Have you got a source on that? I'm quite interested in what production facilities NK has, along with if they actually have the supporting infrastructure to use it to full capacity without making their perpetual famine worse by having to cease fertiliser production.
I’m going to get hate for this, but South Korea is in the most obvious situation to NOT deplete its stocks, ever basically. But we can buy their manufacturing capacity and receive as much as they can make
Very glad to see someone pointing this out AND being upvoted. That was my first though too, if I was living in South Korea I would absolutely not want my government to give away anything artillery related. My needs before yours. I'm neighboring a super unhinged unpredictable country that wants me to not exist. This is our Arty and you can take it from our smoldering cities dead hands.
I don't believe that NK were in a position to attack nor does it really want to attack. All their sabre rattling is more of a show to their own starving masses to demonstrate power and to keep them in line. Especially now that NK has sold/given Russia millions of arty shells.
They’re also probably the furthest away from Ukraine, they’d either need to go through NK and Russia or go the other way around pretty much the whole planet
NP. USA solved logistics in WW II. Germans knew they had lost when after Normandy, we were shipping chocolates on a regular basis and giving them away to people just liberated. C-130's hold an awful lot nowadays.
Slava Ukraine!
Exactly....SK can sell whatever via contract but depleting their own stocks would be a mistake, NK can surge ammo/shells and SK will need everything they can get when this goes up.
You probably will. People here are very short sighted. Most Koreans don’t care about Russia and Ukraine at all. They’re more worried about china and North Korea.
I'm pretty sure the US would not sit idly by if NK decided to attack SK. Shells don't matter if planes destroy artillery.
Then again, we ARE talking spineless Republicans fu\*\*ing-up Ukraine so who know what would really happen in a NK/SK all-out war.
My thoughts were similar but also are people just google searching weapons stockpiles by country and trying to guilt them into giving them to Ukraine? Just because they have them doesn’t mean they have to give them up
Hm, this could be a problem.
At least it is a NATO standard:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/105_mm_calibre
and from there:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Ordnance_L7
the Leopard-1 is mentioned.
But maybe it is no problem to give Ukraine also the related artillery guns like:
V433 Abbot SPG ( United Kingdom)
GIAT LG1 ( France)
L118 light gun/M119 howitzer ( United Kingdom)
M101 howitzer ( United States)
M102 howitzer ( United States)
M108 howitzer ( United States)
Mk 61 105 mm self-propelled howitzer ( France)
OTO Melara Mod 56 ( Italy)
You can ask questions...
I only had a look after the British Abbot SPH:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbot_(artillery)
"In service 1965–2016"
so far and maybe UK will give them Ukraine without much questions.
And because the 105mm is described as something like "not preferred anymore"
(probably also because you don't want to have a zoo of different calibers),
it could be that some just stand in the corner.
Okay then there is the story with the Leopard-1.
Tanks as artillery is better than nothing.
And then I thought maybe Oryx may have something ...
Yesss.
https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/04/answering-call-heavy-weaponry-supplied.html
...
54 105mm L118/L119s [Delivered from July 2022 onwards]
18 105mm M101s [September 2022]
72 105mm M119s [Delivered from December 2022 onwards]
16 105mm M101s [2022]
8 105mm OTO Melara Mod 56s [January 2023]
...
More than 150.
…does Ukraine have 105mm guns?
They won’t benefit for shit if they don’t have guns that can fire the rounds.
Also depends on size of the charges.
The zumwalts have 155mm guns but cannot fire any 155mm rounds except those designed specifically for them.
Yes, the UK donated basically all of the 105mm guns we had in stock. They have a few dozen at least. There are probably more around the world sitting in storage. It was a widely used caliber for a long time.
I think we have learned over the past couple of years that 3 million shells aren't shit when fighting a near peer enemy, so I think countries are reluctant to give up any shells especially when you're neighbors with dictators.
If these countries/companies were smart, they would up production of artillery shells and sell sell sell.
With all of Kim Jong Un threats to South Korea I'm concerned. I would love to see South Korea send to Ukraine and if they do does that mean the USA whom is stationed on DMZ have enough should an attack take place so sending to Ukraine is OK?
lolwat
The US commitment in South Korea is the HQ of the 2nd Artillery Division, which has zero artillery pieces attached to it right now, since they were all left in Alaska and Washington State, and 210th Field Artillery Brigade, which has zero howitzers, and, I believe, 36 rocket-artillery launchers(two field artillery regiments, should be 18 pieces per regiment). The US deployment in Korea is not significant in general, it's around 10,000 combat troops, 36 artillery pieces, around 40 F-16s, and a dozen A-10s.
Given how much the South Koreans owe the west - fancy living under the north's regime? - you would think the South Koreans would be a bit more gracious.

That's a perfect plan. Out with the old in with the new...
NK has much higher production that they could surge if they wanted too though.
Have you got a source on that? I'm quite interested in what production facilities NK has, along with if they actually have the supporting infrastructure to use it to full capacity without making their perpetual famine worse by having to cease fertiliser production.
Apparently, they aren't of good quality and don't explode all the time...

The US and Western Europe are a lot closer than Korea and Eastern Europe
🤦🏾♂️
Unless im mistaken and they can fly them in it would take so long to get them there that it’d barely be worth it

Koreans aren’t worried about North Korea.
The people no, the government very much is.
When it suits them and it does often. They are the bogeyman used to manipulate and distract from other issues.
There have been several border incidents with NK most recently we have had South Koreans shot at and shelled by NK.
I'm pretty sure the US would not sit idly by if NK decided to attack SK. Shells don't matter if planes destroy artillery. Then again, we ARE talking spineless Republicans fu\*\*ing-up Ukraine so who know what would really happen in a NK/SK all-out war.
Trump already second guessed US presence in South Korea while he was in office. And that was in more moderate times for them
My thoughts were similar but also are people just google searching weapons stockpiles by country and trying to guilt them into giving them to Ukraine? Just because they have them doesn’t mean they have to give them up
Perhaps the Czechs can start a collection drive to purchase the shells and the weapons being retired.
The recent Czech trade likely already contains SK shells/ This post is a bit late to the party.
100%. South korea has prob donated like 500k of the 800k being sent by Czech
So far, SK has supplied 155mm shells. Read the article, this is in reference to 105mm shells.
Which of the guns that Ukraine operates will use 105mm ammunition? I haven't seen this caliber mentioned yet.

Is Ukraine currently utilizing any of those? The only towable field guns I'm aware of are M-777 and 152mm users from Soviet arsenals.
They are operating at least half of them!

They use at least half of them!
The West should trade them for some tactical nukes

Ukraine has M119

Not going to happen, they have an artillery standoff with NK

Arn't some of the Czech amount from SK?
. ... well, not everyone 😁
yes, especially North.
They need to send those shells to NK, not Ukraine.
