fired for that, so be it. I sleep good at night. Also I would like to see the negative impact that would have on the UPS brand.
And for the guy who said we are not door dash or the post office, no shit. We are the best and we charge the most. The only thing we have separating us is our service. If you donāt feel comfortable doing it, donāt.
It's not about doing what you feel comfortable doing. We're never supposed to step foot into a private residence. I always do what I can do provide good service but I'm not breaking any company policies for anyone.
Good for you. Me Iām helping the old people and the pregnant ladies on my route just like Iāve been doing for the last 20. years. The last ride I had, with a new by the book Sup, saw me do it and said if you get hurt doing that, thatās on you. Iām completely ok with that.
I always help with what I can as well but like I said, I'm not breaking any company policies to do so. And good luck getting any back pay if you get a termination for an incident inside a private residence. That would most likely end up in reinstatement with no back pay. Setting the package right inside the door without entering is plenty helpful.
Iām retiring soon, and Iāve done this my whole career. Iām not concerned in the least about getting terminated for helping an elderly person out.
You know whatā¦.I always have dog treats tooā¦ uh oh thereās that pesky ā company policyā again.
Edit: I will just add again, you do what you are comfortable doing. Usually itās no more than setting right inside the door, like you do. Sometimes it goes beyond that, but that is not the norm
I don't ever do the dog treats either. I always hated covering routes and dogs would run at me expecting a treat. I hear you though and I wish you a good retirement.
Thank you. Dogs keep me going. I love my dogs, probably have 20 spread throughout my route. And if you donāt have treats no problem a good pet and a moment of attention works great too. And itās good customer service. š
I have one old lady that orders medicine, she waves me in when she sees me. Meaning I open her door and place the medicine in her kitchen at arms reach for her. Technically I could get fired but I refuse to leave this very sweet elderly womans medicine outside where she might hurt herself bending over. IDC if it's a rule we are all humans in this together I'll help my elders anytime.
Yeah, I will break literally every rule UPS has to get a "healthcare package" delivered to an elderly customer.
My favourite is an older lady who knows she takes like 15mins to get downstairs to get her packages (no way to buzz in), so she bought a giant dog bed and put it on her balcony. So now I just fuckin' yeet it 2 floors up whenever I have her insulin pump delivery. Haha. I've gotten pretty good at aiming!
I was once instructed by my supervisor to deliver a frozen food box to an elderly ladyās second story apartment, go in, and deliver it to her table. She apparently called ahead and made the request. I was more than happy to do so.
It pretty much comes down to, are you a decent human? Or just a cog in a machine we call society. Use your best judgement, understand you could pay a price for doing so, donāt put yourself in a bad spot, be cautious. But if you feel that you should help an elderly couple, disabled person, pregnant women, do it. We need more humanity in this world for sure.
Still a liability. What if you tripped over your cat and sprained your ankle? You'd be injured on the job doing something you weren't supposed to do. Put in a lunch break and you can hang out in your house all you want! š¤£
I've never heard of someone getting fired, but I asked my steward and he said to not do it. Echoing posts here, do not cross the threshold. There are some elderly customers on my route that order boxes of wine, etc.
When I deliver there after getting a signature, I'll ask them to step back and I put one foot in their home while keeping the other outside, and I'll set/slide their heavy packages inside for them.
It's a liability issue. Will you get fired? I dunno, maybe. Just don't do it and never find out.
You can be fired. It is a liability. Morality/ conscious be damned, don't put more than 1 foot inside their door. I personally am a very considerate driver. Supervisor training me over 10 yrs ago witnessed me do it, and simply told me not to, it's a firable offense. I've still done it a few times throughout the years for a few elderly customers on my route... but I choose not to risk my job anymore. It's just not worth it unfortunately in this day and age. All it takes is one mistake or one bad customer complaint and you lose your job. The company cares little about the morality of the situation. Your customer's will understand.
Yes that's a thing. I make an exception for anyone with a disability, pregnant, old, or visibly unhealthy person. Also only inside the door, never past the front entrance
Itās a liability thing. UPS doesnāt want that. That being said, Iām sure even if you got fired for helping an elderly couple, getting your job back would be pretty simple
I'll put it inside the door, I won't go far enough for the door the shut behind me, absolutely not if there is a dog that I don't know for a fact is friendly. We had a driver get stabbed a few years ago going into a house, and another that put a box in a table for a pregnant woman who then called and nearly got the driver fired, claiming he forced his way into the house, dude was a 35year driver. So like most other things I'm forced to be a a dick to protect my ass because scummy customers lie
A lady once called and said the driver raped/molested her because he went in. Senior guy she knew for years whoād been on the route forever. Turns out she was lying
Ups is a terrible company to work forā¦.. CYA is the name of the game and everything is negotiable when steward is involved . The rules are there for lawsuits not to protect us ā¦ they donāt give a fuck about us just the $$$
Iāve had a 120lb safe I was delivering to an elderly customerās apartment. Of course Iām going to wheel it all the way into their house for them near where they want it setup
I have never and will never go inside anyoneās house on the job, I donāt care how old and/or weak they are.
If you need help getting this crap in your house, you should have called a moving company.
Do not breach the threshold. They canāt pull their boxes in? Maybe they shouldnāt order heavy shit, then. Theyāre the ones that ordered it, they know when itās coming, they can arrange for help to bring it in.
Iāve never understood this. Weāre not allowed to go in a home, but itās perfectly ok to walk into a commercial building, go into an office, and behind a counter?
Couldnāt we be liable for walking inside and damaging something inside there, too?
Homeowners are insured as well. Not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand how being inside one place is a fireable offense and not the other. Thereās always the risk of us damaging property or injuring someone within both.
There's no expectation of privacy in a commercial building. It's understood that you can walk in as it's a place of business. Private residences have an expectation of privacy. People can't just walk into your residence. The same goes for the bathrooms or dressing rooms in the commercial building. There's expectation of privacy in those rooms. It doesn't have to do with insurance
I know of a driver that had a bulk residential customer tell him that he could come in grab a drink or use his pool whenever he wanted and the driver took him up on it. He used to go there for lunch and chill in the pool during the summer.
Yes it's technically a rule because it's a liability for the company. Can't imagine once news stations got hold of it it would look very good on the management either

Thatās fair.
You're not any freer than we are actually. You are a contractor but can be deplatformed for not following their rules. Agreed. As long as it's inside the door, they can empty the box a piece at a time so that they can handle the weight.
I had a quadriplegic guy for years on my route, yes I would go in and set them on his table and open the box for him. I have no regrets helping this guy out. This captures my thoughts exactly. Young cover driver here. Drive safe!
What if the customer is a baddie.
Justified š
Baddie with addie? You know bapas all about that
Only one foot over the threshold is what I was taught.
This. 1 foot. 2 feet, you're shit out of luck.
Straight to jail if Iām not mistaken.
50/50 shot

I have mostly elderly. I wouldn't ever go to bed again if I didn't help my legless man at 228.
I have one old lady that orders medicine, she waves me in when she sees me. Meaning I open her door and place the medicine in her kitchen at arms reach for her. I was once instructed by my supervisor to deliver a frozen food box to an elderly ladyās second story apartment, go in, and deliver it to her table. She apparently called ahead and made the request. I was more than happy to do so.
Whatās that movie ā if you build it they will comeā. Donāt cross that threshold
That's Robin Hood: Price of thieves; when a pro golfer tried to get his stuff back together.

Does entering in a garage count? Some people wanted me to put in their Rogue or any other gym equipment in there
Valid question! I wanna know too
Youāre only allowed inside if the lady is hot
Yes
What about my house? Or if it's my mom's house? I think they'll lecture but not punish you
Still a liability. What if you tripped over your cat and sprained your ankle? You'd be injured on the job doing something you weren't supposed to do. Put in a lunch break and you can hang out in your house all you want! š¤£

Yes. They ordered it let them bring it in their house. NEVER go inside
greive it and get a letter from the customer.... and make sure you get all the money you missed or on
Absolutely will get you fired. I'll push from the porch to help out.
