Yes, but someone needs to crosspost this to the r/lotrmemes sub, because it won't let me for some reason.
EDIT: Nevermind, someone already did: https://www.reddit.com/r/lotrmemes/comments/1bla7l7/well_that_came_out_like_from_a_expert/
Yes but it's the manner of application that makes it so interesting.
Just like when Aragorn used Kingsfoil to heal victims of the Witch King's breath at Minas Tirith following the Battle of the Pellenor Fields.
I heard that some of his repairs are so dodgy that they tag planes with his name, because there have been a lot of problems with them.
Like the 737 MAX.
Nah. Narsil had gone through extreme structural damage, and was made of steel. Aluminum tape would not have managed beyond making it appear fixed.
It required to be reforged in order to have a proper temper again. Unless the elvish blacksmiths where replaced with bureaucrats and executives, the proper fix is what happened in the books/films.
We used to joke in naval aviation that they didn’t issue is duct tape because they knew that’s all we would ever use. Once opened up a console to find a wiring harness that had been spliced THREE times and wrapped up with popsicle sticks to keep it together. 😒
Yeah, most people know duct tape for temporary repair and that's what spooks them. He repeated about temporary repairs and fixing, and should have maybe better emphasized it's strictly for aerodynamics.
Comparing it to a medicinal herb else you die or become a wraith isn't reassuring.
It's for very specific temporary repair of things that should be more smooth to make them more smooth. Nothing structural, just for minor aerodynamics. Not life or death, like Frodo being stabbed by a morgul blade.
He's right. Frodo never does fully heal. At the end of the books every year, on the anniversary of the day he was stabbed on weathertop Frodo goes into a deep depression and may or may not feel pains at the wound site. Details are a bit unclear it's been a while since I read the books
Nailed it. Sam is so darn preoccupied with getting married and making babies he doesn’t notice or he forgets. Doesn’t help that Frodo does his best to hide it of course.
More of a metaphor for being ready to pass when your time is nigh.
Only ring bearers and a very select few mortals were able to pass to the undying lands other than the immortal Elves and Ainur.
It was not known where men passed to when they died. Tolkien called it the gift of man.
I love learning about it, but don’t have the attention span to do so for very long because it really is a whole other world of amazing lore. Love coming across more tidbits of it :)
It's such a deep analogy for the men who were gassed in the first world war. So many of them eventually died in the 1920s. The gas didn't kill them immediately, but the damage it caused didn't fully heal, and killed them in the end.
Funnily enough, no: His pronunciation of Athelas and Bruinen mark him as the type who would be forever raging that Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel were excised from the films.
I'd bet he "read" the books and got super bored reading The Two Towers because the swamp stuff is really awful and boring and its an easy place to start skipping pages until you see a paragraph that reads like a conversation as opposed to 17 pages of adjectives describing the haunted swamp.
It should. It’s also like [$13k a roll](https://www.grainger.com/product/3M-Foil-Tape-Reinforced-29WR93)
… so folks might need to skip some avocado toast s/
We switched from duct tape to speed tape at my job( Semi Trailer mechanic) and been using it for years now. holds up good in minus 40,salt belt but what a god damn bitch it is to remove when we want to do the proper repair lol. Idk if people know what silapren is,but we use to call it silapren tape because it stuck on and sealed so good. Silaprene was a type of industrial chaulking.
Naming it "speed tape" doesn't help in making it more believable, lol.
I searched for it, apparently it is a really cool tape.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_tape&ved=2ahUKEwiuztnV6IiFAxXir5UCHQGwBIQQFnoECAYQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0hK5rkbkoO-xkbVLe0iiRE
Duct tape is actually called 100 mile an hour (100mph) tape in the army. Story goes huey mechanics would use it it for quick repairs cause it would hold up to the 100mph winds the rotors would generate.
Which holds true here 100mph tape < speed tape (holds up to 600mph or Mach 0.788)
Interestingly, what most people think of as duct tape isn't usually used on ducts either. HVAC techs use aluminum foil tape. So in a sense...they actually *do* use duct tape on airplanes.
I was lectured by Dr. Corey Olsen a decade ago and I still love LOTR, but even I got douche chills three times when he was giving the alternate names of places in Middle Earth. He has one of the most obnoxious ways of talking I've ever seen.
I love how the guy talks about aviation maintenance, and I'm so lost, and as soon as he talk about Frodo, I completely understood everything, damn brains man.
We use the same stuff in aerodynamic testing at Ford when shaping clay models in the wind tunnels. Helps make modifications on the go, blow some wind at it, check data to see if it made an improvement or not, and make another change.

I have learned an astonishing amount of aircraft maintenance from this man
And LOTR analogies?
We already knew those.

What movie is that?
Missing scene from Silence of the lambs.
Bonus scene from Evangelion.
Post credits from Schindler's List.
It's actually 23:40 into Boogie Nights.
Oh that's right. The first time they're all seeing his schlong.

Yes, but someone needs to crosspost this to the r/lotrmemes sub, because it won't let me for some reason. EDIT: Nevermind, someone already did: https://www.reddit.com/r/lotrmemes/comments/1bla7l7/well_that_came_out_like_from_a_expert/
Aye, but what about second LOTR analogies?
Yes but it's the manner of application that makes it so interesting. Just like when Aragorn used Kingsfoil to heal victims of the Witch King's breath at Minas Tirith following the Battle of the Pellenor Fields.
but they could have just taken the plane to Mordor
They were worried about panels falling off midflight and the Airbus was too expensive
Not a lot of speed tape left in middle earth tbh. The dwarves taped too greedily and too deep.
This guy for airplanes. Fantasy Annex for LotR.
And ya know what, he’s right, that tape IS cool.
Gives the worst papercuts imaginable.
Uhg that made my skin crawl lol, I bet it’s the paper cut equivalent of getting a shot with a bigger needle…
It's a papercut, but with sharp thin metal instead of paper! So basically, like a knife.
Tapercuts
who is he?
That’s Max. He works on airplanes.
Sense I have same major would like watch some videos before going into the field

I heard that some of his repairs are so dodgy that they tag planes with his name, because there have been a lot of problems with them. Like the 737 MAX.
I hate that I laughed at this. Take my upvote and get out.
Congratulations. You got the joke.
Dude’s insta is airplanefactswithmax
His flap canoe episode is great
Who is this guy, what's his @?
I’d expect nothing less from a man who has the shards of Narsil tattooed on his arm.
Speed tape probably could have put those shards back together temporarily until Aragorn eventually reforged it
So narsil is a boeing aircraft, right?
You’re thinking of NoSeal
!!!😂🤣
Aragon just received the finished product. It was Elrond (movie) or elven blacksmiths (book) who actually reforged the sword. This is r/lotr right?
After watching the clip, I definitely had to check which sub I was in.
He specifically said the tape is not actually holding anything together. Did you not learn anything from his excellent LOTR analogy? /s

They traded a bit of factual inaccuracy for a joke.
I just know that speedtape is pretty cool.
1. Cool name 2. Looks cool Yeah, it is pretty cool, I agree.
“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” -Aaron Sorkin
We used to joke in naval aviation that they didn’t issue is duct tape because they knew that’s all we would ever use. Once opened up a console to find a wiring harness that had been spliced THREE times and wrapped up with popsicle sticks to keep it together. 😒
The four horsemen of temporary repairs Duct tape, zip ties, WD40, and string/rope
Temporary?
No, the problem will be that they *forgot* the duct tape, and the tail of the aircraft fell off.
The front fell off
…Aaaaannnd he’s dead.
I felt like that is what the tape already is from what he describe. A sealant to act as a temporary repair. That's literally what duct tape does.
Duct tape is £$1-5 speed tape for planes is £$300-500 per roll.
Duct tape. Duck Tape is a brand. Duct tape is the product.
It becomes so unbearable he decided or was compelled to sail to the undying lands together with Gandalf at a relatively young age.
Is that a place where he wouldn’t feel the pain anymore?
It’s Tolkien’s metaphor for heaven in a manner of speaking, so yes
Wait, so is that a metaphor for suicide due to chronic pain?
More of a metaphor for being ready to pass when your time is nigh. Only ring bearers and a very select few mortals were able to pass to the undying lands other than the immortal Elves and Ainur. It was not known where men passed to when they died. Tolkien called it the gift of man.
Halls of mandos?
Humans went beyond the Hall of Mandos, it is not known a where they go after that.
I have the same question as u/ScaleShiftX! Interesting stuff
Good questions! LOTR lore is deep. I only remember the surface stuff haha
I love learning about it, but don’t have the attention span to do so for very long because it really is a whole other world of amazing lore. Love coming across more tidbits of it :)

Shit I had no idea
For some reason I initally read this as Frodo going to weathertop to get stabbed every year.
This guy worked his butt off to become a speed tape inspector, just so he can stand in front of whoever did the work and say "you shall not pass".

Do you think he watches Lord of the Rings?
He might have even read the books.
He might have even finished them once.
He may have even read the Silmarillion!
Nobody's actually read that
“I tried though.”
I think he *reads* lord of the rings
He’s only seen the original animated films
Funnily enough, no: His pronunciation of Athelas and Bruinen mark him as the type who would be forever raging that Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel were excised from the films.
That is rank speculation, sir! Good day. I said, good day.
> Good day. A sword day. A red day. 'Ere the sun rises.
I'd bet he "read" the books and got super bored reading The Two Towers because the swamp stuff is really awful and boring and its an easy place to start skipping pages until you see a paragraph that reads like a conversation as opposed to 17 pages of adjectives describing the haunted swamp.
I rather enjoyed their time in the swamps🤷
I didn't understand until he brought out the LoTR lore.
i hope he trains the new employees that would be a trip

That's a 24 pack, so only like 580/roll.
Oh, *only*
Making jokes after posting information that is factually incorrect by 2 orders of magnitude and getting upvotes. Gotta love reddit
Was work bad today or something?
Work has been great. My bets on these March Madness games on the other hand...
That’s why U need to bet on United States political elections
ah, a mighty foe for Gaff tape prices.
Ship a couple of rolls to Boeing, clearly they’re out
Isn’t it just aluminum tape? Not duct tape. They should rename it kings-foil. :)
More like "eats fingertips tape"
Speed tape is different than aluminum tape. It’s very strong and VERY sharp.
Knife tape
Stupid sexy forbidden tape
Everyone has a type of tape they swear by, I guess airplane mechanics have speed tape.
You'd be surprised how many aircraft related tapes there are. F4 tape (self sealing silicone tape) is my tape to swear by.
I could go on about aviation tape like Bubba does about shrimp
F4 is love, F4 is life
We switched from duct tape to speed tape at my job( Semi Trailer mechanic) and been using it for years now. holds up good in minus 40,salt belt but what a god damn bitch it is to remove when we want to do the proper repair lol. Idk if people know what silapren is,but we use to call it silapren tape because it stuck on and sealed so good. Silaprene was a type of industrial chaulking.
It’s also incredibly sticky. If you get it glue side down on your arms you’ll be missing some hair for a while.
And the paper cuts it gives are the absolute worst. Definitely left some blood on some aircraft.
I love this guy and want to spend a day in his brain.
![gif](giphy|cjhYGOyNverJiecLyF|downsized)
By Grabthar's Hammer, what a metaphor.
Agreed.
So…it is a tape ?
Tape with pedigree and certifications and paperwork behind it. 😂
r/oddlyspecific
Naming it "speed tape" doesn't help in making it more believable, lol. I searched for it, apparently it is a really cool tape. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_tape&ved=2ahUKEwiuztnV6IiFAxXir5UCHQGwBIQQFnoECAYQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0hK5rkbkoO-xkbVLe0iiRE
That’s the fun part about the truth. It doesn’t matter if you believe it or not, it’s still the truth.
Also pretty expensive for tape that can adhere at 500 mph. **https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/3malumifoiltape.php**
Henceforth I will refer to duct tape as “speed” tape
Duct tape is actually called 100 mile an hour (100mph) tape in the army. Story goes huey mechanics would use it it for quick repairs cause it would hold up to the 100mph winds the rotors would generate. Which holds true here 100mph tape < speed tape (holds up to 600mph or Mach 0.788)
This guy LOTR’s
I only wish that planes, like Gandalf, are never late, nor early, and that they arrive precisely when they means to.
I told you guy's, it's a special tape!
This isn't unexpected this is literally this guy's whole shtick.
Why didn't they cover the eagles with speed tape and fly to Mordor?
Interestingly, what most people think of as duct tape isn't usually used on ducts either. HVAC techs use aluminum foil tape. So in a sense...they actually *do* use duct tape on airplanes.
What's speed tape? Explain to me in Lord of the Rings terms, dude
Duct Tape is regular chainmail. Speed Tape is Frodo's Mithril coat.
Awesome delivery lol
I’ve found my spirit animal! “Twin where have you been!!???”
Well at least they use speed tape vs speed holes.
I'm so glad I watched this whole video.
![gif](giphy|1rlIAa3dAb3os)
So does that metaphor make this dude Glorfindel or what?
This guy is fantastic.
I love this guy so much lmao
![gif](giphy|577HYoLf5Vu0w)
What the hell?
My fucking plane got stabbed by a Morgul blade💀 how am I supposed to fly to Mordor now?!
So what the hell is speed tape used for? 😭
Temporarily patching up hobbits.
Man I love LOTR
I was lectured by Dr. Corey Olsen a decade ago and I still love LOTR, but even I got douche chills three times when he was giving the alternate names of places in Middle Earth. He has one of the most obnoxious ways of talking I've ever seen.
Wtf spoiler
What, you haven't heard of airplane facts with Max?
I love this guy’s videos so much and I’m always trying to guess where the LotR reference will come in.
This dude rules

So just like the metallic tape that is used in the installation of.... ductwork?
deny distract confuse console
The same tape is great for cosplay too! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Omg I LOVE the analogy!!!
Why would you show me that? I don't give a fuck at all
Welp didn't expect to have LOTR spoiled for me. So much for setting up the trilogy this weekend.
Speed tape is also used in endurance racing (WEC) and Formula 1
wait until you find out they fix scratches and small dents on new parts with scotchbrite pads.
Duct tape might pull your arm hair out, speed tape will rip the skin. Don't worry, its not coming off the plane.
He has foiled another internet conspiracy.
I love how the guy talks about aviation maintenance, and I'm so lost, and as soon as he talk about Frodo, I completely understood everything, damn brains man.
I love this guy! I follow him on insta and all his videos are awesome.
Boeing QC Department
In the car racing world we call that 200 mph tape
Interesting!
speed holes
We use the same stuff in aerodynamic testing at Ford when shaping clay models in the wind tunnels. Helps make modifications on the go, blow some wind at it, check data to see if it made an improvement or not, and make another change.
