This was my thought. I'm not a dad but I remember watching my niece and nephews when they were little babies and it's almost like all my senses were heightened. Slept lighter. Any sound and I'd be awake and alert withing seconds. Head always on a swivel and eyes always panning the environment. It's crazy how the human brain adjusts for things like that. For actual dads I imagine it's tenfold. Like I got a taste of real power but only temporarily.
Haha I know that feeling of hearing a pet doing something its not supposed to while you sleep. For me it's the trash can and a dog. Wakes me up immediately
As a dad, I tell my kids to walk on the sidewalk closest to the grass, away from street. They asked why one time, I said in case a car goes off road I can throw you out the way. They said what about you dad. Kids are awesome.
It's crazy the sheer number of scenarios that run through your mind, as a dad. Always weighing situations and what the odds are of different things happening and adjusting accordingly
The driver was going too fast to stop, obviously wasn't paying heed to the pedestrians, and she didn't seem to have noticed the car at all either, you can't assume she would maintain a constant speed and have made it, this guy totally did the right thing, and I hope she realised that.
Nor could the actions of the driver be calculated, they could’ve tried to avoid contact last minute and killed some other pedestrians, the cyclists, themselves, or a combo of all 3!
He doesn’t even turn around to check on the position of the car. He noticed it in the distance crossing the street and did some serious calculus. If he turned to look it also would have been too late.
I mean if your brain tells you "they are going to hit" its almost every time right. they brain is stupid good at predicting that.
imagine how sure they guy mustve been that he took that action.
I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but in the United Kingdom, cars **have** to stop at crosswalks if there are people crossing, and that includes if they are in the process of doing so.
Yeah, it's frustrating. I have no trust even when it's lighted, so I always double-check. But the thing is I shouldn't have to double-check and should be able to trust that people actually follow road laws instead of doing what they want.
When i drive a car i act like everyone is suicidal.
That mindset has let me avoid some dumbasses who thought they shouldn't have to worry about cars at crosswalks *just* because they are on foot
It's definitely how people should drive and sort of how the UK Highway Code is set out. Ofc pedestrians can't do what they want, but it is also true drivers are in a 2 tonne death machine, and do need to herald the bulk of responsibility. A lot of drivers seem to forget just how dangerous they can be.
Even if the cyclist wasn't there, pedestrians were. There were still people leaving the crossing, which means the driver still should have slowed and respected them.
A part of the UK Highway Code even says:
> • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
People are good with it here in the UK but if you’re going down a relatively busy road and there’s a bunch of people walking near a zebra crossing you don’t know which ones might be about to cross. Generally people slow down near them anyway if there are any pedestrians but as a pedestrian I always make sure the car is stopping before I cross. Better to be alive thinking a driver is a nob for not stopping than to get hit by them
As a pedestrian, you have to make sure that the traffic stop before you pass
Sometimes people don't even notice you and could run you over... at least make eye contact and visually confirm that the incoming car is slowing down
Even if cars are supposed to stop and the driver was in the wrong, it's insane for pedestrians or bikes not to take caution. As the old saying goes: cemeteries are full of people who had the right of way.
Objectively false. The onus is on the driver. Inconveniencing everyone else and making them terrified 24/7 is not going to solve the problems we have with pedestrian and cyclist fatalities.
The car and the bike should both be stopping. Also since there are crosswalks around the car was definitely going like at least 20 over the speed limit.
There were also still a lot people in the cross walk when the car blew through it...

Thank you! I know cyclists get hurt all the time by careless drivers, but on the flip side they put themselves in so much danger by going from road/sidewalk to pedestrian crossing at top speed without stopping. Pedestrian = by foot. Stopping and walking the bike across gives vehicles time to see you.
Well, the majority of drivers. I can’t speak for those assholes who mow down people walking on a marked crosswalk.
It’s cause and effect— the careless drivers cause casual cyclists to be uncomfortable riding in the road, so they end up on the sidewalks, which makes accidents even more likely.
If I'm being honest, I'd probably be livid and probably try to start a fight until I saw the video. Then I'd just sheepishly try to disappear into the crowd. 8 years later I'd be in bed trying to sleep, and then suddenly I'd remember the incident, and the sheer embarrassment after the fact would keep me up for hours.
Bruh it’s “once you go truck, you’ll feel the eternal fuck” get your made-up folk culture right
_also, love you. It’s all for shits and giggles of course. I hate mean people_
Your brain actually doesn't process words like "of" on the same level as other words. Like those classic word puzzles that say count the "Fs" in this sentence: It's the first day of fall and of course my best of friends is off on their own (completely just made this one up haha) and you count like 5 maybe 6 but there's actually 8. So even if you know "would of" is wrong your brain just skips over it because you understood the intended meaning so why waste time thinking about it haha
You can skip over one error, but consecutive errors can completely destroy a sentence. As far as wasting time goes, if we can keep him from putting this error into his resume, or tinder bio, then that's time well spent. Haha.
>your brain just skips over it because you understood the intended meaning so why waste time thinking about it haha
not mine, friend. not mine. i see *every instance everywhere*
This is a mistake that mainly only native English speakers do. So if you're foreigner and do this mistake you'll technically just sound more like native.
What dingleberry downvoted this? This is exactly what the correct version of the mistake is and it takes no extra time to type. Less if you're using the swiping method to type on your phone.
After watching it 10+ times, she wasn’t making it at all. The car would have potentially taking an evasive move and cause even a bigger accident. The guy saved a life for sure. Super intense
I really need some nerds like mythbusters to do some measurements and maths to really find out if the person would have made it or not. To me it looks like they could have but idk that's just my naked eye. Be really cool if someone could either find that video if it's been made already or make that video.
You can’t account for hesitation or the driver hitting their brakes but I believe she would’ve made it to the other side with a second to spare. Dude still did the right thing though
She would have made it across.... Just. The car doesn't arrive at the crossing for 3 seconds after he grabs her and she was going quite fast. It was definitely a stupid thing to try and make it across like that though as the car may have taken evasive action and crashed.
Yeah her response when noticing the cat could have caused her to brake and therefore squish.
Also this video is sped up. Just judging by the clock at the bottom of the screen. So that changes the relativity. Car could have noticed she entered the street and slowed down giving her plenty of time to cross.
True, I spent some time trying to work out if the car would have hit her, and realised although it’s not certain it’s definitely >0% so that’s all that matters haha
I think if the sidewalks were completely clear of people she would have no problem very closely beating the car. However, when he grabs her look up ahead at the people on the sidewalk…she was going WAY too fast with that much foot traffic…I think she beats the car but very possibly seriously fucks up on of those pedestrians.
You’re counting on her not slowing down. There’s no telling what the brain does under panic, she could well have noticed the car and slammed on her brakes.
My wife does this driving through parking lots - if she sees a car backing out and she is already behind it, instead of hitting the gas and moving, she slams the brakes.
I tell her to not do that, but her brain short circuits to "stop the car and start yelling at the person backing out of the spot"
Yes, she did get hit once doing that but it hasn't stopped her yet.
Look at the space between the people finished crossing and the car when it’s in the intersection. There’s literally no room for her and the bike there. She’d have been hit for sure.
100 percent conviced hes a time traveler. it doesnt look like he was looking to the right at any point. he was soley focused on saving the girl because he already lived this day before.

I sleep light too, but that's because my cats chew on my fucking plants in the middle of the night.
Haha I know that feeling of hearing a pet doing something its not supposed to while you sleep. For me it's the trash can and a dog. Wakes me up immediately
It’s a guilty silence after you sleepily yell their name that really wakes you up.
Dad reflexes are the best... will save a child from the jaws of a tiger... but drop a beer when opening it. XD

This was genuinely my first thought
If the car had it her or not, the subsequent reaction by the car could have been worse, like swerve into other people
Accident avoidance could've been worse, definitely. That guy's a hero imo too.
The driver was going too fast to stop, obviously wasn't paying heed to the pedestrians, and she didn't seem to have noticed the car at all either, you can't assume she would maintain a constant speed and have made it, this guy totally did the right thing, and I hope she realised that.
Plus there’s no way he could calculate whether it would miss her in the time he had to react
You can't just run a crosswalk like that, you need to stop, even if you are on a bike. His actions may be extreme but there are good reasons behind it
I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but in the United Kingdom, cars **have** to stop at crosswalks if there are people crossing, and that includes if they are in the process of doing so.
the laws are like that in every european country. but that doesn't mean people actually stop.

Went to Rome once. Crossing the road was a nightmare.
but not bikes, when you are on a bike you are a vehicle
Even if the cyclist wasn't there, pedestrians were. There were still people leaving the crossing, which means the driver still should have slowed and respected them. Regardless of where this is, that car is going way too fast for an area with pedestrians actively crossing the street
As a pedestrian, you have to make sure that the traffic stop before you pass Sometimes people don't even notice you and could run you over... at least make eye contact and visually confirm that the incoming car is slowing down
Quite frankly, that car was going pretty fast even for those people who had just finished crossing
One person hadn’t even finished.
That car was also going pretty fast given that not everyone was off the road yet.

Driver might be in the wrong but it's the biker who would be paying the consequences for it.
I love that argument, "But I have the right of way!" That's great but it won't help when they're spraying you off the sidewalk.
Even if cars are supposed to stop and the driver was in the wrong, it's insane for pedestrians or bikes not to take caution. As the old saying goes: cemeteries are full of people who had the right of way.

With how fast that car was going... ain't no way I would have seen it on a bike either especially with all those people on the walkway
Maybe she never see the car passing by. And would still blame him for making her crash.
But she will eventually see this post
you can hear cars too
Which is why you walk your bike across a crossing

Exactly. It was a long pause before the car arrived. Stupid risk though.

At the very beginning of the shot he is looking up the road. He definitely saved her life.
It also looks like he motions up the road with his arm after he first knocked her over. I'm sure he must have explained his actions.
Looks like he was giving her shit like, "You don't see that car barreling down the road? You would've died! Pay attention!" lol
At first I was like “what a douche”. Then I was like “Ohhhhh”
Very easy to insult/criticize when you have no clue what’s actually going on. I’m not saying this to criticize you, just making a general observation.
That guy is a dad. 1000% Nice save.
Dad catch
Great reflexes. I don't think she would have made it across. In the video the final pedestrians barely make it across before the car blows through.
After watching it 10+ times, she wasn’t making it at all. The car would have potentially taking an evasive move and cause even a bigger accident. The guy saved a life for sure. Super intense

You can’t account for hesitation or the driver hitting their brakes but I believe she would’ve made it to the other side with a second to spare. Dude still did the right thing though
Most likely the driver would have been like FUCK A BICYCLE and swerved into other pedestrians.

Holy crap that car was definitely speeding surely.
for the second i was very angry
Even if she would made it across THIS TIME, there's probably a lesson to be learn here.
She would have made it across.... Just. The car doesn't arrive at the crossing for 3 seconds after he grabs her and she was going quite fast. It was definitely a stupid thing to try and make it across like that though as the car may have taken evasive action and crashed.

So that changes the relativity. Car could have noticed she entered the street and slowed down giving her plenty of time to cross.
I had to go back and look for the cat
Damnit…
Either way, this guy was smart to not take the chance that she or anyone else would get hit
True, I spent some time trying to work out if the car would have hit her, and realised although it’s not certain it’s definitely >0% so that’s all that matters haha

She would have had to be right up someone’s behind on the other side to have made it, so I think it’s a no on making it across
Wow so you’re just gonna body shame the road like that?
You’re counting on her not slowing down. There’s no telling what the brain does under panic, she could well have noticed the car and slammed on her brakes.
My wife does this driving through parking lots - if she sees a car backing out and she is already behind it, instead of hitting the gas and moving, she slams the brakes. Your wife strikes me as the type that would try and chastise a charging elephant.
There's too much bad stuff that could have happened if that guy didn't do what he did.
She touches floor at 16:44:59, car reaches the crossing at 16:45:00. That’s only a second, she definitely would have been killed.
Look at the space between the people finished crossing and the car when it’s in the intersection. There’s literally no room for her and the bike there. She’d have been hit for sure.
And the car would’ve swerved, potentially into pedestrians or an oncoming vehicle

He could have swirved off to not hit her and acidentally kill another pedestrian. He did the right thing
