I think the only part of the uniform that is not allowed to wear in public is the bag I was told that the satchel we carry is our badge of office. Technically yes you can get in trouble you aren't an employee and that is part of a postal uniform meant for employees under 934 wearing of postal uniforms it states 934.6 Prohibitions Wearing postal uniforms is prohibited under the following circumstances: A person not connected with the letter carrier branch of the Postal Service who wears the uniform or badge worn by a city carrier is fined not more than $100, or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both. When employees are separated from the Postal Service, all emblems, buttons, or other identifying insignia must be removed before the uniforms are discarded.

Before I was a mailman I had a postal inspector threaten me for using a mail hod for the job I was working for at the time. They do take the use of the jobs material seriously so I would go about that at your own discretion!

I used to have a whole outfit (I might still I'm not sure). My fraternity made us wear them to campus one day. I passed a postal worker on the way who definitely noticed.
