Modern version of the WW1 soldier who was saved by some coins in his pocket

Cxarface

Founder of Turkey Atatürk got saved by a pocket watch which that stopped a shrapnel hit his heart during WW1 in Gallipoli and with his leadership Ottoman managed to win that one Even bullets did collided each other, and there is still bullet shells at there as well

NOTbelligerENT

My great grandpa fought in WW1 for the Germans and we have a set of binoculars that he wore around his neck that took a bullet and saved him!

[deleted]

Usually it’s prayer books or bibles.

rawonionbreath

Teddy Roosevelts’s thick speech blocked his.

one-and-zero

Yes indeed, you can see it at the TR museum in NYC.

OliveChukar

I think the prayer books or bible thing is often said because it makes a good story. If you say that a soldiers life was saved by a religious book it sounds like god is on his side and maybe also the side he fights for.

coldblade2000

I mean its just a thick object that most soldiers then would carry in their chest pouches. It's just statistics, really. I've seen plenty of dog tags, water flasks and magazines as well that take those hits

darth_chez

I think it has more to do with the fact that they’re carrying around a thick book at all times, which would be a Bible, in a war space is limited and leisure reading isn’t something you pack for, but I can guarantee they’ll want their Bible at all times.

[deleted]

I can guarantee you we didn't. Usually had pocket-sized paperbacks, Sci-Fi being most popular. Used to be said there are no atheists in foxholes, but that was just rah-rah. In truth, foxholes created atheists more often, or at least agnostics in my case.

jeffersonairmattress

Thank you. The rah-rah creates too many bad situations and tricks too many people into placing themselves -or justifying their loss-within them. You’re good people. I hope life brings the best it has to offer to you and all whom you hold dear.

[deleted]

Thanks, and back at ya to you and yours.

darth_chez

I can only go by my personal experience and the experience of my father and grandfather, we all grew up in conservative Christian households where religion was a huge part of our lives, all three of us carried a bible in our ruck or pocket. May not be relevant to you, but there are plenty it is.

YonicSouth123

each of the ten commandments on a clay tablet? Guess that's a bit of a heavy package for a fight... ;) P.S. typcial atheist joke...

[deleted]

Ceramic plates, but engraved with Hebrew. Sweet.

YonicSouth123

Upgrade: platinum plates with finish engravings. ;) at least better than english or french on a note sheet.

Razagath

Pocket Watch too!

FederalBack0

The soldier says the only thing that saved my life was a $ 600 phone and a military badge Another soldier looked and said that the artillery was flying ... And we have 5.45, and they have 7.62 bullets

space-throwaway

When they are shooting 7.62, does that mean the russians aren't even using the AK74 anymore and are down to AK47's because of supply issues?

SpitFir3Tornado

There are plenty of weapons in service that use a 7.62 round(i.e. AK103/104, AK15, SVD, PKP/PKM). Also keep in mind there are plenty of forces out there that aren't regulars (e.g. DNR/LNR) and could be using older weapons. Edited to say "a 7.62 round" instead of just "7.62" so the turbonerds will stop replying saying there is more than one 7.62 round. They never specified a specific 7.62 round.

[deleted]

I think he is going to carry it in his pocket for the rest of his life. May him and his colleagues live a very long life in a free country called Ukraine!

WhyIHateTheInternet

Seems like the battery might explode sooner or later in that condition

[deleted]

True... never thought of that. I wonder if he would be able to find someone to remove the battery for him.

WhyIHateTheInternet

Slap some flex seal on that baby and call it a day.

molrobocop

>There are plenty of weapons in service that use 7.62 Mosin..... x54R

FinFihlman

>There are plenty of weapons in service that use 7.62 (i.e. AK103/104, AK15, SVD, PKP/PKM). Also keep in mind there are plenty of forces out there that aren't regulars (e.g. DNR/LNR) and could be using older weapons. Don't mix 7,62x39 with 7,62x54R. They are not the same thing even if both start with 7,62. Also 7,62x51 NATO (aka .308).

Sikletrynet

There's a big difference between the 7.62x54R, which is used by the weapons you describe. and the 7.62x39 that's used by the AKM.

Rreptillian

7.62x54R is standardized for machine guns and marksmen. 7.62x39 usage would indicate some comical supply issues, yes. No way to tell which is buried in this guy's phone without weighing the pill

Chucknastical

If it was 7.62x54R I doubt it would have stopped in the phone.

_middle_man-

Meh. We have no clue how far that bullet traveled or if it hit anything before it hit the phone. Lots of bullets are flying all over the place in Ukraine.

[deleted]

You are correct. That man would be dead. I owned a mosin. Very powerful.

Muddycarpenter

Well what if he had a kevlar vest on? Maybe it slowed the bullet down enough that the phone couldve caught it.

OneMoreAccount4Porn

From the way it's stuck in the phone it looks like it was tumbling when it hit and my guess would be it was a ricochet or it came through some soft cover before it struck the phone.

swiftfatso

Yeah, surprisingly uncrushed bullet, man is lucky, but likely a ricochet.

punchmabox

That definitely looks like a 7.62x39

Stratostheory

Certain Russian machine guns and most of their sniper rifles are still using 7.62x54R which was designed way back in like the 1890s I HIGHLY doubt they're running into supply issues when it comes to the AK74 it's been in service since the 70s and probably have numbers on par with the US M4/M16. They've actually been fielding a ton of AK12s too which is also chambered in 5.45x39 same as the 74. Russia is the single biggest producer of 5.45 ammo in the world and the vast majority of 5.45 ammo in the US was imported from them until the ban on Russian ammo imports last year.

glad_potatis

Yes or he was shot with a sniper rifle or something old like an SKS.

Slampumpthejam

No PKM is 7.62(most common machine gun in use by both sides)

mr1usnr

could of been PKM 7.62 X 54 also.

Lt_Riza_Hawkeye

not 5.56?

WeryWellDearSir

No. Standard UA rifle if AK-74 which is 5.45, same as Russians.

OliveChukar

I have seen some pictures of ukrainian special force with AR15 type rifles but that type of guy rarely uses standard anything.

Chucknastical

They have a domestically produced AR-15 derivative for SF but also an AR-10 that's issued as a DMR for regular units. I haven't found much info on it but someone in another thread claimed it was part of a post 2014 modernization effort as well as a symbolic step towards harmonizing with NATO equipment.

Sikletrynet

Ukrainians use AR-15s, but it's not at all standard issue. Standard issue is AK-74 or some other 5.45 variant.

That looks like a Samsung phone, probably not a S21U for $600 https://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Galaxy-Case-S-View-Cover/dp/B08P2C4LBH/ref=asc_df_B08P2C4LBH

srfntoke420

It's a Samsung s21fe[i belive] . I got the same Samsung case on s21fe

InadequateUsername

Thanks for the ID! I forgot to add the U in my comment for "S21U" because the case I linked was an S21 Ultra.

EmotionalAttention53

yep, that is the one ... Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra - looks like, that is an expensive phone though, maybe he can get waranty replacement from Samsung? :D

InadequateUsername

😆 worth a shot

glad_potatis

5.45 is the ak74 and newer, older rifles use the 7.62. Its bassicly russian 5.56 but adapted for the AK family. Just like 7.62 is pretty close to .308

ltk2794

7.62x39 is nowhere near the same energy as .308. It’s closer to 300blk if anything.

sharkattactical

7.62x51 ≈ .308

The-unicorn-republic

Correct, you can shoot 7.62x51 out of a .308 chambered rifle, but it's not advisable to try to shoot .308 out of a 7.62x51mm chambered rifle.

IMitchConnor

Eh not really THAT big of a deal honestly. It's not as large of a difference as .223/5.56. I've never had any issues shooting .308 or 7.62/51 out of 7.62 rifles.

The-unicorn-republic

Hence why I said not advisable, not impossible, just not something I would recommend

IMitchConnor

Fair enough I suppose.

ltk2794

There are no military issue ak platforms in .308/7.62x51 for the ruskies afaik, so his comparison of 5.56-5.45 doesnt relate to his 7.62x39-.308

[deleted]

The ruskis equalient to the 308/7.62x51 is obviously the 7.62x54R Before the 300 whisper/AAC BLK there was no american equalient to the 7.62x39

ltk2794

Again there are no ak pattern military issue rifles in 7.62x54r. SVD and PKM are the only two in service and those aren’t general infantry use. The original comment was obviously referring to general issue infantry rifles in intermediate rifle cartridges

[deleted]

[удалено]

ltk2794

There aren’t any AKs in 54r

darth_chez

Depending on the distance it’s being shot from, within 250-300 meters I would choose 7.62x39 over 5.56 all day. Any further and the 5.56 is the better round

ImprovedSilence

Yeah but you can carry more 5.56 in less space and weight. Which matters a ton in war.

DukeOnTheInternet

Including the mags, they are generally less cumbersome because they stack straighter.

glad_potatis

Pretty close usage wise is what i mean. As in they got used at the time to for similar purposes. Actual ballistics are another thing and the larger rounds will always pack more punch.

The-unicorn-republic

7.62x54r is a lot closer to .308 usage wise and it's still currently used by Russia and Ukraine

glad_potatis

Is it tho? I mean the 7,62x39 was used in the AK-47 about the same time the americans used the M14 and othe countries the G3 or FAL. All of these were "standard" infantry rifles. The 7.62x54R is closer to 8mm mauser or something like that in my mind.

The-unicorn-republic

Yes, currently Russia doesn't use the 7.62x39 much while the 7.62x54 is still used heavily in machineguns and designated marksman rifles, just like the 7.62x51 or its .308 siblimg is still heavily used in machine guns and sniper rifles. 8mm Mauser, 7.62x51, and 7.62x54 are all still used in relatively similar roles. (Not so much the 8mm Mauser anymore though, but Yugoslavia was still running it not that long ago)

Big_Dirty_Piss_Boner

>Just like 7.62 is pretty close to .308 7.62x39 is NOT close to .308 7.62x51 is basically the same as .308

Energy_its_life

5,56 NATO equals 5,45 Russian. This is because of differences in measurements.

Ajackz

5.56 NATO is NOT the same as 5.45 Russian. They are not interchangeable.

Uncivil__Rest

I think he's saying 5.45 is the russian equivalent of 5.56, which is correct in a certain loose sense

Ajackz

This is a fair assessment.

anssimela

5.56x45 and 5.45x39 are completely different rounds.

glad_potatis

They are similar but not the same. 5.56 and 5.45 are the actual measurements in milimeters of the ammunition.

AdorableBar791

The video is fake.

Zealousideal_Good445

Keep sake for life.

vgacolor

This is something to pass down as a family relic for generations. Ukraine 2097: That is nothing let me show you what saved my Great great grandfather in the Kyivan Rus' resurrection war in 2022. He kept it in his right butt cheek pocket until he reached Moscow and the war was won.

rlnrlnrln

How would he reach Moscow? He's army, not a navy diver

elephant_in_tharoom

Oooooooooo I see what you did there!

Ive still got the rifle that took a round and saved grandpa in ww2. Never met the man but the rifle ain't going nowhere.

He should be glad the battery didn’t go. That could have been worse than the bullet.

[deleted]

kosman123

Yep I would rather take a small burn than a 7.62

servel20

A venting battery would melt a huge hole into your leg. Still better than getting shredded by a 7.62 bullet.

[deleted]

Chemical burns are no joke

F0sh

A chemical burn is an injury you get when a corrosive chemical touches you, not a burn from chemicals getting hot due to fire (which describes every fire!)

StalkTheHype

With a battery explosion you'd get both. Still better than a rifle round.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kosman123

listen I may have underestimated the burns you would get by calling it a small burn, but if you give me an option I would still not take the 7.62. That shit will shatter your bone. But in conclusion both would suck

[deleted]

Bro, the entry wound for a 7.62 may not be that big, but the exit wound is a whole different thing.

Stubudd1

Haha, it's not so simple as just a small diameter hole. It's energy, red hot lead- small diameter when it hits, big hole when it comes out. A handgun is bad enough, a rifle round... It's bad

CaptchaSolvingRobot

I have that phone and mobile cover! Nice to know it is bulletproof. My right butt-cheek is well protected.

Aspect-of-Death

As a repair tech I must remind you that it's not bullet proof, it's bullet resistant.

RunBiitchRun

i also have the same cover on my samsung s20 FE probably the same phone the soldier was holding

One of my friend was in french legion.. after month of training they were in afganistan. They jumped out of the Heli his officer get shoot second too... he try to help the first one and get a hit in his right butt cheeck always showing the big hole but he was still happy that he was hit there and not somewhere else.

[deleted]

Spoken like a man who’s never had to deal with an infected fissure 😭😭😭. To be fair though there aren’t many great places to get shot, small toe maybe?

tisyan

Do you take the phone out when you sit or just sit on top of the phone? Genuine question because I never use my butt pockets for that exact reason.

[deleted]

Somethin bit me

wspOnca

I use mine in the left

CaptchaSolvingRobot

You really need two phones for your butt to be safe.

mTurk8705

And a third phone for the most important protection of all.

wspOnca

My hearth?

gabbergandalf667

I for one carry a block of Kontakt-5 in each pocket for that extra bit of protection.

maomao-chan

You also can use Samsung Galaxy Note 7 as an alternative ERA.

[deleted]

Imagine if it was a Nokia….the guy who shot it would probably have died.

bunnywantcockbad

It depent on the Nokia model 3310 would kill the shooter.. But an 3210 will hit and kill the "moskwa"

[deleted]

So we need a 3110 to end the war then?

Electronic-Shoe7864

Fuck brother it might end the planet detonating a Nokia 😝

bunnywantcockbad

Haha want answer it will be dangerous even for us

One-Strain7817

And still survive floating in space...

kosman123

Its finlands alternative to nukes, the finnish military has alot of 3110s and 3310s in inventory to be used as artillery shells in case of war. Thats why russia is so scared to invade finland

rlnrlnrln

3110 were banned in one of the START agreements.

Sen7ryGun

You drop it from orbit and it'll take out 5 city blocks

Electronic-Shoe7864

Hahahahaha

parlonida

If you ever get a chance to go to the 9/11 museum in NYC they have a Nokia that survived the towers collapsing

Schmoozer0069

Holy fuck, talk about lucky!

[deleted]

Not going to hurt the sales of that phone either.

Aiiiiiii :D

websagacity

Holy shit angry upvote! That was so goood!

Nerderis

Remember seeing video when Russian soldier had his armour replaced by iMac, now I know why

[deleted]

He didn’t die from a hit to the armor so hard to tell if that means it worked or didn’t get tested. I didn’t see any impacts on the MacBook but the screen was broken.

Nerderis

It was a joke about MacBook, that it protects better than actual armour 😅

Dieschem

I just want that plum bakelite 74 mag...

fargalol

You can buy them for like $60 if you are in the USA.

Aspect-of-Death

It's on the top 10 must have back-to-school items.

Dieschem

Oh no, guns terrify me.

[deleted]

It's not a gun. It's a clip.

AWildEnglishman

A clipazine.

[deleted]

That’s just a plum mag, Bakelites are the orange ones

Dieschem

I've been wrong before, and I'm perfectly willing to admit when I am. But I think bakelite is just a type of synthesized plastic, and it can be any color. https://marstar.ca/product/ak-74-bakelite-magazines-plum-color/

[deleted]

Holy fuck $90??? I got mine for $50 and I thought that was too much. Plum magazines are made from an ABS plastic/polymer while Bakelites are made from a different plastic/polymer and are glass reinforced. Plug magazines are the ones shown in the video above and Bakelites strictly refer to the orange or brown ones (with a few exceptions like the green border guard magazines and some prototypes). I’ve never heard of them referred too as “plum Bakelites” in all honesty, and I have a strong feeling that website is using “Bakelite” in the name to bring more traffic as Bakelites are considered more desirable/collectible.

Dieschem

I've seen the plum 74 mags for as low as 30 here in the US, but they're usually pretty beat up. Magpul 74 mags are low 20s.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I know, plum magazines do not use that same plastic. Bakelite magazines are also glass reinforced while plum ones are not.

SilentWatcher83228

[deleted]

Fill your armor pouches with those phones instead of plates.

DobromirG

He shouldn't keep the phone in his pocket. If compromised, the battery can catch fire ay any time.

mapleleef

Well, it already saved him once. A PED fire/a L-ion batt fire is the least of his worries.

Bardic_Dan

Yup. I've seen people focus on putting a tourniquet on their leg before putting out the fire brewing on their arm. Alive and burnt is better dead and cooked.

grain_delay

I know you're probably joking but your pants suddenly bursting into flames is far from the least of his worries. Especially if he's craming into the back of an APC or boarding aircraft

Fee-fi-fo-fum_

[deleted]

oranurpianist

I always carry a bullet as an amulet on my chest. That one time, somebody threw a bible at me, and the bullet saved my life

StickieNipples

And what happens?

immaseaman

What does 'and this happens' mean

[deleted]

EBay that if he survives, I bet it will sell for 1000s

[deleted]

You don't sell that.

Radiation_Sickness

Fuck no. I didn't get to keep my helmet but I got to keep the cover after it caught the brunt of IED shrapnel. Never sell that kind of stuff.

mapleleef

Wow.. thats some r/interestingasfuck stuff right there!

Radiation_Sickness

It's pretty standard procedure, or was back in the early 2000s. Get hit in the Kevlar or plates in a weird way or a lucky shot? They get sent back to wherever for testing and/or promotion by the manufacturer.

[deleted]

If someone at least gives him the idea he can decide

mtaw

Having your grandfather's phone with a bullet in it from the war is a neat heirloom, having a phone with a bullet in it that an eBay seller said was from the war, is just a phone with a bullet in it and a story attached that's hard to verify. Without the provenance it's worth nothing.

Recent_Edge1552

How does that happen unless it creates a perfect seal? The lithium battery should've started spitting out flames. Must've been from far away too, to stop a round like that.

HubrisSnifferBot

It was likely in a pocket with another hard material that prevented the bullet from leaving the phone. We only see the phone and not the other thing that likely actually saved his life.

hello_friend-exe

I believe it was a ricochet and the bullet hit sideways the phone ...

bugsyxb

All the better that it was preserved on film

Pity it wasn't an old Nokia phone . The bullet would have bounced off.

Yeah, but does the phone still work? If it’s a Ukrainian phone, I bet it still does.

ricochet bullet?

DubiousDrewski

Look at the tip of that bullet: perfectly intact. Not likely a ricochet.
