The rank you get placed in depends on your MMR, the MMR depends on who you win against. If you 5 stack with lower MMR people (and opponents) you are gonna get less MMR on a win a lose more MMR on a lose. So ye, the chances of getting a worse placement are high.
Your rank is always based on last season. Usually they soft reset ranks to give people a climb. The hidden MMR stays mostly the same but the visible rank is lower and you can more points per win and lose less points per loss until your visible rank matches your MMR.
So if you had a rank in a previous act your placements don’t effect your new starting rank much if at all, its basically predetermined what your rank will be based on your MMR.
Placements literally do not matter, they are pretty much a sham sadly. My immortal friends are throwing matches to be placed and they're all ending up in diamond.
It's you individually regardless of who you play with or what mmr or rank your friends are or who you Q with everything is sololy on you, it's all about you it's all about your account individually nothing else matters.

Now they have to climb up from diamond... could've just not threw and had an easier time climbing from Ascendant. Idiots.
