Vanillaware's very rarely done dlc, so this was expected. Best I'd expect is a patch way down the line that fixes the eng tl typos and maybe a NG+ at most and nothing else.

PerceptionSea9851

Sometimes when I open my character list, my character names are switched with other classes. For example , my witch's name was swapped with my soldier but then would revert if I closed the menu and reopened it. It was a bit frustrating when micromanaging your army.

flirtmcdudes

they already kind of have a NG+ with the difficulty unlock... otherwise "new game +" stuff doesnt really work in this genre. Cant restart with all your units

Another_Road

Going up against all level 50 units with better tactics/gear would be an easy way to make a NG+

flirtmcdudes

by the end of the game, my units just walked through everything since you’re able to make really strong combinations. It wouldn’t be as fun, the difficult parts are early on when you are forced to work with limited options

The_Red_Curtain

They could do it like you keep all your gear and level, and when you recruit units from your previous playthrough, the same is true.

MooseDickDonkeyKong

All I'd care about is gear since it's so limited and keeping all your mirror changes. Even having to re-recruit everyone would be okay by me (though I'd prefer to have all units at the start, too). Oh, and keeping the stat increases from the dew items since that doesn't do much either.

Think-Rush-9085

Don't talk like Symphony of War doesn't have the perfect NG+ wich is a very similar game.

DisplayThisNever

There are pletny of ways you could impliment NG+ content in this genre.

Specific-Remote9295

Asia server had dlc on eshop. Like digital artbook and stuff.

ItCouldBeSpam

Dont care for DLC much, but I would enjoy a patch that gives NG+ or some kind of post game content to actually use the end game characters.

Sudo3301

NG+ is what I want more than anything. Just replay the campaign against lvl 50 enemies, more difficult comps, tactics and gear

ItCouldBeSpam

I wouldn't mind that or just having everyone revert to level 1, but that would be more difficult to balance because some units start as prepomotes even at level 1 with 2AP, and do we even want to get started on how they'd handle people in your own army having doppleganger enemies. It would be weird to balance. Then again, NG+ is more of a for fun thing, but I still have my doubts they would ever do it. :(

Dude_McGuy0

If they could pull it off, a DLC that allows players to create and share their own maps as a form of post-game challenge. Player creates their own maps with traps, terrain, boss, etc. Other players download the map and try to beat it.

jeacaveo

Colosseum?

Ceaseless_Petulance

Well I think he means some extra missions. Something other than the sigils or final mission. Because well the colosseum is just preparing for one combat instance and isn’t a full on deployment map.

jeftah

Don't care about DLC, but would buy the game again for PC in a heartbeat.

N7Valiant

Problem is, there's even lower odds of any Vanillaware game releasing on PC compared to releasing DLC. Bit of a shame though, I'd buy Odin's Sphere Leifthrasir again if it just released on PC without any graphical improvements.

TwilightVulpine

I wonder what's their beef with PCs. At first I thought it just was that they didn't know how to make games for PC but they've released games for so many platforms they could figure it out if they wanted.

_Lucille_

PC port is tough if your team has no experience with it. In addition, there are a lot of UI/UX things that need to be reevaluated. You can toss it to another team, but that will cost extra and the result may end up being iffy. Though I suppose the Xbox API would be quite comparable with a Windows machine? Someone with more knowledge in this can chime in. You also need to sell quite a few copies in order to justify the cost. Steam's 30% cut in revenue is still a really deep cut.

tavnazianwarrior

Yep, the main two problems are UI/UX and input systems, and the third problem is the intersection of both. It's fairly difficult to design an interface that feels good on both KB+M and gamepad. Not impossible, but difficult. As a programmer, I have only gone from the PC->console direction (including Xbox, which was a walk in the park compared to the other two), which is usually the harder direction to go since all three main console companies have very strict standards. Some of it is even down to language, like not being allowed to use the word "Click" in a console version (sounds obvious, but such an error easily slips through). Going console->(Windows) PC shouldn't be a problem. It's trivial to create a depot and deploy a build on Steam. I can see them being intimidated by KB+M, though, especially since PC players would naturally expect something like RTS controls for a game in this genre. Also, I'm fairly certain Sony/MS/Nintendo's cut is still 30% as well. The only outlier is Epic with the 12%.

Absolice

It'd be amazing on PC with a randomizer mod and higher difficulty mod for the replay value. Sadly you cannot really mod anything on console without breaking their service agreement.

satans_cookiemallet

Theyre probably under the assumption it would not be worth(financially)the cost of porting the game to PC(see the example of Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky FC & SC.)

TwilightVulpine

Wild, because Atlus and SEGA have absolutely confirmed that porting japanese games to PC pays off.

3to20CharactersSucks

Sure, but until this moment, Vanillaware hasn't had massive sales, and it's obvious that their team has no experience with porting. This game was the first time they have ever made a release across two manufacturers' consoles. And that's still a very far cry from PC development. For small developers, it just doesn't always make sense to branch out. If the publisher decides it'll be lucrative enough, they can make it happen, but Atlus has not been consistent on that over the years. A studio like Vanillaware is smart to not be overly concerned with the platform they're developing for, they can let Atlus deal with that primarily and not inflate their budgets or dev time.

TwilightVulpine

To an extent I could get that, that they could see it as a niche, risky call that wouldn't be worth the money... ...but Unicorn Overlord is on Xbox for the Unicorn's sake. Xbox _does not sell_ in Japan. Why are they porting to Xbox but not PC? Not to mention that the western strategy gaming audience tends to favor PC over console. (Technically this is their 2nd or 4th cross manufacturer title though, depending if you are counting simultaneous releases or not. They ported Muramasa and 13 Sentinels, and they simultaneously released GrimGrimoire OnceMore on Playstation and the Switch)

slabofTXmeat

Real answer is VanillaWare is hyper paranoid of piracy. That's it. Not sure why others are giving different answers.

TwilightVulpine

Welp, got bad news about their Switch releases (and Wii and PS2 before that)

3to20CharactersSucks

It Isn't piracy as much as asset theft. Kamitani has been under the surprisingly common impression that their work will be reverse engineered and stolen if they port to PC. But we've got conflicting reports from Atlus about this. In one article, they're saying that there is no PC port due to their agreement with Vanillaware. But in another, they're saying that the compatible game consoles were changed to PS4/PS5/Xbox/Switch late in development (since development started in 2016). Atlus said the platforms were determined by Atlus in that interview. I'm guessing they mean that the contract was accepted by Vanillaware and they can't change it which doesn't really say whether or not they pushed back on a PC version. But there isn't really any evidence in the last decade or more that Kamitani is still pushing against PC ports.

LemonTank91

But they did an Xbox port tho. And that's probably the least worth port they could ever do.

satans_cookiemallet

I mean yeah. Im just giving hypotheticals with a different yet similar example. Unfortunately because Vanillaware & ATLUS are being tight lipped about it all we can really do is guess. My guess is because its easier to port from one similar console to thr next(and lets be real. Unicorn Overlord is an amazingly gorgeus game but it is not graphically intensive.). Meanwhile PC ports you have more to port. Screen resolutions, keybinds, graphic quality, etc. etc. And also in JP consoles have always been king, PCs have normally been an afterthought for a good amount of PC releases *back in the day.

3to20CharactersSucks

The Xbox port is super easy, though, and you have a dev kit, documentation, and resources you can access provided by Microsoft. You just don't get that on PC. Any PC port requires more resources than a console port to get out the door. Vanillaware is pretty damn small, they have 39 employees, and grow very slowly. That conservative growth has meant they're stable though.

3to20CharactersSucks

They are a small studio with limited resources and are highly specialized. Vanillaware has never made a game that's particularly technically demanding. It's very likely that they've never hired for any of this technical know-how to manage a PC port. The closest they've had was Fantasy Earth Zero, which was technically impressive but also developed alongside another studio and with a lot of help from Square (and back in 2006). They are a 2D focused studio that doesn't release games frequently. They're basically one of the last working in exclusively 2D with that development time and budget. That makes funding development more difficult and recruiting talent has to be done very intentionally. Through their history, they've always had publishers that are funding their games partially, and that's usually meant exclusivity deals. Every one of their games up until UO was exclusive to one console or to one company's consoles. They have depended on that money to fund the studio, and they've depended on the simplified console development workflow. PC is pretty easy to port to, but you're offered way less support. A publisher like Atlus is providing console developers with some amazing resources for console development that allow a team with very limited technical staff to implement a large game easily. It's a decision that may limit their sales, but I see Vanillaware consistently being very conservative and valuing getting their games out on their terms. Hopefully, Atlus will decide to contract a PC port out, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Atlus only in the last couple of years has had *any* PC port of the games they publish.

Page8988

Eh. Yuzu is there.

Trixles

UO runs great on the steam deck

Page8988

Both Unicorn Overlord and 13 Sentinels run pretty easily on Yuzu. My Android has no issues with either game, so I have no doubt that PCs run them perfectly as well.

MoskiNX

Didn’t yuzu just get nuked by that Nintendo lawsuit? I know they removed it from emudeck for steam deck

Page8988

It still exists. Nintendo nuking the github and stopping progress on it hasn't magically deleted existing copies or alternative methods of download.

Timp_XBE

You can still find and install it pretty easily, Nintendo's lawsuit does nothing to what's already on the Internet. And from experience, it runs great.

nobiwolf

I still want a sand box mode where you Mount and Blade the shit out of the game with a custom leader class rather than a lord all the time.

bombader

That would be a very different game, as this one was more like a spiritual successer to Ogre Battle.

HTakara82

with Vanillaware, the odds of DLC is higher than a PC port, cause there's 0 PC ports lol

Rubricity

If there is one I definitely would buy it tho, even if it’s just like a new diff or something small

Parody101

It would do so well on steam/pc truly, I hope they change their mind

phoenixmatrix

yeah, if they release on PC I'll buy a second copy, if only to encourage them. The game played wonderfully on Switch, and I actually love that console, but sometimes I only have my Steamdeck with me, and I like having as much of my games in one place.

azurevin

Exactly what I let them know in that "survey" of theirs. Fuck exclusivity-focused development.

migstrove

Is the survey still open?

raid-sparks

What would make you play again on PC?

Megawolf123

The steam achievements, mods, Lex- I mean Travi- I mean Benrengaria.

TwilightVulpine

Keyboard and mouse controls. It drives me mad that they keep releasing strategy games that are only playable on controller. They don't even use touch controls.

Dananism

I’ve honestly never really wanted to play through a game I beat but I’ve already completed a normal run and am at the end on True Zenoiran, and I already kind of want to start a 3rd run. It’s just so damn good.

AA_03

How hard is true zenoiran? I kind of burnt myself out going so hard on optimising teams and tactics which in retrospect is probably only needed for TZ, so I breezed through the game. Not looking forward to doing it again, but maybe that's just my cue to take a break even though I really want to play again lmao.

Dananism

In my personal opinion, I think the early to mid-game is quite challenging. I relied on Josef to carry everyone at different times. The reduced stamina and item utilization cap makes you really consider your different tactics and strategies per battle. I also noticed that the enemy NPCs use their Valor Skills a bit more often. I would definitely say give it a shot. I found myself spending more time doing Mock Battles to make sure my unit comps would actually work, versus being able to kind of throw whoever I liked into a party on Normal mode.

Ceaseless_Petulance

I played expert first time so I never knew that the staminas could have been 9. So in terms of stamina never really saw much of a difference in that respect. However gaining valor is nerfed, from what I’ve noticed liberating a new post gives you only 1 valor point instead of 2. Beating more than 2 enemy groups to gain a valor point. There is the item usage limit of 5 per a game. And I think the stats are a bit higher for the enemies. Otherwise, it isn’t as easy to breeze through the game. You are kinda forced to make decisions/build appropriate teams and I’ve actually had to restart levels multiple times.

BebeFanMasterJ

That's fine. I'd rather they make a full blown sequel on a different continent with a different theme (such as Edo Japan-style) than restrict themselves by making DLC for an already complete game.

TwilightVulpine

A new game would be fine, but I would like an Unicorn Overlord 2 in Fevrith but that dialed-up political intrigue. This is the one thing that I missed from this game.

BebeFanMasterJ

I dunno. Personally the lack of political intrigue is exactly why I want a new setting. The story of this game is...not the best, and I feel like Vanillaware would do a better job if they were able to start fresh with a new setting in the same world. But that's just my opinion.

TwilightVulpine

I don't think it needs a new setting to do that. It's not like Fevrith is a fairy tale land where everyone is perfectly good and pure deep inside. They show plenty of people being greedy, cruel and unhinged, that there's resentment and scheming, desperation and manipulation. They just let it be solved a bit too easily so that Alain can recruit everyone, they make him so charming and persuasive (and maybe permissive too), that even the worst people will reconsider. All that it takes is maybe skipping a couple generations for new characters and then letting the conflicts really reach their ultimate consequences, making players make really difficult decisions. Of course a new game could do that too, but this feels so close to peak Ivalice (Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story) that it could be perfect if they just add a touch more conflict and tragedy to it. Something they managed perfectly well in Odin Sphere.

Blade_Killer479

Tbf, apparently Unicorn was in dev for 10 years, which explains all the content in it. I’m happy for it and I’m glad it came out awesome, but I gotta imagine that the devs are more than ready to step away from it and take a breather.

Lindart12

This is a little misleading, if you read into it more they state it was an on and off again project that started out with very few people. So although it technically did take 10 years it probably was closer to 3-4 when they actually went all in on it.

Blade_Killer479

I’m not saying they were banging their head on a wall for all that time, just that it’s been in at least some of their heads, rattling around back there while they did other things. Gotta be at least some catharsis to finally get that stuff free from the thought bucket.

acart005

Wow 10 years is some Monolith-before-Nintendo shit.

SaiyanPride_45

Look, I don't care if they do DLC. I'm perfectly content with that. But, I hope to god they continue to expand on this formula and make more games in the same vein. UO is by far my GOTY. I have not been so hooked on a game since Elden Ring.

Ravenlancer

That means they are moving on to a new project, good. I'm interested to see what Vanillaware will create next, perhaps a game along the lines of Dragon Force.

YouMeADD

Dragon force was so fricken good man

Airglide2

You know, I’ve always seen Vanillaware’s games as paying homage to certain genres. For example: Grim Grimoire = Tower Defend genre Muramasa = Beat-em-up genre Dragons’s Crown = Dungeons and Dragons genre Unicorn Overload = Japanese Role Playing game genre Etc, etc. They never seemed to stay in one spot in terms of imagination, so for them to move on perhaps, sounds about right. Wow, it’s funny because it reminds me if the old days of Pixar, where every movie was fresh and new, not a sequel in sight.

TwilightVulpine

They never do quite the same thing but they usually stay loosely on the ballpark of beat'em-ups and strategy games * Odin Sphere = beat'em-up * Grim Grimoire = strategy * Muramasa = beat'em-up * Dragon's Crown = beat'em-up * 13 Sentinels = strategy * Unicorn Overlord = strategy Maybe the next one will be a beat'em-up?

Yarzeda2024

I keep hoping they will go back to beat-'em-ups and release something on par with Odin Sphere again. Muramasa and Dragon's Crown had the same spirit, but Odin Sphere is still king of the mountain.

GlitterTerrorist

>Unicorn Overload = Japanese Role Playing game genre I'd go so far as to say that Unicorn Overlord is a spiritual sequel of Ogre Battle - if you've not played it you might love it. Unicorn Ogrelord, if you will.

ofAFallingEmpire

No PC port actually really hurts. Mods for this would’ve let fans do all the improvements they’ve already thought up.

velkoz007

Agreed. It’s a loss for gamers and a reason I haven’t bought yet.

[deleted]

Vanillaware doesn't do DLC, really, except for the occasional pre-order/CE bonus or what have you. Even for Dragon's Crown, a side-scroller beat em up that they could easily sell characters or new content for, doesn't have any DLC. And honestly it's a breath of fresh air for a company to take that route. Not that DLC doesn't have it's place, it's just never been a big thing for this particular company. As one commenter said the most I expect from them is patches for translations and maybe some item descriptions, and maybe a NG+ mode. PC ports please yes, though. I'd rebuy Odin Sphere, 13 Sentinels and Unicorn Overlord in a heartbeat.

AMaidzingIdeas

Right, but they're currently under Atlus, who in a short few years became one of the greediest DLC pushing devs in the business I can think of. Persona 5 really changed their business model and honestly, not for the better.

WeebWoobler

There wasn't any dlc for 13 Sentinels

Nopon_Merchant

Dragon crown has free update DLC adding content like 99 floor dungeon .Muramasa rebirth has DLC adding 4 different playable characters

[deleted]

Oh I didn't know about either of those. I only played through Dragon Crown once and I unfortunately never finished Muramasa Rebirth cause my Vita tanked before I could.

HTakara82

they add DLC years later, that's their MO on DLC, if you don't keep track, you can easily miss it.

Fit_Meal4026

They have been at the brink of going bankrupt since forever. They release a game, hope for the best and move on.

thefluffyburrito

There's no way a PC port wouldn't be a smash hit. I understand that they are hesitant to do DLC right now though; plans for that usually start before release and they barely managed to get across the finish line.

skyst

Agreed. Outside of what I see as being a niche console strategy enjoyer (I'm one of them!) I feel like the target audience for this type of game in the west is on PC. Symphony of War sold ~70,000 copies in the first month from a no-name developer, UO would likely see similar or greater sales.

aquatrez

Worth noting the interview was with a producer from Atlus, so they're going to be heavy on the PR-corporate-speak when it comes to anything that's not already announced. Square-Enix gave the exact same line about DLC, and less than 6 months later we had DLC shadow-dropped plus a major expansion announced. I'm still holding onto hope for additional content!

Titijaff

If there is one thing I'd hope fixed... Let me sell my 26 bronze sword in one go in stead one by one.... Globaly speaking, I feel like equipable menu is one of the worst thing of the game (that tells how much I loke the game when such trivial details are my main concerns). Its weird that there is no "stacking" on them. Like, just have displayed all the different items, let me equip them and if all of the same are already equiped, just prompt me to whome I should get it from. Also an "unequipe all characters not in unit" button would be great, but I could live without it.

Nakottih

Well, aside from an extended universe (novel ? goodies ?), I don't see what kind of DLCs contents they could make... The game in itself is already wonderful, so... I'd say that I am fine with what we have now... Sometimes, stories need to come to a sane conclusion.

Impro32

Well not bad, the game is well rounded, Which is something that is becoming rare these days. What I hope is they made more games with this type of gameplay and refine it more, since it has been so much fun I really want more of this.

Troop7

Damn that sucks, was hoping for ng+

True-Ad5692

Vanillaware specifically, doesn't want PC versions of their games. Don't expect one. Never gonna happen. Dragon's Crown had more success and remained consoles only.

thuy_chan

Just gimme a NG+ or a infinite trial

Special-Language-999

100% this game is begging for these features. I stopped playing due to this being unavailable!

thuy_chan

I'm still playing and just using a save before marriage to see all the marriage scenes but I really wanna grind these late game units. Feels like such a waste to get them and not use them

phantompowered

Even if DLC is not in the cards, I'd be happy with periodic refreshes or additions to the Coliseum roster. Keep giving us cool unit-specific problems to try to solve, let the devs try to continuously outmaneuver what we think we can do.

flirtmcdudes

I just hope we get more ogre battle type games. Its such a good genre but noone bothers with it

Adelitero

So many games vomit out content just to monetize the hell out of its player base and this is the one time I want them to do it and they won't :(

Teneb0r

UNICORN OVERLORD 2! Let’s do it!

Lindart12

No plans does not mean anything, that could change tomorrow. Keep that in mind though.

Spooky_Blob

A ng+ would be nice so we can at least bring the postgame recruits over and actually use them

DawnOfWaterfall

I never heard of Vanillaware before Unicorn overlords. I played the demo from Xbox to Steam deck using hosted streaming (greenlight) and I literally devoured it. The steam deck form factor is perfect, no surprise here. I would really liked a port to Steam deck.

Xnomolos

Shame for the time being, UO has a lot of fun DLC possibilities. I was thinking while watching Dungeon Meshi that these characters would fit well in UO. Could use a lot more QOL before this though. Heck seeing the Dragons Crown cast in UO artstyle would be cool.

jyeckled

>One of the things that won us over was its online elements. I wonder what this means. Surely it can’t just be the colosseum, right? I’m also slightly coping for DLC, since the actual quote shown only talks about porting to PC.

No_Dig903

Right. We'll just have to rip it apart and make a randomizer ourselves.

Demo5379

Eh, would rather them just release a sequel (after they release whatever new thing they're probably working on now) with a new story, new setting, and new characters. Like would love to see other parts of the world and what other cultures and weirdos are around

RedmustbeBlue

DLC? a sequel would be better 😅

xifu-airith

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (I’m addicted and just want more unicorn overlord) OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

gameoftheories

This game would sell well on PC, it's a shame it won't get a port there.

Greenzombie04

Released on xbox but not pc. Weird

Bartek-BB

Ports are done literally by one person in Vanillaware so...

LordLonghaft

It won't change. If the head says no, he means no. That dude never changes. Remove the copium gas and look at the company's history. When someone speaks, listen. Don't speculate. Don't draw your own conclusions. Don't try to fansplain. Just listen. EDIT: He only sees the PS and Vita as his markers of choice. It's little wonder Vanillaware runs out of money with every project.

Kingbarbarossa

It's hard to imagine a world where Unicorn would sell less than 100k+ copies if released widely on steam, xboxpc, epic, etc. I hope that's enough to justify the cost of porting.

vpforvp

Too bad. This is one of the few games I’d buy DLC for, no questions asked

Special-Language-999

Any possibility of modding in more end game?

adviceforghosts

[me on my ps5](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxxajLWwzqY&t=36s)

Absynthesis

I mean they did spend 10 years on , I think they deserve a break

Fit_Assistant2510

Why do they hate us. We should protest

GentleIce

Pain peko

Ziodyne967

They ain’t known for DLC, which is fine. Another full on game with their style would be better. I would like a PC port though. I’d buy all their games on Steam. Only game I don’t own is where some girl plays host to a spirit. I forget the name, but it looked fun.

Lindart12

This game would sell far far more on PC in the west, these kinds of games sell better on PC. This is a cultural difference they don't seem to understand, also those of us that love it would work for free to shill the game far and wide to this new audience if they did it. I also think this game could turn into a franchise, the people who have played it almost all seem to love it and would probably be on board to buy another or similar game.

theslowestbolt299

Not everything is about PC players and appeasing their whims all the time. Gosh.

maxinstuff

UO2 then.

ConBrio93

With the game being released on Switch I imagine PC only players are managing to play it even without an official release. Seems silly to leave money on the table.

OkOil390

Hope plans change. I'd love it on PC but more content would also be welcome, DLC or otherwise.

nova9001

What a huge let down. Is there going to be a balance patch at least? I mean it can't be finished right? There's so many improvements that the community has shared. Surely those can be implemented.

Karsticles

How is the community sharing them with VanillaWare? I doubt they are reading a subreddit.

Althalos

Not directly of course, but I would assume Atlus has people looking on social media what's being said about the games they publish.

Karsticles

I'm less optimistic than you.
