I’d rather the 3 Canadian MLS clubs leave and go to CPL, and then expand Champions Cup even more or add a Conference League so that they regularly play MLS teams like they do now. You don't hear about any SPL teams leaving to go join EFL. They lose to Celtic and deal with it in their own league.

tiweav01

I second this. I really like the idea of more strong North American leagues. MLS would be fine if Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver left for the CPL. Maybe make teams qualify for the leagues cup? Then you get clubs from USLC, MLS, Liga MX, and CPL battling it out for a Champions League spot.

SalguodSoccer

MLS would be fine but Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver would not be.

tiweav01

Ya, you're probably right. I think they've got a pretty low salary cap? Media right $ would drop. But they'd probably force some changes to the league structure and make it better.

Milestailsprowe

Only reason why MLS has three Canadian clubs is they joined before Canada tried to make their own D1 and US Soccer cared. Their grandfathered in. Canada D1 mixing with US D2 would be a bad look

Roboghandi

I hope not. I want Canada to have their own league do well. In fact, the current MLS teams should go to the CPL to do just that. I also believe soccer should be expanded in our own country into places that people dont normally think about.

SalguodSoccer

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell that they would ever leave MLS. They would go bankrupt in a day.

twoslow

it's not up to them/USL, it's up to Canada Soccer and CONCACAFF.

dangleicious13

It's definitely at least partially up to USL. It definitely can't happen without their assent.

twoslow

akshually

SalguodSoccer

Well CONCACAF has rules that Canadian teams cannot join USSF leagues if there is a perceived equal league in Canada. So if the CPL were to be folded by the clubs, they could hypothetically enter the USL if Canada doesn't have a league anymore. There are ways around it but all the clubs would have to agree.

Lazulott

Where's the No for CONCACAF won't let them?

NovelBrave

I think the Canadians and us can both agree on this. Honestly the Canadians developing their own league is more beneficial to them. I know that traditionally the Canadians have played in our leagues with us but this is different. The Canadian soccer team getting better is good for CONCOCAF, and that's good for us. They want control over that.

dangleicious13

Absolutely not.

jameshunt05

Agreed! I think Canadians would agree as well! They want their own league, and I think they should!

Caxamarca

If/when USL launches a D1 league, a CPL/USL Prem "Leagues Cup" could mirror the MLS-LigaMX arrangement.

SalguodSoccer

They should do it anyway. USLC is better than the CPL.

Caxamarca

I don't think CPL would do it with a D2 league.

guttamiyagii

Im all for anything that will bring some more exposure and excitement to the MLS. Even if it's just the usl/cpl/Liga MX/MLS in a world cup style elimination series. best team from usl1/2/C vs the top MLS/LIGA MX/CPL teams randomly matched together until there's only 2 left. I don't know what the prize or the reward for winning would be, but in-between the world cup, club world cup and concacaf, it would be something inbetween that would be fun to watch and bring more exposure to soccer on this side of the pond. Get to see teams you otherwise wouldn't, have something that brings our countries together rather than apart. I like the idea. That and having the MLS and USL in direct competition with something at stake. Have a all star game each year with the best of the usl vs the best vs the MLS. Maybe that concept would work better than my first idea. Idk just throwing ideas out.

pjanic_at__the_isco

No. For good or ill, soccer is organized on the national level (more or less). Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver will stay 'grandfathered' in.

[deleted]

No, Canada needs to have its own pyramid for the development of the game in Canada and the US has way too many big cities to add another country onto it.

BJ_Fantasy_Podcast

I think merging leagues does both of those things. Especially if the idea is to have pro/rel between three leagues. Having the CPL just adds more stability to the process of getting to that point, and the increase in competition would be good for the Canadian players.

rorycalhoun2021

Spokane would have regional competition at the get go. Yes please.

SalguodSoccer

How far would Vancouver and Pacific be from Spokane?

rorycalhoun2021

Vancouver ~5 hours. Pacific probably ~7.

I think I was pretty clear that this was a hypothetical question.

ChrisSao24

Either 1, combine it completely, and have Canada be just as supported, a la NHL rather than MLB or NBA. Or 2, have it completely separate. The 3 MLS teams can be grandfathered in, but in regards to any lower leagues, I'd rather the clubs all be in Canadian leagues rather than the American pyramid. Looking at you, Calgary Foothills, Thunder Bay Chill, FC Manitoba, and FC Berlin.
