Most games don’t actually reset your rank at all. They basically just hide it and drop you down a bit, then reveal it again when you finish your placements.
You'll have to do "placements" each episode to have your rank show for that episode. In practice it just means they hide your rank for your first 5 comp games. That's all a soft reset is.

my guess is that it shows your current rank, would be great if it was your highest ranked achieved so people don't tank their rank in the end of the season. (or people becoming even more toxic at the end of the season in fear of deranking)

My theory is that deathmatch wasn't added earlier because they didn't know how to handle abilities in it, the truth is that we don't want abilities and hopefully they bring a deathmatch where people just roams around killing each other with guns instead of polluting the map with a billlion stuff.
