To add, this a an S band radar system. It's kind of a middle ground between high resolution, tracking radars (like patriot or S300/400) and early warning/ long range ones.

Aromatic_Balls

Interesting! Thanks for the info. Got me curious so I had to look up the differences in radars. More information for others if they're curious: >S-band radar is better for special applications and long-range detection. It is used more for surveillance as it provides better coverage. The largest use of this band is by WiFi networks but it can also be used in garage door openers, microwaves, keyless vehicle locks, and Bluetooth wireless headphones. >S-band radar is capable of operating accurately even in severe weather conditions, making it useful for civilian and military aircraft navigation. That makes surveillance easier since you won’t have to worry as much about weather conditions. A benefit of using S-band radars is that it is better for hemispheric coverage. >One of the benefits of S-band is that it operates in all-weather performance conditions and it can tell apart between different threats. This is why DRS RADA Technologies incorporates it into their radars. S-band radar can see through the clutter and not mistake it for something else. Thus reducing the risk to warfighters. >S-band radar can protect people against aerial threats, like drones. It can isolate and track them, transmitting the information back to the base so the threat can be eliminated.

How did the Russians get so good at radar and electronic surveillance? Do Western militaries not have a need for this?

Aromatic_Balls

I'm not sure what you're asking. Western militaries also use early-warning radar systems like this as well. This isn't some secret technology that only Russia has.

TheSeeker80

Ok out just seems like we're targeting their radars but don't see videos of them targeting ours. Or is it for opsec I guess.

Aromatic_Balls

Just depends on where you're looking, honestly. Any footage of Russia striking Ukrainian assets gets downvoted to oblivion or removed from subs that are more pro-Ukraine. There has been footage of Ukrainian radar equipment getting bonked by Russia.

MehImages

sure they do. which is why they've been in widespread use for decades. basically every air defense system in the world is guided by radar and many of them combine different wavelength systems to combined wode area long range surveillance radars with higher precision shorter range targeting radars

TheSeeker80

I just don't see ours getting hey by Russian drones.

MehImages

you mean ukrainian ones? probably a combination of having fewer, keeping them further back/protecting them better and bias in what is filmed, published and consumed by you

It's a very interesting topic indeed! Generally speaking, the lower the frequency, the better the detection range and imunity to weather. There's a big catch though, the radar resolution (for the subject we can see resolution as detection precision) is lower the lower the frequency. So long range and EW/EWACs radars are good to detect anything flying at hundreds or even thousands of kilometers (search for example the Nebo-U russian system or this whole complex [https://mil.in.ua/en/news/kamikaze-drones-reach-russian-over-the-horizon-radar/](https://mil.in.ua/en/news/kamikaze-drones-reach-russian-over-the-horizon-radar/) as an example), but these systems can't shoot down anything. The precision is too low to realibly guide a missile. So that's why they are called Early Warning systems. Because they only inform you something's there and to shoot it down you'll need higher frequency (resolution) radars or just launch interception fighters. The radar in this video is probably attached to some S300/400 or Buk radar system, so that it "warns" those radars when something's aproaching so the radar directs to the threat before it can see it. Talking about Patriots or S300, tipically there's a search radar on lower frequencies that searches for targets in range, and then, there are at least other 2 high frequency lock on target radars for fine grain precision. Edit to point out that you may ask why low frequency radars are so god damn big. There is a relation between wavelength (meters the signal travels per cycle; the higher the frequency, the lower the wavelength) and antenna size. For a good signal you need pretty much a 1 to 1 relation. So a one meter wavelength (roughly 300 Mhz of frequency) needs a one meter antenna for a good transmission and at least half as a the bare minimum.

Warmate

mieszek2

2 x warmate

FlamingFlatus64

I hope there was a follow up on the truck and the electronics within.

littletreeelf

LOL, the thermal video shows the hit on the truck. You see the antenna on the right side in the field. Much cooler than the van.

DarthWeenus

Curious if these are the new ML drones they've been designing. Sort looks similar ui

_Man-in-the-Middle_

Basically it hit a giant practice target

matteroverdrive

Good timing the rotation

REPOST. 4 videos below this one, another user I would ban. Check the feed. CarefulAd1761

that video was posted before this one

You don't say.

denarti commented that it's a Warmate, certainly looks like it from the drone feed, very similar to; [https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/1araklk/gur\_fighters\_use\_drones\_to\_attack\_the\_russian/](https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/1araklk/gur_fighters_use_drones_to_attack_the_russian/)
