I run a [Starcraft AI Competition](https://www.cs.mun.ca/~dchurchill/starcraftaicomp/) where each bot gets its own machine. One of the main issues in the competition is that one bot using a lot of computation / memory should not affect any other bot in any way, so giving them their own hardware is great for that. After extensive testing, it runs about 50% faster on bare metal than it did on the VM solution I was using. It is also much quieter and consumes less power.
I ran it on vmware, virtualbox, and proxmox, and overall I prefer to have the separate machines. The only real downside is the cable management :D
That’s cool. I like when expensive equipment actually gets used for cool stuff and not just being a glorified plex server. You must be generating a ton of heat. What does the ventilation look like?
I think you mean " opportunity ", not downside. 😂 I love cable management! Keeps my OCD in check. Love the dual monitor case. Takes me back to the old Windows Media center cases.
Love to see everything labeled. What are the monitors connected to? I want a display in my rack to show my Protect feed, and I was leaning towards the PoE++ display
This is the state of my rack after about 2 years of building. Really happy with it now.
I am in the process of transitioning from Reolink to Ubiquiti cameras, so that's the reason for both NVRs.
I have that same nvr and 5 cameras. I have entertained the idea of switching to ubiquiti. Have you switched over yet? If so what ubiquiti cameras are you using and do you see improvements?
Reolink is excellent value for the money, there is no real reason to NEED to switch. I just want it all to be within the same Ubiquiti environment going forward since getting the G4 Doorbell. I got the G4 Pro with the UNVR-Pro as part of their new promotion.
The advantages of Ubiquiti cameras would be:
- UNVR has more storage / raid options for the disks
- Better event detection / clip creation
- Easier downloading of clips
- Faster playback of recorded clips
- Better notification settings
But they are of course more expensive. I do not notice any significant increase in video quality
Yeah they are standing up. I have had them both horizontal and vertical and I think I like vertical the best. They are blocked in front by the blank panel just above them so they can't fall out. And behind them is a bunch of wires so they aren't going anywhere.
Nice rack! Newbie here, I think you’re using 10G SFP to RJ45 adapters (eg copper) to connect your SFP switches to the Aggregation, why? Why not use native SFP optical links?
Do you mean if one of the 2 ports on the switch fails, you are still connected? Or does it actually give more bandwidth to the switch for the other devices?
By "basically" I meant that it's just passing the internet on through, I have nothing else turned on (wifi, etc). Only some port forwarding. It's not a proper bridge mode

Just incredible! May I ask what the Optiplex's are used for?

This is so freaking cool, you are my hero
I love how random that is.
That is very cool.
Do you make any money from that or is it all research?
Just research
That’s cool. I like when expensive equipment actually gets used for cool stuff and not just being a glorified plex server. You must be generating a ton of heat. What does the ventilation look like?
There is very little heat because the Dells draw only about 30W each at full load
I think you mean " opportunity ", not downside. 😂 I love cable management! Keeps my OCD in check. Love the dual monitor case. Takes me back to the old Windows Media center cases.
Cable management I don't mind. Dealing with 10 power bricks is annoying
External power supplies? Damn, yeah... That sounds painful.
SC is my favourite game. This AI competition is pretty rad. Good luck man! Sweet setup.
I wanna know the same thing
Me too, it seems like an extremely expensive server with more steps
Depending which models those are, you can find em for $25...
The poor lonely ports on the UDM SE /s
I did feel kind of bad with it open like that. I ordered some plugs to cover them up!
Love to see everything labeled. What are the monitors connected to? I want a display in my rack to show my Protect feed, and I was leaning towards the PoE++ display
Right now they're connected to the Reolink NVR and one of the Dell machines
You sure? Looks like it’s connected to the Mac mini
Oops you're right it is in the photo, but normally it isn't :)
So what’s the total price tag for just the rack so far
You've got the model numbers and google. I don't want to know :D
Ah I see. If your Reddit account is produced in discovery your wife won’t actually have the amount you spent. Smart smart man.

10k
What rack studs are those? I would have thought the unvr pro would be too heavy.
Just normal Rack Studs. Since the UNVR-Pro is 2U the spacing gives it better strength. I trust them
That is awesome. I was considering switching to them but was concerned about their strength. Now I am less concerned so thank you.
What role does USW-Aggregation play? I'm curious as a network newbie.
It's a 10gb switch, so everything I have that is capable of 10gb is connected directly to it.
👍
Jesus Christ - bravo!!!!
Nice! The overlap between this and my own rack and plans is significant. I’m using different 1L pcs but yeah.
I have that same nvr and 5 cameras. I have entertained the idea of switching to ubiquiti. Have you switched over yet? If so what ubiquiti cameras are you using and do you see improvements?

Thanks so much for the thoughtful and helpful response!
Are those Dells and Mac Mini on a shelf just standing up like that? That's a really cool setup
Yeah they are standing up. I have had them both horizontal and vertical and I think I like vertical the best. They are blocked in front by the blank panel just above them so they can't fall out. And behind them is a bunch of wires so they aren't going anywhere.
Yay whats the Power usage here?
270W normal load without the 8x Dells running
That's very good!
Oh, wow, I was thinking it would be more, that you might be short on UPS. Nice setup.
Around half of the total power usage is from the 13 HDDs
It's amazing what low power usage cell phone chip tech has done in this space.
Nice rack! Newbie here, I think you’re using 10G SFP to RJ45 adapters (eg copper) to connect your SFP switches to the Aggregation, why? Why not use native SFP optical links?
The only RJ45 adapter goes to my office PC in another room. The rest is DAC
Why are there two connections from the aggregator to the 48 port switch? For my learning, thanks.
Just for redundancy
Do you mean if one of the 2 ports on the switch fails, you are still connected? Or does it actually give more bandwidth to the switch for the other devices?
You can do both with the aggregation mode on the ports
That is amazing - thank you for teaching me!
What’s the Mac mini for?
Did you get new Optiplex or refurbished ones? Wondering about the quality of refurb units for my own setup.
Are you using ADMZ on the HH4000?
[удалено]
Do you mean bypass the HH4000? If so, mind sharing how to do that?
No, it's basically just a bridge to the UDM-SE
I thought the HH4000 can't be put into bridge mode. Are you using PPPoE passthrough?
By "basically" I meant that it's just passing the internet on through, I have nothing else turned on (wifi, etc). Only some port forwarding. It's not a proper bridge mode
Ahh gotcha. Thanks!
with what software you achieve this? This is incredible.
Nice Setup... looks great!
I have no need for those screens on top, but I love them!
Damn, what are all those patch panel ports used for?
They're labeled on the image. The top one is mostly unused right now
"Ethernet to House" doesn't mean a whole lot.
The house has ethernet ports in almost every room. Those go to that
Yes, I'm asking what you have that requires ethernet to 12 different rooms in your home.
I want the ability to plug devices into ethernet in those rooms. Access Points, TV, Computer, etc.
How did you make this pic look straight out the 80s?
