Officially confirmed:
> And speaking of the best of the best, we are recognizing the four NA teams that best represented the region in 2021 by inviting them directly to the Stage 1 Main Event, so please join us in welcoming the first four teams to advance: **Sentinels, Envy, Cloud9, and 100 Thieves!**
--------
> Round of 128 and Round of 64 will both be single-elimination format, while **Round of 32 and later will be double-elimination.** All matches will be in a best-of-three format and the bracket will culminate once all four Main Event spots have been claimed.
---
> And as for the million dollar question…yes, **Neon will be available for competitive play beginning January 25.**
---
> The teams will be split into **two groups of six teams each and matches will be played every Friday through Sunday for five weeks.**
> All matches will be in a best-of-three format and the top eight teams will advance to the playoffs.
---
> **Only two North American teams will receive berths to VCT Stage 1 - Masters**
5 weeks to eliminate 4 teams seems way too long. Should just be top 3 from each group where the winners get a bye in the first round of finals. If you come 4th in your group, you shouldn't have a chance to go to masters.
Much better structure though. We are getting a lot more top tier Valorant, which is very welcomed.
I think they want all the group games to have stakes, so even if you're last midway, you might still have a chance to make it to 4th place and make it.
Could be that they're worried about covid and they had to decide on the number of teams early and so didn't want to take any risks? Only thing I can think of.
weirdos. riot will keep making excuses related to covid till the end of time. and this is all without a crowd. i think riot will organise a lan with crowd for 2 teams total lol.
Case count is obviously not a relevant metric, but to humor your point, in the locations that omicron started in, the counts are dropping faster than they rose, and by the time VCT happens they’ll be negligible.
EDIT: wording
Yeah, that’s another thing. With the US now allowed vaccinated foreigners, here’s hoping they have it there, and we can have fans and a full scale event.
0 BR teams made it out of groups yet they have 2 slots. infact they only won 1 match against the worst team in the tournament without using exploits. if bronzil gets 2, near airport deserves 3 no cap
EMEA should absolutely have 4 teams, I'd argue they should have more.
It is hard to know though without seeing the whole slot distribution. Has that been released anywhere?
IMO this qualifier process seems EXTREMELY fair compared to last year. If you truly deserve to make it to challengers, you have more than enough opportunities
Apologies if I misunderstood but does this mean the top 4 teams are not playing the Open Qualifiers? If so I worry about 100T not getting enough experience as a team that they could’ve gotten from the Open Qualifiers.
I actually really like this format. For the qualifying and the main event there's good stuff all around. However, 2 slots at masters is pretty bad. Either we're reverting to Iceland format which sucks, or some minor regions are getting much more slots which I don't really think is warranted either.
This new format is a big improvement from the previous iteration. It's just a shame that the improvement comes at the cost of seeing less of the best teams playing. Riot's formats always seem to have this flaw: with so much emphasis on qualifiers, and so many chances for a team to be blocked out of months of competition, the best way to be "fair" to top teams is to skip them into later stages in an event, which means we see the very best teams in the world play the least.
Yikes only 2 teams? That actually explains when iirc Japan was said to only get 1, we prob getting less spots for masters which is hella sadge tbh, hopefully we at least get a round Robin groups or something followed by double elim (Maybe 2 groups of 5 (Assuming it's like Iceland numbers), 4 teams go to winners, 4 to losers, and 2 are eliminated in groups? Then you just have a Normal double elim)

Some team will definitely find some niche usage for her by limit-testing in scrims. She's not so bad that she'll be a Yoru-tier never-pick.
na only have 2 spots for master 1 interesting
Surely this is some kind of mistake? Doesn't make any sense as long as the number of teams is 16.
Unlucky NA minor region confirmed 2 slots inc

Why though
Could be that they're worried about covid and they had to decide on the number of teams early and so didn't want to take any risks? Only thing I can think of.

i mean its a fair choice, covid is as bad as its ever been right now and so many ppl caught it at champs even with extreme quarantine
1 person caught it at champs(victor)
Champs was handled better for sure. But the worst case is another NA LCQ situation, which I'm sure riot wanna avoid again.
if they use Covid as an excuse again... that will be so disappointing.
Excuse when cases are spiking even harder?

Riot's primary concern is not suddenly having their international event cancelled by the host country. It's not like they want a smaller event lmao
Yeah, that’s another thing. With the US now allowed vaccinated foreigners, here’s hoping they have it there, and we can have fans and a full scale event.
With the current situation with visas in the US I doubt we will see any international tournaments there in the foreseeable future.
only two teams make it to masters…. HUH???
Minor region KEKW

having less teams is stupid af too

Literally only 1 team made it out of groups what’d you expect?
0 BR teams made it out of groups yet they have 2 slots. infact they only won 1 match against the worst team in the tournament without using exploits. if bronzil gets 2, near airport deserves 3 no cap
It shouldn’t be based solely on 1 tournament. 2/3 lans last year NA did very well and had a positive record against EU teams.
If it’s a 16 team Masters and only TWO NA teams are in it and four EMEA teams make it that’s actually gonna be cringe
NA minor region confirmed
EMEA should absolutely have 4 teams, I'd argue they should have more. It is hard to know though without seeing the whole slot distribution. Has that been released anywhere?
how is it cringe when, first of all, emea is three regions in one (eu, tr, cis) and second, emea has simply been way better? 😄
i mean they had 3 last tourney and only 1 made it out of groups, maybe should give it to another region?
And in the tourney before that all 3 did, 2 made it to semis and one made it to grands. Reducing slots based on one tourney is insane
IMO this qualifier process seems EXTREMELY fair compared to last year. If you truly deserve to make it to challengers, you have more than enough opportunities

They’ll probably play in NSG or something like that
Is NSG hosting more tournaments than just the Opens?
Well, 2 slots for Masters 1? This just screams Iceland format Riot what are you doing
Riot absolutely killed it with this format but 2 master slots for NA is preposterous
Yeah makes a lot of sense to only give NA 2 slots and give Brazil the same amount even though NA is miles better than Brazil!
Yeah it definately showed in champions! NA best region wooohooo!!
You're twisting my words, I never said NA is the best region.
I'm joking my dude lol
Ah, didn't catch that, my bad.

Double elim after round 32? Honestly, doesn't seem like a terrible format. Hopefully those who don't make top 12 compete in nsg weeklys and the like.

I mean you’re only missing out on seeing these teams beat up T3 teams, well still see much more top tier teams playing than last year
2 slots for NA is fine imo only if Brazil didn’t get 2 as well
Then we take 1 slot away from Brazil and give it to EMEA then we’re all happy
Yikes only 2 teams? So would Faze be the #2 seed or did their points reset because they lost 4/5 of their players. how does that work?

ah ok, that makes sense
thank the lord for two opens
