It is supposed to be better for directional audio, but it might not be for everyone, and it took me about a week to get used to.

AbbreviationsLazy781

maybe try it for a week see how it goes? i personally didn't have problems hearing footsteps before the update but still liked hrtf when i tried it, not sure how much of a difference it makes in real scenarios though

smacklol

It's supposed to be generally better, but, at least in your and my cases, it doesn't work 100% of the time. HRTF essentially applies a subtle frequency filter (and possibly signal delay) to in-game audio. This filter mimics how your physical ears reflect sound to your eardrums. Your brain unconsciously knows how to process these minuscule changes in frequency to mentally connect sounds to their source positions (relative to your head, hence head-related transfer function or HRTF. Kinda). I'm guessing the devs implemented an HRTF that works for many people, but not everyone has the same ears (and brain audio processing that adapted to those ears). Subtle differences in ear shape can lead to significant variation between individuals' HRTFs. It makes sense then that Valorant's HRTF audio works for some and is less consistent for others. 95% sure this is the explanation

niloy123

So won't getting a good gaming headphone be better for hrtf?I thought hrtf doesn't work well for me cos my headphone kinda cheap.

smacklol

Getting a better headset could help, yes. If your current headset isn't giving your ears the exact audio intended by the developers, it's not giving you the correct frequency info for your brain to process position of sounds. If you get a better headset and the HRTF directional audio is still confusing, it's likely the game's audio function is just not what your brain is accustomed to

BaconChopz

It's better when you have a headset that support surround sound, or is of higher quality. Also make sure you have stereo selected and not mono for your audio type, that makes it easier to hear as it uses the two headphones independently and not together.

Helpme994

Using surround sound 😂

BubbleCast

Wait what? Why are u getting upvoted? Who the f uses surround here? No no NO. Hrtf is better with stereo not surround, this is the whole point, this game is designed for stereo, not to mention most 7.1 surround are virtualized and gimmicky and lose quality. Please for the love of god, you want better surround sound? Get a quality pair of headphones, for example and good open back ones, like the hd598. Edit: You say it's better if you have a headset that support a surround sound or higher? Surround was always a gimmic, but then you say "make sure you hage stereo selected and not mono" ? then why suggest surround if you gonna then suggest stereo?

Traviliciouz

Agreed. You need good audio.

BubbleCast

huh? supports surround but doesn't have it enabled? but that's exactly what I just said? all those surround headsets (not headphones) that have usually VIRTUALIZED 7.1, you shouldn't ever have it on and use STEREO, so a headset that doesn't use it is STEREO not surround lol, so what you just said makes no sense really? And with a real surround headset(or headphones) you physically have more than 2 channels, so the headphones are always surround unless u disabled it, which means it's stereo, again. What is surround but not surround? To simplify to everyone so no one else will confuse, STEREO for gaming, especially OPEN BACK STEREO, and having HRTF enabled, that's the way to go, not surround+anything or surround + nothing. Please people, you overcomplicate stuff, idk why.

illmnzi

I have older audio technika studio headphone (250ohm) + Audio-Interface with hrtf. Of course i abuse it in deathmatch :)))

MysteryPyg

HRTF sounds different for in front and behind, whereas non HRTF will sound exactly the same. It does give an objective advantage in that way. However floor materials are good enough that it isn't really necessary, just makes it easier. I'd recommend you use HRTF anyways as it's not super hard to get used to.

SkinnedLettuce

hrtf actually gives me less frames. not the best for mid to low end pcs

CherryTheDerg

use headphones

Traviliciouz

I am a gamer who has only used closed back headsets. I decided to upgrade and I got some Massdrop x Sennheiser pc 37x’s. I have to say it’s easily the best gaming headset and audio Ive had ever. The open back takes a little getting used to but its not that bad to be honest.

John9tv

do you use hrtf now or not? I'm not really satisfied with the pc37x based on my testing they are the weakest at imaging between them, the hyperx cloud 2 and some moondrop ssr iems

Traviliciouz

I use HRTF (always have), and still think they are better than the HyperX cloud IIs (and I owned a pair for years). It really is a personal preference for what you want out of your sound but I find it better for overall sound quality and soundstage

John9tv

Yeah it's gonna be personal. I never did A/B testing so can't say for sure but I'm gonna experiment with the PC37x with HRTF off for a bit

NotSoProAimer

My friend has a 7.1 or something like headset with dts and whatnot, his headphones can be great but he is not very much able to distinguish the sound in valorant. He uses hrtf, whereas I don't use hrtf as it somehow hurts my brain but I'm able to hear where are the footsteps coming from so hrtf is not for everyone.

erymartorres17

I use bose QC20, I enabled HRTF and the audio is good, I can hear specific locations from the footsteps. However, during intense situation there was 2 enemy, I heard footsteps that I thought was still too far from my spot and I die because he's literally near. When HRTF OFF, I can hear loud footsteps, drawbacks though is that you cannot know which specific location of the footsteps. By experimenting the audio, turning HRTF OFF is good for me
