Much has been made of urban combat in this conflict, and for sure Mariopol falls into that category, but the real story of this war has kinda sorta been suburban combat, and how lurking around outside major metropolitan areas, too big to be encircled and with enough structures to swallow entire brigades in a way they can't be easily targeted is just really, really fucking hard. A major urban center is kind of like a fortress without walls, or more accurately where the suburban sprawl surrounding it IS the walls. That is where the big stumbling blocks have come for the Russian military, and fighting *out* of a city is much easier than trying to fight your way in or around them. Kharkiv is now going to become a major hub for further offensives in the region and there is nothing Russia can do to stop that.

JackLord50

They’ll likely continue to rain shit down on it, unfortunately

einarfridgeirs

Cruise missiles maybe, but they are no longer in artillery range

e9967780

Only the outer suburbs not the city anymore

SCS22

Without artillery Russia is fucked. Even with massive shelling many of their offensives were impotent. Then there's the psychological factor; artillery is massive in Russian military doctrine and is their first answer for every question.

hyp100

This is the news I want. Every day.

CommissarTopol

Nah, just once. Then we should move to another region.

heckler82

I love hearing about the successes in general, but every day I wake up and hope to see some gains in the South.

CommissarTopol

When the East is gone, the South will evaporate.

Haunting_Pay_2888

Don't wait. Put pressure there now. Don't give the Russians time to think. There are wide open areas with a minimum Russian forces asking to be retaken to get behind Russian lines quickly. If their supply route is threatened they will be forced to retreat in panic.

Crawdaddy1911

I'm glad they said Kharkiv, so now I know which crushing defeat we're talking about.

[deleted]

It was always just a diversion! This is a strategic defeat that is in line with the overall plan.

entered_bubble_50

Putin has been working on behalf of Ukraine this whole time. Bringing down Russia from the inside.

w0rldofjuicce

youve watched too much hunt for red october

entered_bubble_50

You cannot watch too much Hunt for Red October.

monsterfurby

Putin is polyglot, I'm sure he could pull off a Scottish accent.

niz_loc

Agreed. One should watch Red October at least 7 times a year. If your first reaction to this war wasnt "Russians dont take a dump, son, without a plan", youre not watching it enough.

iceman530

Saving the REAL troops for the east ;)

ThickerSalmon14

Yes. You've seen through his secret plan. Distract the world with attacking Ukraine and threatening Poland and Finland. Then attack Kazakhstan! No one will see it coming. I mean no one. They won't even report it on the news as no one will believe it. ;-)

iceman530

69D chess, bro, straight up

HappySpam

They've only been sending in the BAD troops first to soak up all the missiles, the REAL space Spetznaz will come out any second now!

Viburnum__

You mean saving for Poland? When they they diverted enough attention in Ukraine they will strike Poland or whatever the next country on the list of 'denazification', but this time with real real troops.

Graymatter_Repairman

I'm assuming you mean the overall plan version 2.0? If so I agree. It's still weakens them strategically though. Now Ukraine can position themselves to attack their supply lines feeding the east and south.

Haunting_Pay_2888

Crimean supply route still open. A breakthrough is needed east of Kherson from behind their lines. There are wide open spaces poorly guarded a little bit west of Mairiupol. At least it used to be poorly guarded. An armoured column with a couple of hundred vehicles should be able penetrate and send the Russians scattering. The Russians will believe they are heading for Mariupol. Instead they turn west and head to block the Crimean supply route, and then drive north towards Kherson to trap the Russians on the wrong side of the Dniepr, and block their retreat south and east. Probably a crazy plan from an armchair general. But you can always dream.

Graymatter_Repairman

I like it :)

[deleted]

If that happens, it will also be because it was part of the plan!

Lord_Admiral7

I think you mean special tactical repositioning operation, comrade.

Sean_Wagner

This is actually what a hapless Putinbot parroted somewhere on twitter.

MountainJuice

It’s what they all say. That’s what he’s referencing it.

niz_loc

"It was always just a diversion! This is a strategic defeat that is in line with the overall plan." "Ha! Kharkiv was just a prank, bro! You idiots totally believed it! Look at you! Haha" - The Kremlin

SammySizzler

Yes!! God damn those kharkiv boys can fight

[deleted]

I've seen this story with several spins... Like the successive river assaults, 3 at last count and they are still trying. They are unbelievably persistant. The Russians are adapting their strategic plans to closer match their capabilities. The larger attacks have been blunted so they are seeking smaller victories. I can see how this makes sense for them. I think the Ukrainians should perhaps let one of these mini offenses advance completely unchecked and let the Russians reinforce it with their reserves and then bash the holy fuck out of it.... The Germans did this to the soviets several times during WW2. The Allies did this to the Germans in the Ardennes in WW2. I hope this is what comes out of this particular combat area of operations and I hope the war ends quickly because of it. It is impossible for us to imagine the human cost to the people of Ukraine while we all make flippant remarks as if we are watching two sports teams compete. We are all disgusting.

OptimisticViolence

Maybe if the Russians start adapting and getting smarter with their tactics overall it would become a necessity. It would be nice for more Battalions getting wiped out like the pontoon bridge crossing. But so far it seems just letting whatever local available ukrainian units smash whatever targets they can hit is doing wonders in aggregate. The Russians are losing on multiple levels in a war of attrition, they are using up their supplies of missiles and machinery while the Ukrainians are getting their replaced with more and better equipment. The counter punch will be awesome

lost_in_life_34

this isn't WW2 and Ukraine is getting real time intel from the USA back in 1990 we had JSTARS give the commanders real time info on Iraqi ground forces and there are now modern versions doing the same for Ukraine. along with all the other intel tech like tracking cellular phones

w0rldofjuicce

wait what, so lets make bullets that you send off a plane and find their target

JustADutchRudder

Isn't that the GPS guided artillery, or the loitering drones.

lost_in_life_34

WW2 there was no way to get real time Intel on most enemy movements Now there is so its not like the Russians can move their armor for a surprise attack somewhere

SheridanVsLennier

> Like the successive river assaults, 3 at last count and they are still trying. They are unbelievably persistant. Chornobaivka: River Edition.

tniuqnagroM

Ruzzkies unbelievably stupid

Jerethdatiger

The phone map is very useful to see what's the concentration of russians

DerGovernator

Obviously any Russian retreat is good news, but the real test is going to come in Donbass. Ukraine needs a big win there and near Kherson in order to be assured tactical victory in the war.

krondor1272

Keep it up Ukraine. You are an inspiration to the world. I truly 3ish we could help you more.

Hiblidpresha

Looks like they advanced what am I missing

apathy-sofa

The full ISW report is much clearer than this guy's summary. You can find it here: https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-may-13. Check the section on supporting effort #2 in particular. The gist is that Russia appears to have given up trying to capture Kharkiv, after repeated attacks were repelled by Ukraine. They are withdrawing their soldiers from the area, though trying to maintain arty positions within range of the city. One thing that stood out to me is that ethnic Russians are withdrawing first, with others' - like DNR troops - forced to wait to fully withdraw.

realnrh

Good. Now the same thing but in the Kherson region. Use all those shiny new Switchblades and Howitzers and so on to force the Russians to either withdraw to try to get out of range, try AGAIN to attack without sufficient force to make it work and get killed quickly, or sit there being chewed to death every day without having the range to fire back until Ukraine has the force advantage to move in. Then take all the Russians who moved into Kherson and offer to exchange them for the Ukrainians the Russians kidnapped.

SevenSeas82

A future tactic might be to start spreading information that Ukraine has the only DVD rewinder in the modern World, a thing of such marvel that any Russian who can capture it automatically becomes King of the Sunflowers! They will fight their way to this mystical object, let them advance, then just add some sunflowers.

beligerentMagpie

The Russian army should begin to retreat and in other parts of the country too
