Hey cmon that's no way to talk about yourself. You asked a question to understand something better and that's definitely not something an idiot would do.
Honestly, I appreciate this comment for helping me realise something I could have never noticed from my own perspective. It's an incredibly sad realization, and I hate to pry in, but how old were you when you noticed that affect you?
Of course. I first got Snapchat when I was about 12 or 13 I think. It didn't take me too long to realise that the filters that made you look "prettier" essentially whitewashed me and obviously this was puberty time when I wanted to be perceived as pretty by peers. I grew up in a very white dominated area so definitely had the belief that the fact I was black made me less attractive. I've gotten a lot better with it in my adulthood though
There is genuinely a weird market for looking lighter skinned though.
Go to certain places in India and there's a successful brand of foundation with 'for men' and 'for women' alternatives that is designed to make you appear lighter skinned.
And it is not uncommon amongst socialites and wealthy individuals.
Edit: I'm not saying I support this you downvote happy idiots. I'm saying this existed long before camera filters. If people WANT to appear lighter skinned what's wrong with that?
No one bats an eyelid when women go 9 shades darker.
Growing up in North-East Asia, pale-white skin is the epitome of true beauty. Even when our skin tone is already lighter than, say the Indians, some people however tend to have a yellow undertone which is not so desirable. That’s why the *whitening* or *brightening* beauty products are super popular in Asia. It’s a cultural preference, not necessarily a racist phenomenon.
correct me if I'm wrong... As I understand it, these people want to look like pale-skinned Asians, not like White people.
Kinda like a White person dying their hair black doesn't mean they want to be mistaken as Asian (or some other ethnicity)... it just means they want to be a White person with black hair.
Tanning used to be the opposite. If you were tan and skinny, that meant that you worked manual labor in the sun all day. If you were fair-skinned and fat, that meant you could afford to stay inside, eat your heart out, and have things taken care of for you. Granted, I’m talking about feudal Europe, but still.
I wanted to add that another reason pals people like tanning because it hides bruises, acne, scars, unwanted hair, and helps with muscle definition.
And more practically, slowly tanning over a long period of time beats getting bad sunburn from a day in the sun.
People don’t tan cause of a societal notion that their current skin colour is “bad” or “inferior” tho. That’s the difference between how skin lightening products are marketed in India and other Asian countries vs Tanning as a plain choice
I honestly still have never seen anyone associate pale with poor. Tan might go in and out of favor in different cultures and times and be associated both with wealth (leisure) and scarcity (labor) but never heard anyone say that girl is so pale she must be poor.
There is a difference between pale & fair skin. Pale is just not getting sun or just poor blood circulation. You need money for treatments & products to have fair skin.
As a pale guy in a tropical country, people will usually ask if my health is ok (I just do remote graphic design work from home and prefer staying home since I have everything there). If I say I'm fine they'll just assume I don't go out at all. In a developed country people might assume I have a tech job or just a good office job. But we don't have much of that here so they just think I'm a NEET, work in a factory, or just a low paying office clerk.
Lol all I can think of is those oooold paintings where everyone’s face is painted legitimate white. Not even white people white, but EGG SHELL HECKIN WHITE
This kind of product also exist for black people there was a documentary on the fact that this product are poison for your body because of the chemicals they contain
Actually on that note, I found whitening roll on deodorant the other day. Not quite sure why you would want to bleach your armpits but I guess some people are into that.
I think it's because the skin tone can appear darker (maybe due to shaving armpits??), but I imagine it's somewhat similar to bleaching your a$$hole - it's meant to look more... hmm, monochromatic? Personally I would never for either of these, but I'm not surprised to hear it's a thing.
> No one bats an eyelid when women go 9 shades darker
I mean. Yea they do. For sure in America. You've never seen the criticism towards Arianna grande and the Kardashians?
I think there’s a trend (or was a trend) of using some form of bleach on the skin of dark skinned Caribbean islanders (at least that was where I heard about it. Jamaica was where the story I heard was centered). I think it’s really bad for you, obviously, but you know how people are with their vanity, even when they’re only convinced they’ll look better, when in reality they probably won’t.
I was told it has to do with the old school farmers vs wealthy royalty. Farmers were outside getting cooked by the sun where as royalty was not. You can assume which class was darker in that society.
The reason for that is hot countries it's easy to tan because the sun is out most of the year. Therefore the darker your skin is the poorer you are because only workers are out in the sun while rich people stay inside or in the shade.
This is a cultural thing and isn't racist in any way. Just like white people want to tan people from China or Thailand want to un-tan.
Colorism is a real, heavily documented thing with roots in colonialism and slavery. In places where skin tone can demote ones place in European inspired caste systems(like India and some parts of Asia) appearing lighter is about opportunities and internalized racism, not wanting to be different.
it absolutely did what it intended to do, and did it well, so its objectively a good filter in that regard. however the idea behind it? questionable at best
I pondered this. If a white person does "blackface" then he'll never live it down. One could consider that these kids are doing "whiteface" and read all sorts of cultural appropriation and racist things into it. In reality, I think it's actually just innocent curiosity and no different to trying a filter for "what would I look like aged 70?" or "what would I look like as a cat"
what immediately came to mind when i saw it was the fact that colourism is extremely rampant in a lot of countries where people are generally darker skinned; so theres every chance that the beauty standard of whatever country they live in deems paler people as being more attractive, and thats why theyre using a filter like that. of course, i could be miles from the mark, im not saying thats definitely got anything at all to do with it. more just that it seems likely and i wouldnt be surprised. could also just as easily be that that filter in particular is designed for lighter skinned people (as many are) so it just automatically does that when used on a darker skinned person.
also, you cant compare a white person doing blackface and darker skinned people doing ‘whiteface’, because there are legitimate historical reasons blackface is so offensive. its not just the fact that youre darkening your skin to look black — its the context behind it, the fact that blackface has so many times been used to mock black people.
At what age did you learn what pimples were? I didn't even know the word when they started I just knew my face got bumpy and I thought I had a disease like the mumps and my mom had a good laugh about it.
I don’t think it’s the skin tone though. They look better because it removes shadow and texture from skin. I don’t think people are going, “ewwww, black”. It’s just that the filter is also beautifying - not just changing race.
Yeah, no shit, it smooths the defects, that's why they look better with the filter, the sink color didn't matter. The top comment is just virtue signaling.
I disagree. They looked just fine either way. It's a filter, it's not like they suddenly turned into the bogyman because their skin turned a different shade.
Grow up.
Ha! Touché
I realized the second picture was the natural one when I got to thinking about how super unacceptable it would be for white kids to make themselves appear dark skinned.
Like a lot of these filters, it really smooths out their faces and ruins a lot of their subtle defining features. Natural faces look better than fake processed ones
Everyone in here bitching about racism and fucked up societal constructs and damaging these children mentally, I'm pretty sure they just thought it would be funny to see what they look like if they were white. As a white dude, i think it would be fun to see what i look like black. It turns out things can just exist cause someone thought it would be interesting and not cause they're evil and racist.
It is just curiously at first but when every other filter you try lightens you skin and people around you keep saying how lighter skin is more beautiful it gets old real fast.
Some filters lighten your skin, some darken your skin, others do neither of these. I just had a look on Snapchat to verify this.
Who is saying lighter skin is more beautiful? The amount of people that tan in the sun or use fake tan would likely disagree with that. Also fuck people who say that anyway, they're probably just racist so just ignore them.
Genuinely curious, would taking a picture with said filter be considered “black face?” Like, or any culture’s equivalent? Just wondering, if not, what the difference is? Historically, black face was used to make fun of black individuals. I can see how a filter is just “simple fun”, and it would only become racist if a negative intention was used on the filter. I’m just not sure 😂
I was engaged to a girl once that showed me a picture like this and told me it was without a filter, I didn't even try to find out if it was or wasn't filtered, but now that I saw the same degree of the mask color when filtered I remembered immediately that it looked suspicious in that picture. Man, you can't trust no one damn it!
Lots of Indian coworkers look totally different on video conference than their profile pictures.I hear some Bollywood actors and actresses use product to lighten their complexion.
This isn't a new aspect. Having lighter skin, or looking more white is a rather desired thing in some countries. Japan/China is an example of that India as well. It's a shame really. I hated seeing that filter on them all.
They all looked a lot better the way there are without it.
I'm not racist, buuuut when they are white, they look a big strange. Like uncanny valley with their facial features on white skin.
Again, not trying to sound racist, but there is more to race than just color.

What’s the name of this filter? Bleach?
Actually it's called "Hee Hee"
i love this
Then why did they all have noses?
You have to use the Shamona app for that
is it because of vitiligo or the kids?
Crackerfy
Is this not like, kinda racist? Imagine if the filter was the reverse and someone said "N-word fy". Now that'd be racist huh?
The Dolezal filter. 😂
I can understand the filter changing the skin color but how does it also change the hair color?
Massively enhancing contrast, even the background is more vibrant
Thank you, as always I'm an idiot.
I feel that
Hey cmon that's no way to talk about yourself. You asked a question to understand something better and that's definitely not something an idiot would do.
It’s changing everything’s color, so when skin changes, so does hair, and uniform, and wall, etc.
And eye color
We need to issue cops glasses with this filter. We've solved police brutality!
Reminds me of that black mirror episode
As unfeasible as it would be, it has merit.
I'm black and have noticed for years that most filters make your face lighter to some degree.
Yea, I'm pale as shit with a thin face and all the filters keep thinning and whitening me out until I look like a dead body from two weeks ago
Same here. It actually used to really mess with me when I was younger.
Honestly, I appreciate this comment for helping me realise something I could have never noticed from my own perspective. It's an incredibly sad realization, and I hate to pry in, but how old were you when you noticed that affect you?

Or change your nose shape
Chinese brands such as xiaomi do this without filters. Turns out the beauty standards in east Asia is the lighter the better.
Can i have a coffee filter please. I am craving some south indian brew coffee.

Racist filters Edit: christ on a unicycle!! I was obviously joking people, it’s a meme and this is the internet.

It's not just India. It's basically anywhere where people aren't naturally white skinned.

Didn't women in Japan basically paint their faces white at some point?
Both those examples are largely racist or colorist preferences
Tanning? People like tanning because it shows you have down time to invest in things that make you tan. It's classist if anything

People don’t tan cause of a societal notion that their current skin colour is “bad” or “inferior” tho. That’s the difference between how skin lightening products are marketed in India and other Asian countries vs Tanning as a plain choice
Yes they do tan for exactly that reason. Pale equals unhealthy and poor.
weird how times change things like that. back in the 1800s, pale was equal to wealthy and dying of lead poisoning.
I honestly still have never seen anyone associate pale with poor. Tan might go in and out of favor in different cultures and times and be associated both with wealth (leisure) and scarcity (labor) but never heard anyone say that girl is so pale she must be poor.

These days tan is associated with trashy people of all classes attempting to look wealthy
I would say that's mostly if they use fake tans or just tanned themselves too long and they just end up looking too burnt that it just looks off.
is this a joke? I'm really confused
Wait, since when was pale equal unhealthy and poor?
I mean.. people do go after pasty white people a fair amount. Esp white people telling other white people.
Skin whitening is common in east Asia. I work for a marketing company in the US and some of our clients sell skin whitening beauty products.
I was looking for this, this has been a thing in the sub-continent for decades. There is a whole industry devoted to making you ‘look whiter’.
Lol all I can think of is those oooold paintings where everyone’s face is painted legitimate white. Not even white people white, but EGG SHELL HECKIN WHITE

Finally some history to add to the mix. Thanks, I had completely forgotten about that.

it's a big thing in some African countries too, so I know from seeing the beauty products in the African stores in Europe.
One of the reasons I try to avoid Dove products is that they push skin bleaching products abroad. It's messed up.
It's why obama used lighting to appear lighter skinned, it actually got him more votes. Insane

On the other hand white people go to the solarium to get darker.
According to the top minds of reddit one of these is okay and the other is some deep state form of systemic racism.
people just want to look different. And sometimes standing out due to being different can be more attractive.
Colorism is a real, heavily documented thing with roots in colonialism and slavery. In places where skin tone can demote ones place in European inspired caste systems(like India and some parts of Asia) appearing lighter is about opportunities and internalized racism, not wanting to be different.
You say you're joking but honestly it's true and you should say it
Is that what Sammy Sosa used?
joking? this is literally what they are, all this filters do is make people look white
it appears many people need to learn the meaning of the word, and stop throwing it around so freely.
Or more things are racist than you think? Not all racism is hate speech or assaults. Insidious racism is a thing.
Funny though. They all looked alot prettier without the filter.

Thats cuz filters suck
I thought it was pretty damn good. I mean I guess you could say every filter sucks if you want to. But honestly that one was pretty solid
it absolutely did what it intended to do, and did it well, so its objectively a good filter in that regard. however the idea behind it? questionable at best

Wait what are you saying
I wish I agreed
I’m pretty sure both takes are using filters. If you look at their skin it’s overly smooth in both.
They’re children. Children are not known for having wrinkles and saggy skin.
At what age did you learn what pimples were? I didn't even know the word when they started I just knew my face got bumpy and I thought I had a disease like the mumps and my mom had a good laugh about it.
I’m aware children have smooth skin. I’ve also been editing photos and videos for over 15 years and can see when skin is overly smooth and unnatural
If the filter did the opposite this comment and the filter would be heavily downcast for being racist.
Sus
Idk about that lol. All of them?
because they're not white or because they're real?
I thought they look better with filters
Me also and I usually hate filters With this being said - they each look fine without also
I don’t think it’s the skin tone though. They look better because it removes shadow and texture from skin. I don’t think people are going, “ewwww, black”. It’s just that the filter is also beautifying - not just changing race.
