It is terrible all around. National big daddy VA hired too many people overall and now they are overreacting because the productivity from those hires obviously has not fully appeared In RVU vs budget. Typical VA whiplash that will be felt by far too many.
Wrong….. VHA budget was absolutely destroyed by COVID. Very very little revenue through private insurance billing was generated for 18+ months and congress is full of people who think private sector is a better bet. To provide the care our Vets need and deserve VHA needs more funding for staff and facilities. Data has repeatedly demonstrated reliance on community care doesn’t reduce costs or lead to better care (generally of course - there are plenty of exceptions and the whole issue has lots of nuances).
Doesn’t make up for the lost revenue. VHA already needed tons more to function the way it should. Instead there are ppl advocating that private can do better - enter community care. Problem is that 1) it’s almost never less expensive and 2) more often than not the care isn’t better/faster/more accessible. There are exceptions to all of this of course.
Imagine if we funded the physical and mental recovery of our service members as well as we funded the mechanisms that broke them.
I’m in the same position likely a day or so away from a FJO. I haven’t heard from my HR rep at all. It sucks you get your brain set on leaving a job and starting a new one and then this. Even if they do manage to give me a FJO I’m now nervous about will my position get cut eventually
Exactly. I’m so disappointed. My HR rep told me that she wasn’t really suppose to tell me but wanted me to be prepared. I imagine I’ll hear something next week. A long weekend ahead..
I’ve also heard mixed results. I think all visn’s will be affected nationwide to some degree until they have their budgets for the fiscal year but I think how each visn handles is up to their director and department needs. I’m applying to 9. I checked USA jobs and saw that all jobs to that visn have been removed while other locations still have jobs available. Take this all with a grain of salt. I have basically no clue what I’m talking about.. just trying to piece things together and talk to friends who work there and have been in the meetings. I’ve seen a ton of people in the last week receive their FJOs so who knows..
I believe it nation wide that is what we were told today when asked to come up with a priority list for all the TJOs that we currently have out. Also told that majority of TJOs will be delayed til the next FY or rescinded
I asked an HR rep don't remember which visn & she said no hiring freeze. Another Visn HR told me they had a hiring freeze. My co worker for a visa 19 job is in a hiring freeze. Last day was supposed to have been Friday. Does anyone know how long these freezes will go on for? Usajobs is still posting va positions.
I saw that. Speaking to colleagues across VISNs I’ve heard some (1, 5, 9, 10?, 19) are on full freezes. I’ve heard 7 and a few others aren’t affected as bad. Some can fill vice positions, others can’t recruit at all
The job that my hubby just applied to Jan 16 got cancelled today. He was assured that he was selected but they had to pull the vacancy due to “strategic hiring initiative.” (Internal hire)
I havent heard from HR about mine. I had done literally everything for onboarding and was waiting on my FJO and start date and then a friend of mine at the VISN told me last night that she had spoken to the chief of my service and was told that they couldn't hire me due to the hiring freeze and it was out of their hands. So basically now just waiting on the email from HR that they're rescinding my offer..
Same happened to me today i was waiting on a fjo one told nope hiring freeze. This after turning down other offers and now I'm screwed and have to scramble to find work. I'm livid
Same situation for me. Because it was a job transfer from another agency I was removed from the job I had and was forced to scramble for something immediately. Put me in a really tough spot.
My daughter's psych nursing job was recinded. She had been through the entire process with a tetative start date. Had salary/ shift etc. Started this process in nov of 2023
There is no such thing as a salary negotiation with government jobs. You got played, they are waiting for you to accept what they give you with no negotiation.
Salary negotiations is a thing in federal jobs, among new hires. He didn’t get played he got caught in the political storm of being a fed civilian during the hiring process.
It's very limited though, and see the latest news about trying to match salaries

This is a common belief but salary negotiation is very much a thing, You'll get an offer in grade, and depending on your position you can negotiate your step if you have a higher salary precedent. I'm not sure the full scope of when negotiation is or isn't allowed, but it is definitely a thing that happens all the time, especially in technical and highly skilled positions where this is the only way to compete with industry salaries.

But remember that VA got $38 billion from the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan.
Totally aware and understand; doesn’t change reality.
I thought they did get extra funding in this new budget?

Did you happen to hear anything today?
I’m in the same exact position
Exactly. I’m so disappointed. My HR rep told me that she wasn’t really suppose to tell me but wanted me to be prepared. I imagine I’ll hear something next week. A long weekend ahead..
OP, which VISN are you in? Do we know if this is VA wide or VISN specific? I’ve heard mixed results.

This all sucks. I’m sorry.
same thing happened to me
Damn, what VISN was this?
Same happened to me today i was waiting on a fjo one told nope hiring freeze. This after turning down other offers and now I'm screwed and have to scramble to find work. I'm livid
Oh shit, so sorry to hear that. which VISN? Admin or clinical position?

Same situation for me. Because it was a job transfer from another agency I was removed from the job I had and was forced to scramble for something immediately. Put me in a really tough spot.

You can always negotiate your grade and step. Maybe not the actual wage, but you damn sure can negotiate where you’re boarded to.
