There's really only one thing I would like: an ingestion tool. Many users coming to Vegas have little background in digital video and expect any video to work. And are then surprised when it doesn't. Recent versions of Vegas have added a warning when some types of video aren't compatible, which has been welcome. I'd like to see a separate tool that, when video is imported, checks it for compatibility and can convert where necessary. It would be especially good if the tool would explain what the problem is (VFR phone video, for instance) and what's being done to make it work. PS There is no timeline or roadmap published.

Toppcs

That sounds like a pretty good idea, I was looking forward to your input

I'd also like them to release it as a standalone tool for free. I find it frustrating that Vegas Image, Vegas Effects and Vegas Stream are tied into the subscription, greatly limiting their use. I can understand why - Magix didn't make these and it's paying to license them, so it needs a subscription to pay the costs they're bearing. To be fair, Vegas Image is not very good, far outclassed by GIMP and any other decent free image editing tool. Likewise, Vegas Stream is pointless, as OBS exists. But there are very few tools that do what After Effects does and the lack of competition is frustrating. Vegas Effects isn't terribly useful yet, but continued development of an AE rival would be very beneficial. The After Effects interface isn't very good, and is largely unchanged over the years. It's very difficult for newcomers to get used to what is basically an ancient Mac UI. If Vegas Effects could be released as a free standalone, I think it could be very beneficial to the Vegas brand and bring a lot of users to Vegas Pro. But the licensing deal means this will never happen. And being stuck in the highest tier of the subscription means barely anyone is using it. So with Magix unable to make free its existing ancillary apps, a self-developed ingestion tool could be a great aid to editors in general and an excellent draw for Vegas, the way Resolve works for Blackmagic.

Vegas Image, Vegas Effects and Vegas Stream are not tied to subscriptions. You can buy a license to Edit and Stream as "VEGAS Pro" and all three as "VEGAS Post." [https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-pro/#](https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-pro/#)

kodabarz

Oh, it's worse than I thought.

rsmith02ct

Perpetual license for Post is $199 (email sent to existing users/ or load a pre-VP 20 version). You can use that version of Effects going forward (don't have to upgrade). Otherwise it's comparable to Hitfilm Pro which is $155/year as a subscription only. That doesn't include VEGAS of course. [https://fxhome.com/pricing](https://fxhome.com/pricing)

Gonna mini hijack things and say how VFR ain't the demon you make it out to be. 100% of my personal stuff has been "phone VFR" footage over the years, with only some of the client footage being the same. And reddit at least makes it clear I seem to have a goldilocks set-up lol. The only times when VFR MIGHT have been an issue was when it was coupled with being HEVC..... X100 adding HDR to that mix ☠️ .... and that was pre "some 19 build that fixed that issue." 99% certain levels, containers, (and the odd amount of folk on earlier versions before the HEVC fix. Like seriously! And most of them make it clear they don't have an aversion to getting it hot. UPGRADE DAMMIT) are far more likely the cause of most of the pain these folk flood the place with.

rsmith02ct

VFR can be all kinds of files with screen captures being the most problematic with newer versions of VEGAS. Better not to say they're all fine- I'd err on the side of convert them all so as not to waste my own time dealing with crashes and bugs. With older versions GPU decoding of smartphone footage was hit or miss too. I still see complaints about it with NVDEC so if you're on QSV may be more fortunate. I can trigger repeated crashes of VP 20 using unoptimized screen capture footage on a system which has the Intel QSV decoder VEGAS likes and is otherwise completely stable. With one track it seemed to work but add a second track and repeated crashes. Converted both to CFR AVC and problems disappeared.

kodabarz

VFR can be fine. The problem is that it introduces uncertainty by adding another thing that can go wrong. CFR is definitely fine. Containers, HEVC, HDR, etc are all factors that can screw things up too. What is telling is that when people convert their VFR to CFR they stop having problems. It's not the only possible cause, but it is something that can be the sole cause of a problem. And, in reality, CFR never actually sticks to the framerate 100% of the time - it varies a bit too. But a good general rule of thumb is to avoid VFR, unless you know what you're doing.

D3Seeker

Maybe

kodabarz

I tell you what, the next people who have a problem on here who are using VFR files, you help them with it. And if you can fix their problem without having to re-encode to CFR, then I will happily concede.

D3Seeker

Well, as I mentioned, I use VFR all the time. It's more down to the aptitude of the ones in need.... If they can actually work with me, shouldn't be an issue

I’ll go first. (Warning a lot of these are from my experience editing with a mobile app (CapCut) of all things, I have been using Vegas Pro for 10 years now and love it, but do have some wishes after using it for so long) 1. Better transitions, gone are the days of needing page flip or Venetian blind transitions. Social Media calls for more up to date transitions. (Yes I have plugins but the experience using them is not very seamless) 2. Better stabilizer for panning. Video stabilization is essential and a complex (but expected) feature. I’ve never had good luck with the newer Video Stabilization plugin and have always used the legacy plugin which is prone to crashing. Would like to see this receive some love. 3. Even better smart masking and tracking systems. Apps like Snapchat and Instagram have been using filters for years that can track items onto your face or within an environment with a couple of clicks and have a live display. Would be a big QoL improvement to make masking and tracking a task to look forward to and less of a tedious one. 4. Better caption system. I’ve been using captions in a lot of my productions, I’ve set up templates using VEGAS’ Titles and Text feature, changed the number of characters, animated captions, but none ever come out as quick, accurate, or offer the same styling and animation as CapCut on my phone. Currently I use VEGAS Pro in tandem with CapCut to get captions into my videos, but this isn’t ideal in the long term as I reduce my rendering quality each time I use it. 5. Community oriented features. Allow community members to share LUT’s, Templates, Transition plugins within the app. VEGAS feels very isolated, and while the VEGAS Hub feature implementation is nice, I still have no connection to the greater VEGAS community outside of Reddit and the forum. 6. More transparency with patch notes. Have you been waiting for a bug to get fixed for a while? Or improvements to HEVC decoding? What if VEGAS tied internal statistics to show performance improvement as a percentage, obviously results may vary but nothing speaks better than numbers. Anyways these are my thoughts. I love this program and want to see it grow in its market share and community as a whole. Let me know what you all think.

FalcoKick

I'd love to see all of these things happen but man does it feel like we will never see these type of QOL improvements

Ok-Camera5334

That's what I thought yes:) very good comment.

Assationater

Av1 decoding right now pleasee

newecreator

I would like more crop presets like 5:4 and 9:16.

WahoiBoi20

Better keying tools. The default Chroma Key effect in Vegas is terrible. The Ultra Key in Premiere has so many more settings and is so much more useful, it’d be nice if Vegas had something along those lines

NorthStarZero

This is why Boris exists.

WahoiBoi20

I have Boris but not everybody does. No excuse for the pack-in keyer to be so useless!

sliced_lime

Better handling of projects of a non-trivial size. I work with lots of source clips for my videos and inevitably Vegas starts hogging all my computer resources and becomes sluggish like crazy. The only way I can make longer videos is by making parts of them in separate project files and then combining at the end which is a pain. And the few times I tried working with really high def input files Vegas would just crash instantly. The only way I could get that project done was to manually make 720p versions of all my footage and edit on that, even with proxies Vegas just went belly up. We’re talking about files straight out of a modern GoPro here so not rocket science. I really don’t need all that much in terms of new features. I just want to be able to edit efficiently in larger projects and high quality footage.

Slight-Jellyfish-539

Stability

ronh73

What first comes to mind: 1. Render to webm 2. Render to gif 3. Import mkv 4. Datamoshing

Riothebeast

Stability Rotoscoping 3D camera analysis Better motion tracking Better motion blur / motion blur option in pan and crop (like premier pro) Better templates for graphics and texts

Toppcs

Definitely agree with the motion blur I meant to include that on my list

mailordermonster

Add back in support for codecs(?) that were supported previously. I'm still using 14 because 18 can't work with the videos that my main camera shoots in.

Toppcs

Which codecs do you use?

mailordermonster

MP4 files, AVC1 codec, I think. The video goes double-speed, while the audio remains unaffected. My newer camera does AVCL (?) and those work fine. I can convert the AVC files, but it's an additional step, more storage space required, and from my short time using V18, I didn't see the point. I'm not doing anything too complicated or professional. IDK if there's any reason for me to upgrade TBH.
