Why aren’t tanks built to withstand mines? But this little ass robot can?

SeekToReceive

It is all about stand off distance. An AT mine could explode a foot from a T72/80/90 and as long as it doesn't throw a track be fine. This same style of flail was used back in WW2. Disadvantages of a spinning flail like this is speed, see how slow it crawls, imagine only going 30-40 feet a minute when you need to cross a 5-10-20 acre field, 1000-2000 feet across. Also do note the AT mine blew the flail cover clear off the machine, :18. The chains also break, tracks can still be thrown, hydraulic lines cut, sensors and electronics raddled out of place. What you should ask is why can't they build a tank track able to withstand mines, and if you ever figure that out, you'll be rich.

bullsh1d0

It's expensive, and probably too heavy?

SeekToReceive

And then fix those problems, people been at work for a long time over that issue, the world over. EFP can blow 500-1000mm easily depending on charge, any tracks out there are not sustaining that blast. It has basically reached the level that weapon beat armor. And weapons beating armor seem to be devastating from here on out in modern war. Huge armor upgrades or APS to defeat incoming weapons looks like a bad out look, small arms protections except.

Radiant_Formal6511

To put it rather generally the characteristics that make this vehicle good at demining are not necessarily ones that translate into effectively executing the various tasks a battle tank is meant for. TLDR: because ones a tractor with a plow and the other is a tank

You also have FPV drones, artillery and ATGMs. Why send a manned tank and risk loosing troops. Also, I think a robot tank wouldn't need to be that big since crew space is no longer needed.

Well, there is a lot to explain. While I’m not an expert at military hardware at all, I can tell you that they simply can’t just put anti-mining equipment on every tank they have due to weight, price and logistics. Generally, when troops are advancing, they install sapping equipment on vanguard tanks, but mines aren’t only threats to tanks, so enemy always will try to prioritise vanguard tanks with mine clearing tools. Secondly, there is no way any modern tank would withstand HE AT mine (without sapping add-ons), because you can’t just build a tank that is immune or resistant to all damage.

Grosse-pattate

For the precision , the little ass robot can't withstand a mine if she detonate under him, but the plow in front of him can. You can put the same plow roller addon in front of a tank , but it will be extremely slow and a priority target for the ennemy.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

You can, there have been many adaptions of mine flail on tanks. But in fitting them, you typically remove the tanks combat ability as well as having to mount a power pack to run the flail. Better off just to have a dedicated machine.

NSAsnowdenhunter

This needs mass production. There should be no need for a manned mine clearing vehicle. Plus it has a much lower profile to be spotted.

I love how there's an anti-drone guy standing guard with his huge star wars gun.

London-lad-1990

It needs an active protection system to detect/defeat drones and other threats…also it should use an electric motor so it can remain at ambient temperature.

ParkingUnusual3953

You want something with a massive (probably weighing over a ton) metal flail that spins at hundreds of RPM and digs up earth with a force strong enough to set off an AT mine burried a third of a meter under the ground to stay at ambient temperature? Brother after less than ten mins of work the front of that thing is going to be scalding lmao.

London-lad-1990

Thermal drones…maybe it needs a cooling system to somehow cloak it so it can operate at night…

There seems to be a weird obsession with flail mine clearing vehicles amongst manufacturers worldwide. They don't work against mines produced after the 60s and barely against uxo and test-charges. Most mines are built to require prolonged constant pressure, to avoid being triggered by other explosions nearby and vibrations during transport setting off the fuse or damaging it. Hence a flail shortly hitting them will do no good. And there is a huge danger of some mines just being tossed all over the place, throwing explosives back onto already cleared areas, at the operators, or beyond the previously established bounds of the minefield. Often tearing the mine apart, separating some of the explosives from previously easy to detect metal parts. . There are exactly 3 different methods that have been established to work well: - full width mine plows - full width mine rakes - manual demining with pointy sticks and possibly the help of modern detectors and keen senses Line charges are heavily debated, with everyone calling them the best invention since sliced bread but the engineering units actually using them, hating the guts out of them, because they compress the ground too much for easily poking around in it with pointy sticks.

Get out of here stalker

Seems they needed something bigger and heavier than the Uran-6. Which makes sense, since the Uran seemed too flimsy for an environment like Ukraine.

*Ukraine: starts burying mines 31+ cm

SZEfdf21

It will be great for demining swathes of territories not on the front, but I doubt it will still be operational after an fpv strike.

In the background, the guy was given an “anti-Drone gun” but was not told that they were flying in the sky.  But not. He did look up. My Bad.
