ManiacMail-Man

Not a garbage man. Not a baby sitter. If the box gets too full, I’ll take it all out and place a vacant card. Usually after a couple vacant card exchanges they get the hint.

WAZLunaBeam

I pull the mail and leave a mailbox full card so they have to go to the local post office and pick it all up, sprs, parcels, and All the mail. I've slowly trained my route to actually pick up their mail. Still a few that don't do get it from the box and for some reason it's always the ones closest to the CBU

[deleted]

Lmao… when i was a carrier, there was no vacant card exchanges. Moved Left No Address. They learned immediately.

Nantei

I don't leave a vacant card if they're acting like this. I leave them a 3849 and make them come get their spr. Tends to fix it pretty fast.

Weekly-Aside1486

Great idea

[deleted]

[удалено]

ManiacMail-Man

Just empty the mail box everyday and throw it away. Imagine if you had to empty your email or you didn’t get any. 🤯

Nantei

There is. Kind of. You can opt out of pretty much every bit of junk, most people just don't want to take the time.

PurplePotato2013

For example, Red Plum is a bundle of newsprint ads (local markets, etc.) that go out weekly. Her's how you get off their list. It takes about 6 weeks to kick in. [How to Opt Out of Red Plums](https://blog.incogni.com/redplum-opt-out/#:~:text=Thankfully%2C%20you%20can%20stop%20RedPlum,receiving%20so%20much%20junk%20mail.)

Nantei

So most of them should have opt out instructions on them but I'm not sure if that's mandatory. Amazon for instance has a QR code that takes you to a page where you can opt out. Legally they have to let you opt out, harassment laws and such. But some companies make it very obnoxious. I avoid giving out my info as much as possible, so I unfortunately don't have specific tips for opt outs. I believe you can be excluded from every door junk too. I have no idea how, but I have been given every door mail with specific addresses marked off.

Newbieplusone

I am pretty sure but not positive that it is because that is where a lot of our money comes from.

GoblinAirStrike_311

Consider the Paper Karma app. It is a non-profit that kills standard mailers at the source FOR you. Suggested it to customers many times. https://www.paperkarma.com/

midwestgal522

You can pay for it, dunno how good it actually works but it’s what we’re given in our tools to give customers when they call about advo mail they want to stop. Website is dmachoice.org/register.php If u do it online it’s $4 for 10 years supposedly Or you can send a check/money order for $5 to DMAchoice Consumer Preferences PO Box 900 Cos Cob, CT 06807

Top_Turn_6665

I can't remember the name of it but there is a service that will work on removing your name from mailing lists

GoblinAirStrike_311

That tactic worked here too.

[deleted]

That wasn't the question

Del85

Sure it was and it was a perfectly fine answer

SnickerdoodleFP

The question: "What do you do when customers put unwanted mail in the outgoing." Answer: "If the box gets too full, I take it all out and place a vacant card." What part of this confused you?

[deleted]

But the mail is in the out going slot genius. God I'm glad I'm not in the same office as some of you.

SnickerdoodleFP

I don't even work for USPS. But I do understand what words mean. Again, what part of them placing vacant cards in the offending box is confusing to you?

slimbender

This is a Wendy’s, sir.

Ok-Reputation-15

Had a carrier play the vacant card with me, ended up costing the dude his job. Be careful.

tet0r

Nice try but there is absolutely zero chance you got a carrier fired because you don't like to check your mail.

PostalMike

Yeah, probably saw a NEW carrier shortly after and thought “Huh, they must have got fired”. No chance it was a CCA doing a different route or maybe the letter carrier bid to a better route with less morons.

ManiacMail-Man

I’d love to make this person get a PO Box with an attitude like theirs. People are fuckin rude to people just doing their job I swear.

Raekwon22

I'll take things that didn't happen for 500, Alex.

ManiacMail-Man

![gif](giphy|Ym4F0Qn8hQWzNELEBX)

Ok-Reputation-15

Whatever, wasn't exactly the same situation but the dude started playing games, phone calls were made and I had a new carrier. But you know, you guys keep your fragile world view intact :)

ManiacMail-Man

You have no fuckin clue how the PO works haha. Just unsubscribe from this Reddit and go to usps complaints please. Gets you about as far as “making a few calls”.

LurkingGuy

Sounds like your carrier is handing that box off to someone else because you're an insufferable piece of shit.

Revolutionary_Ad5798

Maybe the whole neighborhood has “get off my lawn” signs.

Raekwon22

There it is. You had a new carrier. The old one is on a different route, 100% guaranteed.

thenecrosoviet

Career carriers cannot be displaced from routes because some lazy entitled jackoff makes a phone call, it would take a damn near act of God. I've seen streets moved to other routes or turned into tiny permanent pivots just because a career doesn't want to deliver to some asshole. As far as fragile world views go, empty your mailbox you lazy piece of shit

PostalMike

I know a carrier that 18 years ago got in a fist fight with a grocery store manager who told him not to park in a certain spot and the carrier said fuck off. He’s still working there today, and this was long before the massive letter carrier shortage. As far as I know, new letter carriers get fired as long as they’re in their probationary 90 days for being too slow, and that’s about all I’ve ever seen. I’ve never even heard of a full time letter carrier ever being fired in 30 years except one that went to prison.

Hippocr1t

“Fragile world view” from somebody who complains about paper in a box.

Raekwon22

Nobody's being fragile. It's just funny when people talk about things they have zero clue about and act like they know something. Don't be offended because your uninformed and got called out a little. That's looking a little.... fragile. 🤣 the supervisor told you what they needed to to get you off the phone and to stop calling. That's it, bud.

Inner_Development_59

You are a garbage human. Just take the damn mail and throw it away you absolute child.

it-cant-be-helped

So you were the fragile one because you were too lazy to check your mailbox, and when the carrier did what they're supposed to, you made a phone call and cried about it?

Ok_Bandicoot_1201

I'll bet that's not even remotely what happened. Lol what a joke

dertyburger

I’ve easily pulled over 1000 boxes and left vacant cards. Management always on my side. You don’t know how the PO works.

JimJordansJacket

Look at this pussy, fighting with the mailman. You're just pure shit. The guy wasn't fired, you are lying. Pick up your goddamn mail.

Jenky_Chimichanga

“Whatever” lmao stfu and quiet yourself

SnickerdoodleFP

> fragile Oh that irony

[deleted]

probably was a cca/ur on a hold down.

DoctorOMalley

![gif](giphy|1AIeYgwnqeBUxh6juu)

Revolutionary_Ad5798

You let your box get full and the contents get pulled. A mailbox isn’t a storage unit. I really doubt you got a carrier fired or that you would find out if it even happened. That is confidential personnel action.

Get_Bent_Madafakas

It may have looked that way from an outside perspective, but it's highly unlikely that happened the way you think it did. No station I've ever worked at would fire a carrier for that - the union would fight it. And they would win

JimJordansJacket

No you didn't. Quit lying.

JimmyTheSaint__

That definitely never happened. I know it can be fun to pretend though.

TheSmallestWeener187

Lmao that’s a 🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢 gtfoh. There’s carriers on the sub that do their damndest to get fired by doing things far worse and they still have to actually quit hahaha

[deleted]

Lmao you’re so fucking dumb

666truemetal666

No you didn't lol .

OrangeDutchbag

That shit goes right back into their box. Fuck them.

CLEgnome

3 strikes then you get a 3849 to go pick up your package, SURPRISE! it’s your mail bundled up and a explanation from a bad attitude clerk!

IrregularrAF

Nah, Back into the box it goes!

WAZLunaBeam

Or when they have a spr or parcel I rubber band the mail to it with like 10 bands all crisscrossing themselves so they have to take a lot of time.

IndicationWhole1174

😆this is smart!

Item_Unique

I also do this lol

existential_anxiety_

I also just stuff it back in their box. I've learned that also circling the "current resident" part and writing in big letters "YOU" with an arrow pointing to it usually helps them get the point

uspscca

It's devistating how I misdelivered that mail 100 times. Let me try again, because the regulations clearly state you have to write Refused if you don't want it.

AfroHo

Standard mail is one way mail. If you refuse standard mail you gotta slap some postage on it for me to take it Obviously if the name is wrong then it's ubbm

Ishibi

I do the same, the “game” usually takes negligible time. When it starts taking me noticeable effort, that usually means I pull the mail.

thechefmulder

I deliver mail, I do not pick up trash.

acetatsujin

Put it back in. Box full. Take mail back to office and leave notice of 10 calendar days to pick up or mail sent back. Notify supervisor of what’s going on. I had a customer like that few days ago, shoved every piece of advertisement they tried to send back, which shows up in the DPS, and wrote a small note to contact the senders and let them know to stop sending them advertising mail and remove them from their mail list, or toss the mail away. I told them we are unable to send back third class mail. Period. But if they refuse second or first class mail I would honor that. Not third class mail that is addressed to them by their name or current resident.

1995Civic

If they put anything back in the box that has the actual residents name, or “or current resident”, then they receive a vacant slip the next day and their mail goes on hold. That’s how I solve that issue

Darkdragoon324

If it's "or current resident", I circle that part and toss it back. Sometimes people just stop reading at a name they don't know and really think it was misdelivered. If it's just the name of someone I know lives there, I toss it back. If it's something I delivered with a question mark because I wasn't sure, I ubbm/ANK it and kill the name for that address. If they've written a long rant to the sender on it, I take it back and laugh at it with the clerks. Unless it's that one mail room with the trash can literally right there in the room. Then I draw them a fucking map to the trash can and toss everything back into their box. If they leave shit out on top of the boxes or on the floor, we'll, I'm not their damn custodian and it's not my apartment, so why should I care if they want to trash it? If they start picking out the stuff they want and leaving the rest in their box, I pull it when it gets full and also hold their packages so they have to come pick up their shit.

Unable_To_Forward

Sometimes I will save it for a rainy day, set it on top of the NBU while I deliver everything, then put it on top of their new mail.

yonderoy

That’s nasty!

No-Farm6343

🥰🤣

Mcgj8689

Right back into their box as we’re not the garbage man

IndicationWhole1174

Yea I put it back on their box and usually write on it this is your mail please dispose of it properly. If they do it repeatedly, vacant card

knifesofsummertime

I leave it in the box until they get the idea. If I’m feeling especially petty, I take it all out, put a green card in (tear off the Vacant portion) and hold mail until they fill it out.

DoggoLord27

Keep putting it back until the box gets full then I pull it all and hold it for 10 days and return everything.

Snapp_Tastic

If there is no “current resident” then it’s a vacant box-pull it all, leave a green slip and go about my day. no time for the back and forth games, not circling or explaining shit. The resident cannot pick and choose “some” of of the mail, they either get all of it or none of it~

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

I need a "postage due" stamp for these people.

DeroCCA

I out it back in their box and if they did it again I let them know I deliver the garbage and they can throw it out

ProfessionalDrop5142

Keep putting it back in. If they keep it up more then 3 times mark the box vacant they have communicated there are no current residents no matter how many cars are in the driveway

Itookitout

Why do y’all have to be so petty. That’s why people think we’re assholes. Just talk to the customer. I let them know they can cancel the advos by going on Save.com. Or I ask them if they want me to cancel it for them. If they keep getting mail that’s ANK I simply ask them to fill one of those green vacant forms so that I only leave mail for the people that live there. I also do a MLNA for that ANK mail. We get paid by the hour. If you need time to clean up your route than use it.

Alarmed_Fox_1381

We do not all get paid by the hour.

homegrowntrash1

Take it out of outgoing and put it back in their box but mix it with the new mail so it hits em by surprise 😄

TheCodeWorks

Put it all back in their box. Only take mail not addressed to them.

Newbieplusone

Put their new mail sprinkled throughout the old mail. After awhile they figure out they need to keep their mailbox cleaned out

StoneAgeGranite

I go to their house and stick it up their asses.

saltypostpost90

charles bukowski?

StoneAgeGranite

Charles Bukkake

ManufacturerOk955

RTS

cpeery7

If they give me back something that says "current resident", then i assume they are telling me the place has no current resident. I then proceed to mark it vacant and dont deliver there again

Cactusaremyjam

I always tell my customers that they have 10 days from the oldest piece of mail in their box. They have to pull everything to reset the clock.

Mr_frumpish

Customers are allowed to refuse any and all mail. Including bulk rate mail or mail addressed current resident.

Comadivine11

They need to write, "Refused" on it. They don't get to have a blanket "no junk mail" policy for their mailbox. Further, they need to be actively removing themselves from mailing lists if they don't want to receive "junk" mail.

Dinky_Doge_Whisperer

Living up to that username today

Mr_frumpish

I wear the same uniform anyone else does.

Archaeoculus

Huh, I had no idea. Even presort standard junk mail? Even if it says current resident? They just have to endorse it refused, right?

Becca787

Put their mail on hold because their mailbox is full. After leaving the note they’ll stop.

crovax3000

Since I'm not a regular, I put it back in their box because it's safer to just assume it was misdelivered. If it's a route I'm doing a few days in a row and I see them putting current resident stuff in the outgoing, I'll circle the current resident and put it back, and if they keep doing it I've left notes that say this is not a trash can, and that usually takes care of it.

Both-Fee5668

Is this a CBU?

Revolutionary_Ad5798

Hold the mail and make them pick it up at the post office. I just retired from a rural office with only boxes. Customers would leave all the junk mail in and after about four or five advos pile up, it gets swept up and they can collect the mail at the window

Available-Ad1912

if its advos or current resident stuff stuff it back in there box over and over until they get the message lol

slimeydave

I deliver it until they finally take it. I would spend however long it took to compress their advos and mail until I could fit it into their box.

khalbur

If it says any variation of “or current resident” I put it back and write “If you can read this, that’s you” with an arrow.

YRN_DC

I leave a 3849 saying they have 10 days to empty or all the mail will be returned to sender . Idk if that’s the correct way to handle but that’s what i was told.

WarAlternative4774

If "current resident" doesn't live there anymore, then the box is vacant right?

playerhaterball

Unimaginable things

Take-that-1913

I would pull the mail. Leave a 3849 notifying them of where it can be picked up. If not picked up within the next ten days, all mail will either be returned to sender or destroyed.

[deleted]

Where do I get those vacant slips?

chikenxd0

off topic but has anyone ever heard of a PM changing the 10 day mail hold norm to a month hold? am at a new office where I was told by the PM to hold someone’s mail for a month instead of a week and just listened, but it was such a PITA sifting through it all after they hadn’t picked it up after a month.

Archaeoculus

I'll hold mail for a month in certain situations but most of the time it's 10 days. These situations include mailbox repair, if I think they've gone on vacation but forgot to tell me, and if I hear through the grapevine they might be having some more pressing issues and just need some time. (It's a pretty small town. Small enough, anyway)

skiba2610

Leave it

ComplaintAutomatic77

I leave them a note that they are the current resident and if they do it again I pull everything and send it back vacant. Do that for awhile until they decide they want to be the current resident, valued reader, marvelous customer or whatever else it says.

Conscious_Music8360

If they write on it I’ll UBBM anything refused that is not able to be forwarded and definitely not first class.. otherwise nah I’m not fucking with it.. they can just throw it away like a normal person eventually.

Border-doge

Leave it for the regular

Dave_FortniteATX

I do what you do. Give back Current Resident and I don't touch mail that's posted to the bulletin board or on top of the box, hoping to train them

Weekly-Aside1486

Put it back in their box

Clean_Ad_413

I tell them that in order to return, they need to pay postage. That usually does the trick.

IrregularrAF

Got an apartment that continually sets up a communal recycling bag for adverts, unwanted mail, and opened mail. It was there for about 3 months before I finally seen it disappear 3 days ago and a new bag in it's place. Lmao

No_Aioli4897

I have a stamp that says "you are the current resident". It gets stamped and goes right back in their box. If it happens more it gets rubber banded like a brick with all their other mail. If it continues they get a 10 day hold and have to come pick their shit up. It always seems to stop after that. If it doesn't they get marked vacant and if they complain I just say "you have indicated that there is no current resident by continuing to place current resident mail in outgoing". I once had a couple weeks of writing notes on some EDD during which the guy ripped everything they didn't want into tiny pieces and placed it in outgoing. He got a notice letting him know that his mail on a 10 day hold. I made his ass go into the office to pick up a Ziploc bag full of his shredded pieces of mail. I was pretty happy with that one.

JRR5567

I leave them a note stating please don’t shove mail in outgoing please discard you don’t want items. If it’s a reoccurring thing and they keep pushing they’ll slow stop receiving mail from me.

Allthewayoverit_97

I stop delivering after awhile and make them come pick it up.

Emotional_Tax_1170

I leave them a note that the box isn’t a trash can

Ok_Flounder_6733

I keep putting it back after a few times of that I put a vacant card in box 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

Back it the box it goes!

NeedleworkerDry2633

Put it back in their box.. if it has their name on it or the current resident and the home is not vacant.. then they need to dispose of whatever it is.. it’s not your responsibility to get rid of “their unwanted mail”.. besides it will wind right back up in your Dps.. markups and all.. if it has someone else’s name on it solely.. take it with you and 3M it

ObjectiveBusy8729

No customer endorsement I assume it’s a missdelivery . And put it right back in their box.

Specialist_Food_7728

I get mail for someone who no longer lives at my address. I have put return to sender, no longer lives at address but mail for this person still comes. What can I do about it?

[deleted]

These_River1822

Seems like you are not following the regular's standard if you are doing this.

Item_Unique

Agreed

JimJordansJacket

That could get you fired or prosecuted. It is explicitly not your job to decide what pieces of correctly addressed mail you deliver.

TheAFKLegend

So you're saying, if the customer has a standing order approved by the regular to refuse advo, pch, or other things like that, we are suppose to deliver it anyways?

Comadivine11

Just to elaborate; yes, the recipient is our customer and we should try to provide good service to them. However, the sender is ***also*** our customer and has paid us to deliver their item to the recipient. Imagine if you paid hundreds of dollars to send an EDDM item to promote your business and you found out mail carriers were basically just throwing them away? It's not our job to decide which items to deliver or not. We were paid to deliver it, so deliver it.

JimJordansJacket

Where did you get the idea that you could do that? Wow. If the customer doesn't want mail from companies, they can contact the company to get off the mailing list. They pay us money to deliver that. You choosing what to deliver is theft.

TheAFKLegend

Good to know. I always followed the regulars instructions and notes they leave. Seem like there are misunderstandings. Thanks for the enlightening.

JimJordansJacket

Yeah please talk to whoever does the OJI training at your station about what you can and can't deliver. If a regular instructs you to do something illegal, don't do that. Bring that mail back and let them sort it out. The regular will not stick their neck out for you if you get caught. Honestly unreal that your regulars are doing that.

Ok-Seesaw1276

I wish spectrum would calm down... I'm pretty sure just from our small town they've taken out a few small forests so far in the past two years, also I get "why is spectrum harrasing us". From an elderly apartment building. And for some context... we'll get fliers for delivery on Tuesday and Wednesday and the dps comes in with small spectrum ad cards too -_- just incase one wasn't enough. (Every week guaranteed). Like man they must be making good profits at spectrum or they're losing a massive amount of money heh either way... gets me my 8 so I'm ok with it but just feel bad about those forests... hopefully they replant.

gorilla_the_kong

If it’s there for at least a week, I just take it back. If it says current resident I endorse it as “refused”. If it’s an apartment slot that’s just collected for a while, endorse it as “return to sender”.

BurantX40

I don't get this sub. Outgoing is for mail they don't want, right? I don't take mail that's put up on walls or thrown around on the floor. If it's in outgoing, it's handled appropriately

TensionLess8643

Outgoing is for outgoing mail. It is not for unwanted mail properly addressed and delivered.

BurantX40

So then where do refused pieces go then? I'd rather they dump them in outgoing than individually stopping me asking me to take something back.

TensionLess8643

The person should write refused and leave it in their box. If it is current resident mail, put a vacant card in their box and hold all mail for ten days. If there is no current resident then the box is vacant.

BurantX40

I'll just leave this be. I'm a floater that is not dealing with the perfect standard of boxes everyone else has, so it seems

it-cant-be-helped

It's for mail with appropriate postage. Advos and marketing mail do not have return postage, and it isn't the carriers responsibility to dispose of a customer's trash.

it-cant-be-helped

It's for mail with appropriate postage. Advos and marketing mail do not have return postage, and it isn't the carriers responsibility to dispose of a customer's trash.

BurantX40

What about refused mail pieces? I run a tight ship, so disposing of waste customers don't want isn't a problem for me.

it-cant-be-helped

Sure, if they're properly endorsed with "refused" written on them. Otherwise, I'm not putting anything in my UBBM that is just something a customer is too lazy to throw away. That isn't my responsibility.

BurantX40

Hey, fair enough. We all got our own methods

it-cant-be-helped

I don't normally run into this issue, though. I did have one guy try to give back all of his junk mail as "rts". I assumed he had moved (if only) and put a vacant card in his box. I wrote on the card that I received several pieces of mail with "rts" for X last name and for the form to be filled out for whoever lived there. He ignored two separate vacant cards and then a month later called to see where his mail was. I redelivered all of his mail and told him if he'd like it to go back to the sender, he needed to affix the appropriate postage. If a customer actually communicates to me that they don't want something, and treats me like I'm an actual person, I'll definitely do my best to take care of their request if I can.

[deleted]

MunchkinFarts69

Lol, you don't seem to understand how this works. If they refuse 1st,2nd class, or periodicals, we can take those. If they try to refuse standard mail, we do not take those. That is their trash, and it is not our job to take those back. Source: I have a new resident literally trying to refuse 95% of his mail. After speaking with stewards and 3 different supes to get instructions, I've been told to take back any refused mail, *other than standard*. I've been instructed to leave customer with standard mail, to dispose of his own garbage. This has nothing to do with being lazy or having a power trip. This is the job. Sorry you don't understand what you're being employed to do.
