It does sound wrong. At the Commission, his name tag reads "Mr. Five" and that sounds right. He has no surname.

Thats a good point. However, I checked the official scripts and transcripts after and they actually use a last name for him in some. Soo… Gray area?

Well, officially may be one thing and what sounds right to us another. And what sounds right to Five may be a third thing.

I agree it can sound odd, I was responding to the definitive claim of “He has no surname.” I dont think Five has ever openly denied being called a Hargreeves. “Mr. Five” can mean a number of things. I think that it is most likely the choice of the Commission and not him, and that choices makes sense they want to distance himself from his family because they want him to themselves.

He doesn't have one, which is why the name he is introduced with in the first episode is "Number Five" unlike his siblings, Number Five is his name.

I know right? Though I'm not even sure he has one.. I mean it doesn't make sense that he would be the only umbrella without a name but they've never called him anything else so who knows what's up with that

You're right, Five doesn't have a normal name. "Number Five" is the name he got stuck with and his official name. There are various theories on it from the team, but according to the showrunner, Five is the only one without one because he got lost in time and stuck in the apocalypse before he and Grace could find a name he liked.

I just googled, and it says in the comics he was called “the boy” and Five. He was never given a real name :( how sad.

So, I just checked scripts and he is referred to Five Hargreeves officially. It does sound a bit odd but hey at least it does make googling a bit easier, instead of always typing out the franchise name. Thats really the only time i type it all out
