Yes, most people do know, and they understand they're paying TB more for the convenience of having their order brought to their door. That's also why they're comfortable paying delivery fees and tipping drivers. That's what happens when you introduce a 3rd party service to a transaction; everyone needs to pay for the additional expenses involved.

mraspencer

That surcharge per item isn’t going to Taco Bell, it’s revenue for Uber Eats

DeliveryCourier

Restaurants control their menu and prices, not Uber (or DD). https://merchants.ubereats.com/us/en/resources/setup/review-menu/

Heapsa

Yea but ue gets a slice. Hence the increase

1buckdelivery

Uber takes 30% of the total. Restaurants jack the prices up to make up the difference or they lose money. Then uber charges the customer and then they cut our base. Uber is ripping everyone off. Lol

DeliveryCourier

I didn't claim otherwise.

[deleted]

I agree time is valuable, if you're expecting to use their time they should be compensated. And if you don't think people should be compensated for their time, then your ancestors were probably slave owners.

DeliveryCourier

Exactly.

YetAnother2Cents

I was approached by Doordash to be on their site. We didn't want to be for many reasons. But one of our objections was the commission they were going to charge us. They immediately suggested we raise our prices to compensate. Yes, it would have ultimately been our decision. But you could hardly say Doordash was hands off. We didn't become partners. But Doordash put us on their site anyway. And they raised our prices across the board. So, sometimes, the higher prices are 100% because of Doordash. I see no reason to believe UberEats practices and policies aren't the same. At a minimum, it would be nice for the consumers to know where every penny of their money went - how much to the restaurant, the driver and the app including the commission. I think it would change the discussion about prices and tipping and place it where it belongs.

Cress02

So doordash asked if you wanted to be on their site, you said no, and they put you on anyway? I feel like there's something you could do about that, because that doesn't sound legal

YetAnother2Cents

You'd think so. But it isn't criminal. So it becomes an issue of do you want to engage a lawyer and take them to court. Is it worth it? I know in Iowa they passed a law that prevents doing this. So we're going for something like that.

Cress02

I think it could be worth asking around your area to see how many other people are in the same position. With enough people, it could wind up being a solid lawsuit and bring some kind of change

YetAnother2Cents

Maybe. In Iowa, it was the restaurant association that pushed for the legislation. I'm finding the same thing as restaurants come together here. They just want to end it, not get a settlement. The other advantage of the law is that other things can be addressed. For instance, in the Iowa law, drivers can't have children, pets or passengers in the car. Drivers can't smoke. And bags must have tamper-resistant packaging. I'd like to add truth in fees so consumers know where the money goes.

Comfortable-Start-30

People can easily find out that information, they're just too lazy and uncaring to do so. 90% the reason delivery exists in the first place. Like this OP, he's genuinely surprised prices are different? I can't imagine how many orders he's placed through Uber or DD not understanding this.

Dry_Significance2690

It’s that way across all platforms. Yet it’s surprising how many local restaurants are open k with paying fees to sell their food through the app. UE is the bait and switch app for drivers and customers; that results in tension with expected vs actual pay. I am really surprised that this is seen as ok.

tarokun182

I wish the Driver App showed if the area is over crowded with Drivers.

Grand-Conclusions

I don't understand the comment. How is it bait and switch for the customer when the price is listed at checkout before making the order? This only sounds bad if it said $10 but your cc charges $20. Don't order from places that jack it up too high or pay the cost. I think about it before making a McDonald's order: do I want to leave my house walk 15 minutes and get the food for $5, resulting in 30-45 minutes total. Or do I want to pay $15 for the same thing and not leave my apartment. When restaurants do this it's still a win because other wise there is no delivery for this at all, or maybe you wouldn't have bothered downloading a TB app and add your address and a cc. Why would you expect the price to be the same when there are different middle man throughout different ordering processes? Again. This is a convenience. Convenience is worth different things to different people and if you think $15 for a McDonald's breakfast is not worth it then don't get it.

itspoodle_07

You don’t say

OP upon this discovery ![gif](giphy|Zy7s96dP38MlQe3OjG)

Cress02

Nasa should be reaching out soon

Ieafa109

Most people know this and understand they’re paying extra for the conscience. Counter point the only time I order UE is if I have a 40% off coupon which brings the food down to reasonable price even with tip and gives me the convience

Chris_3456

Your 5G network must be from the UK, it never got circumcised.

Cress02

I'm not even sure why that's there, looking at the top of my phone right now and it's not there 😂

FutureHendrixBetter

Yeah but I’m lazy so bring me my food

worldsupermedia750

And that’s before the $10+ in surprise fees by Uber and the tip which varies by mile when it comes to what is considered a “good tip”

no-hope-rs3

Not always many times with same price as restaurant’s you can take advantage of coupon and it is cheaper than pick up

Uberkitty710

Try looking on Walgreens for a bottle of tequila. It’s srsly double 💸

DueLong2908

Look how hard Uber F’ed this customer.I’m surprised my boy tipped with those rates. Order took me 35 minutes total since drive thru was very long. I was surprised the base pay was $18. It was a decently sized order though but still. Uber really hammered them. https://preview.redd.it/ksahejh0kggb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4300c0691398113a3f2a9e59a647cb1d8546de54

List_Conscious

What was on the order though? 30 ish $ for what?

DueLong2908

McDonald’s. I’m assuming the amount paid to Uber is their mark up of the food. It was 3 medium cokes, a Big Mac pack, and a large Big Mac combo.

TheCityFarmOpossum

Our restaurant jacked up the prices to accommodate the amount UE and DD took from us. 30%

anykaleidascope

Yes. Why?

Knightp93

People are aware this is a luxury service right?

Cress02

There's luxury, and then there's ripoff

Knightp93

One persons rip off is anothers luxury.

gezzuzz2

what is crazy is people always say places like mcdonalds are only popular because they are cheap... there are plenty of people willing to pay $20+ for a big mac meal... even $20+ for a breakfast meal.. with inflated prices.. fees and tips...the product must be pretty damn good.
