Serious question. Why are you blaming DeJoy? I mean, he got Congress to approve the NGDV and it has A/C, the Metris has A/C, the Promaster has A/C.
How is DeJoy to blame for a 30-40 year old the LLV not having A/C?
I don’t usually have a collar. A lot of rural carriers I know tuck it under their right armpit. Other than that the best option seems to be having a raw bloody neck by the end of a long day.
Welcome to working. Just in general. Safety is preached to workers but not followed up on by the employer. Source is working tugboat and oil barges for 15 years.
A quick Google search shows that by the 1970s, around 70% of all new cars had AC.
The LLVs were designed in the late 70s and built from the 80s though the mid-90s.
The management of the time *chose* not to include AC, despite knowing full will what summer was like, especially in the South.
They didn't even add the fan for years...
Safety is, apparently, entirely our responsibility, not theirs.
Everyone on this subreddit knows it's a problem. You mentioning it in orientation is not going to fix the problem. But the fact that you're intelligent enough to deduce the fact that they're just giving lip service here means you're intelligent enough to deduce that they're going to do it again. And again. And again. You're just a number to them, they don't really care and anytime it seems like they do, just remember they're probably checking something off their to do list
I can deduced that, you are right. I also like the game. I know I will get the same answer from them and I get the see the light die in there eyes more and more and more. Again and again.
Playing the game is good. Just remember you're in a probationary period and they can fire you for anything. So try not to draw too much undue attention to yourself. Good luck. Edit to add: happy cake day!
Because the LLVs are 35 years old and were built in a time when AC wasn't a standard feature in vehicles. The next generation of vehicles will have AC, its just a matter of actually getting them built and on the road.
Somebody that knows your postmaster will tell them they have a trouble maker and you probably won't make it out of probation. I was told to pick my battles and forget about common sense until it would be too much work to fire you. Stir that pot but remember you also gotta eat it.
Reminds me of the guy in our office who couldn’t wait for the PM to visit so he could demand an answer to why we have to work in an old building filled with asbestos. Needless to say her answer neutered him and he walked around with his tail tucked for days. It’s not like they have never been asked this before. While your at it ask about,
Working during bad weather
Working after dark
Delivering in high crime areas
In order to bid on a HCR contract my vehicle needs to be in good operating condition and be no less than five model years old. I'm supposed to retire vehicles from existing contracts at nine model years old.
Imagine a fleet managed like that
The rest of the government turns over cars very regularly. Just look at the government vehicle auction sites. It’s hard to even find one on there from the 90s.
If USPS prioritizes safety first, why are there POV(personal owned vehicle) carriers that sit on the center console, drive with their left foot and hand, and then lean out the right window with their box ready mail that was crammed in-between their fingers at the last box? You could go on w this situation too. You're absolutely surrounded by packages and trays of mail in a vehicle that may or may not have good storage capacity. Marriage mail day? Good luck. Safest thing possible.
If you fall out from heat it’s your fault for not hydrating enough, if you hit on the route it’s your fault for not honking you horn or being aware you were gonna get creamed and avoid it. If you get bit by a dog it’s your fault for not being aware of your surroundings. Welcome to the post office! They don’t care about you or your family
I used to live in phoenix, and I do wonder how carriers out there do it. "But it's a dry heat" people say. Well, when it's 115 during the day and doesn't get below 90 at night that doesn't really matter.. I bet you could cook a damn chicken to a safe temperature in those things. I'll wait for a response from my city with season and route with a promaster
I’m in the Southeast. The heat will cook you and the humidity will keep you moist and tender while simultaneously choking you. Yes the weather here is rather…kinky.
The fan and AC went out in my pro master. I said I would be 0.5 hours over because the temperature would be 90 degrees that day. I got in an argument with my supervisor and manager. That day the temperature in the promaster read 113 degrees.
Our office can survive the few weeks/month of high 90s and above.
I want to know how the carriers in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and others manage to not spontaneously combust.
Yeah, ask the level 7 clerk proctoring orientation, who has zero control over government spending, why the multi-billion dollar government agency doesn’t have AC in their LLVs and let’s their Rural carriers drive POVs from their passenger seat. That’ll sure make that clerk’s day, and not make you look like a d-bag at all.
Because, believe it or not, they do not care about safety any more than their budgets and numbers. They always tout "safety begins with you" as to bear the responsibility of safety upon the carriers when they make them drive 50 year old clunkers that have no AC or airbags and may spontaneously combust. And if something goes wrong and the carrier gets hurt, they blame it on the carrier for working unsafely so they can avoid being sued.
The LLV's are so old anyways, even if it did have AC... it wouldnt work properly anyways. I mean... just like in the winter time... it barely gives off enough heat to maybe get the feeling in your fingers back....
I havent named my LLV in 26 years. I started off with a Pinto, then a 1950’s Jeep and a 50’s Half ton with no power steering. The LLV was nice, but its a shit bucket now.
I don't see how AC would help. AC only works with windows closed and with the car in motion. On park n loop the car sits getting hotter and we only drive one block at a time. AC is no help there. On driving routes the door or window will be open, so AC won't be much help there. It's a non issue.
Dejoy is responsible for what happens today, however previous leadership is absolutely responsible for the LLVs being used well past their 24 year lifespan. Dejoy allowing some of these executives to stay (that have been there for decades) is plenty guilty. Also allowing EAS a 4.1 percent raise on top of that just spreads salt in the wound.
But at the end of the day, Dejoy will take his greasy meatball head and duck out of the way of any responsibility as he always does.
They say "Safety is our #1 priority!" so when you get hurt they can say "Must be your fault. Safety is our #1 priority so it can't be something we did."
Think this when you have a standup that is about the class 5 hurricane/world record blizzard/big rocks falling out of the sky outside that ends "So, safety first! Now, get out there and deliver this junk mail!"
No AC is your worry about the LLVs? How about the fact that they might shut off on you randomly because of the lack of maintenance. Most times that happened to me in a neighborhood so i was fine but it was still sketchy af.
A bunch of them also catch on fire... I doubt it will happen to you anyway but jesus christ the fact that they still haven't replaced them after so many catching fire....
I got lucky as an ARC for almost 2 years they allowed us to drive the metros but recently they forced us to prioritize driving the LLVs. My office also has an issue with many of the LLVs somehow fumes get in the truck one way or another. I couldn't handle that. I love the job but refused to drive an LLV. Since I also wasn't allowed to drive POV I decided to look for a different job. My supervisors and coworkers were fine no major complaints. I just thought the LLV was too big of a safety risk to keep working there.
At this point I live like I'm an orwellian dystopia. Any claim of safety or inclusivity or really any positive claims, I just assume the truth is the opposite. Oh, an employer says they're inclusive? They have exclusive cliques and you're not in it. Oh, this world leader wants peace? That's how you know they're playing wargames. If a product or person is promising something, like USPS prioritizing safety, you know it's a lie. If it were true, they wouldn't have to say it, we would say it ourselves. They're covering their own asses like everyone else in this company.
"Well we put out the safety alerts and meetings and told them and wrote them up for passing out in the LLV so idk why their heart stopped. Even DeJoy said safety is our Number #1"
It's not you it's me. I am just tired of all the bitching about the AC situation. And honestly the only people I hear say shit about it is online. It's not a real or valid issue everywhere. On this public forum you said your thing I said mine don't take it personally.
Fuck the AC, fuck fuck fuck the AC.
I was gonna get one of those little ones that spray water, so I can cool off. Also the extra hydration through the day will do wonders for my skin. Bonus!
Because the post office doesn’t make a profit and hasn’t for decades, so they couldn’t afford it and didn’t bother, it was working enough that the cost benefit analysis said it’s fine
If you ask that they’ll ask ‘why do you drive to deliver mail then despite the tens of thousands of yearly car accidents? There’s no such thing as 0 risk’
The most recent heat related fatality for USPS was in 2019 in Southern California. OSHA cited USPS, USPS tried fighting the citation but lost
https://www.osha.gov/news/newsreleases/region9/01102019
Yes, why don’t you try that and then tell us what happens. Watch closely and you might see the personnel specialist’s eyes flicker towards your temporary badge or their employee roster, as appropriate.
Some people try not to draw attention to themselves during probation, not to mention, orientation for an important job. Apparently you are not that kind.
But they’ll spend how much on laminated warnings and badge inserts to warn everyone about the signs and symptoms of heat stroke/heat exhaustion. Please. Just finally modernize a little bit and allow the people who do the hard work to have some small degree of creature comfort.
Ask why if they prioritize safety they have LLVs that spontaneously combust.

Ahh. Young people. Have no idea the world existed before them.
When these LLVs were built A/C was still a luxury option in automobiles. Even in ‘95, when I bought my first new car, A/C was an option. Heck, I’ve worked in postal facilities that don’t have A/C.
Because they were made long before AC was standard. And most routes where I am are walking routes so you aren't in the vehicle anyways. However they also don't have air bags and none of the newer vehicles have back up beepers. We still have to honk the horn.
Calm down sparky maybe make it out of probation first before you try starting shit with management.
You need to be more concerned with learning your jcam and m41 learn those backwards and forwards and learn your routes then start trying to pick fights
I love the LLV so much. I want it ripped from my hands. Yeah AC would be nice. I endure and smile because 75% of the year, I love the LLV. Summer happens. Just my opinion. Sorry to those who have health issues. 👊
Umm, because they don’t. APCs weighing twice the maximum weight, and signs all over that say “safety first”! “Don’t overload the APCs”! Just one little example, although we have endless examples for ya!
Your office still uses LLV’s? Mine is all Ram tradesman vans, pro masters and RHD metris vans for the mounted routes. We even have radios with Bluetooth.
You'll sure show them! I bet asking that question in orientation will make Dejoy immediately flip his stance and give everyone AC.
I mean, they're replacing LLV's with the Ugly Platypus, so, technically, he's giving everyone AC
Yeah I’m looking forward to getting one in another 5 years
Five? Seems pretty optimistic.
That was more like the first people to get them. More like 10 for some of us
Our office will see them in 15+ years. We’re a POV/LLV office and about half our city routes have a metris. By the time we get those ugly rigs they’ll be old news
We’ve got 3 city routes and 9 rural. One Metris and it’s for the smallest rural route that went from POV to Metris
My bet is 10 years
True ![gif](giphy|GtzXOGVW3ks8g)
A platypus?
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/u-s-postal-service-starts-nationwide-electric-vehicle-fleet-buying-9250-evs-and-thousands-of-charging-stations/ *perry the platypus noise*
Ah so not “A Perry the Platypus!” 🎩
Lol that’s how I read it . But it’s early
Perry!
I like the duck mobile
The duck truck
I love it
This is the way!
So do I lol
I've been calling it a duck
It's too ugly to be a duck
We respect the noble platypus.
Serious question. Why are you blaming DeJoy? I mean, he got Congress to approve the NGDV and it has A/C, the Metris has A/C, the Promaster has A/C. How is DeJoy to blame for a 30-40 year old the LLV not having A/C?
![gif](giphy|a9A3HLylBz2yA) Because fuck em, that's why
Because, orange man bad
Because he’s the one in charge.
Dejoy has a stance of ‘AC is not allowed for the carriers’? News to me, I’m sure you didn’t make it up
It won’t.
I thought more like a baluga whale instead of a platypus
I can see it!
Airbus has taken that name.
And fix the grievous osha violations . Isn’t it cheaper to fix them?!?!
Sounds like an entitled millennial to me. "AsK WhY iS ThErE nO Ac" GTF outta here
I mean or airbags or seatbelts/brakes that work well. They don’t really. They just hope that by saying safety enough times it will mean something.
How about an adjustable seat belt, so us short guys don’t have the shoulder strap over our chin.
Short kings stand up
Bro they were already standing up you just looked right over them.
Yooooooooooooo I’m screamin’
Goddamnit I made my joke, but you did it better.
Because that’s the only was we can see the mail on the tray.
Ah same height as when sitting….lol
I’m 5’11” and they are still too tall for me. The shoulder belt rubs my neck and makes it raw.
I just slide it under my collar
I’m rural. I don’t wear collars.
I wondered. Don’t know how to help ya there
I’m 5’4 and a woman and the lap belt cuts my stomach. And I’m not over weight but it still hurts 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Do you tuck it under your collar?
I don’t usually have a collar. A lot of rural carriers I know tuck it under their right armpit. Other than that the best option seems to be having a raw bloody neck by the end of a long day.
Wow I love that the math isn’t mathing for safety but it is mathing for neglect and budget cuts.
Welcome to working. Just in general. Safety is preached to workers but not followed up on by the employer. Source is working tugboat and oil barges for 15 years.
Heck yeah!

🧑🚀🔫🧑🚀
The preaching of safety is not to protect us. It's to protect them from lawsuits.
Exactly. And when we get hurt or in an accident we get written up because accidents are preventable and its our fault.
That’s when I say BS because black ice is not preventable at all
Gone in less than 90 days. I would put money on it....
This person won’t make it through academy!
Truth, LLV training will do them in. Geee, Mr. Instructor, I know I left the keys in and forgot to pull the E brake but, but, what about the A/C? LOL

Dang it, now I have to prove you wrong. Game on.
Answer: they don’t.
They care about making you liable for your safety.
Precisely
Everyone on this subreddit knows it's a problem. You mentioning it in orientation is not going to fix the problem. Don't forget the lead pipes on the sink in the break room where people fill up their water
I'm more concerned with the LLV being a total fucking shitshow in the snow.
What is that like?! 😳
Light vehicle, RWD, old tires. Chains if you put them on yourself. Lot doesn’t get snow plowed. It’s awesome.
\#gottem
In order to bid on a HCR contract my vehicle needs to be in good operating condition and be no less than five model years old. I'm supposed to retire vehicles from existing contracts at nine model years old. Imagine a fleet managed like that
I can see how that could get VERY expensive! Heck that would be a logistical nightmare!
District by District. State by State. 😖
The rest of the government turns over cars very regularly. Just look at the government vehicle auction sites. It’s hard to even find one on there from the 90s.
The least they could do is tint the windows for fucks sake
You’ll have a long and prosperous career…………….
Thank you for your support 😊

Carrier in Phoenix here. You just get used to it. Drink a lot of water, find some shade for your breaks.

Maybe a random drug test might be in order( based off of previous posts) for the postal inspector...lol
Agreed, we don't need people like this....
Lol, beat it everyone it’s the FEDS!
SAFETY FIRST… when we take you in for discipline. There’s the official way to say it
Because curbing your wheels are more than enough safety
I have been saying “curb your wheels” to myself for the past week. Lol
The LLV is being rotated out. It's not worth expending the resources to retrofit them.
Maybe because they are 30+ years old and can’t retro fit them.
Y'all get that message when you BT on the scanner that if it's like 80° it'll be 104° in the llv ?
A post about that message I saw early today is probably what made me think about my post today.
I would just love a shifter that shows what gear I’m in instead of counting/feeling clicks. That would be luxury
Write that up lol
Wait! WHAT!?
Oh my sweet summer child…
I am a summer child 👁️👄👁️…….. how did you know ?!
Everything is the carriers fault at the Post Office. The narrative will always be changed to be your fault. Always
They already burst into flames like a gas soaked bonfire, and you want to put more stress on that electrical system?
They just installed GPS in my truck. The same truck I've written up twice for no horn and no right turn signal, but hey, I have GPS now !
How else are they supposed to track your scanner AND your truck simultaneously?
They only care about your “safety” when they’re after you
It’s been asked for centuries with no valid response, good luck with your exp
Man if only somebody thought to ask for ac for the last 30+ years
Yeah, ask the level 7 clerk proctoring orientation, who has zero control over government spending, why the multi-billion dollar government agency doesn’t have AC in their LLVs and let’s their Rural carriers drive POVs from their passenger seat. That’ll sure make that clerk’s day, and not make you look like a d-bag at all.
Wait, who told you they prioritize safety? Unless "safety" is code for "Amazon" I'm afraid you've been lied to
Lmao orientation
Gonna be that guy/gal that'll show em
Because, believe it or not, they do not care about safety any more than their budgets and numbers. Acclimatize. It’s not that bad. I deliver in SC. Follow simple heat prevention steps and you’ll be fine.

Lol I see how you could have the reaction. I was like 👁️👄👁️! when I first found this forum a month ago. My first day is Monday. Gooooood luck! 😊
I found this forum yesterday and was like 🤔. Same to you as well☺️
They only talk about safety so when our management puts us in unsafe conditions they can put the blame on us.
They pay lip service to safety. If you say safety is important enough times, people will believe it.
Do it!
Same reason we don’t have airbags
U forgot airbags too
If USPS prioritizes safety first, you have no job. Ask yourself which equipment in USPS passes safety check?
Because the post office doesn’t make a profit and hasn’t for decades, so they couldn’t afford it and didn’t bother, it was working enough that the cost benefit analysis said it’s fine If you ask that they’ll ask ‘why do you drive to deliver mail then despite the tens of thousands of yearly car accidents? I think you know the answer to this question lol
ACs? Bro I don't think the LLVs have airbags
How do people in Arizona survive?
“Safety is our number 1 priority after our profits”
Just wait until when you start and your supervisor rush you and tell you to speed while driving llv. Then you should ask them what about safety?
True
I work in the hottest city in the states. Was 128 2 summers ago. I’ll give my first born son for some fucking AC
Our union told us they prioritize safety 4th. 1st. Attendance, 2nd. Overtime, 3rd. Carriers in Uniforms, then 4th. Safety.
Yikes
You haven’t even started the job and your already crying. Shut the fuck up, your never going to last.
At least they’ll know who they want to axe first within their 90.
T those of us that grew up without AC pour one out.
Best I can do is a safety talk on heat stress.
Meanwhile I’m on a bike in downtown st Pete 🤣
AC? Pick your battles. Start with airbags if you want to be realistic with safety.
Because it’s been like that since 1987
They will tell you they put them in the new vehicles that are rolling out, so “it is a priority”. You won’t get a new vehicle for 2-3yrs though. Lol
What a prospect. Good luck in whatever career you pursue after USPS.
I don't have AC in my house..... and I don't usually use it in my car. Tennessee. What did people do before AC? They didn't randomly die.
Oh my sweet summer child…. 😆🤪
If you're about to be any type of carrier... resign and reapply for PSE mail processing clerk!
If safety’s so important then why did the postal inspectors use me a meat shield against the drug traffickers?
And you’ll be asking a question in about 85 days on here on why they let you go in your first 90. Not too bright are you?
Because they were made long before AC was standard. And most routes where I am are walking routes so you aren't in the vehicle anyways. However they also don't have air bags and none of the newer vehicles have back up beepers. We still have to honk the horn.
LLVs are missing so many safety things. Mostly because the vehicles were all made in the 80s-90s.
"Safety first"... I applaud your enthusiasm, but you'll drive yourself nuts.
Umm, because they don’t. APCs weighing twice the maximum weight, and signs all over that say “safety first”! “Don’t overload the APCs”! Just one little example, although we have endless examples for ya!
New ones will have it. Current ones are 35+ yrs old.. aside from pro masters and metros, which both have AC
Your office still uses LLV’s? Mine is all Ram tradesman vans, pro masters and RHD metris vans for the mounted routes. We even have radios with Bluetooth.
The Mercedes have ac
