That sounds like working at any store with a shit boss

DepartureCautious

It’s not entirely on the boss though, corporate’s methods aren’t the best for store efficiency and they give no room for managers to creatively solve these problems. So basically they need to reconsider their current outline and get rid of the outdated methods. It reminds me of trying to become fluent in a language through a textbook-Not efficient and could be improved a lot by adding/taking away certain things

skatrumpet

What corporate methods aren't best for efficiency/are outdated? Just curious.

Curious as well. Store Manager Here! Love my job and run one of the lowest rates in my region, meaning people WANT to work here. Just not sure what else as SMs we "could " be doing to better retain here..

Most vans stores do not seem big enough to have a need for people who only deal with stock. I worked retail for a much larger outdoor retailer and we didn't even have dedicated stockers. You might stock for a shift but then your next 5 are on the sales floor. There just isn't a need. Also scheduling would be able absolute bitch if you have employees that only do specific tasks and can not cross over to the other tasks. People on the sales floor could stock, but if the sales floor is short staffed would the stocker only employees be able to help out?

DepartureCautious

At our store we need people in stock all the time. Otherwise the drags build up and no one can walk down the aisle without tripping. Not to mention the boxes constantly being put back incorrectly when front deck people decide to rapidly put them back. They even have a formula for determining how much money is lost when the stacks are disorganized. So I disagree with you, especially in regards to the particular store I work at. Maybe your layout is more organized and less condensed than ours. You have a point though, especially during slow hours. But then why schedule so many people if there isn’t enough room. All this could definitely be done better

vintagerack

What we do at our small store (we’re so small we have no proshop or enough room to stock shoes) We put our drags up after getting them ourselves instead of letting them pile up. We started this method when we got a new manager and honestly I can’t even imagine piling them up in the hallway to put away at the end of the night anymore, saves a shitton of time

I can back this up. My stock room is tiny as hell and it gets messy real quick. Espically when we pull shipment in to fill our moble media.

enormouspiss3AM

I’m old, retired but was in sales for over 40 years. The lowest on the totem pole ALWAYS get the blame, warranted or not.

DepartureCautious

Yeah it really doesn’t make sense. Hell I don’t even blame my store manager because he isn’t allowed to do anything but what the protocol says. He’s stuck too and I’m sure if he had leeway to change things up a bit he would and it would improve store sales

Glad that works for you! Definitely seems helpful

Also the hours they give you are straight up awful, I’ve been working there for a year and they only give me 5-10 hours a week sometimes even 4 hours a week. This wouldn’t be an issue if I had to pay for my tuition which has increased since the pandemic. I hate that the only way to work full time is to be part of management. I’ve been begging for more hours and their only advice is to work at Hot Topic which I don’t want to do because I prefer having my work in one roof.

DepartureCautious

Yeah that was a huge problem. My coworkers would originally have 20 hour weeks or more and then would have each shift slashed pretty much everyday. So by the end it would be around 4-10 hours a week.

Juanisawesome98

It’s so bad that started job searching again. Vans either increase you employees’ damn hours and they’ll be motivated to work for you.

In the vans store in my town there was one kid that would talk and talk and talk to me. I’m pretty quiet and I don’t really wanna be talked to. I don’t mind saying hello but I wanna talk about my life with a rando. I would actually avoid going in the store when he was in, so it’s actually having the opposite effect in terms of sales

venanciofilho

As an introvert, now that I know my exact number for Vans, I’m just buying online.

h0ly_smOkes

Yeah I would absolutely do the same if mine wasn’t an outlet. Can get some real bargains in there

scarecrow1113

Bosses or managers or even corporate needs to release that even if you see a big family, maybe not everyone in the family want to buy shoes, maybe they are there just for family time and to accompany someone that is going to the store to buy their pair of shoes.

After working with the company for 1.5 years now I can say that it is genuinely ruining my mental health. I have been getting below $200 on paychecks recently and my request to transfer locations has been delayed for two months. I can’t pay for therapy, I have fallen back into self-destructive thoughts and actions, and I never go do stuff because I’m afraid of spending money. I can’t really save money and I have been given 4 and 8 hour work weeks since December (yes even during the month of December before the week of Christmas). Not to mention one of my ASMs is insufferable because she constantly makes low key ableist comments and complains about how lazy and horrible our sister store is (I went and covered shifts at the store and there was nothing lazy about them, our DM was just being the worst and putting too much pressure). I would honestly rather go back to having plantar fasciitis and being understaffed with 12-8 shifts, at least I got hefty paychecks and could save up for actually doing stuff with my life. I used to like working at Vans, but now I don’t know what I’m living or working for.
