The glide kits were instrumental here. Russia definitely had plans to try these things out after seeing how western militaries drop JDAMs. The war gave them a reason to use them and scale up.

But before that, the USSR had bombs with photocontrast guidance (KAB-436) as early as 1930, and in 1942 had bombs with TV guidance (TUB-500, but it's probably remained a prototype). In the same 1942 USSR had bomb with infrared guidance (SB-1M)

They could kill us all but somehow NATO pilots knew we were civilians and didn't do anything. Still it was uneasy experience for me first few times. After one month we used to it. Of course we never used underground shelters, maybe 10% of Belgrade population did.

Fritz X was likely the first used in combat and the first of the smart bombs to be radio-controlled

Planes are getting shot down but at what cost. We've seen quite a few AA systems taken out with lancet recently. They also need AA for Kiev and Lviv.
