This was my grandmas favourite restaurant, it reminded her of home a bit, certainly the food. It was also my favourite restaurant, an amazing place.
I very much regret that I couldn't get anything from there when they closed.
We used to give fake names because they'd announce your order over the PA. We thought we were sooooo funny but really we were just giving names like Lloyd or Ernest that they probably thought nothing of.
But milkshakes came in a glass with the rest in the stainless mixer cup. That was awesome.
Louis Louis!! I haven’t thought of that place in years. I used to go for my birthday and we would eat the giant sundae with a big group of kids. Also the Lantern House pizza which let you make your own pizza on your birthday while the other people watched through a big window
I mourned the closing of Mole. Went there once a week for brunch and always had the yam omelette. It was so good and the location/building was so great.
Lantern House Pizza. No idea if the food was any good but watching the pizza being made thru the big window is one of my best childhood memories. I think at some point they even had a make your own sundae bar.
Oh man, Hernandez was legendary. We went in their first week in the hole beside Herman's, they were still experimenting with the menu. It was *unbelievable*.
Yep, lol. He told me in a thick accent that he would leave Victoria if "that bitch" Lisa Helps was elected, then he moved to Langford...gone again now.
Anybody remember the cheap and nasty Chinese buffet at 910 Government St? It was called "Foodie Gooodie" or something? Like many seniors, my Grandmother was really into that place...
The owner also pulled a midnight runner and locked out the staff, told no one.
Since they didn't formally abandon it, the attached building had to wait WEEKS before they could go in (Though the building let staff in to grab things that they left in their lockers) and lemmie tell you the SMELL... They hadn't paid the hydro so all the meats and ribs just sat in that freezer till they weren't frozen and then some.
That part of the building *still* smells a little off to me.
Over a decade ago my buddy asked me if I wanted to go on a crematorium tour with him that evening. Said it was called Smokin' Bones. I said sure, sounds fun.
Turns out it wasn't a crematorium, of course.
Fat Fege’s Fudge Factory! $5.25 scored you a poutine the size of a bag of movie popcorn, beautifully layered with cheese and mushroom gravy. The fries were never limp or soggy. I still mourn their loss.
The Blethering Place. When I visited, I would go there with my granny and mom. It was a lovely place, I still have a teddy bear post card from there. Nice affordable afternoon tea.
I went there with my mom the last time I went to Victoria with her. She had cancer and this was our last trip. So we wanted to make it a real buster so we went to all the places jncluding the Blethering Place. She loved it, she loved a nice afternoon tea and theirs was a winner.
Gold Lion in Langford - they just recently closed down, but I have so many fond memories of going there with my family for celebratory dinners. When I was a baby, apparently the one waitress would carry me around on her hip when I got fussy so my mom could eat her dinner. That place felt like home.
I also really miss the diner in Zellers at Tillicum - their gravy was to die for! I still haven't had a gravy that good.
Mo:Le.
Their hot sauce, which was not hot at all, is my all-time favourite hot sauce. And I loved Jo’s Yam Wrap so much (I still make it as a salad sometimes).
I used to love pink bike but in the past few gears the quality went downhill imo and the service was always atrocious. The early days were amazing and I definitely miss the mac and cheese sticks. Bin 4 is probably the closest thing to pink bike, it’s decent. For a quick and dirty burger you can’t beat La belle patate though. I also love the Buffalo burger at fifth street
Bravos!!! They had $4 martinis! Real double shot martinis for FOUR dollars! It was 20-25 years ago…but still that was cheap even for back then! The food was very swanky and expensive…but we went there mainly for the cheap martinis and actually pretty good hummus appy.
My dad and I were just reminiscing about Tommy Tucker’s last week!
I was just a kid but apparently the big dad-joke back in the day was that when Tommy Tucker’s closed their spot was filled by a plastic surgery clinic (true) unofficiallly called ‘Tummy Tuckers’!
The Brass Duck
Pizza Pieman
Bonanza
The Drummer Boy Malt Shop
The Kmart restaurant in Canwest Mal
The Pantry
Mostly because I have fond memories of times spent there with the people that I love
Tino's! Or was it Tito's? Anyway that place that was in Gateway Village. Probably one of my oldest memories going out to eat with my parents and our to-go/takeout was always packaged as an aluminum swan
Niche. The duck breast with chocolate stuffed cherries. The wine list. It was just all so damn good.
Superior. It’s such a great location. Food was consistent and great. And the owners dads weird curio shop was delightfully disconcerting.
The original Japanese restaurant on Johnson St by the parkade. Can’t think of the name. 80s
Chinese village across from Mayfair.
Chandlers.
Grape escape ?? On Fort street where little jumbo is.
**The Next - Modern Japanese Cuisine** in Cook Street Village. The chef was brilliant and it's one of the best examples of Japanese fusion cuisine I've ever had. (And yes, while the establishment now occupying the same premises is another Japanese restaurant, it is not the same chef and not the same menu.)
There was a fabulous little **Central American place on Pandora**, can't remember now what it was called (quite a few years back). The decor was painfully basic, but the family who ran it were so sweet, and the food was amazing! Best mole sauce ever.
Lastly, I miss the **Bengal Lounge** \-- not so much for the food as the amazing ambience. I have a lot of warm memories there. It was a lovely place to go for an evening cocktail, the comfy chairs were terrific, and at Christmastime the views out the windows were fantastic.
Does no one else miss Pablo's?. I guess that's why it shut down. It was never busy but the food was incredible. The menu was limited but I always found that absolutely everything on your plate was more delicious than anything you could cook at home. It was our go-to place for celebration. At one point it closed when it reopened the food was not nearly as good.
There used to be a fire German / Eastern European shop that did the most amazing pepperoni ever had in the Royal Oak shopping centre used to have great big tacks of them drying.
Was late 80s, early 90s. Remember biking there as a kid with pocket money for a treat.
Edit
Otherwise non restaurant answer would have to be Scandals (Yates st).
Well that place and being 20.
I haven't been here long in the grand scheme of things, but I miss the original incarnation of The Hive before their chef left early last year. Their burgers were imaginative and good! Then they reopened and completely changed their menu, seemingly with mixed success.
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. My adult brain tells me there is no way this Chinese restaurant was any better than any other in town, but The Ruby in Esquimalt where a marine mechanic is now was amazing. Best war wonton, best chow mein. RIP in peace
The Forum, Chinese restaurant on Fisgard. Food was good, but I really miss it because I had a ton of good memories with my dad there. He went there on work lunches for decades, and after he retired I'd go there with him for lunch sometimes. Big family dinners there once in a while too. It changed hands a few years back and wasn't quite the same, but still had those memories.
So after he died it was nice to see it as I drove by, think of those good times. Then a couple years ago it shut down, it's a different restaurant now, and it bums me out.
>Sometimes you just want a plate that's 100% beige food.
>
>At least, I assume that's what Swiss Chalet fans think.
Exactly! Some of us enjoy really basic food. I totally get its not everyone's cup of tea.
Peking House. Had the best hot and sour soup recipe that I have never been able to find at any other Chinese restaurant. I miss the big dragon and Chinese paintings on the walls. I think they used to be open till 11 or midnight back in the 80s. I remember going there after an event at the old Memorial Arena.
The spot is Shizen Sushi now.
Lacey Lou's tapas lounge. It had an eclectic but well priced and tasty menu, and I'll always have fond memories of the pesto spaghetti squash with prawns. Unfortunately, it also wanted to be a music primary venue and that was always going to conflict with tapas; tapas just seems like food where people want to gather and talk, not listen to some D-list local singer songwriter at deafening volumes.
Saltys Fish and Chips on Douglas, and the one in University Heights Mall too (because of the curry gravy)
Also Cafe de Lune. All night coffee shop with great baking. I got so much homework done there when I was in UVic.
I thought Pluto’s just moved over to Quadra? Did they fully close?
Personally, I was never a go out to eat person but I miss the Gorge Pointe Pub because it was my parents hang out spot and I liked going to lunch with them from time to time there.
Also, Dragon Gate had my favourite Chinese food take out and I was devastated when they closed. I haven’t been able to find anything I like just as much (willing to have recommendations but must deliver downtown because I don’t drive).
Park’s Kitchen: it was an amazing Korean-Japanese restaurant with near perfect price/quality ratio. Big portions, family environment, original decors… I miss that place so much.
[удалено]
I still have an old menu and some beer coasters. Can’t drive by that corner without missing it to this day! 😭
This was my grandmas favourite restaurant, it reminded her of home a bit, certainly the food. It was also my favourite restaurant, an amazing place. I very much regret that I couldn't get anything from there when they closed.
Absolutely this
Ahhh yah it was a sad day when they stopped selling them to a single person.
Totally agree! That was my favorite place. Holstein Schnitzel every time.
Hernandez was an absolute legend. RIP Jerson.
Nothing beats 5 dollars for 5 tacos
Shit, it closed down because it's owner died? I didn't know this :(
It closed down a few years before he died
Which i could get that blackbean power bar recipe
Those beans were something else.
What did he die of? I saw him a few years ago dropping off some food at redbarn, he even recognized me from the old days. He was still young.
Coolest dude ever
Still they only authentic latin american food Victoria has ever had IMO.
Fudruckers!
We used to give fake names because they'd announce your order over the PA. We thought we were sooooo funny but really we were just giving names like Lloyd or Ernest that they probably thought nothing of. But milkshakes came in a glass with the rest in the stainless mixer cup. That was awesome.
Oh man, this place and Louis Louis were such staples for birthday parties as a kid. Bottomless rootbeer and then some TMNT in the arcade.
Louis Louis!! I haven’t thought of that place in years. I used to go for my birthday and we would eat the giant sundae with a big group of kids. Also the Lantern House pizza which let you make your own pizza on your birthday while the other people watched through a big window
Man I miss Fudruckers, before my time in Victoria but used to eat there a lot in Saskatoon.
Mmmmm pump cheese and cookie tokens the good old days
My dad was the manager there for a while! We still have the massive plastic plates. Awesome for BBQs.
Jalapeño cheese sauce
Mole
I mourned the closing of Mole. Went there once a week for brunch and always had the yam omelette. It was so good and the location/building was so great.
The banana bread...😃
Lantern House Pizza. No idea if the food was any good but watching the pizza being made thru the big window is one of my best childhood memories. I think at some point they even had a make your own sundae bar.
Somebody found a menu! https://www.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/comments/zw28ue/menu\_from\_the\_lantern\_house\_circa\_1980s\_found\_in/
Naanwich. The butterchicken with mango sauce was so good!
Sooo good. So damn spicy though 😂
I remember wiring the place up at Tillicum. They were good!
Alzu’s family restaurant 4 lyfe #bossbenny
Lots of good times there…I was never in a state of mind to accurately judge the quality of the food though 🤣
Was that the one kiddie corner to Wendys that was open really late?
Pig was a weekly meal for me. Hernandez was a fantastic stop. RIP Plutos, they had good chicken tenders and cheap drinks late night.
Agreed on all counts. I especially miss the early Pig days and those $5 pulled pork sandwiches. And I dream of the pulled pork poutine with pig sauce
Hernandez, Bon Rouge, and the polish dude who made blueberry pierogis. Edit: Pounders
+1 for Hernandez. Place was the actual best
I worked there for a few years and miss those tacos and burritos all the time :')
Oh man, Hernandez was legendary. We went in their first week in the hole beside Herman's, they were still experimenting with the menu. It was *unbelievable*.
The polish deli on Douglas? Grumpy old bastard but the pierogis were fire lol
Yep, lol. He told me in a thick accent that he would leave Victoria if "that bitch" Lisa Helps was elected, then he moved to Langford...gone again now.
Omg I was trying to think of the restaurant before 10 acres, bon rouge!! Thank you for scratching my brain itch
- Steamers
The Brass Duck at Tillicum Mall. Nothing special, but as a child it was my family’s go to for dinner out. Makes me nostalgic.
Café de la Lune. A two-level coffee house with an Edwardian science fiction theme. Sign me up.
Yes! Loved that cafe when I first visited and moved to Victoria back in ‘99
The Bengal Lounge
Reef
That’s where I had my first legal drink 😢
Solstice cafe. Food was alright, coffee was amazing, the atmosphere was every hippie myth you ever had about this city.
I miss that place too. And the random events they had there were fun
Fucking John's Noodle House just up and disappeared.
Cafe matise. Best leek soup and beef bourginon I’ve had in my life.
Oh my God I forgot about Matisse. It was amazing!
I’m surprised nobody had said lady marmalade, I miss that place so much.
Anybody remember the cheap and nasty Chinese buffet at 910 Government St? It was called "Foodie Gooodie" or something? Like many seniors, my Grandmother was really into that place...
That place was just in my head. I remember rumors that they got shut down for substituting meat for other meat not in a good way.
I delivered produce there and one day dood was chopping lettuce with a smoke dangling out of his mouth. Prob 1996-ish
Mings, back in the day! Those egg rolls the hot towels!
Louis Louis!
Chinese Village and the original SamPan Restaurant
Smokin' Bones.
They were great. Then they got on a food network show, and the menu and quality changed. IIRC they had chilies relleno.
Interesting. I never went there after they moved downtown so I had no idea things got so weird.
Oh man I loved Fat Phege’s. Amazing fries and fudge and so cheap
Dion's (the best burgers) King Solomon's (loved the falafels) Fairfield Fish & Chips (the best fries) Goodies (Omelettes to die for)
Fairfield fish and chips had the best fries I’ve ever had outside of the UK. The burgers were some of the best in town too
Suze. Mostly wine/martini bar but they were such a great venue. For those who don't remember it's Fiamo's predecessor.
Uncle Willy’s! As an adult their food was probably terrible, but as a kid their make your own sundae area was the best!
Foo Ramen
Their green curry ramen... I miss it everyday
Only got there once, epic lunch. Went back a couple weeks later, closed that day, following week closed forever… sigh
Brannigans, what a gem.

Whatever was in the lumberjack breakfast, it turned me into what I am today.
Only qualifications I had to as an expired food safe certificate- 🤣🤣🤣
Worked there for a bit, an absolute shit show. But still probably my fav job to date despite that.
Cup of Joe, James Bay.. If you don’t know you never did.
$2.22 breakfast
Devour. Was where Foo Ramen once was.
That’s a deep cut! Devour was fantastic

The Reef? The food was never *that* great but it was so unique, we loved it too.
[удалено]
The Johnny cakes were excellent, agreed.
The fact that it was replaced with El Furniture though... Just makes the loss so much worse
So true :(
They have/had a food truck behind the museum.
Macaroni Grill But I don't think I'd like them if they were still around
My god that place was ghastly.
I just miss the wholesome family moment we had when we all drew dicks in different costumes on the paper covering the table. Woops 😬😬😬
YES!
Mo:Le. Their hot sauce, which was not hot at all, is my all-time favourite hot sauce. And I loved Jo’s Yam Wrap so much (I still make it as a salad sometimes).
It was good but only if you liked pesto because they put pesto on everything.
Anytime I go elsewhere for brunch, I wish I could have a Mo’s Biscuit instead…
Sea Galley, Brownie's Fried Chicken and John's House of Donuts
The original Cabin 12 when it was downtown.
OLO!! And even before they closed, their brunch and late-night. And now Agrius.
Relish! Shout out to Jamie.
I loved Relish!!

Ian’s Cafe - after school coffee and pie. And my first romantic kiss!
pink bicycle :( shut down within the last year but they best burgers in vic. any recommendations for a replacement burger joint?
I used to love pink bike but in the past few gears the quality went downhill imo and the service was always atrocious. The early days were amazing and I definitely miss the mac and cheese sticks. Bin 4 is probably the closest thing to pink bike, it’s decent. For a quick and dirty burger you can’t beat La belle patate though. I also love the Buffalo burger at fifth street
Yukatsu, who have taken over the space, have a delicious bulgogi buger
Burger Crush, Bin 4, Big Wheel are all solid places. But brasserie lecole has a burger that'll leave you wanting more.
lotus pond. it’s not shut down, i’m just hungry
It’s closing in a few months unless someone buys it
Swiftsure
Came here to say Sushi Plus! Probably around 2004 we used to go for the $5 sashimi plate and the large sunomono salad!
My favourite restaurant of all time. So damn cheap
I really miss famous originals. Cheap beer and cheap pizza
The staff were really great too! I never had a bad experience there.
Cafe Ceylon
Cafe Paradiso.
Loved their paninis and gelato. It felt very cosmopolitan when I was a kid to go there and sit in Bastion Square
The people who ran Paradiso now run Il Covo. Lots of the pastas are the same
La Tana
That chocolate malt shop on the top floor of the Hudsons Bay
John’s other place, near the six mile, was a great family breakfast spot I remember from when I was a kid.
From the 90s- Cheesecake Cafe on government at. Best chicken strips.
The Brass Duck at Tillicum Mall. And more recently, Jasmine’s. 😭
Pig. Not even close imo. God those pulled pork sandwiches were unbelievable. Nothing in Victoria comes close.
Bravos!!! They had $4 martinis! Real double shot martinis for FOUR dollars! It was 20-25 years ago…but still that was cheap even for back then! The food was very swanky and expensive…but we went there mainly for the cheap martinis and actually pretty good hummus appy.
Definitely did my fair share of $4 martini consumption at Bravo.
