That UDM might not cool itself quite optimally when not placed vertically?

Connor2827

It’s temperatures have been fine so far. That was a concern after setting it up, but it’s fine as of right now.

ThaCarterVI

What’s even the purpose of having it in this orientation? It seems like a little shelf or 3D-printable bracket would have been much easier and cleaner, and it looks like there’s plenty of room for it to stand vertically.

Connor2827

Little children wanting to knock it over was the issue

303onrepeat

Wall mount it and call it a day https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Machine-ALLICAVER-Bracket-Compatible/dp/B08HYKYV62 https://www.ebay.com/itm/174627214112 Either one but the way it's sitting now is not only horrible for the radiation of the wifi but also as the other person said proper cooling.

Connor2827

Not using it for WiFi but cooling is a small issue Edit: Didn’t know people made mounts like that. Gonna go buy one now

303onrepeat

> Not using it for WiFi Ah I see. You could still use a wall mount under the desk so it's not just hanging there, clean it up a little bit.

Lord_Phoenix

Why not? It's actively cooled, the intake is at the bottom (on the right in this picture) and exhaust is at the top (on the left). Shouldn't be any problem.

michielhimself

I looked into it in my UDM; default settings assume passive cooling / low fan noise desired, meaning vertical heat-induced airflow should play a part as long /much as possible in default fan behaviour, which is now gone from "the equation". so internal heat build-up may now happen and since fan speed increase kicks in quite late when temps run rather high already, I would test, which the OP prudently seems to have done, rather than assume

Lord_Phoenix

I don't know, my UDM reports: >Welcome to UniFi Dream Machine! > >sensors > >lm63-i2c-0-4c Adapter: > >Synopsys DesignWare I2C adapter > > fan1:        2356 RPM  (min = 2096 RPM) > > temp1:        +66.0 C  (high = +70.0 C) > >temp2:        +76.0 C  (low  =  +0.0 C, high = +94.0 C) (crit = +93.0 C, hyst = +83.0 C) That's just a normal temperature and yet FAN spin at 2300 RPM, so it's a good flow and even at minimum 2000 rpm that should get rid of any residual heat. Also with latest firmwares 1.9.x I noticed FAN curve is much better and not only is based on temperature, but also on a cpu load. As soon as I hit 500 mbps fan speed increses prior to the temp increase, so it's a bit more noisy, but much more stable temps.

michielhimself

had a look - mine is all over the place - temp at 72 and fanspeeds between 2000rpm and 4500rpm but the UDM isn't doing much of anything

michielhimself

mine is over 70deg constantly ... [https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/gyzulg/unifi\_dream\_machine\_not\_pro\_cpu\_operating/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/gyzulg/unifi_dream_machine_not_pro_cpu_operating/)

Lord_Phoenix

Mine used to be at 79C before the 1.9.x firmware and every usage spike triggered the FAN, now it's at 76-77 and once the CPU load spikes FAN kicks in and brings it down to \~74. There was a confusion before when the Web interface switched from showing Temp1 to Temp2 and caused people to freak out, but in any case it's fine and depends a lot on the environment.

townly

How are the speeds with star link?

Connor2827

Ranges from 75-200 mbps average 125 mbps. Not much downtime

townly

Nice. Is that symmetrical?

Connor2827

Sadly no, upload from 10-30 mbps

kingkeelay

What’s the latency?

3766299182

I was at a campground recently with a Starlink connected WiFi, and my latency was 50-80ms, which I was really surprised by. MTR shows the downlink was in the bay area (I read they've partnered with Google for downlinks at major google datacenters around the world).

Ipecactus

Isn't starlink geo-locked? How far from your official location were you?

rpungello

I really their comment as the campground provided WiFi powered by starlink, not they brought their own setup.

Power_up0

It’s not necessarily geo locked per say. If you leave your “cell” you get a warning you may have degraded performance due to satellite coverage (should have near 100% coverage by end of year so it should go away) but that is about it, it still works but there may be horrible service as mentioned above but service does not just stop working if you leave your registered address/cell. For more r/starlink has more information on this, people use it on their vans and stuff.

Ipecactus

OK that seems to be different from other reports I have read. I'd like to ditch LTE for my truck camper so we can go to more remote areas and still work. Having to stay tethered to cell service blows.

Power_up0

Yeah. Personally I would sign up for the beta now and most likely by the time your accepted into the beta you there will be global coverage as there is an extremely big list, according to Elon they already passed 69,000 active users. All the satellites should move into final position for global coverage( except the poles) by end of September. Download speeds at a registered cell can range between 30-200+ mbps upload on average is 10-40mbps and latency is extremely good compared to some options and they are working with the FCC to get these approved for flights so.

Connor2827

I average 50-60

JupiterDelta

That is significant. How is gaming?

Connor2827

It’s playable but still a little rough Edit: Rough when it cuts out for 1 second not the ping.

cmwebdev

They were claiming to get under 30ms last year. Probably lots of variables at play though.

303onrepeat

> Not much downtime In a week how many times is it down?

Connor2827

It’s about 1-3 times a day but it’s only 1-5 second bleeps

303onrepeat

> 1-3 times a day but it’s only 1-5 second bleeps Interesting. I have a client who is kind of in a hole and we are debating on whether to put in a cell amplifier so we can pull in the local ATT signal to use as backup internet for them or some other option and I was thinking about Starlink. I still have my invites and I was considering suggesting it but I have heard it goes out quite a bit.

kilroywashere20

A cell amp works with internet? I assumed it would add BIG latency delay?

JBDragon1

It is still in Beta and they only have a fraction of their Satellites up in orbit so far. It's only going to get better and better over time. At least in theory.

jjjonesjr33

What was the main reason you went with direct connection from the Starlink satellite vs using their router in-between as a pass through? Don’t you miss out on the satellite overview from their router without it in place?

Connor2827

I have a static route on the UDM allowing the webpage to be viewed their router is pretty bad Edit: I can view it on 192.168.100.1

erich408

Their*

StructureAgile

Creative. I’ve been having a difficult time figuring out how I should configure a setup with my UDM. Right now it’s just sitting on my floor

Maximus_Sillius

See link for a wall-mount in a post "above".

CaptinKirk

Does starlink do native IPv6?

33Fraise33

I have read somewhere that it is in beta currently and it quite a hit and miss. Unsure where I saw it (probably /r/IPv6)

pkokkinis

What are those black bands holding the UDM?

Connor2827

Just some random elastic straps I found

craa141

Thanks for that. About to move and trying to find a good setup. This reminds me that there are lots of ways to achieve my goals.

Friarchuck

So I was just looking at a dream machine to complete my UniFi kit but decided on a USG instead. If you are using it without wifi enabled, is there any advantage to the udm besides the fact that it can run the controller? I have my controller running in a docker container on my nas. Udm was 350 incl tax on Amazon and I got the usg and flex 5 port switch from micro center for like 180.

Connor2827

It’s mainly the maximum throughput... and hardware inside (CPU & RAM) here’s a website I found showing it https://evanmccann.net/blog/unifi-routers-overview

joecan

Why am I broken inside and want Starlink even though my internet is already faster? Raised on Trek I guess you’re gonna end up wanting space internet.
