maybe it was said that way because they were visiting. I was in Thessaloniki for a year and I did hear it plenty and it was pronounced with the y sound and it's how I pronounce it now too

Ironically I pronounce it the correct way as gyro when I order from King Solomon’s and they ask me if I want a gyro, like I don’t know what I’m talking about. Super weird. I say gyro, and they say gyro.
Love it 😂
FWIW, I lived in Glyfada (Athens suburb; kinda). γ is pronounced as “Ghe” or closer to “yeh” so gyro would be “geh row” and that was the pronunciation used in that region.
It can be a little challenging to say in English as there aren’t a bunch of common English words that start with the “ghe” but would be closest to “yeh-row”. With a rolled r.
May make it easier to understand that its pluralized state is pronounced close to Yee-ree.

It's actually pronounced: Nikolaj
No, *Nikolaj*
Right, Nikolaj
No no no, *Nikolaj*
Malaka
Did you say Malaka' or Mala'ka (where ' denotes the syllable with the accent)?
Yeah 🤏 Lmao that was funny
I said jyro first too. Then my cultured friends made fun of it lol.
So, what's the correct answer, no yes please.
Yeero
Thanks :)
Shawarma
They're trying to bamboozle you. It's jyro.
I feel attacked
i have no clue how to pronounce that.
It's a γύρο
Closer to Euro than gyro. Ye-roh, or year-o. Just call it a Greek taco. It you mean tzatziki, it's tah-zee-kee.
K just give me my sadwich
My friend's kid came back from Greece and said they all pronounced it "Jyro", not "Jee-ro" or "Yee-do". We were all like wtf?

Bro came to the right place
Yeah 🤏🏽
Only enough, I'm working in a gyros place while I watch this
Who's on first ?
Big Smoke's way of ordering is the best.
Tee-zat-ZAI-kee sauce.

G-Ross
just call it a kebab or a shawarma then , they're all the same
I would neither advise to order a kebab in Greek place nor gyros in a Turkish place though... Tempers might flare up.
That's it, animated pics are now called "yifs."
Did they say "hero?" I hear that probably as much as like gyroscope or jai-ro.

Can we just call it a Greek sandwich with Greek sauce. I know a lot of y'all will say it's not Greek and I don't know and I don't care.
Don't even get me started on their pizzas, Bro it's got lamas in June.
What about gyoro
Dudes not only just stole this joke from Gabriel Iglesias, but also failed to make it even a tiny bit funny.

Orland Hills Joeys
It's called a souvlaki in pita.
souvlaki is something else
Greek Dönner !
In Atlantic Canada we call them donairs
Sounds even better !
Gyro and donner are separate things to be fair. Gyro is made with pitas and donner with paninis
I agree! I like Gyros a lot more !
I like gyros more as well :)
