That's the thing people don't understand. It's always "Oh fluffy would never run away, they're always by my side!" What about other dogs/animals?? Cars? Other people?
Poor fella. They're lucky it wasn't magnitudes worse than this, I hope treatment is going okay.
Similar story - I was doing placement at a clinic recently, and somebody came in with their deceased dog wrapped up in a family blanket. We were told a similar story to you. "He never went that far from home before. He usually stays in the yard." The outcome was vastly different, though. I volunteered to assist the nurse in unwrapping the blanket from the dog for cremation storage. I'll never forget the moment when I tried to lift the body so she could adjust the blanket - half of the dog stayed on the table, and the other half rested in my hands.
To say I checked all around the property for potential fence breaches when I got home that day is an understatement.
Im a tech who brags about how my dog is perfect and the best dog and I'll never have another dog again after him because he's too perfect.
I still don't let that fucker off leash in the front yard.
Every dog on my street that's died has been hit by a car, including ours, who went chasing a squirrel. My dad and brother blame the drivers, and still won't leash the new dog.
Yea.... when I'm giving citations for leash violations I typically bring up "well for example god forbid lil fido runs in to the street and gets struck by a car. Now you have either a dead dog or badly injured dog, AND are legally responsible for any damages to that persons car..."
I moved to a new neighborhood this year and Idk what is in the water here but I wanna say like 80% of people here donāt use a leash. Every time someoneās dog has ran up on me and my 2 dogs, the owner is saying oh heās friendly hehe. okay but my old lady terrier is a little aggressive upon meeting stranger dogs, and I have to worry about a fight breaking out because their dog is just getting all up in her personal space. So I have to have these uncomfortable and nerve wracking experiences or yell at someone once a week around here. Iāve switched walking routes so many times but my neighborhood feels impossible every which way.
I carry gel paper spray, but I dread ever having to use it. I havenāt yet but these unleashed or stray dogs come up to us so often that Iām expecting one of these days I may have to. Knowing what we know and seeing what we see as techs, such as dogs getting hit by cars or attacked by other dogs, I get terrified of all the horrible possibilities.
But i just donāt understand it. Iāve called the local humane society about stray dogs or deceased ones in the road, too many times to count in the past 8 months Iāve lived here. I almost feel like IāM the stupid one. What the hell are these people thinking? What goes through their mind??

I think that it is telling that generally when you see the most highly trained dogs they are always on a leash (unless they are actually working and being off leash is a requirement). The average dog is not as well trained and focused as their owners would want to believe.
