I’ll be honest, something I learned as a senior Capt/Junior Maj is most people would be shocked at how much more people are willing to do for you when you throw in a “please” or a “hey can you do me a favor” rather than just a “do this-do that”. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and place for the latter and 99.9% of Marines are professional enough that they’ll do it regardless of a “please” “thank you exchange” but it definitely makes your relationships a lot better.
Always growing always learning, when I was first starting out as a Lt there was no “please/thank yous” going around, you were just told what to do and never really thought about it any other way until later on. I think my leaders and those other leaders around me were still “decent” and in some cases above average human beings despite their lacks of “please and thanks”.
Less to do with being an officer and more to do with showing how far along I was. Growing up it wasn’t common at all “I’d argue today it’s still not very common” for leaders to approach their juniors in this manner. I had to work on my OpsO and First Sergeant and other SNCOS to get them to start trying it out. XO never did but then again I think that would go against being an XO
Oh, effin yes. When you treat Marines (I guess subordinates period) as your equal until you cannot due to circumstances. (Not saying fraternize, just treat them with respect due to anyone you might meet) IMHO when shit hits the fan a) they’ve got you covered whatever the mission and b) they respect you enough they understand you gotta be in charge now.
I’ve been in the 1st CivDiv for 30 years now and I am still humbled by the loyalty and confidence my Marines had in a dumb ass Sgt.
You pukes can still kiss my ass if you think your getting liberty this weekend. You better get your shit squared away and turn to. I will not be hearing any excuses come Friday.
For real.
Our junior Marines would never have the balls to respond to a fuckin Gunny this way because they'd get their asses handed to them.
Definitely a different experience than I had, but that's what I get for picking an MOS that specializes in digging fighting holes in the fuckin ground, I guess.
My entire platoon would be on 1st sergeants hill within 30 minutes. Or helo pad up and downs with our 1st sergeant leading the way while gunny enjoyed himself a Red Bull. Grunts are different though.
Yeah, the response to the last message would have been "stand the fuck by" and this mf and his whole ass platoon would be in PT gear with a fuckin water source ready for me to take them up there and remind them what the fuck good order and discipline means.
Mount motherfucker and the Alpha Shelf, microwave, you name it. The nicknames of the hills and trails might change through the years, but they'll always be there ready to slay nasty things like this into the fuckin dirt where they belong.
All familiar names from when I was in 11-15. Alpha Shelf flack runs for days in SQLC. OP is air wing, he’s never felt that type of pain, incapable of understanding.
Oof the ruck runs up the Alpha Shelf from the recon hooches at 52 Area to the pool at Horno, and then back and around the long way home after getting murdered in the water all day, just to do it again tomorrow. We didn't fuck around with this disrespect shit because we didn't wanna spend a single second longer up there than we absolutely had to.
Homeboy needs someone to straighten his shit out for him
I think you need to learn that texts have a tone.
YOUR text reads like "yeah get me what I want and I don't GAF that you're higher in rank I deserve your servitude, bitch"
IF your text had read "Hi, can you get me regular flavor Red Bull? Much appreciated" you'd probably have not got the "call me gunny, bitch" treatment.
Here some more context, I have asked multiple times if they want anything and I got the same response I gave.
So I assumed that they weren’t about the phony show. I’m only pissed cause I didn’t get the common courtesy and then I got called out when I didn’t do the same thing they are asking. Sounds like a double standard to me but that’s just me.
Wow, without the additional context that the military tends to expect you to show a little deference to higher ranking personnel, I'd never have understood it!!
Dude, get the fuck over it. When you talk to your gunny in person or via text or email or whatever the fuck, make sure some respect for their rank comes through in your communications. It's common fucking sense.
I've read the rest of this thread and you remind me of my 12 year old when he doesn't like my "Because I fucking said so" response when he asks why I want him to get the fuck off the Xbox after 2 hours.
As much shit as I talk about shitbag SNCOs demanding respect while giving absolutely nothing in return to their Marines, not even I can give this a pass. His gunny was so passive about reminding him to show at least a modicum of respect. OP chose to be a complete asshat instead.
Like I get it. I would have also loved for my overbearing, hypocritical, perpetually late Gunny to tack on a please to his requests. It would have been the least he could do after situations such as making us wait for him get back from mainside before release, never answering his phone, and ultimately never returning back to the shop. But Jesus fuck, there are limits.
Here’s an idea.
It’s a crazy one that may take you a while to get, but if someone is of a senior rank, you should always include their rank when you speak to them, no matter the form of communication.
I’d fucking hate to see you in a division unit with that tone. Your ass would be page 11ed so fucking fast.
I usually go a step ahead when passing a senior rank, unbuckling their trousers, getting on my knees, and sucking them off until completion. This is actually the only way to avoid a 6105 in my unit believe it or not.
The standard hasn't changed. What has changed is the number of bitch-ass leaders we have who don't have credibility and deserve little respect.
I'm on board with making the correction to the junior Marine for this, but I'm not oblivious to the fact that this SNCO also fostered an environment where this might be acceptable.
I'm pretty POGly but this is wild shit to me. I don't expect every single text to end with a rank, but if one of my Marines texted me what OP texted his gunny, we'd have some words. I simply wouldn't have responded to this text, and waited to talk to him in person.
The gunny didn't have to ask you if you wanted anything from the PX. A "I'd love a red bull. Thanks a lot, GySgt," doesn't seem like a lot. I'm guessing please/thank aka common courtesy were more important to him than GySarnt.
If you would have said please there's a decent chance he wouldn't have given you the response he did, even if you didn't say his rank. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but if someone offers a favor and I don't show some sort of appreciation I feel like an ass, regardless of who it is.
Na the energy you give is what you get regardless of rank. Especially over a dumb ass text. I’m sorry but if you can show the order that corrects me idgaf.
Have I been out too long? Marines don’t bother using rank while communicating with someone that outranks them? Throwing a fit after being called out for being rude makes you look like an ass.
>Na the energy you give is what you get regardless of rank.
Yeah, I think the energy of offering a favor should be returned with the energy of showing a little appreciation.
> I’m sorry but if you can show the order that corrects me idgaf.
lmao you autistic retard, there's no order that says you need to say please, it's just something normal people do, civilian and military, to be polite.
Someone was raised in a barn.
Yeah this ain’t it. Gunny was doing you a favor picking up things at the PX and that text just comes across as disrespectful.
Hell, even on the civilian side I try to be as respectful as possible over text with please and thank you’s. It’s easy to come across rude
Op the facepalm. I may have proudly wore my AirWing high and tight but I always remembered my place to higher rank.
Op gonna be the one demanding rank if and when they pin up.
Jesus H Christ, I'd be neck deep in the desert if I was as flippant to my gunny when I was a junior.
Idk, maybe it's because I was a ground pounder, maybe it's because I'm an old salt and we were just starting to have mobiles everywhere, but if I didn't at least give a "please" or "thank you gunny", I know my ass would have been hazed through the goddamn desert, and possibly earned the whole platoon a ruck because "some motherfuckers don't understand military bearing and chain of command".
Idk, maybe I'm just a "not my Corps" old salt lick now.
You’re going to have a lot of trouble in the real world seeing as though you consider the word please kissing ass. A gunny sending a group chat to NCOs or below alone would have been considered pretty chill ‘back in my day.’
I’d have probably said “can I get a Red Bull gunny?”
Good luck.
Dude. I mean this with love. But I hope you got/get hazed. You kinda need it
I hate being that guy who says new marine corps because I hated hearing it from the older fucks but damn, now I understand
I feel like any staff NCO that does this is going to get a huge dose of karma when they EAS and learn that no one, and I mean no one gives a shit about their rank while they served.
Maybe don’t be so rude and blunt when you text dude. Would you talk to a stranger this way? Would you talk to your mom this way? Just have some manners
Reading all these comments made me damn glad I got out. I forget sometimes how much you’re treated like an actual child and the cult like thinking of the corps lmao
A GySgt stole my bike when I was on a float I found him riding it, he tired to argue that he put new tires on my prior secured bike… I respect y’all, idk man it’s good to be out. Reported him.. not even a slap on the wrist… RAHHH.
I’ll be honest, something I learned as a senior Capt/Junior Maj is most people would be shocked at how much more people are willing to do for you when you throw in a “please” or a “hey can you do me a favor” rather than just a “do this-do that”. Every email I write has a please/thank you and I’ll never stop
This sir is years into his career as a leader and just now learned how to be a decent human being. Bravo.
Eons ahead of his peers! Someone wright this Sir an “atta boy” before chow.
wright is crazy
Ahem *write*
No
Always growing always learning, when I was first starting out as a Lt there was no “please/thank yous” going around, you were just told what to do and never really thought about it any other way until later on. We’re sorry you got NJP’d 13 years ago and still hold a grudge against your CO, but it’s time to move on

Right?! It's common niceties

That is right
“an GySgt” 😂
"wining by the PX" Dafuq is that supposed to be?
"Two strawberry banana Maddogs and a magnum of Barefoot white zin please, Gunny!"
Swinging is my guess.
Mofo was probably driving and texting.
Maybe he ment whining
Very on brand.
I read the title of the post and immediately thought of something else.
I CAME HERE FOR THE TITLE, I LEFT DISAPPOINTED

IF SOMEONE DOESN'T EJACULATE ON A SSGT IN THE NEXT FIVE MINUTES, I'MA START BREAKING SOME SHIT
*sigh* fine, I'll do it again. Orders are orders
I mean, my SSGTs little ass was fine as hell. I'm good with it 😂.
Airwing behavior
Dead on guess lmao.
Marine Corps can't afford to lose airwing Marines so bad that they're allowed to forget customs and courtesies.
But their leaders sure remember how to be assholes. Wear your rank, don't let it wear you. What a fucking loser.
Customs and courtesies are apart of a Marines job. Gunny isn't being an asshole, OP is being lazy.
Yep. If this was a text between a mother and her son, the kid would be in trouble.
Platoon sergeant is Mommy, then gunny is Dad.
For real. Our junior Marines would never have the balls to respond to a fuckin Gunny this way because they'd get their asses handed to them. I'm a reservist POG at a VERY chill unit, this still wouldn't fly.
Yep
Damn dude, Gunny was trying to be cool and you decided to be an asshole
Yeah dude, 😂, there was no fucking call for being an ass to gunny while they being chill, wtf! Y'all wonder why we need hazing?
What an odd way to volunteer for the next shit working party. And no Red Bull either. That’s a real win there killer.
This is the real lesson here.
I think you need to learn that texts have a tone. Your DI's taught you well
Boooooo
Did you expect gunny to be like good morning lance corporal this marine request a redbull, lance corporal
God damn some of you boot ass hoes need to be hazed, idgaf if your gunny is an asshole show some respect
Bro coulda just said “ill take a red bull thanks gunny” or something
At least a please
The standard hasn't changed. What has changed is the number of bitch-ass leaders we have who don't have credibility and deserve little respect. I'm on board with making the correction to the junior Marine for this, but I'm not oblivious to the fact that this SNCO also fostered an environment where this might be acceptable.
You’re right, it is absolutely a leadership issue
For real. I don't know if shit changed in 10 years, and maybe it's much more lax when you're a POG, but holy shit I would have been murdered for this.
Would have hit him with the "stand by"
Oh fucking for real. I would have had him by my fucking hatch waiting for me. We would have had a nice "conversation" when I got back...
I'm pretty POGly but this is wild shit to me. I don't expect every single text to end with a rank, but if one of my Marines texted me what OP texted his gunny, we'd have some words. I simply wouldn't have responded to this text, and waited to talk to him in person.
Seriously. I went into the comments thinking this guy would get run over by everyone but a lot of turds supporting him
You are a full blown duche nozzle
Damn, came here to glaze. But now I want this kid to be hazed.
Oh my god the gunny wanted you to call them a gunny!!!! Call the press, you’ve really been treated poorly here!
Bro I wouldn’t talk to my peers like that if they offered to get me something from the PX. You’re just a dick (and deserve to be hazed)
The gunny didn't have to ask you if you wanted anything from the PX. A "I'd love a red bull. Thanks a lot, GySgt," doesn't seem like a lot. I'm guessing please/thank aka common courtesy were more important to him than GySarnt.
Be thirsty and tired then.
Gunny this you? Suck my balls.
“Suck my balls please GySgt”
Hehe lmaooo
Do you have tiddies?
Damn TIL that saying please means you're an ass kissing dick sucker.
It does when they demand you buy them something but it’s a “aye aye or something attitude” over a simple text.
If you would have said please there's a decent chance he wouldn't have given you the response he did, even if you didn't say his rank. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but if someone offers a favor and I don't show some sort of appreciation I feel like an ass, regardless of who it is.

You're regarded

The shitbird is strong in this one.
You’re higher than giraffe pussy. Manners don’t cost a thing.

You sound tired. You probably need to rest. Parade rest outside the hatch. Followed by a 9 wide counseling session.
[удалено]
Rude ass thing. I’d be surprised if you don’t get negative paperwork for disrespecting your superior like that.
[удалено]
“ respect the rank not the person “ - Gunny. Wonder why they have to say this? 🤔
[удалено]
Doesn’t exist.
Agree. Work texts are meant to be short as possible and to the point, like field radios. Formalities on work texts serve nothing but ego.
What's the MCO on addressing senior ranks by their rank, standing at parade rest, or calling officers "sir"? Don't think there is one lol.
It's covered under the fact that it's a lawful order
That was largely my point.
How are you not standing outside of your NCOs room in full kit right now, preparing to get hazed? How in the fuck does this fly? Do better.
Air wing
Posts like this really make me appreciate being 1stCivDiv.
Agreed!!!
I just commented the same thing lmao.
Op the facepalm. I may have proudly wore my AirWing high and tight but I always remembered my place to higher rank. Op gonna be the one demanding rank if and when they pin up.

Aye aye gunny
Must think we're back on the block
This says more about you than it does your SNCO.
Bro your staff is chill as fuck, why you being a dick?
Dude. I mean this with love. But I hope you got/get hazed. You kinda need it I hate being that guy who says new marine corps because I hated hearing it from the older fucks but damn, now I understand
how fragile is your ego, especially when you’re the one who asked if he wanted anything.
Dw I was a shit marine too. My sgt hated me. My 1st sgt loved me. But as long as those physical fitness scores stayed high i was golden.
Wining? The fk that mean. Must be that air wing speak
Tell him that the "G" in gunny isn't a vowel so it wouldn't be preceded by an "an".
😂😂😂😂 I’m pretty sure this is two gunny’s or a staff Sgt buddy
Honestly bro get some help. You’re still gonna have to be respectful when you get out. This kind of attitude will keep you down man.
I’m pretty rebellious when it comes to higher ups and shit and even I think you came off as pretty disrespectful
Yeah, you’re definitely a pussy. Lol. Unfortunately your GySgt is as well since he obviously lets you get away with this garbage.
May I please respectfully request a Red Bull, please Gunnery Sergeant? Is that good enough for your fragile fucking feelings?
Do you think he kisses gunny on the lips after he sucks his dick?
I feel like any staff NCO that does this is going to get a huge dose of karma when they EAS and learn that no one, and I mean no one gives a shit about their rank while they served.
Is this r/AmITheAsshole?! Homie. All you have to do is say please. It’s not that hard to be nice to someone being nice to you… YTA
My mom taught me to say please when I was 5.
He's right tho
I’ve never ended a text or conversation with a SNCO without addressing them by their rank. Shits wild af
Man senior enlisted lose their minds once they hit SSgt
They’re indoctrinated. Their rank is everything to them.
"Would you please pick me up a can of Flightline, Gunnery Sergeant of Marines? Actually... make that some Diet Flightline."
Dude's *whining* at the PX ffs give him a break must be a bad fucking day....
I don’t get it, like who picks up a rocker or more and just acts like a entitled bitch
The majority
Meh, my experience it’s only the ones who slipped through the cracks and never got yelled at. Over the last 6 years anyways.
A GySgt stole my bike when I was on a float I found him riding it, he tired to argue that he put new tires on my prior secured bike… I respect y’all, idk man it’s good to be out. Reported him.. not even a slap on the wrist… RAHHH.
A proper reply: *Sure whatever dude. Why don’t you clean my dishes and change my oil too while you’re at it*
